Wave of Iraq attacks kills at least 33

Posted:

Militants carried out bombings and shootings in 10 cities and towns in Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 33 people and wounding 106, in the latest wave of deadly attacks to hit the country. In total, at least 253 people have been killed and 803 wounded in attacks in Iraq this month, according to an AFP tally based on security and medical sources.Insurgents are regarded as weaker than when violence reached its peak in 2006 and 2007 but they remain able to carry out spectacular mass-casualty attacks and have shown they can strike heavily-guarded sites such as prisons and police stations. Most of Sundays attacks were centred in Baghdad and the nearby areas of Taji, Madain and Tarmiyah, where an interior ministry official said 25 people were killed and 59 wounded. Medical sources put the toll at 28 dead and 77 wounded. In Baghdad, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed car in the central Karrada district, targeting the deputy head of police for the area, a police officer at the scene said. The explosion scattered debris dozens of metres (yards) from the seat of the blast, shattering store windows and burning several cars. A headless torso lay surrounded by pieces of flesh.Police, most of them armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, deployed in force on the street, and a fire truck sprayed down the blast site.We were working and we heard a loud explosion, and the air changed and everything exploded, said Firas Dawood, the owner of a nearby shop. What do I say about the security measures? Shit, he said.Another store owner who gave his name only as Abu Ihab, said: I was in my shop and I heard the sound of a very powerful explosion. Dust was everywhere. We were sitting in the shop while police were collecting flesh, he said. Human flesh was on the sidewalk, being collected and put in plastic bags. When the explosion happens, it does not care about any security measures, he said. I sit in my shop and I am afraid for my life.Abu Ihab soon had another reason to be afraid, as the blast was followed by a second car bomb that hit the same area.Gunmen also shot dead a policeman in the Al-Amil neighbourhood of south Baghdad, an attack followed by a car bomb that exploded after a police patrol came to investigate, the interior ministry official said. And a police colonel was wounded by gunmen in the Mansur area of west Baghdad, the ministry official and a medical source said.North of the capital, four car bombs exploded in Taji. The first went off near a Shiite place of worship, followed by three others in the same Al-Askari neighbourhood of the town, a security official said, adding that women and children were among the dead.In Madain, south of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, a witness said. And two roadside bombs targeted army and police patrols in the Tarmiyah area, north of Baghdad.A car bomb targeting a police convoy killed two policemen and wounded seven others near Baquba, north of Baghdad, while another car bomb exploded south of Baquba, killing one person and wounding seven, police and a doctor from Baquba General Hospital said.North of Baquba, a car bomb targeting police Brigadier General Mohammed al-Tamimi wounded five people, a police colonel and the doctor said.South of Baghdad, in Kut, a car bomb exploded near a police river patrol station, killing a civilian and three police, and wounding seven people, a police captain and a medical official said.In the main northern city of Mosul, a car bomb exploded near an army patrol, wounding 15 people, among them a soldier, while a roadside bomb wounded four policemen, doctors and police said. And an explosives-rigged vehicle exploded near an army patrol south of the northern oil city of Kirkuk, killing a soldier and wounding a civilian and another soldier, police and a doctor said.South of Baghdad, police arrested two people as they attempted to drive explosives-packed vehicles into the city of Diwaniyah, provincial police chief Brigadier General Abdul Jalil al-Assadi said.

Syria suicide blast kills 4 at security compound

Posted:

A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb inside a Syrian security compound in a remote, predominantly Kurdish town Sunday, killing at least four people, state media said, in a new sign that the countrys largest ethnic minority might be drawn into a widening civil war.Opposition activists said at least eight Syrian intelligence agents were killed and several dozen people hurt in the attack in the northeastern town of Qamishli, more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the capital Damascus.Syrias more than 2 million Kurds, long marginalized, have largely stayed out of the fighting, though some have participated in protests against the regime of President Bashar Assad. The uprising against Assad that erupted 18 months ago has gradually morphed into a bloody civil war. The conflict has killed more than 30,000 people, activists say, and has devastated entire neighborhoods in Syrias main cities, including Aleppo, the scene of intense fighting Sunday. The leaders of Turkey and Egypt, among Assads main foreign foes, sent stern warnings to the regime and its allies, in speeches to Turkeys ruling party.Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said that we will be on the side of the Syrian people until the bloodshed ends, the cruel regime is gone and Syrian people reach their just rights.Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Syrias allies Russia, China and Iran to end their support for Assad, warning that history will not forgive those who stand together with cruel regimes.Turkey has given shelter to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees and Turkish soil has served as a crucial logistical center for rebel fighters since they captured several Syrian border crossings with Turkey over the summer. Also over the summer, Syrian troops left several towns and villages in the Kurdish northeast, possibly to divert forces to overstretched troops fighting in hotspots elsewhere. The regime ceded de facto control to Kurdish fighters who began exercising a degree of autonomy unheard of before. However, the regime has maintained a security presence in Qamishli, which abuts the Turkish border, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sundays blast. Several previous suicide attacks in Syria were claimed by a Syrian militant group, the Al-Nusra Front.Syrian state media said the explosion went off in an area housing security officers. It said four people were killed, dozens wounded and nearby buildings damaged. An amateur video posted online by activists showed a column of white smoke rising between buildings in Qamishli. The Observatory said eight Syrian intelligence agents were killed and at least 40 people wounded in the explosion.

Strong quake strikes southeast Colombia

A strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck in the Andes mountains of south-west Colombia Sunday but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, Colombian and US earthquake monitoring services reported. The quake struck at 1631 GMT some 20 kilometers east of the Colombian town of La Vega and 326 kilometers north-east of Quito, Ecuador, said the US Geological Service, which monitors earthquakes worldwide. In Colombia, the National Seismological Network reported the same magnitude and said the epicenter of the quake was 169 kilometers underground. The director of Colombias disaster relief service, Carlos Ivan Marquez, said that so far there were only reports of minor damage to homes in one village. In Colombia the quake was felt in 10 central and western provinces. There was no tsunami alert. The quake shook Ecuadors capital Quito and other parts of the country for about 30 seconds, and was felt particularly in tall buildings in the capital.Radio stations in Ecuador interrupted their broadcasting to report on the quake, which also prompted many posts on Twitter. Both Colombia and Ecuador are located in a region prone to seismic activity.

Thousands on Paris streets to denounce EU 'austerity' pact

Posted:

Thousands of left-wing protesters took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to denounce the European Union fiscal pact forcing governments to stick to tough deficit limits.Chanting Resistance, protesters marched through central Paris in a rally organisers said was aimed at fighting EU-imposed austerity, not at criticising the government of Socialist President Francois Hollande. This day is the day the French people launch a movement against the policy of austerity, one-time presidential contender and Left Front leader Jean-Luc Melenchon said at the march.Melenchon denied the protest was aimed at Hollande, saying: This is a left-wing demonstration under a left-wing government.Organisers said 80,000 people took part in the rally. It was very successful, beyond our expectations, said Annick Coupe, a spokeswoman for the Solidaires union.Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault is to open what is expected to be a long and difficult debate on the fiscal pact in the National Assembly on Tuesday. The pact, agreed by EU leaders in March, requires its signatories to write into law a commitment to limit structural deficits to within 0.5 percent of gross domestic product under normal circumstances. Many on the French left -- including within the Socialists and their Green Party allies -- have said they will vote against the measure, but with right-wing deputies backing the pact it is expected to be approved.Speaking to deputies from the left-wing PRG party on Sunday, Ayrault said approving the pact would be an essential step in resolving the debt crisis threatening the eurozone and its single currency.Francois Hollande and I will never take the responsibility ... of making the euro disappear, he said. The future of the eurozone is at stake.Hollandes government on Friday unveiled a 2013 budget aimed at plugging the 37-billion-euro hole in Frances public finances through tax rises and spending cuts.About 1,500 people also protested against austerity measures in Brussels, police said, in a demonstration called by left-wing groups and unions. The protest was aimed at pushing for measures in Belgium and Europe to fight against poverty and share prosperity equally, the CSC union said. The Paris march came the day after tens of thousands of people massed on the streets of Portugals and Spains capitals to protest austerity cuts.In Madrid, demonstrators faced off with riot police and denounced the conservative governments deep budget cuts, while in Lisbon, protesters rallied against an austerity programme that is expected to get even tougher to meet pledges made to the countrys international creditors.

Ronaldo hat-trick as Real Madrid rout Deportivo

Posted:

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick as Real Madrid kept on the trail of leaders Barcelona with a 5-1 rout of Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday. The visitors took a shock lead after 15 minutes through Riki but Madrid quickly bounced back with Ronaldo hitting his first from the penalty spot after Angel Di Maria was felled. It was Di Maria himself who put his team ahead and then Ronaldo got his second shortly before the break. With Madrid controlling the game Pepe headed home and Ronaldo scored another penalty in the second half to complete the rout and remain eight points behind Barcelona who beat Sevilla 3-2 on Saturday. While Barca have won all six of their opening games, Madrid made a stuttering start but will now go into next weekends El Clasico with back-to-back wins and Ronaldo hitting form.Coach Jose Mourinho chose to rest Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa and, in a new-look midfield, Sami Khedira was joined by Luka Modric in the centre, who up until Sunday had played further forward. At the back, Sergio Ramos switched to right back with Raphael Varane coming into the centre.Madrid had plenty of early pressure with Ronaldo having a snap shot after 10 minutes which keeper Daniel Aranzubia got down well to block and then the Portuguese fired wide from the edge of the area. The visitors had seen little of the ball but went ahead through practically their first attack thanks to a Madrid defence which had gaping holes. The ball was played into Riki who found plenty of space between Varane and Pepe and then slotted into the corner.Di Maria was lively in attack and seemed the most likely to offer a response. He chipped over the crossbar from a tight angle and then won a penalty after being pulled down by Manuel Pablo which was dispatched by Ronaldo. It was Di Maria who then put Madrid ahead with a clinical finish inside the area after a fine through ball from Modric. While his big rival at Barcelona Lionel Messi has continued his blistering form this season, it has not been the same for Ronaldo who has not reached his usual standards, claiming that he was unhappy. He lacked his killer touch after bursting past Manuel Pablo after 32 minutes as he fired wide but he showed desire to pounce and extend Madrids lead before the break.Sergio Ramos shot was well saved by Aranzubia and Ronaldo was the first to react as he dived in to head the ball over the line.Kaka was given a rare appearance after the break and Alonso was also introduced as Madrid were able to stroll in the second half with Deportivo offering little.Pepe headed in an Alonso free-kick after 65 minutes and then Ronaldo got his third of the night again from the penalty spot after a handball by Evaldo Santos.Earlier Valladolid demolished Rayo Valladolid 6-1, Osasuna made easy work of Levante with a 4-0 victory while Granada came out on top 2-1 against Celta Vigo.Later Sunday, Atletico Madrid aim to maintain their unbeaten start to the season away to Espanyol.

French police detain handball players in fix probe

Posted:

Police detained eight Montpellier handball players and several of their associates after the French national champion teams match at Paris arena on Sunday as part of an investigation into suspected match-fixing, a police official said.Nikola Karabatic, a two-time Olympic champion with the French national team who is considered one of the worlds top players, and his brother Luka were among those taken into custody after Sundays match against PSG, the official said. The brothers were among more than 10 people held for questioning in the offices of the judicial polices Central Service for Horseracing and Games in Nanterre, west of Paris, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation. The official declined to specify how many people were being held.Montpellier has been accused of match-fixing after French media reported last week that several players had intentionally helped lose a match that their relatives and other associates had bet on. Montpellier was on track to win the national title when it lost to Cesson-Rennes 31-28 on May 12.A team spokeswoman told The Associated Press that police spoke to some players after the match, but she declined to comment further.Shortly after Sundays match ended in a 38-24 win for PSG, the 28-year-old Karabatic was interviewed by Canal Plus TV about the defeat but he walked away when asked to comment on the investigation. TV images showed Karabatic being led away from the Stade Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Paris by plain-clothes officers, and climbing into a car.Reports last week said that eight Montpellier players in total are suspected of involvement, and that the bets in question totaled €5,000. The police official told the AP that the total winnings amounted to more than €200,000.Montpellier president Remy Levy appeared to distance club management from the players targeted, saying in a statement last week that he vigorously protests the implication that the club itself may have been involved.Joel Delplanque, president of the French Handball Federation, told BFMTV that he hoped the investigation would be carried out in most serious and quick manner possible so that once and for all we will find out what happened and who in fact was responsible for these anomalies weve now learned about.

PPP has reservations on Supreme Court: Bilawal

Posted:

Chairman PPP, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, while delivering a speech in New York at a PPP public meeting, said the PPP had reservations on the Supreme Court judgments but still wanted to uphold rule of law.We believe a truly independent and impartial judiciary is a fundamental component to a democratic Pakistan. That is why we respect the majesty of justice and accept the rulings of our Supreme Court, despite reservations, he argued. If the courts insist on putting the grave of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on trial, to repeat the mistakes of history, refuse to redeem themselves from the role they have played in the judicial murder of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the ultimate decisions will lie in the court of the people and the courts of history, he said while hinting at the NRO case proceedings in the SC.While we can agree to disagree on whether justice is being done, we must all agree a basic principle of justice is that justice should not only be done but it should be seen to be done. The judiciary in Pakistan will never build its reputation as a truly independent and impartial judiciary if there are to be double standards, he said.It is highly inappropriate, for instance, that in the case of the Chief Justice’s own son the investigator, the prosecutor and the judges who will hear the case are cherry picked by the court. My hope is that the Court will find its rightful role and carry out its duties in such a way that it restores its institutional credibility. If the Court cannot or will not, we the people must call for the judicial reforms needed in a mature democracy, he said with reference to Dr. Arsalan case.Bilawal said that his party is committed to providing the right to vote and contest elections to dual-natioanlity holders. We are committed to insuring your right to vote in elections. We are committed to the idea that dual-nationals should be able to participate in all our country’s civic matters, and that includes the right to contest elections. No unelected people have the right to question the loyalty of anyone elected by the people of Pakistan.Bilawal urged the expatriate Pakistanis to have their voices heard in the next election. If they don’t let you run, if they don’t let you vote, speak to your family and friends in Pakistan, come back to Pakistan yourselves, and support the Party that has not given up on your voice and your vote, he said in an obvious reference to the Supreme Court decision that bars dual natioanlity holders from contesting elections or hokding public office. It is under this PPP government that overseas remittances have increased from $6 billion, from when we replaced Musharraff’s dictatorship, to almost $13 billion under our democratic government, he appreciated while assuring the audience that the PPP would always stand by the oversees Pakistanis. He said Pakistan was undergoing the first peaceful transition of power in its 66 year history. Our government has created the first social safety net for the poor in our nation’s history, and has passed more legislation for women in this parliament than in all past parliaments combined. From domestic violence to property rights, the women of Pakistan are being protected by the law, he claimed. He maintained taht the PPP had come into power amidst the worst global recession in recent history. Despite external shocks that led to fiscal deficit, Pakistan has against all odds managed to have an annual GDP growth rate of almost 4%, he pointed out while adding that exports and agriculture produce were surging and efforts were underway to check inflation. On the situation in Balochistan, he said with every missing person and with every dead body, a Baloch family loses hope in Pakistan. We have stopped living in denial, and we cannot let the province bleed the way it has. Musharraf treated the people of Balochistan as enemies of the stat. We have a long way to go in addressing all the wrongs done to them, but at least we’ve started the process, he remarked. In addition, the Balochistan package the government had passed addressed Balochistan’s sense of discrimination and brings it to par with the other provinces in terms of funds, employment and infrastructure. This year, the share of the Balochistan in the new NFC had been more than 95 billion rupees as opposed to less than 40 billion rupees before our government took power, he outlined. He also spoke about the sense of deprivation and discrimination existing in the minority communities of Pakistan. We must protect the minorities within our own borders. Law and order should protect the Christian, the Hindu and any minority faith. Our government stands shoulder to shoulder with all minorities, he asserted.Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also took the opportunity to join the unanimous chorus of condemnation of a vile, hateful, blasphemous video that has unfortunately incited violence across the Muslim world. The unity of all major political parties in Pakistan on this issue is inspirational, he said.In the war against terrorism, he said the current regimes strategy of dialogue, deterrence and development was successful to regain Swat from terrorists. Those planning a peace march into Waziristan should visit the now thriving marketplaces in Swat, which were once the bloody squares where the terrorists hung the bodies of innocent civilians in their hateful campaign of death and destruction, he said while having a dig at Imran Khans plan for a peace march in South Waziristan. We too oppose drone strikes. We will fight this war on our terms and not at the dictation of any foreign power. Unlike the military dictator before us, who took orders from a single phone call, we have taken ownership of our foreign policy. Our Parliament conducted a full review of our foreign policy, giving the people’s approval to our actions. Unlike the military dictator before us, we have not been afraid to stand up to superpowers. We shut the supply routes in protest, we permanently shut Shamsi Air Base, he said.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in New York

Obama, Romney rivalry has little personal history

Posted:

The call was one of the few personal interactions between Obama and Romney.Even as their political fates have become more entwined, Obama and Romney have had little opportunity to connect directly. When the political rivals stand alongside each other during Wednesday nights debate in Denver, it will be their first face-to-face meeting in nearly five years. They have offered kind words about each other in their roles as father and family man.But most of their descriptions during the campaign have been far less complimentary, and that may be the case in the debate, too.

Parents with criminal record not to watch schools sports

Posted:

A school has banned parents from watching their children take part in sports events unless they pass a criminal records check. The Isambard Community School in Swindon, Wilts, insists all parents must clear a Criminal Records Bureau check to weed out potential paedophiles.Neil Park, 54, was furious when he was turned away from watching his son George, 12, play rugby. The father-of-five said: I was turned away from the school because I had not been CRB checked.I couldnt believe it. Government guidelines state that parents are allowed to watch games. But any strangers can be questioned and requested to show the appropriate paperwork, which is fair enough.George was really upset by it all. What are they going to stop you going to next? Parents evening? The school play?Or what if England under 16s are playing at the County Ground , will they ask all fans there to be CRB checked? The school introduced the new measure at the start of the term to prevent strangers from accessing other parts of the school from the playing fields.A spokesman said: It is with regret that from now on we will be unable to accommodate parents wishing to spectate at our sports fixtures unless they are in possession of an up-to-date Swindon Council CRB check. At Isambard we take safeguarding very seriously and because of this we are unable to leave gates open for access to sporting venues at anytime during the school day.The current access arrangements are frustrating for both Isambard staff and parents and have recently resulted in reception staff and PE staff being on the receiving end of verbal abuse from parents who have become frustrated trying to get into or out of the school.Other schools in the area have no plans to implement this new policy however.Clive Zimmerman, head at Lydiard Park Academy, Swindon, said: We dont have that policy here because there are always staff supervising the children. We think it is important that parents can support their children. We had our inaugural hockey game at the Link Centre this week, and half of that stadium was filled with parents which is fantastic.
