US judge orders Abu Hamza remain in detention Posted: A US judge ordered that radical Islamist preacher Abu Hamza, described by the US government as an Al-Qaeda mastermind, be kept in detention after a brief court hearing Saturday.Hamza and four other terror suspects who were extradited overnight from Britain appeared in US court in the latest stage of a trans-Atlantic legal saga. The one-eyed extremist, whose trademark hook on the stump of his right arm and other prosthetic limbs were removed, did not speak at his hearing in New York, except for a few words muttered to his court-appointed lawyer. Hamza, 54, faces terror charges over a 1998 kidnapping in Yemen, setting up a terrorist training camp in the United States and for facilitating violent jihad in Afghanistan. He will be formally charged on Tuesday.Wearing a navy blue prisoners outfit, Hamza kept his head bowed during the hearing before US Magistrate Judge Frank Maas, who summarized the charges before him.Sabrina Shroff, a lawyer for the self-avowed cleric, requested he be given special shoes, without which he will not be able to function in a civilized way due to foot trouble, and requested medical care on account of his diabetes. In the same New York court, Adel Abdul Bary, a 52 year-old Egyptian, pleaded not guilty and Khaled Al-Fawwaz of Saudi Arabia, 50, refused to enter a plea. His lawyer cited procedural issues.Bary and Fawwaz are charged with conspiring with members of Al Qaeda to kill US nationals and attack US interests abroad.Bary is also charged with murder, conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction and other offenses in connection with the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Those blasts destroyed the buildings, killing 224 people and injuring thousands more. Two others, British citizens Babar Ahmad and Syed Talha Ahsan, pleaded not guilty before a judge in New Haven, Connecticut. They were ordered held in custody. Another hearing is set for October 15.Ahmad, 38, and Ahsan, 33, are charged with terror-related offenses stemming from their involvement in Azzam Publications in London, which allegedly provided material support to militant Chechen separatists, the Taliban and associated terrorist groups. They were arrested in 2004 and 2006, respectively.US officials hailed the extradition of Hamza and the other terror suspects as a watershed moment in Washingtons battle against Al-Qaeda.These are men who were at the nerve centers of Al-Qaedas acts of terror, and they caused blood to be shed, lives to be lost and families to be shattered, US Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.
50 dead as Syria rebels take border town Posted: Nearly 50 soldiers and rebels were killed on Saturday in clashes near Syrias northern border, as Turkey hit back against what it said was new mortar fire from inside Syria.Damascus, for its part, said four Turks were among a convoy of terrorists killed in the heart of Aleppo, just hours after UN condemnation of deadly jihadist bombings in the countrys commercial capital.Forty government soldiers and nine rebels were killed when rebels took a town in the northwestern province of Idlib near the border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The clashes at Khirbat al-Joz... ended when fighters of the rebel brigades took control of the area, said the Britain-based watchdog. The fighting lasted more than 12 hours and resulted in at least 40 dead among the regular forces, including five officers, and nine (rebel) fighters, it added after earlier reporting 25 soldiers and three rebels dead.Turkish officials said they were sure a mortar round that struck on Saturday morning was fired by pro-government forces in Syria, and not rebels who have been fighting for nearly 19 months to oust President Bashar al-Assad.It prompted fresh retaliatory fire after reprisals on Wednesday and Thursday for the previous shelling, the Hatay provincial governors office said.A mortar round struck today (Saturday) at 7:00 am (0400 GMT) about 50 metres (yards) inside Turkish territory in an open space about 700 metres from the village of Guvecci and about 300 metres from a police station. No casualties were reported. The Turkish army responded with four mortar rounds, the governors office said, adding that the Syrian fire had come from loyalists who were firing at rebels near the border. The cross-border exchanges came despite unanimous condemnation from the UN Security Council on Thursday of deadly shelling from the Syrian side further east in Sanliurfa province that killed five people.Following that incident, the Turkish parliament authorised further military action but Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was not seeking a mandate for war.In a new statement on Friday, the Security Council condemned bombings Wednesday claimed by a jihadist group that killed nearly 50 people in Aleppo, expressing condolences to families of the victims of these heinous acts.State television, meanwhile, said four Turks were among foreign fighters the army had killed in the Bustan al-Qasr district of the battleground city of Aleppo.
Panetta: Syria clash with Turkey may escalate Posted: The continued exchange of artillery fire between Syria and Turkey raises additional concerns that the conflict may escalate and spread to neighboring countries, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Saturday.Panetta said the U.S. is using its diplomatic channels to relay worries about the fighting in the hopes that it will not broaden. His comments came on the heels of warnings from Turkeys prime minister that his country is not far from war with Syria.Turkish and Syria traded artillery fire Saturday as rebels clashed with President Bashar Assads forces near the border, heightening the fears that the crisis could erupt into a regional conflict. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday cautioned Damascus not to test Turkeys limits and determination and said Ankara was not bluffing in saying it wont tolerate such acts.In other comments during a press conference with Perus Defense Minister, Pedro Cateriano, Panetta warned that the international community is ready to impose more sanctions against Iran if the country does not begin to address concerns about its nuclear program. The economic sanctions are having a damaging effect on Iran, as inflation and unemployment rise, and the value of the currency drops, increasing prices.Iran, said Panetta, has to engage seriously with the international community to resolve issues with its nuclear program and if it doesnt, make no mistake, the international community will continue to impose additional sanctions.Panettas comments came after meetings Saturday with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, and the countrys defense ministry dubbed the Pentagonito to continue meetings with Cateriano. After his meeting with Humala, Panetta said the U.S. is increasing efforts to build partnerships in the region and said America will do whatever it can to provide assistance to Peru to meet the challenges of terrorism, illicit trafficking and humanitarian needs.Later, he and Cateriano, during a joint press conference, said that they are negotiating an update in the defense cooperation agreement between their two countries.Noting that the last agreement was sealed in 1952, Panetta said the U.S. is committed to improving its ability to conduct joint military exercises, training and education exchanges with Peru.Cateriano said updating the agreement will help his country modernize its military.Panetta also said that the U.S. wants to work with Peru to confront the drug trafficking, calling it one of the most serious threats we face in the hemisphere. He said he listened to the concerns of the Peru officials, and will determine if there is any additional help the U.S. can provide.Panetta is leaving Peru and will fly to Uruguay Saturday afternoon to attend a regional meeting of defense ministers from the Americas.
Algeria's ex-president Bendjedid dies Posted: Algerias former long-time president Chadli Bendjedid, acclaimed for having introduced democracy to government institutions, died of cancer on Saturday aged 83, the APS news agency reported.Eight days of national mourning have been declared.Bendjedid had been admitted to the Ain Naajda military hospital in Algiers more than a week ago. He was hospitalised in Paris last January for cancer treatment and returned to hospital for brief spells in May and October. The former head of state will be buried on Monday in Algiers, at the El-Alia cemetery in Martyrs Square, according to the presidents office.Bendjedid was one of Algerias longest-serving presidents, holding office from 1979 to 1992, when he was forced from power when the army stepped in to stop Islamists from winning the countrys first multi-party legislative elections. The military intervention sparked a civil war which left an estimated 200,000 people dead.Bendjedid joined the underground for the duration of the war of liberation against colonial power France between November 1954 and 1962, when he was named military commander of the Oran region of western Algeria for 14 years. He became a member of the Revolutionary Council, set up in June 1965 after the overthrow of the countrys first president Ahmed Ben Bella. With the armys backing, he was elected president in January 1979 and his mandate was renewed in December 1988, two months after bloody unrest over price rises and demands for democracy.Bendjedid kick-started the democratisation of government institutions in Algeria, notably by promulgating a pluralist constitution in February 1989.But after the outbreak of civil war, he was placed under house arrest in Oran in January 1992 and not released until after Abdelaziz Bouteflika rose to the presidency in 1999.His memoirs are due to be published on November 1, the anniversary of the outbreak in 1954 of Algerias war of independence.Bendjedid was born on April 14, 1929 in Bouteldja, a village in eastern Algeria near the Tunisian border.

Bartoli broke serve on a second opportunity when Azarenka hit a forehand long.Azarenka took advantage of her next match point on Bartolis serve in the eighth game.Sharapova, who will be playing for her fourth title of the year, took 68-minutes to secure the first set. Chelsea is now set to fine Cole after launching disciplinary action over the tweet. On the pitch, as Chelsea fans chanted support for Terry and Cole, the team fell behind when Grant Holt beat goalkeeper Petr Cech after 11 minutes.Fernando Torres ensured the lead only lasted three minutes by heading in the equalizer, before Chelsea steamrollered the winless visitors with Frank Lampard volleying the leaders in front.Juan Mata then ripped through the Norwich defense and slipped the ball through for Hazard to put Chelsea further ahead before halftime, while Branislav Ivanvoic volleyed in a late fourth.Earlier in the day, City was also rampant against Sunderland, but had only three goals to show for the dominance.Aleksandar Kolarov scored from a free kick after five minutes at Etihad Stadium, substitute Sergio Aguero added a second on the hour, and James Milner blasted another dead ball into the net.It was Citys first game this season without conceding a goal.We are disappointed defensively this season but we are happy with the clean sheet, City manager Roberto Mancini said. Goals from James Morrison, Zoltan Gera and Youssouf Mulumbu secured the win that will add to the pressure on QPR manager Mark Hughes with his team bottom despite an offseason spending spree.Reading is out of the drop zone but only a point ahead of QPR after first-half goals by Pavel Pogrebnyak and Noel Hunt were wiped out by Miguel Michu and Wayne Routledge in Swanseas stirring comeback to clinch a point. |

IMF chief predicts sustainable Gulf growth Posted: The head of the International Monetary Fund said Saturday that the economies of the oil-rich countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will continue to enjoy high growth rates, although at reduced rates.Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the IMF, also praised the GCC countries management of oil prices and reserves, and lauded their financial contribution to the transition of Arab countries following the uprisings that have rattled local economies.I would like to stress the important, positive role the GCC countries play in the broader Middle East and North Africa region, and the world at large, Lagarde said after a meeting of the six-nation GCC, which counts Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman as members. The generous financial aid the GCC has provided to some of the Arab countries undergoing transition is helping those countries through a very difficult period, she said. And, at the global level, GCC countries oil policy has helped stabilize oil markets and counter price pressures that could have inflicted serious damage on the world economy. She said that while other Arab economies are challenged, the GCC countries are enjoying growth that reached its highest level in eight years in 2011 at 7.5 percent.Nevertheless, given the uncertain global outlook, continued emphasis on strengthening resilience, including in fiscal and financial sectors, will be important alongside greater focus on the foundations for longer-term growth, she said.An IMF official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the organizations policy, said following the GCCs strong performance in 2011, growth in the nations non-oil sectors is expected to slow as fiscal stimulus eases, but remain high by historical standards at around 6.5 and 5.6 percent in 2012 and 2013, respectively.Saudi Arabia is one of the largest donors to countries of the region and contributors to the IMF.Riyadh pledged an additional $15 billion earlier this year to the IMF following the funds call for new resources, the official said.
