Mush gave undue favour to US oil company Posted: According to documents received by Dunya News, Petroleum and Natural Resources Ministry signed a contract with a US oil company, Halliburton, owned by former US President George W Bush and ex-Vice President Dick Cheney on November 8, 2001 during Pervez Musharraf tenure to explore oil and collect data of production. However, Halliburton transferred the responsibility for the work to its partner company LMKR. Under the law the contract could only be extended twice for a period of one year but on September 26, 2006 the contract was extended for two years in violation of law.In September 2008, the contract of the same company was extended for one year. In 2009, once again the same company was given Rs 260 contract. It is pertinent to mention here that the profit from this project was not handed over to Pakistan due to which national exchequer suffered a loss of millions. It is further revealed that in 2010-11 a sum of Rs 50 million were allocated for project, however in January 2012, LMKR director general was informed through a letter that Rs 65 million have been spent on the project. However, according to documents the DGPC has not taken any action regarding poor performance of the company. |
Obama votes early in US presidential poll Posted: US President Barack Obama joined thousands of fellow American voters in casting an early ballot on Thursday, stopping in at a polling center in his hometown of Chicago.Several American states allow voting before election day and polling data suggests the Democratic incumbent has built a lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney among early voters in the run-up to November 6.It means you dont have to figure out whether you need to take time off work, figure out how to pick up the kids and still cast your ballot, Obama told a small crowd of poll workers and observers, in televised footage. If something happens on election day, you will have already taken care of it. If its bad weather, you wont get wet. Or in Chicago, snowy. But this was really convenient, he said, joking: I cant tell you who I voted for.Obama seemed cheerful and relaxed, despite being mid-way through a two-day, six-state, non-stop tour of battleground polling areas. He posed for pictures with fellow Chicagoans and greeted local reporters. |

56 dead in new ethnic violence in Myanmar Posted: At least 56 people were killed and nearly 2,000 homes destroyed in the latest outbreak of ethnic violence in western Myanmar, a government official said Thursday. The 25 men and 31 women were reported dead in four Rakhine state townships in violence between the Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya communities that re-erupted Sunday, local government spokesman Win Myaing said.He said some 1,900 homes had been burned down in fresh conflict, while 60 men and four women were injured. It was unclear how many of the victims were Rohingya people and how many were Rakhine. In June, ethnic violence in the state left at least 90 people dead and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. Tens of thousands of people remain in refugee camps. An Associated Press photographer who traveled to Kyauktaw, one of the affected townships 45 kilometers (75 miles) north of the Rakhine capital of Sittwe, said he saw 11 wounded people brought by ambulance to the local 25-bed hospital, most with gunshot wounds. One was declared dead after arrival. All the victims being treated were Rakhine, but that could reflect an inability or unwillingness of Rohingya victims to be treated there.A male volunteer at the hospital, Min Oo, said by telephone that five bodies, including one of a woman, had also been brought there. He said the injured persons were brought by boat from Kyauktaw town 16 kilometers (10 miles) away, and taken from the jetty by the ambulances. An account by a Rakhine villager in the area suggested great confusion and tension. The villager said that when groups of Rakhine and the Rohingya had a confrontation, government soldiers shot into a crowd of Rakhine, even though, according to his claim, it had been dispersing. The villager would not give his name for fear of violent reprisals. There have been concerns in the past that soldiers were failing to protect the Rohingya community, but the Rakhine villagers account hints that the military may have been defending the Rohingya in this case.Curfews have been in place in some areas since June, and been extended to others due to the recent violence.Tensions still simmer in part because the government has failed to find any long-term solution to the crisis other than segregating the two communities in some areas. The United Nations called for calm Thursday in response to the new violence. The U.N. is gravely concerned about reports of a resurgence of inter-communal conflict in several areas in Rakhine State which has resulted in deaths and has forced thousands of people, including women and children, to flee their homes, U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar Ashok Nigam said in a statement. |
Syria army, rebels say to cease fire on Friday Posted: Syrias army and main rebel force said they will cease fire on Friday, in line with an internationally backed truce during a Muslim holiday, but both reserved the right to respond to any aggression.A peace initiative by UN and Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi calls for a truce during the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha from Friday marking the end of the hajj pilgrimage. It was backed this week by the United Nations Security Council, and a spokesman for UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the world is now watching to ensure both sides stick by their commitment. The United States expressed the hope the ceasefire will be respected. What we are hoping and expecting is that they will not just talk the talk of ceasefire, but that they will walk the walk, beginning with the regime, US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. The army announced it would adhere to the ceasefire in a statement read on television. On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, military operations will cease on Syrian territory as of Friday morning, until Monday the 29th, it said. But it also said the army would react if armed terrorist groups continue to fire on civilians and government troops, attack public and private property and use car bombs and improvised explosive devices. It also warned of a response if rebels reinforce their current positions or receive ammunition, and to any fighters crossing from neighbouring countries. The Free Syrian Army, chief among many rebel groups battling President Bashar al-Assads forces, responded positively soon afterwards, saying it too would lay down its weapons as long as regime troops adhere to the ceasefire. We will respect the ceasefire from tomorrow morning if the Syrian army does the same, said General Mustafa al-Sheikh of the FSA, which had previously said it doubts Damascus would stand by any commitment. But if they fire a single shot, we will respond with 100. So we reserve the right to respond, he said by telephone from Turkey. He cautioned, however, that he could not speak on behalf of all rebels. There is not a unified command for all the factions. We speak on behalf of a big enough number of fighters, but there are other armed factions who follow other commands, Sheikh said.An April ceasefire announced by Brahimis predecessor, former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, failed to take hold.If the latest does hold, it would be the first real breakthrough in halting -- even temporarily -- the 19-month conflict that rights groups say has killed more than 35,000 people.Eid al-Adha starts with prayers at dawn on Friday, expected at around 5:30 am local time in Syria, or 0230 GMT. |
US replaces body scanners at some airports Posted: The US federal government is quietly removing full-body X-ray scanners from seven major airports and replacing them with a different type of machine that produces a cartoon-like outline instead of the naked images that have been compared to a virtual strip search. The Transportation Security Administration says it is making the switch in technology to speed up lines at crowded airports, not to ease passenger privacy concerns. But civil liberties groups hope the change signals that the equipment will eventually go to the scrap heap.Hopefully this represents the beginning of a phase-out of the X-ray-type scanners, which are more privacy intrusive and continue to be surrounded by health questions, said Jay Stanley, a privacy expert at the American Civil Liberties Union. The machines will not be retired. They are being moved to smaller airports while Congress presses the TSA to put in place stronger privacy safeguards on all of its imaging equipment. In the two years since they first appeared at the nations busiest airports, the backscatter model of scanner has been the focus of protests and lawsuits because it uses X-rays to peer beneath travelers clothing. The machines are being pulled out of New Yorks LaGuardia and Kennedy airports, Chicagos OHare, Los Angeles International and Boston Logan, as well as airports in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Orlando, Florida. The TSA would not comment on whether it planned to remove machines from any other locations. Some of the backscatter scanners have gone to airports in Mesa, Arizona, Key West, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The TSA is still deciding where to send others. The switch is being made as the TSA is under pressure from Congress. Legislation approved in February gave the agency until June to get rid of the X-ray scanners or upgrade them with software that produces only a generic outline of the human form, not a blurry naked image. The agency, however, has the authority to grant itself extensions, and the current deadline is now May 31, 2013.So far, only the other type of scanner that TSA uses has been upgraded. Called millimeter-wave scanners, they resemble a large glass phone booth and use radio frequencies instead of X-rays to detect objects concealed beneath clothing. The scan is processed by software instead of an airport security worker. If the software identifies a potential threat, a mannequin-like image is presented to the operator showing yellow boxes over areas requiring further inspection, by a pat-down for example.Besides eliminating privacy concerns, the machine requires fewer people to operate, takes up less space in crowded security zones and completes a scan in less than two seconds, allowing screening lines to move faster. |
Oil prices rise after positive US economic data Posted: Oil prices rose slightly Thursday, buoyed by better-than-expected data in the United States that offset worries about demand in the worlds biggest crude-consuming nation.New Yorks main contract, light sweet crude for December, added 32 cents from Wednesdays close to settle at $86.05 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in December gained 64 cents, closing at $108.49 a barrel in London trade.Gains were capped by the stronger dollar, which rose in value amid upbeat data on US manufacturing and the jobs market. The stronger greenback makes dollar-priced oil more expensive for buyers using weaker currencies. From the US we saw better-than-expected readings for initial jobless claims and durable goods orders, while pending home sales bucked the trend of strong housing market indicators recently, said analyst Fawad Razaqzada at trading group GFT Markets. The net effect of todays US economic data was mildly dollar-positive which weighed slightly on all buck-denominated assets by late afternoon. In morning trade, crude oil futures had rallied strongly on bargain hunting a day after crude had struck multi-month low points on demand concerns after the US government reported ballooning supplies and poor European economic data.On Wednesday, the New York price fell to $84.94, its lowest point since mid-July.It was risk-on trade this morning as equities, oil and commodities all rallied, Razaqzada said.Sentiment was lifted in part by a surprisingly good UK GDP number and media reports that the Spanish government would formally ask the EU for a bailout package of about 60 million euros to recapitalize its banks.Additional support was provided by concerns about a reduction in Nigerian output due to severe flooding and oil theft, he added.Andy Lipow at Lipow Oil Associates noted there was a significant amount of crude supply around the world. The only thing that has been supporting crude oil prices is concerns with Iran, he said.Iran was recently threatening to remove its oil from the world market, which would tend to support prices. |

Posted: Serena Williams clinched her third win at the WTA Championships on Thursday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Victoria Azarenka that prevented the Belarusian from guaranteeing the end-of-year number one spot.World number three Williams, who had defeated Azarenka in the US Open final last month, had already made sure of her place in the semi-finals after beating Li Na and Angelique Kerber. On Thursday, she hit 35 winners and 11 aces.Azarenka must beat Li Na on Friday to make sure of her place in the semi-finals of the season-ending event.Meanwhile, Li Na kept alive her hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Championships with a resilient and polished performance in a straight sets win over Angelique Kerber. The former French Open champion from Chinas 6-4, 6-3 win over the hard-working German may have also had something to do with the energy Kerber expended while earning match points in a massive three-hour effort against world number one Victoria Azarenka the night before. |
Injured Nadal out of Paris, London Posted: Rafael Nadal, out of action since June, will miss the ATP Tour Finals in London and also next weeks Paris Masters owing to his injured left knee, virtually condemning him also to miss the Davis Cup final as a result.Nadal had hoped to make London and potentially the Davis Cup final, which starts on November 16, but the world number four had been fighting a losing fitness battle. Its disappointing for me to miss the last two tournaments of the season in Paris and London, but it doesnt come as a surprise, said French Open winner Nadal.I will hopefully resume my tennis practice soon since I am making good progress with my recovery from injury. I am not ready to compete in time for these events so I will continue my recovery in Mallorca and work hard to be back as soon as possible. The former world number one has not played a competitive match since his shock loss to unseeded Czech Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon on June 28.The 26-year-old Mallorcan has been suffering with Hoffa syndrome, an inflammation of the fatty tissue situated behind the kneecap in his left knee.He declared in late September that he would not return to the circuit until he was 100 percent fit.Nadal missed the Olympics and the US Open, but had hoped he might make London from November 5-12 and the Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic in Prague on the following weekend. Both events will take place on hard courts, which are more likely to aggravate existing injuries than Nadals preferred surface, clay.Brad Drewett, ATP president, said: We wish Rafa all the best as he continues his rehabilitation from injury. Rafa is an incredible champion and it goes without saying that he has been missed on the ATP World Tour over the past few months. We look forward to welcoming him back on the tour very soon. |

Malik applies to be Pakistan batting coach Posted: Former Pakistan captain Salim Malik, who overturned a life ban from cricket, applied for the job of national team batting coach on Thursday. In 2008, a court in Lahore lifted a life ban on Malik which was imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board for match-fixing. A PCB board of inquiry in 2000 implicated him in corrupting international matches.I do really feel that Pakistan needs a batting coach and I want to offer my services, Malik said in Lahore soon after applying for the job at the PCB headquarters.Pakistan batsmen have been struggling both against spinners and fast bowlers and they need a good adviser. The 49-year-old Malik wasnt concerned that he doesnt fulfill at least two of the job requirements. He doesnt have at least five years of working experience in a similar role with elite cricketers, nor has he done a level three coaching accreditation or international equivalent.I dont think it should be a problem, Malik said. You dont have to teach players of the national team from scratch, you just need to fine tune them.Malik caused another controversy after his ban was lifted four years ago when he claimed the PCB offered him a job as head coach at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. However, the PCB denied Maliks claims at the time.He played 103 tests from 1982-99 and scored 5,768 runs. He also played 283 one-day internationals and made 7,170 runs.As captain, he won seven of 12 tests. Only Waqar Younis, who won 10 of 17, has a better winning percentage for Pakistan.PCB has set Nov. 5 as the deadline for applicants for batting coach. |
Pietersen 50 cannot save Daredevils from defeat Posted: Recalled England batsman Kevin Pietersen finally clicked at the Champions League Twenty20 tournament Thursday, but could not prevent Delhi Daredevils making a semi-finals exit.Pietersen struck 50 runs off 44 balls against the South African Highveld Lions at a cold and windy Kingsmead in this Indian Ocean port after meagre contributions of 14 and nine in previous innings at the rain-hit event.Lions made 139-5 after being put in to bat and Delhi responded with 117-9 after a seven-runs-an-over chase fell behind the target after just six overs and never caught up.While Pietersen remained at the crease there was an increasingly slim hope, and that disappeared after 16.1 overs when he top edged a ball to short fine leg and wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile scampered to take the catch.Pietersen struck three fours and one six and now turns his attention to a tour of India by England, ending a two-month exile after he criticised his teammates in text messages to South African opponents during a Test series.Apologies to all the @DelhiDaredevils fans We should have done better today On a more positive note- Ill be in India Sunday.. Cant wait tweeted Pietersen after the match.Delhi sprang a selection surprise by omitting Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene and introducing Australian David Warner, who was the second highest scorer with 21 while South African tail-ender Morne Morkel made 18 not out.Chris Morris (2-7), Aaron Phangiso (2-18) and Australian Dirk Nannes (2-34) were the pick of the bowlers for the Lions, who will have home ground advantage Sunday in the final against the Sydney Sixers or the Centurion-based Titans.Opener Gulam Bodi (50), man-of-the-match Neil McKenzie (46 not out) and skipper Alviro Petersen (24) did best among the Lions batsmen while Umesh Yadav (2-20) offered most in the Delhi attack.Daredevils were the only Indian Premier League franchise to qualify for the semi-finals from the 10-team mini-league phase with defending champions Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders flopping. |
