Battle rages in Aleppo as Russia urges Syria unity

Posted:

Fighting for control of a key army base in Aleppo raged on Saturday, as Russia tried to revive a divisive accord on ending the bloodshed that calls for a government of unity in Syria. As Lakhdar Brahimi prepared for his first visit to Damascus as international envoy on Syria, EU foreign ministers meeting in Cyprus upped the pressure, saying they agreed on the need to beef up sanctions against the Syrian regime. On the ground, the army claimed a victory against rebels in the northern city of Aleppo, ousting them from the Hanano army base backed by armour and helicopters in a 20-hour battle, military sources and witnesses said. There are a lot of victims on both sides, one witness told AFP.A military official said soldiers destroyed six armoured vehicles the rebels were using to transport arms seized from the barracks that serves mainly as a weapons depot and recruitment centre.Rebels on Friday claimed to have captured parts of the barracks. The rebels had thrown themselves whole-heartedly into this offensive because they desperately need weapons, an army official said.Badly outgunned members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) took part in the offensive, a rebel commander calling himself as Abu Omar said on Friday. The goal was to liberate Hanano, cut off supply lines and stop shelling that has caused many civilian casualties in Aleppo.Later, it was reported that a main water line had been destroyed, with Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the SyrianObservatory for Human Rights, saying this was critical because it provides drinking water to the whole city.We cannot say how it was ruptured, but there were air strikes and clashes between the army and rebels in the area, he added.Aleppo provincial governor Mohammed Wahid Akkad blamed a terrorist attack and said work was under way to restore supplies, the official SANA news agency reported. The Local Coordination Committees, a network of opposition activists on the ground, blamed the damage on regime air attacks. The rebels also assaulted Aleppos Midan district by breaking into the Saint Vartan religious complex between the central district and a rebel stronghold, a military source and local residents said. They tried to take Midan but were met with fierce resistance by the security forces of the air force, who are in charge of the area, the source added. The Observatory also reported shelling in Damascus, in the southern province of Daraa, and clashes around a military airport in Albu Kamal in the east. The fighting also spilled over into Iraq, when mortar rounds hit the border town of Al-Qaim, killing a four-year old girl and wounding four people, an Iraqi army captain said.At least 80 people -- 25 civilians, 19 rebels and 36 soldiers -- were killed nationwide on Saturday, the Observatory reported, following a day in which 136 people died.

Captive US soldier safe, says Haqqani commander

Posted:

A US soldier held by Afghan militants will not be harmed despite the Obama administrations decision to declare his alleged captors a terrorist group, a senior member of the Pakistan-based Haqqani network told The Associated Press on Saturday. However, the United States and NATO can expect stepped up attacks, he said. The commander, who spoke by telephone from an undisclosed location, denied that the Haqqanis held the only American prisoner of war of the Afghan conflict, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, as the US believes. He did however say that Bergdahl was a captive of another branch of the Taliban, and denied earlier reports that the 26-year-old soldier from Hailey, Idaho, was in danger.I deny the remarks . . . that this will endanger the life of the American soldier, the commander said, speaking on condition he not be identified because field commanders fear being targeted if their identities are known. We are not cowards and we consider it as coward to harm prisoners, he said. The US says that Bergdahl has been held by the Pakistan-based Haqqanis since 2009. However, the commander suggested he was with militants on the other side of the Afghan-Pakistan border. The American soldier is with the Emirate center (a reference to Taliban based inside Afghanistan) . . . The Americans also know it.He said the Taliban leadership council previously issued instructions to its commanders, including those belonging to the Haqqani network, not to harm prisoners. From his home in Idaho, the soldiers father Bob Bergdahl welcomed the assurances but was cautious.Thats great news, but were very careful about the information we digest, he told the AP. Ill have to validate that and check that. The elder Bergdahl said the commanders promise not to mistreat prisoners was the position of the Emirate even before my son was taken prisoner.Yet the Haqqani commander said the network is planning a series of retaliatory attacks against US and NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.Sirajuddin Haqqani, the organizations military commander, is seeking permission from Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar to stage a blitzkrieg of attacks against US forces in Afghanistan, he said.He (Sirajuddin Haqqani) wants to carry out 80 to 100 attacks on US forces in Afghanistan and 20 attacks on other NATO members, said the commander in retaliation for the designation. He repeated earlier statements that the Haqqani network answered to Mullah Omar and was not separate from the Taliban organization. But once Mullah Omar signs off on the actions, the commander said, we have our consultative and military council which plans attacks. The commander claimed that the Obama administration had been in touch with the Haqqani network last year as part of its efforts to broker a peace deal ahead of the withdrawal of US military troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Abbas, Hamas trade blame over Palestinian unity

Posted:

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and the Islamist Hamas group ruling Gaza on Saturday each strongly denied responsibility for the failure of national reconciliation efforts.Reconciliation means elections, and wanting to establish an independent emirate in Gaza will not work, Abbas said in a televised speech, addressing himself directly to Hamas leaders in the Gaza enclave.Reconciliation will not be achieved until the electoral commission has started recording (voters) in Gaza so elections can take place three months later, he said.Abbas also said Ismail Haniya, who heads the Hamas government in Gaza, has no right to represent Palestine abroad as prime minister, but as a leader of Hamas, referring to his intention to attend last months Non-Alignment Summit in Tehran.Haniya abandoned the plan after Abbas threatened to boycott the gathering.Hamas on Saturday dismissed Abbass comments.Abbas has completed his mandate as per the law and there is no president in the context of national (Palestinian) consensus, Hamas spokesman Taher al-Nunu told AFP.Abbas is trying to raise tension against Hamas to divert public opinion from the domestic crisis, he said, referring to social unrest in the West Bank.On July 2, the Hamas government temporarily halted voter registration just over a month after granting the electoral commission permission to work in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian government in the West Bank on July 10 said it would hold local elections in October across the Palestinian territories, sparking anger from Hamas. In April 2011, the ruling Fatah party of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas signed a reconciliation deal with its Hamas rivals who govern Gaza in a move aimed at ending years of rivalry. But the deal was never implemented, with the factions falling out over plans to set up a caretaker cabinet of independents which was to have prepared the way for presidential and legislative elections within a year.

Murray blows away Berdych to reach Open final

British third seed Andy Murray, the Olympic champion, advanced to the US Open final by defeating Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (9/7) on a blustery Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.Murray will face either defending champion Novak Djokovic, the Serbian second seed, or Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer in Sundays championship match. The 25-year-old Scotsman owns a 6-5 career record aginst Ferrer but trails Djokovic 6-8 in their all-time rivalry.Murray, trying to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry at the 1936 US championship, battled through brutal winds to reach his fifth career Grand Slam final and second at the US Open.Despite wicked breezes, Murray connected on 74 percent of his first serves and won 73 percent of those points while making only 20 unforced errors to 64 for Berdych. It was brutal, Murray said. Hard to describe. You had to focus for every single point. You had to get in position for every shot. You werent going for aces because it was hard enough to get the second serves in.Some of the hardest conditions I have ever played in, and I come from Scotland so thats saying something.Murray and his coach, eight-time Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl, are the only Open-era players to drop their first four Grand Slam finals, Murray losing at the 2008 US Open, 2010 and 2011 Australian Opens and last June at Wimbledon.

Paralympics: Pistorius retains 400m title with style

Posted:

Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius on Saturday brought the Paralympic track and field programme to a close in style, winning his favoured event by a huge margin.Victory for the 25-year-old South African never looked in any doubt from the gun, as he struck out on his own to lead coming into the last half-lap and was roared across the line by the packed 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in 46.68sec.US athletes Blake Leeper took silver in 50.14sec with David Prince in bronze on 50.61.Pistorius -- the only man in the field to run under 50sec for the one-lap sprint and the first double-amputee to compete at the Olympics last month -- won the 100m, 200m and 400m treble in Beijing four years ago.But he lost both of the shorter sprint titles to Britains Jonnie Peacock and Alan Oliveira of Brazil. It was very very special to me, Pistorius told Britains Channel 4 television after the race. It was the last event of my season, the last event of the London 2012 Games. Just so special. It was my 11th time I was able to come out on the track and I just wanted to end and give the crowd something they would appreciate and take home with them.I was very nervous before todays race. I was quite tired but the crowd just really kept me going.Pistorius also won gold in the mens T42-46 4x100m relay for single and double below-the-knee amputees and upper limb amputees.

Hamilton takes pole position for Italian GP

Posted:

Lewis Hamilton took pole position for Sundays Italian Grand Prix after setting the fastest time in qualifying, while teammate Jenson Button made it a McLaren one-two.Amid speculation about his future and a possible switch to Mercedes, Hamilton took his fourth pole of the season in a time of 1 minute, 24.010 seconds, just over a tenth of a second faster than Button.Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was third, but championship leader Fernando Alonso had another disappointing day. The Spaniard, who was just a thousandth of a second behind Hamilton in the final practice, will start way back in 10th position.Hamilton has been in good form all weekend, topping two of the three practice sessions, a week after getting into trouble with his team after posting sensitive data on Twitter. He has yet to commit to staying with McLaren, which has fueled talk about a possible move to Mercedes.I havent had any distractions this weekend, so its been quite positive...pretty smooth so far, Hamilton said. Its been a tough weekend but weve managed to work on the setup and the guys done a fantastic job. So, congratulations to the team. Its great obviously for the team to have me and Jenson at the front.Hamilton, however, wasnt completely satisfied with his performance in qualifying.I think practice was a lot better for me, he said. I had much, much better laps in practice but I cant complain. Generally I didnt think that lap was anywhere near good enough. But nonetheless Im happy and Im really happy for the team because theyve been doing a fantastic job.It is McLarens 63rd front row sweep in Formula One a record for the sport. It is also the teams third all front row this season. Its fantastic for the team, Button said. I think the last few races have really shown our strength and qualifying both of us on the front row is great. I dont know if any other team has been able to do that this year.Well start thinking about tomorrow in a little while. Even being on the front row, its not going to be an easy race here but its the best place to be.On Friday, Alonso endured a suspected engine failure in the first practice and a brake problem and gearbox failure during the afternoon session. His problems seemed to be behind him in the morning, but more technical issues saw him finish nearly 1.5 seconds behind Hamilton in qualifying. It could be another troublesome weekend for Alonso, who saw his lead over Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel cut to 24 points last weekend after his race was ended following a wild multi-car accident caused by Lotus driver Romain Grosjean at the start. There will be some consolation for the Spaniard in that Red Bull has struggled as well so far at Monza. Vettel finished outside the top 10 in all three practices, although the defending champion was sixth in qualifying.Paul Di Resta qualified fourth, but will be pushed down to ninth because of five-place grid penalty for changing gearbox.A gearbox is supposed to last five consecutive races under FIA regulations, but the Force India team was forced to place a new one in Di Restas car after last weekends Belgium Grand Prix.Five-time Monza winner Michael Schumacher, who was fastest in the first practice session, finished fifth. He moves up a place because of Di Restas penalty, as do Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Kimi Raikkonen and Kamui Kobayashi.

Boxing: Klitschko defends WBC heavyweight title

Posted:

Ukraines Vitali Klitschko successfully defended his WBC heavyweight title here Saturday after the referee stopped his bout with Germanys Manuel Charr in the fourth round due to a cut over the challengers right eye.The fight was stopped with 56sec remaining in the round.Klitschko improved his record to 45-2, while Charr, who was unbeaten before his meeting with Ukraines 41-year-old veteran, fell to 21-1.I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to win today by a real knockout, not a technical one, said Klitschko.I was ready to contine the bout and Charr was also ready for further boxing but it was the decision of the doctor and the referee, who are responsible for it and we could do nothing about it.Fighting in the 30,000-seater Olimpiyski indoor sports arena, the hugely-experienced Klitschko started the bout as a hot favourite in what was his 17th world heavyweight championship fight.Charr, a 27-year-old Beirut-born former kickboxer, brought with him an unblemished record in 21 fights and a seventh ranking by the WBC, but none of his opponents had been of the highest calibre. The much smaller Charr was immediately on the defensive as the towering Klitschko stalked him behind his powerful jab and it was only in the closing seconds that the German attempted a couple of tentative punches.Klitschko stayed well on top in the second round and he sent Charr crashing to the floor seconds before the bell for a standing eight count with a right hook to the side of the head. The German challenger recovered well though and caught Klitschko with a brief flurry of punches in the third, but it was the Ukrainian who again won the round. The fight then came to an abrupt end in the fourth when a Klitschko left hook brought a gush of blood from above Charrs right eye and the referee was quick to step in and end the contest. The German was furious with the decision, kicking the ropes in his anger, but it was clear from the amount of blood that there was no way he could continue. In the first two rounds Charr was concentrated on defence only and it was slightly difficult for me as I like it better when my opponents are fighting back, Klitschko said.In the third and fourth he started to come out of his shell more and I had more chances to attack. But Charr is a true fighter. He was ready to fight to the end. I think this defeat will not stop him and I believe he has chances for a promising career in boxing.
