Kerry, McCain differ on approach towards Pakistan Posted: The Chairman of the US Senates Foreign Relations Committee, John Kerry was responding to Republication presidential candidate, Mitt Romneys remarks on Pakistan and other foreign policy issues in the third and last direct debate in Florida with President Obama (Democrat partys candidate for re-election). Kerry, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said that Romney mentioned things about Pakistan without really having a solution. You cant come into a presidential debate and just stand there and recite facts about a country. “Well, there are Taliban in Pakistan. Oh, they have nuclear weapons. Thats not a policy. Everybody knows that, he opined. The question is what you are going to do about these things? And he had no concrete, fixed, certain, clear policy, Kerry said adding that the independent observers will also agree with his viewpoint. The distinctions here are important in terms of who really knows what they are talking about. I think if you ask people around the world, they will tell you exactly that, he stressed. However, former presidential candidate, John McCain disagreed with Senator Kerry and said that Romneys concerns about Pakistan were based on reality and this should be the basis of the US relations with Pakistan while moving forward after a troubled period during the 18 months or so. We have to stay engaged with Pakistan. But, the fact is that the influence of the ISI continues with the Haqqani network. The fertilizers are still coming into Afghanistan that are killing Americans. We have to have it as the realistic basis (of relations with Pakistan), he observed while talking about the repeated allegations of the US administration against Pakistan. On other foreign policy issues, Senator John Kerry also accused Romney of not have a clear vision. He also called Iran a state sponsor of terror. They are sponsoring terror with Hizbollah. They are sponsoring terror with Hamas. They are sponsoring terror in the Arabian penninsula and in other parts of the world. They threatened to kill even the Saudi amabassador in Washington, Dc at a restaurant. Thats terrorism folks, he said in a firm tone.On Iran, the president could not have been more clear. Iran will not get a nuclear weapon. He (Obama) has made the toughest sanctions in the world come about. The president has worked hard to create a situation where we can have a peaceful diplomatic solution, he said adding that Romney was mentioned one country as a problem whereas the actual problem was terrorism.Iran has the ability to make a choice here to join the community of nations. You heard the president say it clearly tonight. The last choice is going to war. The first choice is to make diplomacy work. Thats what the president is doing with great skill and with great effect, Kerry said while referring to the US economic and diplomatic sanctions on Iran.He considered it encouraging that the Libyan people had stood-up against terrorism after the killing of the US ambassador in BenGhazi. Libyans are free today and their democracy rose up after Chris Stevens was killed. 30,000 Libyans went after the militia. They are proving that the policy is working, he claimed. In Egypt, we obviously have disagreements with the (Muslim) Brotherhood, but the people of Egypt elected the Brotherhood. Thats an election. Thats democracy. And Mitt Romney blames the notion of having a democracy on Barack Obama, when thats the very thing that those people have been striving for, he argued. He also criticized Romneys stance on China. Even the Chamber of Commerce and major businesses in the US have said that if you name China a currency manipulator, you bring the economy of the US down, let alone create a global depression because of the impact. That is not a wise way to move forward. You really have to be a little more thoughtful and a little more judicious, he cautioned. This was a confused candidate tonight. This (Romney) was a man who does not have a clear sense of the world. And what you saw in opposition to that was a president (Obama) and a commander-in-chief, who has the record and this is not the time (to change that), because it is a dangerous world, he said while comparing both candidates.Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are the two most inexperienced candidates to run for president and vice-president in modern history. Never have we had a ticket with so little experience and in both debates it has shown up, he said while adding that the polls were not so significant at the end of the day. Dont get seduced by these polls. Its always a tight race for presidency. Look at Gore, my race, they are always tight, he said.Kerry, who lost 2004 president election to George Bush, blamed Republicans for the economic vows of the country. The country is divided. You cannot be strong in the world, and the Americans know we have to be strong in the world, if our economy is not strong, he said.Tonight, the president so clearly showed that Mitt Romney has a completely flawed, phoney, absolutely fradulent approach to the economy. His numbers dont work. You cannot have a five trillion dollar tax cut. He is not telling the truth to the American people, he alleged.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in Washington, DC |
UN backs Syria envoy's ceasefire bid Posted: The Security Council on Wednesday unanimously endorsed a temporary cease-fire proposed by the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria during this weekends Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, agreeing that it could break the cycle of violence and provide space for a political transition to begin in the war-torn nation. In a press statement approved by all 15 members, the U.N.s most powerful body, which has been deeply divided over Syria, called on all regional and international actors to support a cease-fire in Syria and to use their influence on President Bashar Assads government and opposition fighters to end the violence. The council urged both sides, but especially the Syrian government as the stronger party, to respond positively to the initiative and reiterated its call on Assad to allow immediate, full and unimpeded access of humanitarian personnel to all populations in need of assistance. The members of the council ... underscored the need to launch an inclusive Syrian-led political transition leading to a democratic, plural, political system that realizes the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for democracy, equality and justice, regardless of their affiliation, ethnicities or beliefs, the statement said.Lakhdar Brahimi told the council, in a videoconference from Cairo, that he expected Syria to announce its support for the cease-fire Thursday, and he said unanimous support from the Security Council is indispensable, according to diplomats who attended the closed-door session.Brahimi was positive about the indications from the government, but he anticipated that they would be issuing a statement and obviously he was cautious until that statement has been issued, Britains U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said after the meeting.Brahimi also told the council that he had been in touch with various members of the opposition, including the Free Syrian Army, who said they would be prepared to respond if the government took the first step in initiating a cease fire over the Eid period, Lyall Grant said. The Security Council has been divided over the conflict in Syria with permanent, veto-wielding members Russia and China vetoing three resolutions aimed at pressuring Assads government to halt the 19-month conflict and threatening sanctions. |
Iraq attacks kill 15 in deadliest day this month Posted: Attacks mostly targeting government officials and security forces in central and north Iraq killed 15 people in the run-up to the Muslim Eid holiday on Wednesday, Iraqs deadliest day this month. The shootings and bombings, which also left 13 people wounded, were the latest sign of a relative spike in violence after several weeks of calm earlier this month. In Fallujah, just west of Baghdad, a car bomb near the home of Finance Minister Rafa al-Essawis father killed four people -- two policemen and two civilians -- according to Lieutenant Colonel Yassin Dawish from the provincial security command centre. The ministers father escaped unscathed, but four others were wounded, including three policemen, doctor Assim al-Hamdani from the citys hospital said. The police casualties were all the guards of the house.Wednesdays deadliest attack, meanwhile, saw six employees of a government-run vehicle spare parts factory shot dead by gunmen using light weapons as the workers were returning to their homes, a police captain and an interior ministry official said. The attack occurred at around 4:00 pm (1300 GMT) in the town of Mishahada, which lies 30 kilometres (18 miles) north of Baghdad, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. In west Baghdad, meanwhile, gunmen opened fire on an army checkpoint in the upscale residential neighbourhood of Mansur, and then detonated a bomb when police arrived at the scene, an interior ministry official said.At least one soldier was killed in the first attack, and three police were wounded in the subsequent bombing, the official and a medic said.Three separate attacks in north Iraq, meanwhile, left two dead -- a policeman and a young child. In the disputed oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb apparently targeting the convoy of a provincial councillor killed a child and wounded two other people, a security official and a doctor at the local hospital said.Four policemen were wounded by a bomb attached to a motorcycle in Kirkuk city, according to security and medical officials. And in the village of Ko Sulaiman, a roadside bomb against a police patrol killed a policeman, the officials said. Two civilians were also killed when gunmen opened fire on them while they were driving in the town of Kazaniyah, in restive Diyala province north of Baghdad, local security and medical officials said.Wednesdays death toll was the highest in Iraq since September 30, when 33 people were killed in nationwide violence. The latest attacks come ahead of Fridays Eid al-Adha holiday. The days leading up to the annual holiday are often marked by a spike in unrest in Iraq. |
Largest US-Israel military drill under way Posted: The US and Israel simulated rocket attacks during their largest-ever joint military drill Wednesday, just as real ones fired from Gaza exploded in southern Israel.U.S. military officials insisted the joint exercise, called Austere Challenge 2012, was planned long before the latest flare-up between Israel and Hamas-ruled Gaza and a long-running debate over how to deal with Iran, unrelated to specific threats facing Israel. It comes at a time when Israel and the U.S. have openly debated the merits of a strike on Irans nuclear facilities, and as US support for Israel has emerged as a central issue in the upcoming American presidential elections. In this weeks presidential debate, President Barack Obama cited the joint drill, calling it testament to the strong military cooperation between the two countries. Presidential contender Mitt Romney has claimed that the Obama administration has undermined Israel as it faces threats from Iran and Arab countries.About 1,000 troops brought in from the U.S. troops are in Israel alongside a similar number of Israeli troops. An additional 2,500 U.S. troops based in Europe and the Mediterranean are participating in the drill. The armies say they are practicing their ability to work together to thwart a variety of threats that face Israel. The exercise will continue for about three weeks.Make no mistake. The U.S. is 100 percent committed to the security of Israel. That commitment drives this exercise, said U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin in a news conference at a training site near a beach in the Tel Aviv area.Reporters were invited to view a large parking lot near the beach where large camouflage-colored trucks and a Patriot air defense battery launcher were deployed for Wednesdays exercise simulating incoming rockets. In that simulation, Israeli commanders and their American counterparts identified an incoming rocket or enemy aircraft, then American troops pushed the button to activate the anti-missile launcher. Not far away, Israeli soldiers were operating similar batteries for real, as Gaza militants fired dozens of rockets at southern Israel. The locally made Iron Dome system knocked down eight rockets from Gaza, Israeli officials said Wednesday. |

Paire beat fifth-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 earlier Wednesday. In other first-round action, second-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina eased past Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-4, 6-1, and Marinko Matosevic of Australia upset seventh-seeded Florian Mayer of Germany 6-2, 6-3. |
Serena beats Li Na at WTA Championships Posted: Serena Williams proved Wednesday at the WTA Championships that even when her serve is malfunctioning, she can still beat a top player.Williams beat 2011 French Open champion Li Na of China 7-6 (1), 6-3 for her second win in round-robin matches to close in on the semifinals at the tournament for the top eight players in the world. In another Red Group encounter, top-ranked Victoria Azarenka saved two match points before rallying past Angelique Kleber of Germany 6-7 (11), 7-6 (2), 6-4 in her first match at the event.Williams had six double-faults and won only 51 percent of points on her first serve. But Li also struggled on serve there were eight breaks in the first set and three more in the second. The first set was full of missed opportunities. The eighth-ranked Li took a 4-1 lead before Williams won the next four games. Serving for the set, the American again dropped serve. Li was unable to hold, though, and Williams had another chance to serve out the set only to lose it at love.Williams took control of the match in the second set by saving a breakpoint in a game that lasted nine minutes to hold and lead 4-1.The American wasted two match points to break Li, but closed it out on her own serve when the Chinese player sent a forehand long. Both Azarenka and Kleber smashed rackets in the second, highly entertaining match.Kleber is making her debut in the event after winning two titles and climbing to No. 5 this year after finishing 2011 at No. 32. She was down a break in the second set, but led 5-4 after prevailing in a game that went to nine deuces and lasted 13 1/2 minutes.Azarenka then saved two match points before capturing the second tiebreaker. The Belarusian closed it out on Kerbers serve, hitting a forehand winner on her first match point.Azarenka needs one more round-robin win to secure the No. 1 ranking for the year.Earlier, defending champion Petra Kvitova withdrew from the tournament because of a viral illness and was replaced by Samantha Stosur. The event splits players into two groups, with the top two in each advancing. |
Schalke beat Arsenal 2-0 in Champions League Posted: Netherlands internationals Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay scored late goals as Schalke outclassed Arsenal to win 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, lifting the team above the English side to the top of Group B.The German visitors had wasted a string of good openings by the time Huntelaar put them in front with a low drive in the 76th minute, his ninth goal of the season for club and country.Afellay clinched victory for Schalke in the 86th, slotting home from close range after Jefferson Farfan had evaded Arsenals defense again down the right. The loss ended Arsenals perfect start to the competition and leaves manager Arsene Wenger with some worrying problems after being outclassed in every department.Schalke is on seven points one ahead of Arsenal. |
Ajax stuns Manchester City 3-1 in Champions League Posted: Ajax came from behind to stun Manchester City 3-1 after goals from Siem de Jong, Niklas Moisander and Christian Eriksen on Wednesday, leaving the English club last in Group D of the Champions League.Borussia Dortmund leads the group with seven points after beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the other game. Madrid is a point back. Ajax is next with three points, two ahead of Man City.Ajax put the visitors under pressure in the opening minutes, pinning them on their half, but City scored against the run of play from a counterattack in the 22nd minute. James Milner received a long-range pass from Micah Richards and shifted it out to an unmarked Samir Nasri, who slotted home easily. The youthful Ajax team intially appeared demoralized with City staying in control for the rest of the half until De Jong equalized just before halftime. With little space to spare, he slammed the ball past England goalkeeper Joe Hart from a centering pass.City looked sharper after the interval. But Moisander rose perfectly at the near post to meet a corner from Eriksen, nodding the ball inside the far post to give the home side a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute. Its actually what we had agreed beforehand, that we would come out a bit for the corners because theres room there, De Jong said. And those guys (Citys defenders) are just so tall.Eriksen, an attacking midfielder playing out of position up front, evaded several defenders to score when his shot deflected off Gael Clichy and into the net in the 68th.It was a poor shot but fortunately it went in, Eriksen said.City manager Roberto Mancini brought on Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli in search of goals. But despite a frenetic effort, City rarely threatened while its defenders appeared disorganized and fractious.Clichy was instructed to switch sides, and fellow defenders Aleksander Kolarov and Yaya Toure were seen bickering. We wanted to have one player in the hole, Mancini said of his decision to switch to three defenders and an extra attacker. If someone wants to take this an excuse then OK ... I prepared the players badly for this game. This defeat is my fault. Ajax coach Frank de Boer said his team earned the victory, not because of any mistakes by City. They had their chances, too, he said. We were able to play out own game. With our wingbacks we were dominant, and they couldnt find an answer for that. |
Dortmund beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Champions League Posted: Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund held on for a 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid to ensure the Spanish champions miserable record in Germany was extended on Wednesday.Marcel Schmelzers 64th-minute strike proved to be the winner for the Bundesliga champions. Madrids only win was a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen in 2000.Dortmund tops Group D with seven points after three games. Ajax beat Manchester City 3-1 in the other group game. |
Study: Aspirin may help treat some colon cancers Posted: Aspirin, one of the worlds oldest and cheapest drugs, has shown remarkable promise in treating colon cancer in people with mutations in a gene thats thought to play a role in the disease.Among patients with the mutations, those who regularly took aspirin lived longer than those who didnt, a major study found. Five years after their cancers were diagnosed, 97 percent of the aspirin users were still alive versus 74 percent of those not taking the drug.Aspirin seemed to make no difference in patients who did not have the mutations. This sort of study cant prove that aspirin caused the better survival, and doctors say more research must confirm the findings before aspirin can be recommended more widely. The study wasnt designed to test aspirin; people were taking it on their own for various reasons.Still, the results suggest that this simple medicine might be the cheapest gene-targeting therapy ever found for cancer. About one-sixth of all colon cancer patients have the mutated gene and might be helped by aspirin. And aspirin costs just pennies a day.Its exciting to think that something thats already in the medicine cabinet may really have an important effect beyond relieving pain and helping to prevent heart attacks, said Dr. Andrew Chan of Massachusetts General Hospital. He and others from Harvard Medical School led the study, which appears in Thursdays New England Journal of Medicine.Cancers of the colon or rectum are a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. More than 140,000 new cases and 51,000 deaths from them are expected this year in the United States.Several studies suggest that aspirin may help fight cancer, especially colorectal tumors. It is often recommended for people who have colon cancer and others at high risk of developing it. But its not advised for wider use, or for cancer prevention, because it can cause serious bleeding in the stomach and gut. What has been lacking, doctors say, is a good way to tell which people might benefit the most, so aspirins risks would be justified. Chans study suggests a way to do that.It involved 964 people diagnosed with various stages of colon cancer who were among nearly 175,000 participants in two health studies based at Harvard that began in the 1980s. Every two years, they filled out surveys on their health habits, including aspirin use. Most had surgery for their cancer, and many also had chemotherapy. They gave tumor tissue samples that could be tested for gene activity. Researchers focused on one gene, PIK3CA, that is involved in a key pathway that fuels cancers growth and spread. Aspirin seems to blunt that pathway, so the scientists looked at its use in relation to the gene.In those whose tumors had a mutation in that gene, regular aspirin use cut the risk of dying of colon cancer by 82 percent and of dying of any cause by 46 percent during the study period of about 13 years.Only two of the 62 regular aspirin users whose tumors had the mutated gene died within five years of their cancer diagnosis versus 23 of 90 non-aspirin users with such a mutation. The results are quite exciting, said Dr. Boris Pasche, a cancer specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who wrote an editorial that appears with the study in the medical journal. Half a dozen drugs are used to treat colon cancer, but only one meaningfully extends survival in people whose cancers have not widely spread, he said. Now we may have aspirin. Thats why its a big deal, Pasche said.In the study, the dose of aspirin baby or regular didnt seem to matter, just whether any aspirin was regularly used. The test for the gene is not expensive and is simple enough that most cancer centers should be able to do it, Chan and Pasche said. The National Institutes of Health and several foundations paid for the study. One of the 17 authors consults for Bayer, a leading aspirin maker. Pasche has been a paid speaker for two companies that make cancer treatments and has two patent applications under review related to cancer treatment.Researchers warn that aspirin may not be responsible for the improved survival seen in this study. Differences in how the patients cancer was treated could have played a role. For that reason, they say the next step should be a study where some people with the mutated gene are given aspirin and others are not, so their cancer outcomes can be compared more directly. |
Report: Bangladesh to tour Pakistan in December Posted: The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly agreed to send its cricket team to Pakistan for three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s in December.Bangladesh was scheduled to tour Pakistan in April for a short series, but it was cancelled after its high court ordered the visit be suspended due to security concerns. No Test team has toured Pakistan for 3 1/2 years since gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team convoy in Lahore in 2009.Last weekend an International World XI comprising of retired players from West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka played two exhibition Twenty20s in Karachi. |
Pybus quits as Bangladesh coach Posted: Englishman Richard Pybus has quit as coach of Bangladeshs cricket team over contract differences just five months into the job, officials said Wednesday.Pybus, 48, told the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) of his decision on Tuesday night, just weeks before the team take on the West Indies in a home series starting in November. We have already appointed Shane Jurgensen, the national teams bowling coach, as the interim coach for the team, BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP.Pybus, who had two spells with Pakistan, could not be contacted for comment. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, he said the BCB wanted him to spend 320 days a year with the Bangladesh team, a commitment he was not ready to make because of family reasons.Yunus said differences over some terms in the agreement meant Pybus had coached the team since June without signing a formal contract.Pybus turned to coaching in his mid-twenties after injury halted his playing ambitions. He coached in South Africa before taking over the Pakistan team between 1999 and 2001 and in 2003.Australian Jurgensen now has a difficult task to prepare the side less than three weeks before the first Test against the West Indies on November 13. |
Oil drops for 4th day on big rise in US supplies Posted: Oil supplies grew last week by 5.9 million barrels, or 1.6 percent, the Energy Department said. At 375.1 million barrels, the U.S. oil inventory is 11.1 percent above year-ago levels. Analysts expected a much smaller increase.Benchmark oil fell 94 cents, or about 1 percent, to finish at $85.73 per barrel in New York. The price has dropped almost 7 percent since closing Thursday at $92.10.Brent crude fell 40 cents to end at $107.85 per barrel in London.Jim Ritterbusch of Ritterbusch and Associates said the oil market may be looking forward to Fridays initial estimate of U.S. third-quarter gross domestic product. Any additional indications of weakening in the worlds largest economy could force further liquidation out of the oil space, he said. |
Euro-dollar rate flat after Fed meeting Posted: Another fall in European private sector business activity sent the euro tumbling early Wednesday but it rebounded after the US Federal Reserve said its easy money stance would remain in place. The euro fell as low as $1.2921 before recovering to $1.2972 at 2100 GMT, barely changed from late Tuesday. The dollar slipped to 79.79 yen from 79.84, while the euro fell to 103.49 yen from 103.64.The fall in the Markit research firms Composite Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), a survey of 5,000 eurozone businesses, sent the euro sharply lower early in the day.The eurozone PMI fell to a 40 month low of 45.8 points in October from 46.1 in September, signalling that businesses were contracting at a faster pace than in recent months. That bearish signal for the euro was offset by the Feds policy statement at the end of a two-day meeting. The US central bank gave only minimal acknowledgment of any improvements in the economy and stressed that it remains vulnerable with slowing business investment and high unemployment. The Fed kept its benchmark interest rate locked at 0 to 0.25 percent as expected, and reiterated it expected to keep the rate at a very low level at least through mid-2015.It said its QE3 and Operation Twist bond purchases, worth $85 billion a month, would stay in place and that it would maintain its broad policy to hold down interest rates for a considerable time after the economic recovery strengthens. The dollar rose to 0.9336 Swiss francs from 0.9327 francs; the British pound gained to $1.6041 from $1.5948. |
