Israel air strike kills one Palestinian in Gaza: medics Posted: An Israeli air strike killed one Palestinian and wounded two others, including a child, in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian medical sources said. The attack, one of several on the coastal strip over the course of the day, targeted an unidentified man driving a motorcyle in the northern town of Jabaliya, they said.A 12-year-old boy and a man who were near the motorcycle were wounded. An Israeli military spokesman said the attack targeted members of the Mujahedeen Shura Council, a Salafist group, who were responsible for terrorist activities.Following the fatal strike, the air force also hit a training camp in Gaza City of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the strip, Palestinian sources said. No casualties were reported.Earlier on Saturday, the air force hit three targets in Gaza, hours after a rocket fired from the territory exploded near a house in southern Israel, sources on both sides said.Aircraft targeted a terror activity site in the northern Gaza Strip, and two terror activity sites in the central Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed, a statement from the Israeli military said. The sites were targeted in response to the rocket fire towards southern Israel.Palestinian security officials said there were no casualties from the strikes, one of which hit an unmanned training camp of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the ruling Hamas movement, south of Gaza City. They said the other two hit open ground near the Nusseirat and Al-Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza, possibly used as rocket launch sites. On Friday night, Gaza militants fired a Grad rocket that exploded in the yard of a residential building in the southern Israeli town of Netivot. One person was taken for medical treatment suffering from shock, and the building was damaged by the rocket. The Mujahedeen Shura Council issued a statement saying it fired the rocket on Netivot. There has been a flurry of tit-for-tat violence on the Gaza-Israel border in recent days.On Thursday, Israeli warplanes raided a training camp of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, several hours after Gaza militants fired two rockets into southern Israel. On Wednesday the Israeli air force struck targets in northern Gaza, also without causing casualties. The strikes came after rocket fire that was also claimed by the Mujahedeen Shura Council.
Blasts in southern Afghanistan kill 9 Posted: A suicide bomber on a motorbike blew himself up at a local intelligence office in southern Afghanistan, in the deadliest of three attacks that left at least nine people dead on Saturday, officials said.Six people four Afghan intelligence officers, a coalition service member and a civilian employee working for the coalition died in the bombing, which took place in the Maruf district of Kandahar province. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi saying in a text message to reporters that the group was targeting international forces operating in Afghanistan.Kandahar provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal said the blast occurred in the morning at an entry point to the intelligence office. He said three other Afghan intelligence officers were wounded, including two who were in critical condition.Insurgents frequently target Afghan security forces and government officials in an effort to weaken the government.Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the international coalition, confirmed that one coalition service member and a civilian working with the coalition died in the bombing. The wounded were evacuated to coalition medical facilities for treatment, he added.A second attack killed two Afghan policemen and left three others wounded in Qalat, the capital of neighboring Zabul province, provincial spokesman Shariullah Nasari said. After a police vehicle ran over a roadside mine, he said, a second blast struck police who had rushed to aid their colleagues.NATO also said that another service member with the U.S.-led coalition was killed in a roadside bombing in the south. It declined to release further information, pending notification of family members of the deceased.

Syria bans Turkish flights in retaliatory move Posted: Syria has banned Turkish passenger flights from Syrian airspace from midnight (2100 GMT) Saturday, state news agency SANA said, citing the foreign ministry. The decision, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, was in retaliation for Turkeys decision to stop Syrian civil aviation flights over its territory, SANA said. The Turkish government has not announced a similar ban for Syrian civilian aircraft. However, Turkish jets forced a Syrian passenger plane en route from Moscow to Damascus to make an emergency landing in Ankara on Thursday on suspicion it was carrying weapons. Both Damascus and Moscow denied the claim, and the plane was allowed on Friday to continue on its journey.Meanwhile Turkey has stopped using Syrian airspace on their flights, amid escalating tensions between Ankara and Damascus. The suspension came after Turkey and Syria engaged in sporadic cross-border shelling last week.
Space shuttle on home stretch to LA retirement home Posted: Thousands of Angelenos turned out Saturday to watch the US space shuttle Endeavour make the final leg of its journey to its LA retirement home at the stately pace of two miles per hour.On the second and final day of its 12-mile (19 kilometers) trip across Los Angeles, the spacecraft -- which zoomed at 17,500 miles per hour when in Earths orbit -- was aiming to reach its berth in the California Science Center by nightfall. The day started with a public party for the shuttle, which left LA International (LAX) Airport on Friday and was transported by cranes across the 405 freeway, a major north-south route, overnight. What a great view, huh? California Science Center head Jeffrey Rudolph asked the crowds in Inglewood, where the shuttle stopped for 30 minutes of speeches and celebrations, music from Men in Black blaring in the background. The final leg of the trip was not without challenges: the enormous 78-ton vehicle, mounted on a huge, computerized, multi-part transporter, had to negotiate some of the narrowest stretches of its route during the day.Organizers had to steer the massive white craft through a series of turns -- including at least one that squeezed it to within inches of nearby buildings -- before hitting the real home straight down Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. Some 400 trees have had to be cut down -- initially provoking protests from locals -- and power lines turned off to make way for the vehicle. The shuttle, which flew more than 115 million miles in its two-decade career, landed at LAX three weeks ago, piggy-backed on a specially-fitted 747.Since then, it had been housed in an airport hangar. But it was rolled out overnight Thursday for its final journey. The shuttles high-tech carrier consists of four separate wheeled units, which can each turn independently to maneuver their load around difficult corners. The separated segments are also able to straddle the center divider of LAs wide city streets -- some of which had hosted the trees cut down in advance. Authorities placated protesters with pledges to plant several times as many replacement trees.Former shuttle commander Mark Kelly, who captained Endeavours final flight, said he hoped the craft would become an inspiration for future generations of astronauts.Maybe someday one of these kids that see Endeavour, look up at it at the California Science Center, will be that person that walks on the planet Mars, he told CNN, adding: That would be a great thing to see. After NASA brought an end to the 30-year shuttle program last year, major US cities battled for the right to house the four retired vehicles.Enterprise, the prototype that never flew into space, is now on permanent display on the runway of the Intrepid aircraft carrier in New York. The Kennedy Space Center will keep Atlantis, and Discovery is on display at a museum outside Washington. Two other shuttles were destroyed in flight. Challenger disintegrated shortly after liftoff in 1986, and Columbia broke apart upon re-entry to Earth in 2003. Both disasters killed everyone on board.
Top-ranked Azarenka, Goerges into Linz final Posted: Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka reached her ninth final of the season on Saturday and will play Julia Goerges for the title at the Generali Ladies. In the semifinals, Azarenka beat Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-2, 6-1, and Goerges rallied to defeat Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.Azarenka, a winner of five events including the Australian Open this year, is 3-1 against Goerges though she has never dropped a set against the German.Azarenkas only defeat came in Stuttgart last year when she pulled out with a shoulder injury after winning the opening set. Goerges went on to win that event, the most recent of her two career titles. She also won in Bad Gastein in 2010.Obviously I am the underdog, she is the world No. 1, Goerges said. I will try to play my own game, focus on myself and show her how dangerous my game can be.Azarenka is on a winning streak of 11 matches, and yet to concede a set. She won in Beijing last week for her 12th career title and pulled out before the quarterfinals at Tokyo the week before. In Linz, she hasnt dropped more than two games in any set.Early in her semifinal against Begu, Azarenka produced some unusual mistakes and dropped her opening service game before cruising to victory. The 19th-ranked Goerges, who also reached the final in Dubai in February, dropped serve three times and double-faulted on set point against Flipkens. She settled with an early break in the second and dominated the rest of the match. She served well so it was hard to get into the match, Goerges said. I am happy I managed to find my game in the second set and win the match.

Pietersen ends exile with 14 runs for Daredevils Posted: Controversial England batsman Kevin Pietersen struck 14 runs off 18 balls when he ended his cricket exile Saturday by playing for Delhi Daredevils in a Champions League Twenty20 game.Batting at No 3 for the Indian Premier League franchise in a first round pool match at SuperSport Park, Pietersen tried an on-side pull off Brett Lee and was caught by Sunil Narine at deep mid-wicket.Pietersen managed just one four in his first appearance since being sidelined by England during a summer Test series against South Africa following a text message storm. The South Africa-born batsman allegedly criticised England teammates -- including highly respected skipper Andrew Strauss -- in texts sent to rival players.England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier later alleged in a radio interview that Pietersen was provoked into texting the South Africans, but the claim was swiftly denied.Absolute rubbish, said Cricket South Africa acting chief executive Jacques Faul while the national cricket players association demanded that Collier apologise.Pietersen is keen to resume his international career and there has been media speculation that he may be added to the England squad for a tour of India from November.Playing cricket for England is the pinnacle of any career and I want an opportunity to do that again as soon as possible, Pietersen said after mending relations with his adopted country. Some of the proudest and best moments of my life have been in an England shirt and I want them to continue for as long as possible. I am entirely committed to completing the reintegration process. That will take place over the coming weeks and I then want to resume by England career in all formats, hopefully until the 2015 World Cup, as long as my body allows.Fast bowlers Stuart Broad and James Anderson are looking forward to the return of Pietersen, who made his Test debut for England in mid-2005 against Australia. The team have no issue with KP coming back if the management decide he is ready to. It is in their hands at the moment. From a team perspective his integration will be easy, said Twenty20 skipper Broad.Anderson believes the time has come to draw a line under the Pietersen saga and focus on the challenge of tackling World Cup title holders India on the sub-continent.Hopefully we can draw a line under the whole episode and crack on with the tour of India. We want to get back to number one and need our best players to do that. Kevin is one of our best.Another England bowler, Graeme Swann, said it was disappointing that the Pietersen affair had overshadowed the final Test of retiring England skipper Strauss. He was such an unbelievable servant to our game and such a brilliant captain and for him to have his last match tarnished by the while sorry affair is a great shame for me.
Thousands protest in Spain, Portugal against austerity cut Posted: Thousands of protesters in Portugal and Spain marched Saturday in fresh protests against the austerity measures their governments have imposed to tackle their debt crisis.Portuguese demonstrators staged marches that took on a festive air in the capital Lisbon and a number of other cities. In Lisbon, actors, singers, singers and dancers took centre-stage on a special podium set in one of the citys main squares.Culture is resistance, the artists are in the street, was the slogan for what was billed as a day of cultural protests. Organisers said several thousand people had turned out.The government of centre-right Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, which is pushing through swingeing public spending cuts to meet the demands of the countrys international creditors, was the main target of the protests. The troika and the government out, said one banner, a reference to the countrys international creditors: the European Union, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.Portugal has had enough of being robbed and humiliated, one leaflet read.In a separate march, Portugals main trades union the CGTP led several thousand marchers to the front of parliament, where deputies are expected to vote through a harsh austerity budget on Monday. The government is hanging by a thread, said CGTP leader Armenio Carlos. The quicker we cut it, the quicker the government will collapse.Portugal received a 78-billion-euro ($101 billion) bailout in May 2011 to help it battle its debt crisis. In recent weeks however, tens of thousands of Portuguese have marched in protest at the painful spending cuts. The unions have also called a new general strike on November 14.In neighbouring Spain, around 2,000 people joined a protest in the centre of Madrid.Dont owe, wont pay, the marchers chanted to the clatter of saucepans being rattled. The idea is to make some noice so they hear us, said one protester, Marita. But we already know that these leaders dont have ears for us.The marchers, including many families, started their march from the local offices of the European Union. Then they marched across to the citys Puerta del Sol square, the symbolic home of the indignants movement that has sprung up in resistance to the governments austerity measures. An opinion poll earlier this week suggested that 70 percent of Spaniards disapprove of conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoys rule as the nation veers towards a sovereign bailout. When the poll asked if they believed the government knew how to confront the economic situation properly, 73 percent of respondents said no.Spains economy is in recession, with one in four workers unemployed. A heavy debt refinancing burden and high borrowing costs are pushing the country towards seeking a sovereign bailout. The European Central Bank last month revealed a plan to drive down the borrowing costs of debt-wracked states by buying their sovereign bonds but only under strict conditions that Madrid hesitates to accept.
