Ronaldo, Messi net 2 as Madrid draws 2-2 at Barca Posted: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dueled each other to an entertaining stalemate on Sunday, with both superstars scoring twice as Barcelona drew 2-2 with Real Madrid to keep an eight-point lead over its archrival intact. The result ended Barcelonas perfect start to the league campaign as it dropped points for the first time in seven games, but provided yet another memorable chapter in the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo, the two biggest names in the sport.Ronaldo put Madrid ahead at Camp Nou stadium in the 23rd from a pass by Karim Benzema to extend his scoring streak in clasico matches to six. Then it was Messis turn, as he took advantage of a defensive slip to level for Barcelona in the 31st, before adding a second goal in the 61st with a perfect free kick from almost 25 yards out.But as Barcelona looked to seal the result, Mesut Oezil unlocked Barcelonas makeshift defensive line to set up Ronaldo to respond five minutes later and split the points. It was, perhaps, a fitting end to the latest head-to-head duel between arguably the two best players in the world, who for the last two seasons have engaged in a two-way scoring race unlike anything the Spanish league has seen before. Messi and Ronaldo are the leading candidates for the world player of the year award, and both showed they more than deserved it with standout performances on Sunday night.Ronaldo added to his pair of hat tricks from the previous week, while Messi recorded his 17th career goal against Madrid, leaving him one short of equaling Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefanos record. The two players lead the Spanish league with eight goals apiece through seven rounds.Atletico Madrid can move even on points with Barcelona if it beats third-place Malaga later.Camp Nou was bedecked with independence flags and the game started with the 90,000-plus fans holding up colored cards to form a mosaic of the red-and-yellow Catalan flag before shouting Independence in unison in the latest manifestations of the surge of separatist sentiment in the northwestern region of Spain. But politics aside, the home fans quickly returned their attention to Barcelonas thinned backline, which was without both center backs Carles Puyol (elbow) and Gerard Pique (foot). To compensate, coach Tito Vilanova, in a minor susprise, left new signing Alex Song on the bench, and aligned Adriano alongside Javier Mascherano in the center of his defense. With Xavi Hernandez and Cesc Fabregas in midfield, Barcelona quickly made their intentions known as the pair wove together combinations with Messi up front. But Ronaldo made sure Madrid opened the scoring when he took Benzemas pass and used one sharp touch to drive the ball between the near post and goalkeeper Victor Valdes.Ronaldos goal seemed to stun Barcelona, and Madrid had two golden chances to double its advantage two minutes later when Benzema scuffed a close-range shot, sending it off the bar, and Angel Di Maria punched the rebound wide.Barcelonas injury troubles in defense mounted in the 27th when Dani Alves had to be replaced by Martin Montoya.Just when Barcelona was suffering the most, Messi stepped up to level the score. Madrid defender Pepe failed to clear a high ball from a deflected cross by Pedro Rodriguez, and Messi slipped in to poke the loose ball past goalkeeper Iker Casillas.Messi started the second half with a long gallop from deep in his own half, passing two defenders before sending a cross into the area the defense had to scramble to intercept.Messi then put the hosts in front, winning a free kick before looping it over the wall and beyond Casillas diving grasp.Ronaldo hit right back when Oezil threaded a pass through the defense for the Portugal forward to slot past Valdes. The draw spoiled Vilanovas bid to become the first coach to lead Barcelona to seven wins in as many games to start the season.
Man United beat Newcastle 3-0 in Premier League Posted: Manchester United ruthlessly exploited lackluster defending by Newcastle to win 3-0 away on Sunday and move to a share of second place with rival Manchester City in the Premier League.Jonny Evans powered home a header from Robin van Persies corner in the eighth minute at St. James Park before another corner, from Wayne Rooney, found an unmarked Patrice Evra in the 15th to cap an explosive start by Alex Fergusons side. After weathering some Newcastle pressure, United added a third through Tom Cleverley in the 71st when his long looping shot proved too much for goalkeeper Steve Harper. It was a great result, Ferguson said. To come here and win 3-0 against a very powerful and aggressive Newcastle, you have to really perform.Today we were on top of our game. The concentration was terrific and the determination was there.United and City have 15 points, four behind Chelsea after seven games.A clean sheet was also welcome to United, whose injury-hit defense has been heavily criticized in recent weeks. The two opening goals came from defenders and there were strong performances by central defenders Rio Ferdinand and Evans in particular. Its a great result, Rooney said. Everyone knows this is probably one of the hardest games of the season. We came here, defended brilliantly. We fully deserved the victory. The first six games of the season, we havent defended well enough not just the back four, the whole team, and today we were brilliant against a physical team.Newcastle came closest when Demba Bas header came back off the bar and Papiss Cisses follow-up was clawed away by United goalkeeper David De Gea just before it could cross the line.Probably the turning point was whether the ball went in or not and probably from the replay, it didnt, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.We conceded two from set-plays and you cant give teams like Manchester United a two-goal lead.

Kebede wins Chicago Marathon in course record Posted: Tsegaye Kebede became the first Ethiopian man to win the Chicago Marathon by capturing Sundays 35th edition in a course record, with compatriot Atsede Baysa taking the womens title by a stride.Kebede surged in the final mile to win in 2hr 04min 38sec and defeat countryman Feyisa Lilesa by 14 seconds, with Tilahun Regassa third in 2:05:26 on his marathon debut to complete an Ethiopian mens podium sweep. This is a great day for us, for Ethiopia especially, Kebede said.Kebedes victory snapped a run of consecutive Chicago victories by Kenyan men at nine. The former mens course mark was 2:05:37 last year by Kenyan Moses Mosop. In a womens duel in doubt until the last second, Ethiopias Baysa edged Kenyas Rita Jeptoo, the 2006 Boston Marathon winner, at the finish line.Baysa was given an official time of 2:22:03, a personal best by one second, with Jeptoo second at 2:22:04 and Kenyas Lucy Kabuu third, 38 seconds adrift.I came to win this race, Baysa said. When I came upon the finish line, I knew I won. Each champion received $100,000 for the victory, while Kebede took an extra $50,000 for setting a course record and Baysa won a $10,000 bonus for her time.Liliya Shobukhova failed in her bid for a fourth Chicago Marathon title in a row, the 34-year-old Russian settling for fourth, 56 seconds off the pace.It just gives me some perspective, just take one step back and go for it again, Shobukhova said.Russias Maria Konovolova led early and Shobukhova was in front at halfway but the lead pack began to surge after 20 miles and Shobukhova fell off the pace.Shobukhova was unable to finish the London Olympic marathon because of stomach cramps and has been nagged by hamstring injuries this year, but won the 2011 event in 2:18:20.Kebede, third at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, moved to the front of the lead pack after 30 kilometers and by the 35km mark he was out with Regassa and Lilesa, who was third at last years world championships.Once Regassa slowed in the 23rd mile, it was a two-man show. Both leaders ran under 2:05:00 for the first time in their careers, but 2010 Chicago runner-up Kebede pulled away from Lilesa in the last half mile for the victory.Kenyas Sammy Kitwara was fourth, with countryman Wesley Korir, last years Chicago runner-up and this years Boston Marathon champion, in fifth.

Car bomb hits Syrian capital, killing at least one Posted: A car bomb exploded Sunday near the police headquarters in central Damascus, killing at least one person and damaging nearby buildings, Syrias state-run news agency said. The blast is the latest in a series of bombings and suicide attacks targeting security personnel and government institutions as Syria plunges deeper into chaos. Damascus, in particular, has become a frequent target for car bombs and suicide blasts, but there have been several massive bombings in the northern city of Aleppo and others cities across the country as well.Residents reported hearing a huge explosion that rattled the Syrian capital just after sundown Sunday. Another explosion was heard shortly after the first, but the nature of that blast was not immediately clear.A Syrian government official told The Associated Press the first blast was caused by a car bomb in the Fahameh district near police headquarters. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy, said the explosion damaged nearby cars and buildings. He did not say whether the police headquarters was among them. The official SANA news agency said one person was killed, and Syrian state TV described the blast as a terrorist attack.Syrian authorities deny there is an uprising in the country and blame the conflict on terrorists and armed gangs acting out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize Syria. The Syrian opposition denies any links to terrorists, but a Sunni extremist group called Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for bombings in the past.Explosions in the capital have become increasingly common as Syrias civil war escalates. On Aug. 18, rebels carried out a sophisticated bombing of a regime security building that killed four members of Assads inner circle.Last week, four bombs tore through a government-held district in Syrias commercial and cultural capital of Aleppo, killing more than 30 people and reducing buildings to rubble. The uprising against Assad began in March 2011 and gradually became a bloody civil war. The conflict has killed more than 30,000 people, activists say, and has devastated entire neighborhoods in Syrias main cities.

T20 title will revive Windies, says Sammy Posted: West Indies captain Darren Sammy hailed Sundays World Twenty20 triumph, their first world title in 33 years, as the start of a new golden chapter for Caribbean cricket. This is just the start, we will go far, Sammy said, after the 36-run victory over Sri Lanka in a dramatic final in Colombo. The West Indies, restricted to 137-6 after electing to bat, hit back to bowl the hosts out for 101 in front of 35,000 spectators at the Premadasa stadium that included Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse. It was the first world title for the West Indies since the 50-over World Cup triumph under Clive Lloyd in 1979, although they won the invitational Champions Trophy in England in 2004.Sammys men handed Sri Lanka their fourth defeat in a major final since 2007.This is the start of something special for the West Indies team and the fans back home, said Sammy.I will always cherish this moment. The team has been through a lot in the past few years, but there was belief amongst us that we could win the World T20.Today we were down and out, but our never-say-die attitude came out. We expected Sri Lanka to come hard at us and they did, but we never gave up and that helped us win.Sammy said people back home will celebrate the win wildly because they had craved for years for a success like this. From Jamaica to Guyana the party must have started, he said. And I tell you we know how to party. I am sure they will need a lot of bartenders out there tonight.Sammy showered praise on middle-order batsman Marlon Samuels, who engineered the victory with a superb 78 off 56 balls that included six sixes and three boundaries. He has been brilliant in this tournament and lived up to our expectations, said Sammy of Samuels, who served a two-year-ban from 2008 to 2010 for alleged links with bookmakers.Samuels brilliant strokeplay, which earned him the man of the match award, helped the West Indies add 105 runs in the last 10 overs after they were reduced to 32-2 from the first 10.
