Chavez reaches out to opposition after victory

Posted:

Hugo Chavez pledged to become a better president and work with the opposition after winning a tough re-election battle that betrayed simmering discontent at his socialist revolution. The leftist presidents victory was a relief to like-minded allies in the region, with Cuban leader Raul Castro hailing his friends historic triumph, while the United States urged him to listen to the opposition. After almost 14 years in power, Chavez survived cancer and the most formidable opponent of his presidency, youthful former state governor Henrique Capriles, to win Sundays election and another six-year term. The anti-US firebrand vowed to deepen his oil-funded socialist revolution after hailing his perfect victory. But he also reached out to disenchanted voters by pledging to work with the opposition, a tacit acceptance that this was a narrower victory than in the past and that Venezuela is a country very much divided.I want to include everybody, including sectors of the opposition, Chavez, wearing his trademark red shirt, told thousands of cheering supporters from the balcony of his Miraflores presidential residence.I commit to being a better president than Ive been these past few years, the 58-year-old leader said. Alluding to his cancer battle, he said: I thank God and ask him life and health to keep serving the Venezuelan people.Picked by the once divided opposition in an unprecedented primary, Capriles, 40, was able to woo voters from Chavez with promises to curb rising crime, reform the oil-dependent economy and unite the polarized nation. After a massive 81 percent turnout, Chavez won 55 percent, or nearly eight million, of the votes, while Capriles gave the opposition its best score against the president, 44.39 percent, or 6.4 million ballots. In 2006, Chavez thrashed opposition candidate Manuel Rosales, taking 62 percent of the vote and winning by a massive 25-point margin. The opposition is strengthened, with a clear leadership and many options for the future, Luis Vicente Leon, president of the Datanalisis polling firm, told AFP after Sundays much closer result.Chavez won without a doubt, Im not minimizing it, hes a political monster. But its not the same elections as 2006. Now the opposition has a leader who can seize on its unity, he said.Chavez can still count on a devout following among the countrys long-neglected poor, who adore him for the social missions that give them free health care, subsidized food, and sometimes housing.

Syria army steps up bid to crush Homs rebels

Posted:

The Syrian army pressed an offensive against rebel-held areas of the central province of Homs on Monday, seeking to eliminate the last pockets of resistance to free up troops for the north. The assault targeted two neighbourhoods of Homs city where rebel forces have been under siege for more than four months, and the nearby town of Qusayr which has been surrounded by the army since late last year, sources on both sides said. The army is in the midst of trying to cleanse the last rebel districts of the city of Homs, a Syrian army commander told AFP.The army has already cleansed the villages surrounding Qusayr, and is now trying to take back the town itself, the commander said on condition of anonymity.A security official told AFP the army hopes to retake the besieged areas by the end of the week to free up troops for battle zones in the north, such as the commercial capital Aleppo. It is a huge operation, and we hope to finish it off by the end of this week, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. After that, we will concentrate on the north of Syria.Homs province has suffered some of the worst bloodshed and destruction of the uprising which erupted against President Bashar al-Assads regime in March last year as the army has mounted repeated attempts to recapture rebel-held areas. The provinces porous border with northern Lebanon makes it strategically important -- the rebels have used ties to sympathisers over the frontier to smuggle supplies in and wounded fighters out, while the army has sought to block the supply lines.Homs is Syrias third largest city and the armys assault focused on the rebel-held Khalidyeh and Old City neighbourhoods, activists said. The army is using all kinds of weapons, and we are seeing enormous levels of destruction, an Old City-based activist who identified himself as Abu Bilal told AFP by Internet.Right now, there is still resistance from the (rebel) fighters, but if the army manages to enter the district, there will be a real massacre. The government deployed fighter jets over Homs for the first time on Friday, bombing Khaldiyeh, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.In Qusayr, a town just five kilometres (three miles) southwest of Homs, activists said troops were attacking from three sides. The army is trying to storm Qusayr from three entrances to the town, Qusayr-based activist Hadi al-Abdallah told AFP via the Internet. The situation here is bad. The shelling is very, very violent, he said.State television said the army had restored security to the village of Al-Atifiyeh, just outside Qusayr. It has also killed many terrorists, it added, using the governments term for rebel fighters.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that thousands of civilians were trapped in the areas under assault by the army.

Israel deploys Patriot missiles near northern port

Posted:

Israel has deployed Patriot anti-missile batteries near the northern port city of Haifa, Israeli media reported Monday, just two days after an unidentified drone infiltrated the countrys airspace.A military spokeswoman confirmed to AFP that the US-made missiles, which can shoot down drones, had been stationed near Haifa but refused to confirm the move was related to the Saturday infiltration.A defence official told AFP it was not the first time that the mobile Patriot batteries had been deployed near Haifa.Israeli fighter jets shot down the unarmed drone over the northern Negev desert on Saturday, after it entered the countrys airspace from the Mediterranean Sea near the Gaza Strip. The army said it did not believe the drone had been launched from Gaza but was looking into the possibility that Lebanese Hezbollah militants may have dispatched it, a military official told Israeli public radio.Patriot missiles, which the United States first sent to Israel during the 1991 Gulf war, were used to defend Haifa during Israels 2006 conflict with Hezbollah, when the Shiite militant group fired hundreds of rockets from neighbouring Lebanon. The Patriot system is capable of intercepting both aircraft and missiles.

More than 30 civilians killed by Nigeria military

Posted:

Nigerian soldiers angry about the killing of an officer shot dead more than 30 civilians Monday in a northeastern city long under siege by a radical Islamist sect. The attack came from soldiers attached to a special military unit on guard in Maiduguri, the spiritual home of the sect known as Boko Haram, in an effort to supposedly protect its citizens from the violence gripping the city. The killings likely will further antagonize a population already alienated by checkpoints, security force harassment and the threat of being killed by soldiers who are targets for the sects increasingly bloody guerrilla attacks. An Associated Press reporter in Maiduguri counted the dead while on a tour of the still-smoldering neighborhood Monday afternoon. The journalist saw no weapons or evidence that the dead belonged to the sect. A soldier nearby, who did not identify himself, claimed the attack was a response to a bombing nearby earlier Monday that he said killed a lieutenant. They killed our officer the soldier shouted. We had no optionsThe AP reporter also saw that soldiers had set fire to about 50 homes and businesses around the area, which sits near the Nigerian Union of Journalists state office and other buildings in Maiduguri. It appeared the soldiers attacked the area using assault rifles and heavy machine guns mounted on armored personnel carriers. Rounds shot from the heavy machine guns destroyed cars and set roofs on fire, which razed buildings and caused damage at a two-story shopping complex. The journalist accompanied Zanna Umar Mustapha, the deputy governor of Borno state, on the tour. State officials declined to comment about the killings and urged those traveling with the convoy not to take photographs of the destruction out of fear of further alienating those living in the region.Nigerias military has been accused of committing so-called extrajudicial killings while in pursuit of the Boko Haram sect. The military now routinely claims massive operations with dozens of people killed, always referred to as Boko Haram members or sympathizers, announcements that cannot be independently verified. The military also downplays its own casualties suffered during the operations.Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a spokesman for the military force in the city, declined to immediately comment about the retaliatory attack. Earlier in the day, he had said that two soldiers were wounded in the bombing. Col. Mohammed Yerima, a military spokesman in Nigerias capital, Abuja, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night. The killing of civilians comes as Boko Haram continues its bloody guerrilla campaign against Nigerias weak central government. The sect, whose name means Western education is sacrilege in the Hausa language of Nigerias north, is blamed for killing more than 690 people in drive-by killings and bombings this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

Skydiver eyes record-breaking jump over US

Posted:

Austrian skydiver and extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner hopes to take the leap of his life on Tuesday, attempting the highest, fastest free fall in history. If he survives, the man dubbed Fearless Felix could be the first skydiver to break the sound barrier. If he doesnt, a tragic fall could be live-streamed on the Internet for the world to see.The 43-year-old former military parachutist is scheduled to jump from a balloon-hoisted capsule 23 miles (37 kilometers) near Roswell on Tuesday morning. He wants to break the record set in 1960 by Joe Kittinger, who jumped from an open gondola at an altitude of 19.5 miles (31 kilometers). Kittingers speed of 614 mph (988 kph) was just shy of breaking the sound barrier at that height.Baumgartner, who has been preparing for the jump for five years, has made two practice runs from the Roswell area, from 15 miles (24 kilometers) high in March and 18 miles (28.97 kilometers) in July. And while he and his team of experts recognize the worst-case scenarios including boiling blood and exploding lungs they have confidence in their built-in solutions. Those solutions are something NASA is watching closely. The space agency is interested in the potential for escape systems on future rocket ships.Baumgartners top medical man is Dr. Jonathan Clark, a former NASA flight surgeon whose wife, astronaut Laurel Clark, died in the space shuttle Columbia accident in 2003. Clark is dedicated to improving astronauts chances of survival in a high-altitude disaster. The No. 1 fear is a breach of Baumgartners suit, which could cause potentially lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids, a condition known as boiling blood. There are also risks he could spin out of control, causing other problems. This death-defying venture is being sponsored by energy drink maker, Red Bull, which has funded other extreme athletic events. The projects team of experts has a plan for almost every contingency. The spacesuit and capsule were tested in the early skydiving practice runs. The company wont say how much the project, called Stratos for stratosphere, is costing. The organizers say there are some 30 video and still cameras to record the jump, including five attached to Baumgartners pressure suit, along with cameras from the capsule, on the ground and a helicopter.Red Bull has been promoting a live Internet stream of the event at http://www.redbullstratos.com/live , from all cameras except those on Baumgartners body. But organizers said there will be a 20-second delay in their broadcast of footage in case of a tragic accident. But whether Baumgartner can make what he vows will be his final jump depends on the weather. A cold front that brought winds to the area this weekend prompted the team to move the planned Monday jump to Tuesday.Baumgartners team remained optimistic about getting the mission off the ground. From what we are looking at so far, we are on schedule (for Tuesday), meteorologist Don Day said at a media briefing Sunday.Weather permitting, Baumgartner will be lifted into the stratosphere around 7 a.m. MDT (1300 GMT) by a helium balloon that will stretch 55 stories high. Once he reaches his target altitude, he will open the hatch of his capsule and make a gentle, bunny-style jump. Any contact with the capsule on his exit could break open the pressurized suit that will protect him from temperatures as low as minus 70 and a lack of oxygen. He hopes to reach a speed of 690 mph (1,110 kph) to break the sound barrier.Baumgartner, who has made more than 2,500 jumps from planes, helicopters, landmarks and skyscrapers over the past 25 years, promises this jump will be his last.He says he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

After reunion, adopted Swedes discover 12 more siblings

A set of twins separated at birth in Indonesia when they were put up for adoption and who found each other this year in Sweden have discovered they have another 12 siblings, the two said on Monday. We spoke to our biological mother this spring on Skype. She is around 65 years old. We have 11 brothers and sisters in Indonesia and one brother who was put up for adoption, Emelie Falck, 29, told AFP.My biological mother said that my 14-month-old son was her 22nd grandchild, added her twin sister Lin Backlund. The twins found each other earlier this year in Sweden, living in two nearby towns. The Skype conference with four of the sisters was moving, Lin said. Our mother said that she had waited for this day and that she had hoped to see us again.Falck said the sisters now want to find their brother who was also given up for adoption. He is the last piece of the puzzle... His family name at birth was Rajiman but we dont know what his name is today.According to several reports, the man could live in the Netherlands, having been adopted by a Dutch couple. It would mean a lot to share this with him since we now know that there is a large family in Indonesia that would be happy to see us. I hope that we can find him and that we can all be reunited, said Backlund.Lin and I have a good relationship because were twins but also because were geographically close to one another. If we can find him, I hope that hed want to become part of our lives, Falck added.I dont know a lot about my (biological) father. Weve only been told that he works a lot and that he no longer lives in the same place as our biological mother. They werent married when they put us up for adoption, said Backlund. In February, the twins told AFP about the story of their own reunion, which prompted the Indonesian press to identify their biological mother.

ICC launches probe after fixing allegations

Posted:

The International Cricket Council launched an urgent investigation Monday following allegations by an Indian television station that several umpires were willing to fix matches for money.India TV broadcast footage of a sting operation, undertaken by undercover reporters in August and September, that exposes six ICC umpires from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The ICC said none of the six officiated in any matches at the World Twenty20 that finished Sunday and was won by West Indies. The ICC and its relevant members have been made aware of the allegations made by India TV this evening and calls on the station to turn over any information which can assist the ICCs urgent investigations into this matter, the ICC said in a statement. The ICC re-iterates its zero-tolerance towards corruption whether alleged against players or officials.India TV identified the umpires in the sting and said three of them agreed to give favorable decisions, including in warm-up matches for the World Twenty20.Another was filmed in the sting called Operation World Cup promising to revolt against Sri Lankan cricket, and the fifth official was willing to ensure decisions would be given in favor of India. It is not clear what tournament or matches the two umpires were referring to.The sixth umpire shared the pitch and toss reports as well as playing line-ups for the warm-up match between England and Australia on Sept. 17 in exchange for 50,000 rupees, according to India TV.A seventh umpire, from Bangladesh, was approached but refused to cooperate. The allegations comes almost a year after Pakistan players Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were jailed for their roles in a betting scam during a test series against England in 2010.The trio were convicted of conspiring with an agent, Mazhar Majeed, to ensure the delivery of deliberate no-balls. Butt received 2 1/2 years, Asif was sentenced to one year and the then 19-year-old Amir six months. That was the biggest fixing scandal in the sport since South Africa captain Hansie Cronje was banned for life in 2000 for taking bribes from bookmakers.Another Pakistani player, Danish Kaneria, was banned for life by the England and Wales Cricket Board in June for corruption in a fixing case in English county cricket that also involved local player Mervyn Westfield.

Tennis: Gasquet wins in Shanghai, Almagro falls

Posted:

Richard Gasquet rediscovered the winning formula Monday after last weeks shock defeat in Beijing, cruising into the second round of the Shanghai Masters as Nicolas Almagro slumped to defeat.Gasquet crashed to a humiliating loss at the China Open to Chinese wildcard Zhang Ze, who was ranked 151 places below him, just days after the Frenchman won the Thailand Open by beating compatriot Gilles Simon. But the 26-year-old, seeded 11th in Shanghai, made sure there was no repeat on the second day of action in Shanghai, winning four out of five break points to dispatch American journeyman Brian Baker 6-2, 6-3.Tenth seed Cilic, who stands 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm) tall, joined him in the second round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Lukasz Kubot, hitting eight aces and breaking his Polish opponent four times. It was the first main draw match win in four attempts at the Shanghai Masters for the 24-year-old Croat, who fell in the first round in 2009-2011.But in the late evening match, Spanish ninth seed Almagro, chasing one of the last four slots at the ATP World Tour Finals, could not match his fellow seeds, slipping to defeat against Germany veteran Tommy Haas 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.The tenacious Haas battled back to take the second set in a tie-break before stepping up his game to break twice in the third set to seal the match.Earlier, Sam Querrey of the United States fired 11 aces in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chinese wildcard Zhe Li.I feel like Im playing better now than a year and a half ago when I was ranked number 17, said Querrey, now ranked 26th.Im more confident, he added. Felt good out there today. It was fun to play in that stadium. I thought I served great. I thought I returned well and I took advantage of the break points. That was the key.Bulgarias Grigor Dimitrov set up a clash with Novak Djokovic by beating Pablo Andujar of Spain 7-5, 6-3. But he faces a daunting task against the second seed, fresh from victory at the China Open and aiming to displace Roger Federer at the top of the rankings. The number one ranking is on the line at the Shanghai Masters.Federer can guarantee he remains as the top-ranked player by reaching the quarter-finals but anything less and Djokovic would overtake the Swiss by winning the Shanghai crown.Federer is beginning his 299th week as world number one, having usurped Djokovic at the top of the leaderboard after winning his 17th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.Apart from Federer and Djokovic, the top two seeds in Shanghai, the other main drawcard is US Open champion Andy Murray. The top eight seeds get a bye into the second round.Frenchman Benoit Paire defeated German qualifier Philipp Petzschner 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 to set up a clash with compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the fifth seed. There were also wins on Monday for Spains Tommy Robredo and Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Tiger eyes leading US at Ryder Cup -- just not yet

Posted:

Tiger Woods is looking ahead to captaining the United States following one of his poorest performances in a Ryder Cup.The 14-time major winner disappointed in only securing a half-point in his seventh Ryder Cup appearance when Europe retained the title on Sept. 30 at Medinah. But he hopes to play for the U.S. team a little while longer, saying the captaincy can wait. One day that would be fantastic and a huge honor to be a captain of a Ryder Cup team, but hopefully it doesnt happen in the near future, Woods said. I still want to be playing on a lot more teams but certainly one day, when my golfing life is slowing down and when its over, that would be a huge honor to be a part of a Ryder Cup from a captaincy side.Woods tied Raymond Floyd for the U.S. record for most losses in foursomes (eight) after pairing with Steve Stricker on Friday. He also went down in the fourballs on Friday and Saturday afternoon with the same partner.Having only played once on the winning team, in 1999, Woods is stinging at the latest loss.It didnt set in for me for a few days as to what happened in Medinah. I had two sick kids I had to care for and they also had to go to school. They had fevers and I was focused on them for a couple of days, he said. I then started to talk to my friends and teammates, and once it all started to sink in and the position we had been in and what transpired yes, it was tough for a couple of days.I texted Freddie (Couples) and Steve (Stricker) quite a bit, and like anything it is a tournament lost and you have to move on and focus on the next event. We lose far more than we win in this sport and you learn to move on. The next event is this week here in Turkey, and Ive got a good matchup with Charl (Schwartzel).Woods arrived Monday for the $5.3 million Turkish Airways World Golf Finals after a 10 1/2-hour flight on his own private jet from Orlando. Its his first visit to mainland Europe since 2003, and he landed to see numerous billboards promoting the eight-player event with first prize-money of $1.5 million that stated simply: Tiger v Rory.I dont face Rory until Wednesday, but its just nice to be here as this is my first time in Turkey, Woods said. I am trying to play all around the world. I am playing in Malaysia in a few weeks time, and that will be nice as I have not played there since Mark OMeara and I won the World Cup in 99.Unlike Woods, Rory McIlroy has been to Turkey before, supporting tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki for a season-ending event.Wozniacki is here to support McIlroy this time, and the top-ranked golfer is looking forward to getting back into the swing after the euphoria of the Ryder Cup.Its going to be a very exciting week with eight of the best players in the world, and the people of Turkey are going to see an event theyve never seen before, McIlroy said. I am still trying to come down from the high of the Ryder Cup, but its just nice to be here.I havent touched a club since the Ryder Cup as Ive just been chilling out with Caroline, so I will get to the golf course early tomorrow morning and see if its still there.

Oil prices fall after warning from World Bank

The World Bank signaled the possibility of a more pronounced slowdown in China, the worlds second largest economy after the United States. It also cut its growth forecast for Asia. Red-hot growth in emerging markets like China and India helped boost oil consumption coming out of the global recession.Benchmark crude fell 57 cents to $89.30 in afternoon trading in New York. The contract hasnt closed lower since Aug. 2.At the pump, gas prices remain stubbornly high. The national average for gasoline rose 3 cents over the weekend to $3.818 a gallon. But Californians are now paying an average of $4.668 a gallon, the highest price in the nation, after a jump of 50 cents in the past week. Some motorists there are paying over $5.In response, Gov. Jerry Brown has ordered state smog regulators to allow cheaper winter-blend gas to be sold three weeks early in the state. And Sen. Dianne Feinstein has called for a federal investigation because she doesnt think the higher prices are related to supply and demand.Experts are predicting prices in California could climb to an average of $4.85 before coming down.In London, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 40 cents to $111.62.
