Zardari said it had been a difficult time for all of us before reporters were ushered out of the room.Pakistan has been rocked by days of violent protests in its major cities as demonstrations have swept Muslim countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia over an anti-Islam film. One or two insane persons should not be allowed to endanger world peace in the garb of freedom of expression, Zardari said in his meeting with Clinton, according to a statement from the Pakistan embassy.Fridays protests left 21 dead, and more than 200 injured as Pakistani police fought back to disperse crowds around US diplomatic missions.Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar insisted on Friday that ties between the United States and Pakistan are improving after hitting a low following the killing of Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani compound in May 2011, and a US airstrike in November which killed 24 Pakistani troops. We should build on the positive momentum, Zardari told Clinton. The statement said the two leaders had also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, and how to cooperate in achieving stability there.Peace and stability in Pakistan were tied to peace and stability in Afghanistan, he insisted. No country has paid a higher price for the conflict in Afghanistan than Pakistan, he said.He also called for Pakistani products, particularly textiles, to be granted better access to US markets.Pakistan would rather do trade than depend on aid, the Pakistani leader insisted.

Provocative anti-jihad ads go up in NYC subways

Posted:

Provocative advertisements equating Muslim radicals with savages appeared in New York City subways on Monday, drawing immediate criticism from some riders. Its a terrible idea, said Colby Richardson at a subway station in midtown Manhattan. Its going to spark controversy obviously when you deem one side savages and the other side civilized. Said another rider, Cameron McCabe: I think its unfortunate that someone would want to put that up. But, she added, I think its their right to do so.The ads reading, In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad. went up in 10 stations across Manhattan after a court victory by a conservative commentator who once headed a campaign against an Islamic center near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York initially refused to run blogger Pamela Gellers ad, saying it was demeaning. But a federal judge ruled last month that it is protected speech under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.Geller, executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative and publisher of a blog called Atlas Shrugs, has said shes not concerned that her ad could spark protests like the ones against the depiction of Muslims in the video Innocence of Muslims. Violence linked to the movie has left dozens in seven countries dead, including the American ambassador to Libya. The ad was plastered on San Francisco city buses in recent weeks, prompting some people to deface the ads and remove some of the words, including Jihad, or holy war. There were no immediate reports of similar mischief in New York on Monday.A New York Police Department spokesman said Monday that the department has no plans to beef up security in response to the campaign.Geller said the subway ads cost about $6,000. The MTA said they will be up for a month.

Iran test missiles, unveils drone amid Israel tensions

Posted:

Iran has tested anti-air and anti-ship missiles and unveiled a new drone, its powerful Revolutionary Guards said on Monday, in a show of military readiness for a war with Israel their chief says is inevitable.Medium-range surface-to-air missiles designed to knock attacking aircraft out of the sky at a range of 50 kilometres (30 miles) were successfully fired on Monday, the Guards said in a statement on their official Sepahnews website. The new, Taer-2 missiles were part of an anti-air defence system known as Raad (Thunder), the statement said. The Fars news agency called the domestically made missiles more advanced than the Russian-made Buk family of missiles they were based on.Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, the commander of the Guards navy, also said that on Sunday a naval drill was held in which four missiles hit a warship-sized target, sinking it in 50 seconds, according to Fars.We have missile systems that cover all the Persian Gulf coasts and the American bases (in the region), he was quoted as saying. He added that the Revolutionary Guards would in the next six months hold big naval manoeuvres in the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic, narrow channel at the Gulfs entrance through which a third of the worlds seaborne traded oil passes.Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the commander of the Guards aerospace division charged with missile defence, also announced a new drone, dubbed Shahed 129, with a range of 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles). It is able to carry bombs and missiles... it has the ability to fly non-stop for 24 hours, it does surveillance, Fars quoted him as saying. State television showed images of the unmanned aircraft. On Saturday, the head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said war between Iran and Israel will eventually happen, but it is not certain where and when.It was the first time a senior Iranian official had acknowledged the probability of war breaking out between the two arch-foes.Israel in recent weeks has ratcheted up its threats to possibly launch air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, with or without help from its US ally.Irans Revolutionary Guards commanders have said they would view any Israeli attack as being carried out with US authorisation, and warned they would hit US military bases in Afghanistan, Qatar and Bahrain in retaliation.Hajizadeh told Irans Al-Alam television network on Sunday that an Israel-Iran war would be unpredictable -- and it will turn into World War III as other countries were sucked into it.

Six people, including four children, killed in Iraq

A car bomb targeting security forces killed four Iraqi primary school pupils on Monday, while two police were shot dead and five bodies found in north Iraq, security and medical officials said. The car bomb was parked near a school in the town of Heet, 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of Baghdad, and exploded around 8:00 am (0500 GMT) as a security forces anti-terrorism unit passed by, while children were arriving for classes.Colonel Ayada al-Nimrawi, deputy police chief in Heet, said the blast killed four children and wounded another two. Dr Subhi Abed al-Alwani confirmed the toll. They said members of the security patrol were unscathed.United Nations envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler condemned the attack, saying in a statement that it is a shocking act of violence against the innocent. For schools to be attacked is a despicable crime and we are particularly distressed to learn that some of the victims were young children, Kobler said.Whether the school was intended as the target or not, no child should pay the price for violence carried out at the hands of criminals. Also on Monday, gunmen shot dead two policemen and wounded another in an attack on a checkpoint in restive, ethnically mixed Kirkuk city in Iraqs north, a senior security official and Dr Meteen Omar Qader said. And five bodies were found in the desert about 60 kilometres (37.5 miles) west of the Mosul, also in north Iraq, police First Lieutenant Salam al-Juburi and Dr Mahmud Hadad said.Violence in Iraq has decreased from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but deadly attacks still occur almost every day. With the latest violence, at least 181 people have been killed and 677 wounded in attacks in Iraq so far this month, according to an AFP tally based on security and medical sources.

Mali formally asks UN to allow military intervention

Mali has sent a letter to the United Nations formally requesting authorization for a West African-led military force to help it seize back territory from Islamist rebels, France said Monday.Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius of France, which has offered to provide logistical support for regional intervention, revealed the existence of the letter on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Malian government wants this force, he said, adding that the letter was signed by Malis President Dioncounda Traore and Prime Minister Cheikh Modibo Diarra and had been sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on September 18.He said the request outlined the precise terms under which Mali envisaged welcoming troops from the West African regional bloc ECOWAS to fight alongside government forces battling to recover land lost to rebel forces.UN member states are to hold talks on the crisis in the Sahel region, which includes Mali, on Wednesday on the sidelines of the General Assembly.Fabius expressed the hope that this would lead rapidly to a vote at the UN Security Council on whether to authorize an intervention.

New SARS-like virus detected in Middle East

Posted:

Global health officials are closely monitoring a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left a Qatari citizen in critical condition in London. The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic. In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.WHO said virus samples from the patient are almost identical to those of a 60-year-old Saudi national who died earlier this year. The agency isnt currently recommending travel restrictions and said the source of infection remains unknown. Still, the situation has raised concerns ahead of next months annual Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions of people to Saudi Arabia from around the world.Health officials dont know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people. SARS, which first jumped to humans from civet cats in China, hit more than 30 countries worldwide after spreading from Hong Kong. Its still (in the) very early days, said Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman. At the moment, we have two sporadic cases and there are still a lot of holes to be filled in.He added it was unclear how the virus spreads. Coronaviruses are typically spread in the air but Hartl said scientists were considering the possibility that the patients were infected directly by animals. He said there was no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission. All possible avenues of infection are being explored right now, he said.No other countries have so far reported any similar cases to WHO, he said, and so far there is no connection between the cases except for a history of travel in Saudi Arabia.Hartl said the first patient may have had an underlying condition but it probably didnt make him more susceptible to catching the virus.Other experts said it was unclear how dangerous the virus is.We dont know if this is going to turn into another SARS or if it will disappear into nothing, said Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota. He said it was crucial to determine the ratio of severe to mild cases.Osterholm said it was worrying that at least one person with the disease had died. You dont die from the common cold, he said. This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS, which killed about 10 percent of the people it infected.Britains Health Protection Agency and WHO said in statements that the 49-year-old Qatari national became ill on Sept. 3, having previously traveled to Saudi Arabia. He was transferred from Qatar to Britain on Sept. 11 and is being treated in an intensive care unit at a London hospital for problems including kidney failure. Respiratory viruses arent usually known to cause serious kidney problems. In Qatar, Mohammed bin Hamid Al Thani of the Public Health Department said the patient was in Saudi Arabia for Ramadan during the summer and fell ill after returning to Qatar. Doctors could not immediately identify the virus and decided he should be treated in London.A public health official, Abdullakef al-Khal, said there is no indication that the patients family or others were infected. There is no special alert for now, he said. We are being vigilant.David Heymann, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said the new virus didnt appear that similar to SARS.It isnt as lethal as SARS and we dont know too much about its transmissibility yet, he said. If people are getting infected, they arent getting serious disease.Heymann said none of the health workers involved in treating the Qatari patient had fallen ill.Saudi officials said they were concerned that the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage next month could provide more opportunities for the virus to spread. They advised pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places. The Hajj has previously sparked outbreaks of diseases including the flu, meningitis and polio.

Real Madrid back on track with Rayo win

Posted:

Real Madrid kept Barcelona in their sights as an early goal from Karim Benzema put them on their way to a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano - but they remain eight points behind the Catalan side, who are yet to drop a point this season.Benzema struck after 13 minutes and Cristiano Ronaldo added a second mid-way through the second half as Jose Mourinhos side came out on top in the match suspended on Sunday due to floodlight failure caused by sabotage. In injury time Jose Casado was dismissed for the home side after receiving his second yellow card. The green light was finally given to play the game on Monday evening at Rayos Estadio de Vallecas ground in what was a tough battle for Madrid against city rivals Rayo with the pressure on after Barcelona beat Granada 2-0 on Saturday, their fifth win in succession, while Madrid had only one.We played as a team but we could still have been better. We were committed, which is important and it allowed us to win without problems, said Mourinho afterwards. It has been a strange situation with the postponement and it has been complicated to prepare for this but it was the same for both teams. We overcame it and although it wasnt a great win, we did enough. We had a lot of chances to score while they had few.Rayo coach Paco Jemez felt that his side did well but the quality of Madrid shone through in the end.Against top sides it isnt enough just to compete. I cant criticise the team though, quite the opposite, I congratulate them for their effort, he said.We had the game more or less under control and it was when we were at our best that we conceded the second.Sergio Ramos returned to the side after being dropped for Madrids Champions League victory over Manchester City last week, while Michael Essien was also given the nod over Sami Khedira to partner Xabi Alonso in front of the defence in a more offensive formation than against the Premiership side as Luka Modric returned.Jemez has shown an admirable commitment to attacking football and they faced the champions with two wingers in Jose Carlos and Lass Bangoura, who had full licence to go forward.Apart from a dangerous header from Pepe, saved by keeper Ruben Martinez, Rayo took the game to Madrid, who were reduced to committing a series of fouls and Essien was yellow carded for a handball. However, Madrid conjured up an excellent goal on the counter-attack which spanned the length of the pitch and was finished off by Benzema, who knocked the ball in from close range from a Angel Di Maria cross on the left.Madrid were not comfortable at the back and Alvaro Arbeloa gifted the ball to Lass at the start of the second half but he failed to control with just Casillas to beat.In an open game Essien and Ronaldo shot narrowly wide as did Jose Carlos for Rayo before Ronaldos penalty decided the game after 70 minutes. It was the Portugueses cross that was handled by centre-half Jordi Amat and Ronaldo took the spot-kick, sending the keeper the wrong way.Minutes later Ronaldo could have extended Madrids advantage but he hit the post from a Gonzalo Higuain pass with the goal gaping. In the second minute of injury time frustration got the better of Casado. who left his foot in as he challenged Mesut Ozil and was given his second yellow card.

Oil drops below $92 on gloomy economic outlook

Worries about weaker economic growth dragged down oil prices Monday.Oil has now fallen five of the last six trading days. It fell more than 6 percent last week.Benchmark crude fell 96 cents, or 1 percent, to finish at $91.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices for other petroleum products dropped, too.In London, Brent crude dropped $1.61 at $109.81 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.Germany delivered the latest dose of gloomy economic news, with its Ifo index of business confidence falling for the fifth month in a row.Germany is an economic powerhouse, but 43 percent of its exports go to its euro partners. And growth is stalling across the other 16 countries in the eurozone.Slower economies mean less demand for oil, pushing prices down.Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst for Price Futures Group, said hes surprised prices havent fallen further. He said one reason could be that commodity funds have not been bailing out of oil.Still, oil prices have been under pressure from worries about Europe. The dollar has been stronger, which makes oil cheaper for holders of other currencies.Youre seeing demand destruction around the globe, he said. Youve got Saudi Arabia saying theyre going to pump oil until the cows come home. All of that drives down oil prices, he said.

Dollar gains on more gloom in Europe

The dollar picked up ground on the euro Monday as eurozone leaders appeared again divided on going ahead with a new Greek debt deal and support for Spain, and German business confidence fell.Economists warned that Germany is heading for recession after the Ifo institutes closely watched survey of the business climate in Germany dropped in September for the fifth month running. The companies surveyed are again less satisfied with their current business situation. They also expressed greater pessimism about the future, said Ifo president Hans-Werner Sinn. That helped push the euro to $1.2928, down from $1.2985 late Friday. Both currencies dropped against the Japanese yen: The dollar fell to 77.83 yen from 78.12 yen, while the euro slipped to 100.63 yen from 101.42 yen.The euro came under pressure on Monday amid the heightening threat for another debt-restructuring in Greece, said David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX.The single currency looks poised to face additional headwinds over the near term as the fundamental outlook for Europe turns increasingly bleak.European Union President Herman Van Rompuy called on Monday for a fresh sense of urgency in tackling the eurozone debt crisis ahead of a summit of EU leaders next month.Van Rompuy warned of a tendency of losing the sense of urgency by European officials. This must not happen, he said. The upcoming October 18-19 summit must deal with the hard questions on the euro. The dollar picked up strength against the Swiss franc, rising to 0.9357 francs from 0.9324 francs. The British pound eased to $1.6217 from $1.6229.

We are prepared to defend if Israel attacks: Iran

Posted:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday that Israel has no roots in the history of the Middle East and would be eliminated.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted Israel could strike Irans nuclear sites and has criticized U.S. President Barack Obamas position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.Iran denies that it is seeking nuclear arms and says its atomic work is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.Fundamentally we do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists. We have all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves, Ahmadinejad told reporters in New York, where he is due to attend the U.N. General Assembly. While we are fully ready to defend ourselves, we do no take such threats seriously, he said, speaking through an interpreter.Ahmadinejad alluded to his previous rejection of Israels right to exist. Iran has been around for the last seven, 10 thousand years. They (the Israelis) have been occupying those territories for the last 60 to 70 years, with the support and force of the Westerners. They have no roots there in history, he said. The modern state of Israel was founded in 1948.We do believe that they have found themselves at a dead end and they are seeking new adventures in order to escape this dead end. Iran will not be damaged with foreign bombs, Ahmadinejad said, referring to Israel. We dont even count them as any part of any equation for Iran. During a historical phase, they represent minimal disturbances that come into the picture and are then eliminated, Ahmadinejad added. In 2005, Ahmadinejad called Israel a tumor and echoed the words of the former Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, by saying that Israel should be wiped off the map.Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was quoted on Sunday as saying that Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state was preparing to attack it.Ahmadinejad said the nuclear issue was one ultimately between the United States and Iran, and must be resolved with negotiations. The nuclear issue is not a problem. But the approach of the United States on Iran is important. We are ready for dialogue, for a fundamental resolution of the problems, but under conditions that are based on fairness and mutual respect, he said.We are not expecting a 33-year-old problem between the United States and Iran to be resolved in a speedy fashion. But there is no other way besides dialogue.
