US meningitis toll up to 21 as outbreak widens

Posted:

The death toll in the United States from an unprecedented outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to a contaminated drug has climbed to 21 people, health officials said Friday. The number of infections tied to the tainted steroid rose to 271 in 16 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on its website.Officials have said at least 14,000 people in 23 states could be at risk and that it could be weeks or even months before authorities have a final tally of the infections, due to the diseases long incubation period. The southern state of Tennessee remains the hardest hit with 61 cases and eight deaths, followed by Michigan with 53 cases and five fatalities.Other badly hit states include Florida, Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland. The tainted steroid -- typically injected into the spine to treat back pain -- was produced by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts, which has since shut down its operations and recalled all of its products.Early tests had shown fungus in unopened vials of the medication, but it took until Thursday to confirm it was the type which causes the rare form of meningitis: Exserohilum rostratum.Health officials have widened their outreach efforts to include people exposed to other injectable and high-risk NECC products after three patients who had used different drugs produced by the firm also developed meningitis. The outbreak has led to calls for tighter regulation of the loosely controlled pharmaceutical compounding industry.Critics say drug manufacturers have found a way to sidestep costly and strict oversight by classifying themselves as pharmacies, which are given freer rein to mix drug compounds for patients. The rare strain of meningitis, which inflames the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, requires a lengthy hospital stay and intravenous medications. However, it is not contagious in this form.Three of the cases are for joint infections.

Obama says mind-changing Romnet has 'Romnesia'

Posted:

President Barack Obama came up with a biting new term Friday for what he called rival Mitt Romneys flip-flopping on policy positions, calling it Romnesia.Mr. Severely Conservative wants you to think he was severely kidding about everything he said over the last year, the president said at a rally attended by some 9,000 people at a university campus outside Washington. It marked a clear escalation of the tone Obama is employing to attack his rival in the tight race for the White House, with the election just 18 days away. The two men face off Monday in Florida for the last of three debates, this time focusing on foreign policy. The president said the former Massachusetts governor used to claim, for instance, he was the ideal candidate for the conservative movement known as the Tea Party. Now, suddenly, hes saying, what, who, me? the president said, drawing laughs from the crowd.I mean, hes changing up so much and backtracking and sidestepping, weve got to name this condition that hes going through. I think its called Romnesia. Thats what its called. I think thats what hes going through, Obama said. The president then rattled off what he said were a series of Romney policy reversals on issues such as womens rights, tax cuts for the wealthy and the future of the coal industry.Shortly after Obamas speech, the hashtag Romnesia began trending on Twitter.

US condemns car bombing in Beirut

Posted:

The United States condemned Fridays deadly car bombing in Beirut that killed a top security official linked to the anti-Syrian camp in Lebanon and seven others, calling it an act of terror. There is no justification for using assassination as a political tool, National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement, condemning the terrorist attack.Lebanons security and stability are vital both for the Lebanese people and their neighbors, Vietor said, adding that Washington would stand by Beirut as it works to bring those responsible for this barbaric attack to justice.Earlier, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: There is no justification for such violence.Nuland said the United States did not know who the perpetrators were but that all US embassy staff were accounted for and there were no immediate reports of Americans being injured. The rush-hour bombing killed at least eight people -- including the intelligence chief of Lebanons Internal Security Forces, General Wissam al-Hassan -- and wounded 86 more, Lebanese officials said.

UK govt minister quits over clash with police

Posted:

A key member of Prime Minister David Camerons government quit Friday amid a simmering dispute over an incident last month in which he was accused of abusing police officers with foul language and derogatory remarks about working class people.Andrew Mitchell, who was chief whip and attended Cabinet, was accused by police of confronting them angrily after they asked him to get off his bicycle to pass through gates at Downing Street, the famous road where Cameron has his official London residence. In an official record of the confrontation on Sept. 19, a police officer insisted Mitchell had sworn and used the words moron and pleb a pejorative term for the working class. Mitchell acknowledged he had sworn, but bitterly denied using the other words. The pleb remark put new pressure on Camerons government, particularly is it carries out billions of pounds worth of cuts to public services and welfare programs many of which are causing hardship to ordinary Britons.Pleb short for plebeian comes from the Latin plebeius, the mass of ordinary citizens apart from the elite of upper-class patricians.Camerons Conservative Party, which dominates the coalition government, is seen by many as elitist and lacking empathy with the poor. The leader has made huge efforts to overturn that image, but opponents point out that half the members of his Cabinet went to private schools which educate about 7 percent of all Britons, while two-thirds are millionaires.

At least 2 dead in ex-Gaddafi bastion: local sources

Posted:

Libyan fighters linked to the army on Friday pounded the town of Bani Walid, a former bastion of toppled dictator Moamer Gaddafi, killing at least two people, local sources said.We have received two people dead and 16 wounded until now, said Abdullah al-Mansuri, deputy director of Bani Walids hospital. The shelling is ongoing so the number of casualties could grow, he said, adding that those killed were a 13-year-old boy and a man in his fifties. The military commander of the town, Salem al-Waer, gave a higher toll and said shelling had intensified. Five people were killed and more than 40 homes destroyed by rocketfire and mortar rounds, Waer told AFP by telephone.Skirmishes between Bani Walid fighters and Misrata militias were concentrated on the outskirts of the hilltop town, including in the nearby valley of Mardum, the commander said. But we are in control of the town, he added. The spike in violence comes one year after rebels defeated die-hard loyalists of the former regime both in Bani Walid and the desert city of Sirte, hometown of Gaddafi who was captured and killed on October 20, 2011.The crisis in Bani Walid was triggered by the death of Omran Shaaban, a native of rival city Misrata who was credited with catching Gaddafi.Shaaban, 22, was kidnapped in July and held hostage for weeks in the oasis town, where he was allegedly tortured, before the authorities brokered his release. He died last month of gunshot wounds sustained during his ordeal.Libyas national assembly on September 25 gave an order to the interior and defence ministries to find the perpetrators in Bani Walid, authorising the use of force if necessary.Acting on the assemblys order, army troops and several brigades made up of ex-rebels encircled Bani Walid in early October and threatened to purge former regime remnants.Libya Shield officers and former rebels from the city of Misrata said they had received orders to advance into Bani Walid on Wednesday but a military official swiftly denied this.Fighting that day left at least 11 dead, according to sources in both camps.

Rain robs Pietersen of batting practice

Posted:

Recalled England batsman Kevin Pietersen was robbed of much-needed batting practice Friday when a Champions League Twenty20 fixture scheduled for Kingsmead was washed out.Pietersen was part of the Delhi Daredevils team scheduled to play Auckland Aces in the Indian Ocean city, but steady rain over three hours forced the organisers to concede defeat 70 minutes before the cut-off time. The batsman was added to the England squad Thursday for a November tour of India two months after being kicked out of the team for criticising teammates in text messages to South African opponents during a home Test series. His only competitive action since came last Saturday near Pretoria when he scored 14 runs off 18 balls as the Daredevils defeated fellow Indian Premier League outfit Kolkata Knight Riders comfortably in a first round game. The presence of Pietersen is one reason a star-saturated Daredevils squad are among the title favourites and their next fixture is against the Perth Scorchers at Newlands in Cape Town Sunday.Often controversial Pietersen has been moving well below the radar since arriving in South Africa last week with few sightings of the 32-year-old by domestic media. He was spotted in t-shirt and jeans walking alone in an upscale northern Johannesburg shopping mall with no sign of the mobile phone that triggered so much trouble during August.Could this be the same man who has made a career out of riling some of the people all of the time? Was this nondescript really KP, slayer of bowlers, both demon and dull?, asked the Johannesburg Times. It was. The expensive aroma of arrogance, even at 15 metres and after everything the world had done to Pietersen recently, was unmistakable, it added.Pietersen was also seen at a plush nightclub in the same mall with Daredevils teammates, dancing, joking and showing a fondness for champagne.Pietersen was the centre of attention at the packed club and proved he has more to offer than brilliant batting strokes as he hit the dance floor with Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene and Australian David Warner.
