But he lashed out at his countrys South Asian neighbor for bringing up Indias predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir in a speech last week by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari. An unwarranted reference has been made to Jammu and Kashmir from this podium, he said, adding, We wish to make it abundantly clear that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.A violent separatist insurgency and the ensuing crackdown by Indian forces have killed about 68,000 people in Kashmir, where public resentment against Indian rule runs deep. |

UN chief warns Syria on chemical weapons Posted: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday once again warned Syria against using chemical weapons, saying any such attack would bring dire consequences.I once gain emphasize the fundamental responsibility of the Syrian government to ensure the safety and security of any such stockpile, Ban told reporters at a meeting marking the 15th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The use of such weapons would be an outrageous crime with dire consequences, he warned. Chemical weapons simply have no place in the 21st century. The UN chief noted that Syria and seven other nations still had not signed the convention.I have expressed grave concern with statements made by representatives of the Syrian government about the existence of chemical weapons and their possible use, Ban stressed.US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the Syrian regime, seeking to crush an uprising, recently has moved chemical weapons to help keep them safe.Meanwhile, in a speech to the UN General Assembly, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem charged that France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States induce and support terrorism in Syria with money, weapons and foreign fighters. |
Saudis say virus does not pose threat to pilgrims Posted: Saudi Arabias health minister says a new respiratory virus related to SARS that has infected two people does not pose a threat to the more than 1 million Muslims set to embark on the annual Hajj pilgrimage in the kingdom.Abdullah al-Rabeeah said Monday the virus has so far been contained. The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.Global health officials suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals. The World Health Organization issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new virus, which also causes kidney failure. |
State Dept rejects call for UN envoy to resign over Libya Posted: State Department officials Monday rejected calls for US ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to resign, amid charges she misled Americans over the assault on a US mission in Libya.US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton believes that Ambassador Rice has done a superb job... and we completely reject any such calls here in this building, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.A top Republican lawmaker has called for Rices resignation after she dismissed suggestions on US TV talk shows that the September 11 assault on the Benghazi consulate, in which the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed, was a terrorist attack.I think Susan Rice should resign. She is Americas foreign policy spokesman to the world as ambassador to the UN, New York congressman Peter King told National Review Online on Friday. But Nuland insisted that in the early aftermath of the attack -- in which militants now said to be linked to Al-Qaeda, launched sustained, heavy-arms fire on the US compound and a nearby annex -- US officials had prefaced all remarks with a warning that these were preliminary assessments. The secretary was careful to make clear that these were preliminary assessments, that we would have to fully investigate, Nuland told reporters. So thereafter, as you know, the FBI began its investigation, the secretary established the accountability review board, as shes required to do by law. They are now beginning their work. So from where we are sitting here, we want to let those two investigations go forward, teach us what we need to learn and then take any necessary steps going forward.Amid the confused and evolving account put forward by various officials from the US administration since the attack, there are a host of unanswered questions. They include: What was ambassador Chris Stevens doing in Benghazi? Why was he not evacuated to the annex along with most of the other staff? Were the correct security procedures followed? His diary, found later by CNN, suggested that Stevens feared he was on an Al-Qaeda hit list. And news of the diarys discovery prompted even more questions about how a reporter was able wander the ruins of the consulate, which had already been declared an FBI crime scene.Nuland on Monday refused to answer any questions about the current security at the Benghazi consulate, saying the FBI was in charge of the investigation.Im not in a position to confirm at all what the physical situation is in Benghazi, she told reporters.Meanwhile, five out of six US staff working at the embassy in Tripoli who were evacuated at the weekend have now returned to their post, she said. |

After the crash, the other boat continued away, it didnt stop. He denied the vessel was overloaded, saying it was carrying 121 passengers and 3 crew but had capacity for more than 200 passengers.Television channels showed the boat half submerged with the bow pointing straight up. Helicopters circled overhead with searchlights as government vessels surrounded the boat and divers prepared to enter the water. Broadcaster RTHK said 23 people were still missing.Local news reports said the chartered boat was hit by another boat operated by the Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry company on a regularly scheduled service. RTHK said the captain of the other ship, which was slightly damaged but able to return to port, was afraid to stop in case it sank. All of Hong Kongs emergency forces are focused here, said Hong Kongs leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.Wide-ranging rescue work is being carried out on in the sea, land and in the air. Leung said he didnt know what caused the collision but promised a thorough investigation.Survivors said the boat started sinking rapidly after the collision. Celtics hoping European trip rekindles '07-08 win Posted: After bringing in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in the summer of 2007, the Boston Celtics went to Rome for training camp so the new players could get to know each other. They returned from the overseas bonding experience and won the NBA championship. Now, as the team heads back to Europe, the Celtics are hoping to do it again.Whenever you go on a road trip even during the season its never a bad thing, said coach Doc Rivers, who has long felt that the Roman holiday helped the new Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen become better acquainted and jump-start their run to the 2008 NBA title. The craziest thing is their cellphones dont work over there. So they have to talk to each other on the buses. The Celtics practiced at their workout facility on Wednesday before they were scheduled to leave for Istanbul and Milan, where theyll resume training camp and play a pair of exhibition games. More importantly, the team believes, theyll spend countless hours together on planes, in restaurants and just wandering unfamiliar streets. Its about being a unit, said guard Jason Terry, one of a handful of new players on the roster. One thing is to get with my teammates, out of our comfort zone where we depend on each other.Rivers said his only regret about the trip is that he has to interrupt camp for flight, then give the players a day off after just three days of practice. They will play Fenerbahce Ulker on Friday, then travel to Milan and play Emporio Armani on Oct. 7; they return to Boston on Oct. 8 and get another day off before resuming practice on Oct. 11 and playing their first U.S. exhibition game against the New York Knicks in Hartford, Connecticut, two days later.By that time, Garnett said, they should have a better idea of what to expect this season. From a basketball standpoint, he said, were still getting to know each other.Garnett, who has never been to Turkey, said he had talked to some friends who had been to Istanbul and spent a little time on the internet checking out the weather and places to eat. Rivers said he didnt know much about Turkey but he would know plenty after spending 11 hours on the plane on the way over.Hell also learn a lot about the nine players on the 16-man training camp roster who are new to the team.A handful of them are expected to make the final roster, including Terry, who joined the team as the likely replacement for Allen at shooting guard. Draft picks Jared Sullinger, Fab Melo and Kris Joseph will also get their introduction to life in the NBA.It will give them a little taste of what a long road trip is like, Rivers said. |
