Ali Zeidan, ex-Gaddafi opponent, elected Libya PM Posted: Libyas General National Congress elected Ali Zeidan, a long-time opponent of deposed dictator Moamer Gaddafi, as prime minister on Sunday, the assemblys chief said.Ali Zeidan is elected prime minister and is asked to propose a cabinet within two weeks, Mohammed Megaryef, president of the national assembly, said in remarks broadcast on television.Benefitting from the backing of the liberal coalition in the 200-seat assembly, Zeidan won 93 of the votes cast, trumping the 85 garnered by the only other candidate, local government minister Mohammed al-Hrari.The liberal National Forces Alliance (NFA), the largest political bloc in the assembly, rallied behind Zeidan, who had been elected to the legislative body on an independent ticket. He had to give up his seat to run for the post of premier.A former career diplomat, Zeidan defected in 1980 while he was serving at the Libyan embassy in India, and spent the next three decades in exile. He was a member of the opposition National Front for the Salvation of Libya, established in 1981 by dissidents abroad, before becoming a Geneva-based advocate for human rights in Libya. The NFA holds 39 of the 80 seats reserved for parties in the assembly. It is headed by Mahmud Jibril, one of the architects of the 2011 revolt that toppled Gaddafis regime.Zeidan, like Jibril, played a key role in winning international recognition for the political leadership of rebels who fought Gaddafis forces after a popular uprising escalated into civil war.Hrari, a 56-year-old academic, is said to have supporters in the Justice and Construction Party, which was launched by the Muslim Brotherhood and represents the second largest force in the assembly with 17 seats. The remaining seats in the assembly are held by smaller parties and 120 independent candidates of mixed ideological and political convictions. The difficulty of forming a government that satisfies key parties and players crystallised last week when the assembly rejected a crisis cabinet proposed by elected prime minister Mustafa Abu Shagur and dismissed him.Abu Shagur said the two largest political blocs turned against him because he would not cave into their demands for a raft of ministries. The newly elected prime minister faces many challenges in a country still awash with arms and struggling for reconciliation nearly a year after Gaddafis ouster and death.
Iran hands visiting UN Syria envoy proposal Posted: Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Sunday gave visiting UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi a proposal aimed at ending the conflict in key regional ally Syria.Salehi said Tehran had handed its unofficial detailed proposal in writing aimed at solving the Syrian crisis to Brahimi as well as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, in comments broadcast on Arabic-language Al-Alam television. He did not go into details about the proposals, only adding Tehran would support efforts by the international envoy.Brahimi, who arrived in Tehran from Turkey after meeting with Saudi officials, welcomed the Iranian initiative. The Damascus regime accuses Riyadh and Ankara of arming rebels seeking to overthrow it.I thank you for the proposals and as I told you there are some ideas in your proposals which can help by adding to that forwarded by other nations who are also important with regards to the Syrian situation, Brahimi said in a joint press briefing. We hope all these ideas gather into a project to put an end to the Syrian peoples nightmare.I am repeating the call by the United Nations secretary general (Ban Ki-moon) for the initiation of a ceasefire by the Syrian government and asking the opposition to reciprocate once the government commenced, he added.Brahimi later on Sunday met with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in talks during which the Iranian leader repeated his governments offer of help in solving the Syrian crisis.Iran is ready to cooperate and help in order for the Syrian people to live in calmness and security, reported the presidency website, president.ir.Fighting in Syria means the spread of insecurity in the whole region and efforts exerted to break up Syria will lead to decades of insecurity in the region due to the countrys ethnic structure, Ahmadinejad told the veteran Algerian diplomat. The solution to improve the Syrian situation is for all parties to reach this conclusion that with calmness and security, the Syrian issue can be solved, the Iranian president said.No one should seek to impose his opinion on others and the Syrian people in completely free elections should say their views and everyone should respect the Syrian peoples choice, he added.Brahimi was quoted by the website as saying that he sought Irans help and cooperation in bringing about stability and security in Syria. The international envoy is due to meet top security official Saeed Jalili on Monday before leaving for Baghdad later that day, the state televisions website said. The veteran troubleshooter is currently on a regional tour aimed at finding a solution to the 19-month conflict in Syria after Damascus rejected a UN call to implement a unilateral ceasefire.Iran, the main backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, seeks a political solution to the conflict and supports the envoys mediation efforts.More than 33,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assads rule erupted in March last year, says the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Two killed, 2 hurt in new Israel strike on Gaza: medics Posted: Two men were killed and another two critically wounded on Sunday in an Israeli strike on central Gaza, Palestinian medics said in what was the third deadly raid in 24 hours. The incident occurred just east of Deir al-Balah, with the Israeli military confirming it had targeted a terrorist rocket squad.Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for the Hamas-run health ministry, said the strike had initially killed one man and left three others in critical condition, but one of the wounded died shortly afterwards. Two people were killed -- one of those who was critically wounded died of his wounds, he told AFP.He named the victims as Ezzedine Abu Nasira, 23, and Ahmad Fatayer, 22, both of whom were from Deir al-Balah.Witnesses said the strike targeted a motorcycle, and said that both men were militants.Qudra said both of those wounded in the strike were civilians. An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed there was a targeting of a terrorist rocket squad which had just fired a rocket at southern Israel. They had just fired a rocket at Israel which hit the area of the Eshkol regional council, she said. No-one was injured on the Israeli side.According to the army, more than 500 rockets have hit Israel since the start of 2012, more than 40 of which were fired in the first two weeks of October. It was the third deadly Israeli raid within 24 hours. On Saturday night, the air force targeted a motorcycle in the northern town of Jabaliya, killing a top Salafist leader and a fellow militant.Several hours later, warplanes targeted two militants from the armed wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in the southern city of Khan Yunis, killing one and critically wounding the second.Speaking to the Israeli cabinet on Sunday morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that jihadists were stepping up their attempts to harm Israelis and warned that it would not be tolerated.Global jihad is increasing its efforts to strike at us and we shall continue to act aggressively and forcefully in response, and also with preventive strikes, he said.
Gunmen disguised as police kill 21 at Nigeria mosque Posted: A gang disguised in police uniforms opened fire on worshippers at a mosque in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least 21 people, officials and residents said. The military and locals said the pre-dawn raid in the village of Dogon Dawa in Kaduna state was carried out by armed robbers engaged in a running feud with a local vigilante group.Having been repelled by the community militia last week, the gang returned on Sunday, storming the mosque as people readied for early morning prayers, killing some victims inside the building and some outside. We have 21 killed. Several others have been taken to the hospital with injuries, said Musa Illela of the National Emergency Management Agency in Kaduna.Religiously divided Kaduna has been rocked by waves of sectarian violence in recent months.Suicide bombings at three churches in June that were claimed by Islamist group Boko Haram sparked reprisal violence by Christian mobs who killed dozens of their Muslim neighbours, burning some of their victims bodies. Muslim groups also formed mobs and killed several Christians.Boko Haram, blamed for killing more than 1,400 people in Nigeria since 2010, has repeatedly targeted the state and also attacked Muslim leaders it accuses of not supporting its hardline interpretation of Islam. But military spokesman Colonel Sani Usman told AFP that Sundays shooting was a clear case of armed robbery, and described it as a revenge attack linked to the rivalry between the thieves and the vigilantes.Asked about a potential religious element in the shootings, he said only that the victims were coming from prayers at the mosque.Village resident Dauda Maikudi told AFP that thieves regularly target the area as Dogon Dawa lies not far from a main road used by traders carrying goods and cash between the north and south of Africas most populous country. It was a pre-dawn raid, he said. The attackers... some of them dressed in police uniform, came into the village. They killed eight worshippers in the mosque and killed 13 other residents in the village. We believe they were armed robbers because this area has been bedevilled by armed robbers for years, he added.A local leader, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said he supported Maikudis description of the attackers disguises. The local leader said Dogon Dawas vigilante force has had a series of clashes with the areas criminal groups. He said the gunmen struck just before Sunday mornings call to prayer.

Endeavour finally reaches permanent LA museum home Posted: It took much longer than expected, but the Space shuttle Endeavour has finally reached its permanent resting place at a Los Angeles museum. After a 12-mile (19-kilometer) journey through city streets that included thousands of adoring onlookers, flashing cameras and even the filming of a TV commercial, Endeavour arrived at the California Science Center Sunday to a greeting party of city leaders and other dignitaries that had expected it many hours earlier.Organizers had planned a slow trip, saying the spacecraft that once orbited at more than 17,000 mph (27,000 kph) would move at just 2 mph (3.2 kph) in its final voyage. But that estimate turned out to be generous, with Endeavour often creeping along at a barely detectable pace when it wasnt at a dead stop due to difficult-to-maneuver obstacles like trees and light posts.

Azarenka wins sixth season title in Linz Posted: World number one Victoria Azarenka on Sunday claimed her sixth title this season when she beat German Julia Goerges in straight sets at the Linz WTA tournament. The Belarusian, in her ninth final appearance of 2012, overcame the fifth seed 6-3, 6-4 for a 14th career title. In her first appearance at the tournament, the top seed had lost just 11 games in her first four matches and looked on course for another routine victory as she stormed into a 6-3, 5-0 lead against fifth-seeded Goerges. At 5-0 it felt like such a comfortable lead. I think I won seven games in a row at that point. But then Julia just went for her shots, and I kind of misjudged the situation, Azarenka said.I felt like the match was already in my hands, but Julia is such an unpredictable player, and the momentum can turn around really quickly with her, and it did. I wasnt really expecting to have such a change. But Azarenka soon wrapped up the title when, with Goerges serving at 4-5 and 30-all, she took the last two points.Im glad I stayed in the moment, Azarenka said. I did the right things at that moment to finish the match and Im very happy I managed to win.Azarenkas 2012 trophy haul began with her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, with follow-up victories in Sydney, Doha and Indian Wells. But the 23-year-old then proceeded to lose the three following finals -- including a defeat by Serena Williams at last months US Open -- before her 6-3, 6-1 defeat of world number two Maria Sharapova in Beijing.Azarenka, whose win-loss record is now 13-0 since the US Open, and 26-0 in sets, will have a week off before the WTA Championships in Istanbul.I just want to rest a bit -- it has been a long trip for me, she said.Im happy I have this week to recover, regroup and refocus to go for that last push.Goerges was playing the fifth WTA final of her career and is now 2-3 in those. The German took the court again later on Sunday in the doubles final, where she partnered Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, but that did not go her way either, with Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke winning 6-3, 6-4.
Shane Lowry wins Portugal Masters by 1 shot Posted: Shane Lowry of Ireland won the Portugal Masters on Sunday after a final-round 5-under 66 to edge out Englands Ross Fisher by one stroke.Lowry started the round four shots off the lead, but made an eagle on the par-4 11th to move ahead of overnight leader Bernd Wiesberger. The 25-year-old Lowry then traded the lead with Fisher before taking advantage of the Englishmans bogey on the 16th with a birdie at the 17th.Fisher had one last chance after Lowry bogeyed the 18th but he also bogeyed the hole, allowing the Irishman to claim a second career European Tour win by totaling 14-under 270 on the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course.I cannot believe this, said Lowry, who won 375,000 pounds ($486,000). I cant explain how I feel really. Its a dream come true, Im over the moon. I thought this could be my day, and thankfully it is.It was like playing in Ireland. It was crazy, it was great, added Lowry, who won the Irish Open three years ago as an amateur. Everyone was referring to me as the fellow who won the Irish Open as an amateur, but now Ive won such a prestigious event I dont know what to say.Michael Campbell (68) of New Zealand finished third, two shots behind. Austrias Wiesberger (73) was a further shot back in fourth, followed by Englands Richard Finch (70) in fifth, another stroke behind.
Cape Verde oust Cameroon, Ethiopia also qualify Posted: Cape Verde Islands secured a place at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time Sunday and former champions Ethiopia are back in the big time after a 30-year absence. The much-hyped return of striker and captain Samuel Etoo helped four-time champions Cameroon to a 2-1 home win over Cape Verde, but a 3-2 aggregate loss means a second consecutive failure to reach the African football showcase.Alula Girma and Saladin Seid scored within three minutes during the second half in Addis Ababa to earn Ethiopia a 2-0 victory over Sudan and a ticket to South Africa next January on away goals after a 5-5 aggregate deadlock. An early Antonio Pereira goal was just what Cape Verde needed to settle the nerves in the intimidating cauldron of a packed 60,000-seat Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde.Achille Emana levelled soon after and there was relentless Indomitable Lions second-half pressure, including an Etoo attempt that rebounded off the woodwork, but all they had to show for it was a late Fabrice Olinga goal.Etoo was back after a year of international inactivity due to an eight-month ban imposed by the national football federation for instigating a bonus-related boycott of a friendly in Algeria. He also refused to turn up for the first leg in Cape Verde last month, labelling the national squad amateurish and badly managed, and his absence contributed to the worst day in Cameroonian football.Portuguese-speaking Cape Verde is an archipelago off the coast of Senegal with a population of just 500,000, and the national squad consists mainly of footballers at unfashionable European clubs. The qualification of the Ethiopian Black Lions confirmed a recent upsurge of fortunes that has seen them lead a 2014 World Cup qualifying group after holding South Africa away and defeating Central African Republic at home. They also won on away goals against Benin in the first elimination round for the 2013 Cup of Nations and now return to a tournament they won for the only time 50 years ago.Sudan won a goal-flush first encounter 5-3 thanks to a late Mohamed Al Tahir brace and were barely troubled during the opening half at the national stadium in the heart of the Ethiopian capital. As the hour mark passed without a goal it was looking good for the visitors, and then Girma and Egypt-based Seid turned the match on its head to the delight of a sell-out 30,000 crowd.Alain Traore struck five minutes into stoppage time to give Burkina Faso a 3-1 home win over giant-killers Central African Republic, who took a one-goal lead into the tie having stunned seven-time champions Egypt in the last round.Former Manchester United signing Manucho Goncalves scored twice in the early minutes in Luanda to secure a 2-0 win for Angola over Zimbabwe, overall victory on away goals after a 3-3 tie, and a fifth consective Africa Cup appearance.Niger left it much later to upset Guinea 2-0 and squeeze through on aggregate after a solitary-goal first leg loss with Mohammed Chikoto and Issoufou Garba netting in the closing stages.Emmanuel Adebayor of Tottenham was on target for Togo in a 2-1 win over 2012 co-hosts Gabon, who were held at home in the first leg. Wome Dove was the other Togolese marksman and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a late consolation goal.Equatorial Guinea halved a four-goal first-leg deficit against the Democratic Republic of Congo after 35 minutes in Malabo, but Youssouf Mulumbu reduced the arrears before half-time and the home team had to settle for a hollow 2-1 win.Any hope Libya had of overhauling a one-goal loss first time out against Algeria did not last long in Blida with El Arbi Hilal Soudani and Islam Slimani scoring within seven minutes and the home side cruised to a 2-0 victory.
