Polish thieves arrested for stealing van carrying 12 bodies Posted: Polish police said Sunday they had arrested two men involved in stealing vans in Germany, including a vehicle which was carrying 12 bodies bound for a crematorium. The two men, aged 25 and 27, were arrested on Thursday and Friday and are Polish nationals. We are sure that it is them who committed this crime, we have proof, Andrzej Borowiak, a police spokesman in Poznan in western Poland, told AFP.In all, three vehicles were stolen on Monday night at Hoppegarten in eastern Germany. Police later found one van belonging to a building firm.Police were searching Sunday for the other vehicles including the van that was meant to supposed to take the bodies to a crematorium in Meissen in Saxony in eastern Germany. Two other people are also being sought. A reward of 5,000 zlotys (1,300 euros) has been offered for information leading to the arrest.Everything suggests that the vehicles are on Polish soil, Borowiak said.A Protestant pastor in Berlin has called on the thieves to return the bodies. Please, think how you would feel if you could not bury your mother or your father, Markus Droege said in an appeal reported by German newspapers.
Del Potro stays in race to London with Vienna win Posted: Juan Martin del Potro spoiled the day for Slovenian tennis but kept his own hopes of qualifying for the ATP year-end finals alive with 7-5, 6-3 defeat of qualifier Grega Zemlja on Sunday to win the Austrian Open. The Argentinian, who had missed a month of play after Davis Cup due to a right wrist injury, prevented Zamlja from becoming the first Slovenian to win an ATP title.Del Potro stands provisional seventh in the points race for one of three remaining positions in the ATP World Tour Finals starting on November 5 in London. He will continue his quest next week in Basle as second seed behind Roger Federer at the Swiss Indoors.Im looking to keep improving, keep playing at this level and hopefully qualify for London, said the Argentine who stormed back into the game this week in the Austrian capital.Things are looking better for me, I have my chances. But there are two big events next week (500 tournaments Basel and Valencia) coming up.Everyone has a chance to improve his point totals. The South American claimed his title in Vienna on his third try after losing the 2011 final. He was forced to quit before his first match during his debut in 2008 and now stands 8-1 in the Austrian capital.Del Potro, the top seed, spent more than an hour winning the first set against the number 70 playing in the first final of his career and finished the job on his first match point after one hour 41 minutes.Del Potro added Vienna to trophies claimed this season in Marseille and Estoril. He now owns 12 titles from 17 finals.
Berdych beats Tsonga in 3 sets to win in Stockholm Posted: Tomas Berdych won his second ATP title this year by rallying to beat top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the Stockholm Open final on Sunday. The sixth-ranked Czech saved seven of nine breakpoint chances in the hard-fought match to improve to 3-1 against Tsonga and add to his win in February in Montpellier, France. Berdych now has eight career titles. For the first time in his career, the talented Czech has now won more than one title during a season. It feels pretty good ... this season has been really solid, Berdych said.Berdych saved a break point to hold serve for 5-4 in the deciding set. In the following game, Tsonga then saved two match points by hitting an ace and a winner but ultimately lost on a double fault.I just tried to stay positive until the end and tried to take points one by one, the Czech said.Im happy to turn it (the match) around, it makes the win even more special, added the Czech, who is aiming to make it into next months London Finals, after which he will be part of the team to take on Spain in the Davis Cup final. To qualify into London is special, this is the one where you have to play well all year to get into the tournament. Im hoping to make it for the third year in a row.In the first set, thanks to some patient baseline play, Tsonga forced the hard-hitting Berdych into making mistakes and eventually broke the Czech to 3-2 on his fourth break point. With some powerful serving and aggressive play, Tsonga went on to clinch the opening set 6-4.He proceeded to break Berdych in the opening service game of the second set, and then held his serve until 4-3. Berdych gradually found his groove and finally broke back to 4-4, then reeled off the next two games to take the set.In a tight deciding set, both players fought off several break points, with both managing to hold serves until the tenth game, where Tsongas serving finally let him down.I feel bad, said a disappointed Tsonga, the stronger player for a set and a half.I think we played a great match and I had many opportunities. I did some wrong things, but I gave my best tennis and I lost, so I have nothing to regret.
Azarenka, Serena drawn in same Istanbul group Posted: World number one Victoria Azarenka was on Sunday handed a chance to avenge her US Open final defeat to Serena Williams when she was drawn alongside the American at the WTA Championships.Azarenka and Williams will also face Li Na and Angelique Kerber in the round-robin Red Group at the eight-woman, season-ending event which starts on Tuesday. That left Maria Sharapova, another front runner for the title, with a slightly less difficult looking quartet, even though the White Group includes the defending champion, Petra Kvitova, as well as Agnieszka Radwanska and Sara Errani.
Newell play goalless draw against Racing Posted: Racing could have gone top with a win but neither side was able to break the deadlock. That allowed ten-man Velez Sarsfield to close within three points of the league leaders thanks to a 1-0 win at Tigre.Francisco Cerro was sent off after 69 minutes but the visitors shrugged off their numerical disadvantage to score the winner in the closing stages through Alejandro Cabral. That also meant Belgrano Cordoba dropped to fourth in the standings as they lost 1-0 at All Boys, for whom Mauro Matos scored the only goal on 67 minutes. At the bottom of the table, Union Santa Fe remain on three points after 11 games after losing 2-1 at home to San Martin San Juan.Mauro Bogado (39) and Humberto Osorio (45) put San Martin in command and the home side only got on the scoresheet through a 90th-minute own goal from Lucas Landa. The days other game between Godoy Cruz and San Lorenzo finished goalless.
Posted: Tommy Gainey narrowly missed a chance at golfs magic number. He happily settled for a course-record 60 at Sea Island, and his first PGA Tour win Sunday in the McGladrey Classic.Gainey became the fourth player this year to rally from at least seven shots behind in the final round to win on the PGA Tour.He made seven straight 3s on his way to a 29 on the back nine, and then had to wait more than two hours to see if Jim Furyk or anyone else could catch him.No one came particularly close.Tournament host and Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III drove into the water on the 16th and made double bogey. Furyk was one shot behind playing the 18th when he went over the green.
Police: 3 dead, 4 wounded in US spa shooting Posted: Police in Wisconsin searched Sunday for a man suspected of killing three people and wounding four others in a shooting at a spa in suburban Milwaukee.Police identified the suspect as Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said Haughtons car had been found, but he was still at large. The shooting happened about 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot (836-square-meter) building across from a major shopping mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee. An improved explosive device was found at the spa, and a bomb squad was investigating, Tushaus said. Spokesmen for the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said their agencies also had agents participating in the investigation. The mall, a country club adjacent to the spa, a nearby hospital and other buildings were locked down as police searched for Haughton, local media reported.Tushaus described the situation as fluid and ongoing, saying officers were initially focused on reaching and helping the victims.Online court records showed a temporary restraining order was issued against Haughton in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Oct. 8 because of a domestic abuse complaint.Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital the hospital that was locked down said four shooting victims were taken there, none in critical condition. It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee. The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.
Syria's Assad receive peace envoy Brahimi Posted: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received on Sunday peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who is pressing both sides in Syrias conflict for a truce during a Muslim holiday this week, state television said.UN and Arab League envoy Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid Muallem and opposition leaders tolerated by the Assads regime on Saturday to push for the truce over the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, beginning on October 26.The foreign ministry said Muallem discussed with him a halt to the violence... in order to prepare for a global Syrian dialogue, free of any foreign intervention.Such a dialogue is the only way to emerge from the crisis, it said.Their talks were clouded by tensions in neighbouring Lebanon, where opposition leaders and the prime minister linked to the Syrian regime a deadly bombing that killed a top security official. Also, Muallem complained to Brahimi about regional countries Syria accuses of hosting, arming and training rebels, saying their action was undermining the UN-Arab League envoys mission.Syria has repeatedly blamed its neighbour Turkey as well as energy-rich Saudi Arabia and Qatar of supporting the armed insurgency. On the ground at least 108 people were killed in violence in Syria on Saturday, 42 of them civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported, as fighting raged on northern battlefields and around Damascus.
Funeral for slain Lebanon official ends in clashes Posted: Lebanese security forces unleashed a barrage of gunfire and tear gas in central Beirut on Sunday to disperse hundreds of protesters trying to storm the government headquarters after the funeral of a top Lebanese intelligence official killed by a car bomb. The speedy ignition of the protests demonstrated the flammability of the countrys divisive and sectarian politics. The protesters blamed the assassination on the government of neighboring Syria and consider Lebanons current government to be too close to that embattled regime. Many also chanted against Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that dominates the government and serves as the Damascus regimes closest Lebanese ally.As the battle raged, with protesters and security personnel pelting each other with hunks of concrete, metal bars and tear gas canisters, former Prime Minister Fuad Saniora appealed for calm. The use of violence is unacceptable and does not represent the image that we want, Saniora said in a televised address.Even before Fridays bombing, the civil war in Syria had set off violence in Lebanon and deepened tensions between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assads regime. The assassination has laid bare how vulnerable Lebanon is to renewed strife, threatening to shatter a fragile political balance struck after decades of civil strife much of it linked to Syria.Sundays clashes erupted after the funeral for Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed along with his body guard by a Beirut car bomb on Friday. Al-Hassan, 47, was a powerful opponent of Syria in Lebanon. He was buried in Martyrs Square in downtown Beirut near former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, another anti-Syrian politician who was also assassinated, in a truck bomb in 2005.Syria denied any role in Hariris killing, but outrage in Lebanon expressed in massive street protests forced Damascus to withdraw its tens of thousands of troops from the country and end nearly 30 years of military and political domination of its smaller neighbor. The scene at the funeral was faintly reminiscent of the huge, anti-Syria gatherings in the same square in 2005. But the crowd was far smaller than those after Hariris death.

I am sure the day is not far when we have big time cricket in Karachi, Lahore and other cities. |
USA: Seven injured in Wisconsin firing Posted: A least seven people have been injured in a shooting at or near a day spa in the midwestern US state of Wisconsin by an unknown assailant, US media reported Sunday.Police told reporters they were looking for a black male who may be driving a black Mazda as a suspect in the midday shooting in Brookfield, a suburb of Milwaukee. The latest media reports indicated that at least three of the victims were in critical condition, but details were still emerging from the confusion surrounding the shooting.Television footage showed more than a dozen emergency vehicles in the parking lot of a shopping mall across the street, at least part of which has been evacuated. Tactical police teams were also on the scene.A woman ran out of the spa towards the road, screaming and chased by a large black man with a handgun, David Gosh, a local resident, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Gosh, who was returning from duck hunting with his father and a friend, said the police arrived soon after, and the man with the gun ran back towards the building looking for an escape route.Goshs father, John, said he saw two wounded women be taken out of the spa building. One appeared to have been shot in the leg and the other in the back, he told the newspaper.Just down the road, less than a mile away, is the Sheraton Hotel where seven people were killed and four more wounded at a shooting in 2005. The shooter, who opened fire on a Living Church of God service held at the hotel, then committed suicide.
