Oil prices rise, then gives up gains

Posted:

The initial run-up in prices was driven by word that the European Central Bank will buy lots of government bonds, which should help lower borrowing costs for European countries struggling with debt expenses. Prices were also boosted by reports showing more private-sector hiring and fewer unemployment claims in the U.S.Positive economic news tends to boost oil prices, because traders anticipate that stronger economies will need more oil.Oil prices were also supported by a report from the Energy Information Administration that showed U.S. crude supplies dropped by more than analysts expected last week. Hurricane Isaac interrupted deliveries of oil imports and refinery activity along the Gulf Coast.Benchmark U.S. crude reached as high as $97.71 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. However, in late trading, enthusiasm cooled. Oil ended the day at $95.53, up just 17 cents. The price of Brent crude, priced in London, fell 51 cents to end at $112.98 a barrel. Why the big price decline from intraday highs? The answer wasnt obvious, even to some analysts.I wonder if its a case of buy on the rumor and sell on the news, said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.

Obama to ask for second term in big convention address

Posted:

President Barack Obama said Thursday he will urge supporters to defy the cynics one more time when he pitches for four more White House years in his crucial convention address.Obama, 51, faces a high bar to better the speeches of his wife Michelle and Bill Clinton as he formally accepts the Democratic nomination for president exactly two months before his election clash with Republican Mitt Romney. He was due to step to the podium at the Democratic National Convention in a riot of noise and color at 0200 GMT for his best chance to convince Americans that he deserves a second and final term despite a lingering economic malaise. The prime-time address comes with Obama waging a too-close-to-call race with Romney, who argues that 8.3 percent unemployment and sluggish growth prove the president is out of ideas and should be sent back to Chicago after one term.Obama is expected to tell Americans that he rescued them from a second Great Depression, blame Republicans for leaving him a legacy of debt and recession, and warn Romneys policies would risk repeating the disaster. He is also under pressure for the first time to lay out specifics of what he would hope to do in a second term, and to go into more detail than the largely aspirational vision he has so far framed.I think hopefully at the end of this convention people will say we accomplished what we needed to and have delivered our vision for the country and offered a clear contrast to (Republicans), Obama said Thursday. But this is still going to be a really close election, Obama said in an online chat for supporters disappointed when his campaign, fearing thunder, cancelled plans to hold the speech before 70,000 people outdoors.I need you to prove the cynics wrong one more time.Democrats will devote a portion of Thursdays program to lionizing Obamas record on national security, an area in which polls show he is favored over Romney.Obamas decision to order a special forces raid deep into Pakistan last year to kill Osama bin Laden will doubtless play a starring role, along with his honored 2008 campaign vow to end the Iraq war.Former Democratic nominee John Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden will lead tributes to Obama as commander-in-chief, hoping to capitalize on Romneys failure to mention the Afghan war in his own convention address last week.Obama, who riffed off two acclaimed convention speeches in 2004 and 2008, recognized that he faced a tough task to top Clintons speech on Wednesday and his wife Michelles the day before.Michelle -- what can I say? Im a little biased, but she was unbelievable. And yesterday President Clinton, who I think broke down the issues as effectively as anybody could.Anticipation was building around the sports arena hosting Obamas address. Were going to hear the best speech of his life tonight, said campaign volunteer Brenda Stone.Lavonia Perryman, vice president of the Michigan black caucus, said however that Obama might struggle to repeat the kind of exuberance he whipped up four years ago. That is almost like saying we are going to have the first Easter again. Jesus Christ only came one time. We celebrate it, but we dont have him coming back, that aint gonna happen.Delegates were also buzzing about former two-term Democratic president Clinton, who has lost none of his ability to make crisp political arguments.Clinton appealed to Democrats, crucial independents and undecided voters, delivering a point-by-point rebuttal of Republican attacks and an unequivocal embrace of Obama, laying to rest previous tensions. He has laid the foundations for a new, modern successful economy of shared prosperity, and if you will renew the presidents contract, you will feel it, Clinton said.Folks, whether the American people believe what I said or not may be the whole election, I just want you to know that I believe it. With all my heart I believe it.Obama bounded on stage after the speech and Clinton greeted him with a low bow and a brotherly hug.The Romney campaign retorted by highlighting the contrast between the prosperity of the Clinton years and the cloudy economic climate of the Obama era.

Paralympics: Seventh heaven for Australia's Freney

Posted:

Australias Jacqueline Freney on Thursday won the womens S7 400m freestyle, bagging her seventh gold of the London Paralympics, as compatriot Matthew Cowdrey took a career 12th and Natalie du Toit again shined.Seven? Im in heaven. Its just unbelievable how good this meets been for me. Its probably been one of my best meets to date. I couldnt be more proud of myself, the 20-year-old told reporters.Freneys achievement means that she has now surpassed Siobhan Patons record of six, straight gold medals at the Sydney Games 12 years ago.She was a bronze medallist in the event in Beijing and broke her own world record during the race to set a new best of 4min 59.02sec -- and said she was pleased to be among Paralympic greats.I didnt think Id ever be able to achieve what theyve achieved but its realistic now. Lets just say I have another goal in mind for Rio (de Janeiro in 2016), she added.Earlier, Cowdrey shrugged off a virtually sleepless night since he became Australias most-decorated Paralympic athlete on Wednesday to take the mens SM9 200m individual medley. But Cowdrey said he had under-estimated the effect of the achievement, as he returned to the Aquatics Centre for Fridays heat and final in front of his parents, who had flown in especially to watch. That one hurt. Im not going to lie at all about that, he told reporters.I dont think I fully understood how emotionally and physically draining it was last night and the last couple of days, and being a 10-day (competition) it definitely is a lot bigger and harder than what were used to.I only got a couple of hours sleep last night. After three or four hours sleep this afternoon, I would have been ready to come out and go for it tonight.Natalie Du Toit of South Africa also took her third Games gold as she prepared to bring the curtain down on her glittering career that has not only seen her win 13 Paralympic golds but also compete at the Commonwealth Games and Olympics. The 28-year-old won the womens SM9 200m individual medal and was roared to victory by the crowd in the 17,500-capacity Aquatics Centre but said she had mixed emotions heading into her final race on Friday, the S9 100m freestyle.Du Toit is the current world record holder at the event.(Im) sad, relieved and I think scared because I have no idea what Im going to do but also scared because those girls are swimming well. To walk away with a medal will be very special with it being the last competition, she said.Hopefully afterwards I wont cry, Im gonna give it everything, she added but ruled out changing her mind about retirement.

US raises expulsion of 'Save the Children' staff with Pakistan

Posted:

The acting deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, Patrick Ventrell, during a briefing Thursday, was asked about the decision taken by Pakistan government that all foreign staff of international NGO Save the Children should leave the country within two weeks. He said that the US administration had taken up this issue with Pakistan government.Like other donor countries, the United States strongly supports the work of Save the Children in Pakistan. We are deeply concerned and have raised this issue with the Government of Pakistan and urged it to allow Save the Children to continue its important work, he revealed.Mr Ventrell went on to appreciate the work of international development agencies in countries like Pakistan. Independent NGOs are among the essential building blocks of any healthy democracy. So in Pakistan, as in other countries, we urge governments to help create an environment in which they can operate productively, he maintained. When probed that at what level had the US taken-up this issue with Pakistan, he said that the American embassy in Islamabad was looking into it. Well, certainly our Embassy out in Islamabad has. I’ll have to check in and see if we’ve also raised it through other channels or here from Washington, but our Embassy most definitely has been in direct touch, he observed.Apparently no official reason has been given to Save the Children for this abrupt decision. However, they are accused by the government of helping the CIA track Osama bin Laden through Dr Shakeel Afridi that led to his killing on May 2nd last year in Abbottabad. Dr Afridi remains in custody in Pakistan and has already been sentened to 33 years in prison.Save the Children is one of the leading global organizations working for the rights and better living conditions of children. They have been working in Pakistan for more than 30 years now and over 2000 of their staffers currently in the country are believed to be foreigners.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in Washington, DC
