UN envoy presses for Syria cease-fire in Damascus Posted: The international envoy to the Syria conflict pressed his call for a cease-fire with Syrian officials during a visit to Damascus on Saturday while violence continued throughout the country unabated.Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, has appealed for a truce between rebels and President Bashar Assads forces for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26. Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday and was expected to hold talks Assad on Sunday.A Foreign Ministry statement released after Saturdays meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians.Brahimi did not speak to reporters.Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.Clashes flared around the country on Saturday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 40 civilians and rebel fighters killed as well as more than 20 government soldiers.Anti-regime activist say more 33,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March 2011.
Bombs in market, shootings kill 17 in Iraq Posted: Back-to-back bomb blasts in a crowded Baghdad market near a revered Shiite shrine and a string of shootings targeting government officials killed at least 17 people Saturday. The bombings, which happened within about a minute of each other, appeared be aimed at intimidating Iraqs Shiites, who are a frequent target of Sunni insurgents. Police said at least 11 people were killed and 35 were wounded. The blasts struck about 500 meters (yards) from a shrine where two revered imams are buried, damaging nearby shops and buildings, according to police, who confirmed the casualty figures. The attacks came as many shoppers were out buying new clothes in anticipation of the Eid al-Adha holiday, which begins in about a week.It was a busy time for shopping, so there were a lot of people around, said Ahmed Naseer, the owner of a stationary shop nearby. When I came out, I saw burning carts and merchant stalls, and children crying and women screaming out of fear. The whole place was full of panic.Earlier in the day, gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing two policemen and wounding another.Authorities also said gunmen shot dead a police lieutenant colonel who worked with the State Identity Directorate late Friday in the capitals Karradah district.Hospital officials confirmed the deaths in the Baghdad attacks.Near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint and killed three officers, according to two police officials. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.Gunmen also shot and killed a prison official in a drive-by-shooting during the morning rush hour in eastern Baghdad, said Justice Ministry spokesman Haider al-Saadi.Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack predominantly Shiite areas, government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.Saturdays attacks marked Iraqs deadliest day since Sept. 30, when a string of coordinated blasts that hit Shiite neighborhoods and struck at Iraqi security forces left at least 26 dead.
Saudi minister insists regional unrest will not affect Hajj Posted: The annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca will not be affected by events in Syria and elsewhere across the region, Saudi Arabias interior minister said Saturday.I dont expect pilgrims or the pilgrimage to be affected by what is taking place elsewhere, whether Syria or any other place, the minister, Prince Ahmad bin Abdul Aziz, told reporters. When asked if pro-regime Syrians could infiltrate the pilgrims coming into the kingdom, which has repeatedly voiced support for the rebels, and cause trouble, Prince Ahmad said that those coming to hajj are Muslims and Muslims would not hurt one another, especially not during hajj. However, such an act would have very bad effects, he warned, adding that whoever tries to use hajj for political aims will be sent back home. The Saudi ambassador to Lebanon said Wednesday that the kingdom will grant visas to Syrians in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan -- home to thousands of refugees -- wishing to perform the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, set to begin Wednesday. The majority of Syrias population is Sunni, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.Syrian state news agency SANA reported in September that Saudi Arabia has barred Syrians from entering the country for the hajj. The kingdom had however denied the report. On Saturday the interior minister reiterated that the kingdom did not prevent the Syrian government from sending pilgrims and did not deny entry to any Syrian or Muslim pilgrim wanting to perform hajj, except to those who applied late.He also said that the kingdom is not worried that Iranian pilgrims would cause any trouble. We dont expect any unrest to be caused by Iranians. The Iranians have assured us that they are as concerned about the comfort of pilgrims as we are, he said.A Saudi security chief warned earlier this month that the Muslim kingdom will not tolerate any attempt to exploit the hajj pilgrimage to stage political rallies, as Iranians have in the past, provoking deadly clashes with police.Iranians annually stage a repudiation of polytheists rally, a ritual promoted by the late Islamic republics leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to denounce the West and Israel.Saudi security forces have confronted Iranian pilgrims several times in the past for holding anti-US and anti-Israeli protests. In 1987, police efforts to stifle such a demonstration sparked clashes in which 402 people died, including 275 Iranians.Iranian pilgrims have since held their rallies in tents without provoking clashes with security forces in the Sunni-dominated kingdom.More than 1.6 million pilgrims have until now arrived in Mecca to perform hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and should be done by every able Muslim at least once in a life time.
Gunmen kill at least 30 in Nigerian city Posted: Gunmen killed seven people in Nigerias troubled city of Potiskum Saturday, taking the death toll to at least 30 for three days of violence in the northeastern town, police and residents said.In the eastern state of Adamawa, the bodies were found of nine people residents charged were executed by soldiers hunting suspects in a roadside bomb blast four days earlier.Suspected members of the Boko Haram Islamist group shot dead seven people, including a retired customs chief and an ex-police officer early Saturday, police said.I have received reports of the killing of a retired controller of customs and a retired police officer and five members of their family by Boko Haram gunmen in Potiskum this morning, Yobe state police commissioner Patrick Egbuniwe told AFP.Egbuniwe said the gunmen killed the ex-customs officer Ajiya Waziri and his medical doctor son, before the attack on the police officer and four members of his family.Residents said Waziri and his son were abducted from their house and taken to the outskirts of the city where they were shot dead. Their bodies were dumped on the roadside.A domestic staff said around 10 gunmen took away cash and other valuables from the house before setting it ablaze.Their bodies were found with bullet wounds on the outskirts of the city later today, he said.Residents said the gunmen also broke into the house of Haruna Adamu, a retired assistant superintendent of police in Sabon Layi area of the city.It was past midnight when I heard several gunshots followed by screams which woke me up, said Tabiu Hamza, a neighbour of the slain police officer. Some neighbours including myself rushed to the house after the gunmen had left only to find all the five members of the family, including Haruna, his wife and three children dead, he said.Potiskum, the commercial hub of Yobe state, has been hard hit by near daily Islamist attacks in recent weeks.A wave of attacks by suspected Islamists that began on Thursday had already left at least 23 other people dead and several buildings destroyed.
'US officials say Iran has agreed to nuclear talks' Posted: The United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks over Tehrans nuclear programme, The New York Times reported Saturday, citing officials in the administration of President Barack Obama. The agreement is the result of secret talks between the two sides, according to the unnamed administration officials cited by the Times. Iran has insisted that such talks wait until after the US presidential election on November 6.The Iranians want to hold off until they know who the next US president will be, the report said.News of the agreement comes at a key point in the US presidential election campaign, with Obama set to face Republican rival Mitt Romney in Florida on Monday in their last of three debates -- this one focused on foreign policy. The report emphasized that the deal could still fall through. US officials said the negotiations were conducted with people who report to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but it was unclear if he had signed off on the deal.US officials also expressed concern that the Islamic republic could try to use the talks to stave off military action, buying time to complete elements of its nuclear programme at hidden sites.Western powers accuse Tehran of seeking to develop a nuclear bomb, charges which Iranian leaders deny, saying their nuclear energy programme is purely for civilian purposes. The Iranian side also has said it would like the talks to have a broader agenda including Syria and other issues that have bogged down relations between Washington and Tehran, the report said.Weve always seen the nuclear issue as independent, one administration official told the Times on condition of anonymity. Were not going to allow them to draw a linkage.Romney has repeatedly accused Obama of having a weak stance on Iran, and has said he supports the same red line as Israels prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capacity. But earlier this month, he tamped down the rhetoric, saying any US military intervention was a long way off.Obama has consistently drawn the line on not allowing Iran to acquire a nuclear bomb -- a distinct difference from Netanyahus line on achieving weapons capacity.US officials told the Times the White House had launched an internal review with staff at the State Department and the Pentagon to determine the best negotiating stance for Washington to adopt with Iran.Israels ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, told the newspaper that the administration had not yet informed his country of any agreement on talks. We do not think Iran should be rewarded with direct talks, Oren said.Negotiations between global powers and Tehran over its nuclear programme have stalled. One senior US official said a new round of those talks had not taken place due to the prospect of direct US-Iran negotiations.
Top-seeded Del Potro, Zemlja reach final at Vienna Posted: A runner-up last year, Del Potro defeated Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) to reach his fourth final of the year, while Zemlja rallied to stun second-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 and become the first Slovenian player in an ATP Tour final.I am a guy for history, said Zemlja, who also was his countrys first player to qualify for a Grand Slam event at Wimbledon in 2009. This is really something special and it makes me a happy man.The 70th-ranked Zemlja was 0-4 against top-10 players. The Slovenian played 15 sets to get to the final, Del Potro seven. This is an incredible dream, said Zemlja, who defeated third-seeded Tommy Haas in the quarterfinals. I am full of confidence now. I have no tactics yet to play Del Potro. I will have to talk to my coach first. In his 17th career final, Del Potro is looking for his 12th title and third of the season after winning in Marseille and Estoril. He has never played Zemlja before.Del Potro is playing his first tournament since returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him for more than a month.Being in the final means a lot to me after a month without playing, he said. I am getting better match by match. I am improving on my game, on my confidence. I am happy to play my second final in a row here.Del Potro said he was especially satisfied with his serve. He won all 38 service games this event, and in Wednesdays second round, Del Potro and Daniel Brands of Germany hit 30 and 32 aces respectively to set an all-time record for most aces in a best-of-three match. His semifinal consisted mainly of short rallies and featured no breaks of serve. Del Potro converted his fourth match point with his 17th ace, while Zemlja had 16 aces. Its his return that he needs to improve, Del Potro said.Once again, I did not take my break point chances in this match so I will work on that, he said. I miss a lot of break points. Against this kind of player, one break point is like match point or set point.Zemlja was on the brink of defeat against Tipsarevic after losing the opening set and trailing the Serb 3-1 in the second. He broke back and got the match under control.Only in the third set I started thinking about winning, Zemlja said. I got the feeling the match was in my hands but it was hard work and I had to stay focused until the last point.Tipsarevic said he lost the match in the second set as he failed to build on his lead.I was too passive, I was waiting for Zemlja to give me the victory instead of going for it, the ninth-ranked Serb said. I didnt stay focused until the end of the points. In the third set, Tipsarevic got medical treatment for an injury to his right shoulder, which has caused him problems in the past.It was bothering me for almost two years but in the last year and a half I didnt feel it all, Tipsarevic said. I hope its not too serious.
Wozniacki to play Stosur for Kremlin Cup title Posted: Wozniacki advanced to her third final of the season by beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, while Stosur rallied to beat former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.In the mens semifinals, second- seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy advanced to his fourth final this year by beating Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-3, 6-1, while fourth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil overcame veteran Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 for his first indoor final.Stosur has a 3-2 record against Wozniacki, winning their last two matches. In a match of 18 breaks of serve, the third-seeded Wozniacki won five consecutive games to take the first set. The 11th-ranked Dane was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second but was broken. Wozniacki was broken again while serving for the match at 5-3 in the third and finally clinched the semifinal when Arvidsson netted a backhand in the 10th game.I was really fighting out there, Wozniacki said. Its tough on this surface to finish off the point. This surface suits her game much more than mine and she could get lots of balls. Besides, she was playing really good this week. Im just happy to make it to the final.Ivanovic won four consecutive games in the first set but Stosur broke in the eighth game of the second to stay in the match. She made the decisive break in the seventh game of the decider and sealed the victory on her first match point with a backhand down the line.In the first set Ana was playing quite well making good first shots in the rally which forced me to play in defense, Stosur said. But in the second set I started serving a lot better and played much more accurate on return. I improved my movement and started playing more offensively.Ivanovic took a medical timeout at 3-2 down in the third to have her right hip treated and bandaged. She said she first felt pain in her hip at 2-1 in the second set and it got gradually worse and its still sore walking. Its really disappointing but it was quite a good match, Ivanovic said I was still trying to come in. I thought I still had chances in the second set. But she played well and it was a high-quality match. The hard-serving Karlovic, who landed 19 aces for a total of 78 this week, won the first set against Bellucci on a tiebreaker, but the Brazilian broke him in the last games in each of the next two sets to advance to his second final this year. Its always tough to break him, said Bellucci, who won his third career title in Gstaad in July. I had chances in the first set but failed so I kept my focus on the second set and I could break him. It was good I didnt play a tiebreak in the second set.Seppi won his second career title in Belgrade in May.
Chelsea beats Spurs 4-2; United, City also winners Posted: Chelsea maintained its flying start to the Premier League by beating Tottenham 4-2 away to preserve its four-point lead, while Manchester City needed a last-gasp winner to keep the pressure on the European champions on Saturday.Substitute Edin Dzeko scored twice in the last 10 minutes his second coming in injury time to earn City a 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion despite playing with 10 men for more than an hour.Second-place Manchester United remained level on points with City thanks to a 4-2 home win over Stoke, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice as well as an own goal to open his account for the season.Chelsea, though, looks unstoppable at the moment after recovering from going 2-1 down to end Spurs four-match winning run under former manager Andre Villas-Boas.Spain playmaker Juan Mata grabbed two goals and set up another for the unbeaten visitors, who have picked up 22 points from a possible 24 this campaign matching Citys start to its title-winning season last year.Arsenal dropped further off the pace by surprisingly losing 1-0 at Norwich, which picked up its first win of the season, and Raheem Sterling became Liverpools second youngest scorer ever in the Premier League by grabbing a first-half winner in the 1-0 victory over Reading at Anfield. The win was only the hosts third at home in 2012, lifting them up to mid-table.West Ham maintained its impressive start to life back in the top division by thrashing Southampton 4-1, while Swansea beat Wigan 2-1 and Fulham edged past Aston Villa 1-0.The standout match came at White Hart Lane, where Villas-Boas was undone by a player he signed in the summer of 2011 when in charge of Chelsea.Mata engineered a turnaround for the visitors after early second-half goals by William Gallas and Jermain Defoe had canceled out the lead given to Chelsea by Gary Cahills spectacular volley. Cahill was playing in place of John Terry, who began a four-match suspension for racially abusing an opponent last October.Mata equalized in the 66th with a low drive then curled in a fine finish three minutes later to reclaim the lead for Chelsea, who clinched victory through substitute Daniel Sturridge a goal set up by the effervescent Mata.Chelseas seventh win in eight games leaves the team comfortably clear of the Manchester clubs, who achieved wins in contrasting ways on another high-scoring day in the Premier League. While City left it late to remain the only other team after Chelsea yet to be defeated, United relied on its powerful forward line to get past Stoke at Old Trafford.Rooney nodded into his own net in the 11th but the England striker, fresh off scoring three times for England over the past week, scored either side of goals by Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck. Rooneys second was his 200th club goal while Van Persie moved to eight goals for the season in all competitions.Ferguson was later highly critical of defender Rio Ferdinand for failing to wear a T-shirt before the match that promoted the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign. Ferdinand chose not to don the top out of protest at a perceived lack of action by the campaign group in recent high-profile racism cases.James Milner was sent off for City in the 23rd minute for a professional foul on Shane Long, who put West Brom ahead in the 67th minute at the Hawthorns.Dzeko was introduced in the 79th, equalized a minute later by heading home Carlos Tevezs free kick and then steered home the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.Grant Holt snatched Norwichs winner over a lackluster Arsenal, which is now 10 points behind Chelsea.West Ham scored all its goals in the second half against Southampton, with Mark Noble (two), Kevin Nolan and Modibo Maiga on target.Pablo Hernandez and Michu were the scorers for Swansea, ending the teams five-match winless run in the league, while Chris Bairds 84th-minute goal earned Fulham victory against Villa.
Ronaldo's 15th goal helps Madrid labor to win Posted: Cristiano Ronaldos 15th goal of the season helped Real Madrid labor to a 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo in the Spanish league before its midweek Champions League visit to Borussia Dortmund.Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot in the 67th minute at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium after Gonzalo Higuain opened for the hosts in the 11th with a lofted shot from well outside the area that looped over goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez.Madrid struggled to string together its attack inside Celtas area and at times looked like the complacent side that started the league so poorly. On Wednesday, it plays at the German champions in the Champions League.Barcelona can re-establish its eight-point lead over Madrid with a victory at Deportivo La Coruna later Saturday, which would also see it move three points clear of Atletico Madrid atop the standings. Atletico, which has 19 points like Barcelona, is at Real Sociedad on Sunday.Elsewhere, Malaga stayed within touch of the Spanish leaders after Joaquin Sanchez scored in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Real Valladolid as the Costa del Sol club warmed up for its Champions League match against AC Milan with another victory.Valencia, meanwhile, scored twice in the final three minutes to beat 10-man Athletic Bilbao 3-2 ahead of its Champions League trip to Minsk to face BATE Borisov on Tuesday.

Joshua K Pinney attempts identity theft, fails completely Posted: The 30-year-old allegedly walked into a Bank of America in Des Moines, Washington and handed over an Oregon ID, stating that he needed a new debit card. He reportedly said he was on a business trip, and mentioned that he had recently been in an accident.Heres a look at the head-to-toe get-up Pinney was wearing:The branch manager immediately determined the disguise was fake, KOMO News reports, and called police. When authorities arrived, one officer reportedly inspected the Oregon ID, looked up at Pinney, and asked if he was seriously trying to pass as the man in the photograph.According to court documents, Pinney hung his head and said, I know. He allegedly said the ID had been given to him by his brothers friend, who had stolen it from a car. He also allegedly admitted that he had not actually been in an accident, and that his bandages and neck brace were just part of the disguise.Pinney blamed his girlfriend for coming up with the idea, police said. The man was charged with second-degree identity theft and he missed his court date on Thursday.Pinney may be in the running for worst disguise of the century, but hes not the clear winner. In May, a man held up a London liquor store wearing a pair of boxer shorts over his head, but his face was caught on surveillance camera through the leg hole. And in 2009, two would-be robbers tried to disguise themselves using only magic marker scrawled on their faces.
