Obama visits storm victims with Republican critic Posted: President Barack Obama joined one of his top Republican critics to visit victims of superstorm Sandy on Wednesday, giving Americans a high-profile display of presidential leadership while leaving rival Mitt Romney awkwardly on the sidelines less than a week before Election Day.Obama visited New Jersey, the state hardest hit by the storm which hammered much of the northeastern United States, accompanied by Gov. Chris Christie. The governor has been one of Romneys most prominent supporters, but he has been effusive in his praise of Obamas response to the storm.Christie greeted Obama as Air Force One landed on a sunny, breezy day in Atlantic City. The two men boarded the presidential helicopter for an hour-long aerial tour of the storm damage. In one town, someone had written ROMNEY in large letters in the sand that covered the ground.I want to let you know that your governor is working overtime, Obama told people at an emergency shelter after the tour. The entire country has been watching whats been happening. Everybody knows how hard Jersey has been hit. They spoke with victims and Christie said, Its really important to have the president of the United States here. Obama returned the compliment.Though Obama has suspended campaigning for three days in a tight race and New Jersey is safe Democratic territory, the tour with Christie offers him clear advantages. Obama can appear to be in command, directing U.S. aid and showing concern for the storms victims. The appearance with Christie also makes him look bipartisan at a time of deep division in U.S. politics.Romney, meanwhile, must walk a careful line. Aggressive attacks on Obama could appear unseemly during a national crisis. Yet he is running out of time to make his case to voters ahead of Tuesdays vote.Polls show the candidates virtually tied. But the winner will be determined in state-by-state votes, and a handful of states that are not clearly Democratic or Republican will determine the outcome. Obama appears to have a slight lead in the state tallies.Obamas campaign announced Wednesday he planned to resume campaign travel Thursday after a three-day pause with stops in Nevada, Colorado and Wisconsin.Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said the president and his campaign agreed that his job was to stay in Washington in face-to-face touch with those responsible for recovery. But Axelrod added: We passed a threshold here. And we do have an election on Tuesday. So we owe it to folks to make the final arguments and were going to do that. The presidents actions have forced Romney to make tough choices. The former Massachusetts governor must show respect for the superstorms casualties, but he can ill afford to waste a minute of campaign time, with the election six days away. After tamping down his partisan tone Tuesday at an Ohio event that emphasized disaster relief, Romney returned to a robust campaign message in events in Florida, the largest competitive state. Sandy largely spared Florida. This is quite a time for the country. Were going through trauma in a major part of the country, the kind of trauma youve experienced here in Florida more than once, Romney said, and he encouraged donations to the Red Cross. He then launched into a critique of Obamas leadership in tough economic times and said he would do better.I dont just talk about change. I actually have a plan to execute change and make it happen, Romney said.Romneys shifting stances on a number of key issues have haunted his campaign. After the superstorm battered the East Coast, Romney was sounding far more supportive of federal government assistance to states ravaged by the natural disaster. Only last year, as Romney leaned to the right while battling for the Republican nomination, he appeared to suggest in a debate that the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be shuttered and its responsibilities left to the states. |

Posted: Pakistani cricketer turned politician Imran Khan is welcome in the United States even though he was briefly held by US immigration agents in Canada, a US official said Wednesday. We are aware that he was detained briefly in Toronto before boarding his flight to the United States, acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters when asked about Khans questioning last week. But he disputed allegations that Khan was held and interrogated for hours as he tried to board a New York-bound plane from the Canadian city.Khan is the leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party (PTI) and has campaigned for an end to US drone strikes against suspected Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Pakistans tribal areas. My understanding is that the issue was quickly resolved and that he traveled into the United States, and certainly he is welcome in the United States, Toner said.Khan was headed to New York to attend a fundraiser organized by his party.I was taken off from plane and interrogated by US Immigration in Canada on my views on drones. My stance is known. Drone attacks must stop, he wrote on Twitter.Khan argues drone strikes are illegal and counterproductive and earlier this month he led thousands of supporters -- and a group of American peace activists -- on a march to the edge of Pakistans restive tribal districts to protest them.Toner said he did not know the specifics of why Khan was held, but added: I would just say that we certainly dont want any legitimate traveler delayed for no reason. |
US rejects Hafiz Saeed offer of storm aid Posted: The United States Wednesday rejected an offer of help for Americans hit by superstorm Sandy from the founder of a Pakistan-based Islamist group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founder of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit who has a $10 million US reward on his head, said his charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) was ready to help to those affected by the storm.Acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner recalled that Saeed is wanted for the 2008 attacks which killed 166 people, including six Americans. The LeT has also been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the State Department. We have great respect obviously for the Islamic tradition of social assistance to those who are in need, no matter where they might be, Toner told journalists. But this particular offer strikes us as very hollow.Sandy hammered the eastern United States early Tuesday, flooding much of New York City, causing a trail of damage across several states and leaving more than 50 people dead.Saeed, who is now head of JuD, said in a statement his organization was ready to offer every possible help volunteers, doctors, food, medicines and other relief items on humanitarian grounds if the US government allows us.America may have any opinion about us, it may fix bounties on our heads but as followers of the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), we feel it is our Islamic duty to help Americans trapped in a catastrophe.JuD is seen as a front for LeT, and in April the United States offered $10 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Saeed, who lives openly in Pakistans eastern city of Lahore.Saeeds charity has long denied terror accusations and is known in Pakistan for its relief work after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 floods. He was put under house arrest a month after the Mumbai attacks, but was later released after Pakistani courts ruled there was insufficient proof to hold him. |

Djokovic crashes out of Paris Masters Posted: Serbias Novak Djokovic on Wednesday crashed out of the Paris Masters in his first match, losing 0-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to American journeyman Sam Querrey in the second round.Djokovic, who is assured of finishing as the top of the ATP world rankings at the end of the season, has not lost a match at such an early stage of a competition since Miami in March 2010.His departure is a fresh blow for the tournament which has already had to do without star draw absentees Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.Djokovic, who regardless of this defeat takes over the world number one spot from Federer on Monday, strode onto the court wearing a Darth Vader mask but found himself the victim of a Halloween horror show.Querrey fired 18 aces in a battle lasting just over two hours, with the American winning his first career match against a top three player after nine defeats.Djokovic had spoken this week about the repercussions the lack of a rest week prior to the season-ending World Tour Finals which begin in London on Monday could have, though barely imagining that he could be the weeks first major victim.I knew the main problems would be my energy, it wasnt there during the second set. I really felt my level drop, said Djokovic after the defeat.I struggled every game, but on the brighter side I have time to rest. Ive been through a really difficult period this last few weeks. There have been a lot of things on my mind, some things happened...I have a couple of days now to rest. Ive had to face some things a bit unusual for me, but when you lose a match you move on and go to the last tournament of the year.Djokovic did not comment on reports that his father has been in hospital in Serbia with a respiratory problem.Wednesdays shock win was the first for the 23rd-ranked Querrey against Djokovic.Djokovic, who had not played since beating Andy Murray for the Shanghai title to win two Asian trophies in subsequent weeks last month, found his win streak stopped on ten.The last two places in the London field will be decided this week in Paris, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the next qualification candidate. He heads Serb Janko Tipsarevic, who kept his hopes alive as he reached the third round at the Bercy arena of Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-4, 7-6 (7/0).French 12th seed Richard Gasquet lost his chance to continue on pace for the year-end event as he went down in the second round Dutchman Igor Sijsling 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-1.Provisional London 12th man Juan Monaco of Argentina bolstered his long-odds hopes with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 defeat of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. |

The first two in each group advance. |
Chelsea formally complains about referee to FA Posted: Chelsea has lodged a formal complaint to the English Football Association accusing a referee of using inappropriate language toward midfielder John Obi Mikel. An internal investigation by Chelsea into Sundays Premier League match against Manchester United, however, has found there was not sufficient evidence to support a second claim of verbal abuse by referee Mark Clattenburg against another player, Juan Mata.London police have already launched an investigation into the allegations. |

Afghan boxer wins 1st pro fight in war-torn nation Posted: Afghan boxer Hamid Rahimi won the first professional bout in his war-torn country Tuesday by stopping Said Mbelwa of Tanzania in the seventh round.Rahimi, who is based in Germany, said his aim in organizing Afghanistan Fight 4 Peace was to bring the people of his country together after decades of warfare.Several hundred spectators watched the bout live in a large hall in the capital, cheering wildly when Rahimi won the vacant WBO intercontinental middleweight title. Mbelwa was unable to continue because of a shoulder injury.Mbelwa had showboated in the early rounds, but retreated to his corner holding his shoulder in the seventh after Rahimi delivered four fierce rights in quick succession.Rahimis supporters carried a banner reading We Want Peace during the match. Spectators crowded into the ring after the match to congratulate both fighters.I am very happy because this victory belongs to all Afghans, Rahimi said. The boxer has lived in Germany since childhood when his parents moved there in 1992. Oil market mixed as New York reopens Posted: Global oil prices were mixed Wednesday as trading volume picked up on the New York Mercantile Exchange after the reopening of floor trade following a two-day shutdown forced by superstorm Sandy.New Yorks benchmark oil futures contract, West Texas Intermediate light sweet crude for delivery in December, gained 56 cents at $86.24 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for December lost 38 cents at $108.07 a barrel in London trading.Refineries on the US East Coast that were shut down or reduced operations before the superstorm struck Monday were resuming production, picking up demand for crude shipments. But downstream demand, which slowed sharply for the storm, was expected to remain weak for several more days, leaving little pressure on the market overall. While we expect diesel demand to get some boost due to auxiliary power generation and recovery efforts, jet fuel demand is likely to struggle for several weeks, said JPMorgan analysts in a client note.Greg Priddy of Eurasia Group said that the market continues to be under pressure from softening demand as the world economy slows. The most likely path forward lies toward increased headwinds for crude oil, as demand growth expectations are adjusted downward and supply forecasts increase, but with important caveats regarding potential escalations in Middle East risks, Priddy said in a new market report. The net impact from Hurricane Sandy on overall demand, while modest, should be bearish. |

The dollar fell to 0.9310 Swiss franc from 0.9323 Swiss franc. |
Redheads at cancer risk regardless of sun exposure: study Posted: People with pale skin and red hair may be more prone to developing a deadly form of skin cancer regardless of whether they spend time in the sun or not, a study said Wednesday. Not only is this group more vulnerable to the suns ultraviolet (UV) rays, but a study in mice has now shown that the pigment that gives hair a red hue may in itself have cancer-causing effects, said a paper in the journal Nature. We studied melanoma formation in redheaded mice and discovered that the red pigment had an ability to promote melanoma formation, even in the absence of ultraviolet radiation exposure, co-author David Fisher, cancer centre director at Massachusetts General Hospital, told AFP.This was a surprising result for us, because we expected that fair skinned people get melanoma due to weak protection from sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. However the results suggest that even without UV exposure, the red pigment may contribute to melanoma formation by damaging healthy cells.Light-skinned redheads with freckles and an inability to tan have trouble producing the black-grown pigment eumelanin, which absorbs harmful UV rays -- instead producing the red-yellow pigment pheomelanin which provides a weak UV shield. In lab studies using dark, red and albino mice, Fisher and a team discovered that melanoma occurred more frequently in the red mice than the other two groups, regardless of whether they were exposed to UV or not.The study showed that completely avoiding UV rays would not protect red-haired people from melanoma, United States cancer researchers Mizuho Fukunaga-Kalabis and Meenhard Herlyn wrote in a comment carried by Nature.About 132,000 cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are diagnosed each year and two to three million non-melanoma cancers, according to the World Health Organisation, which says the numbers rise every year.Fukunaga-Kalabis and Herlyn said the findings begged the question: what can be done beyond sun protection to reduce melanoma risk in red-haired, fair-skinned people?Research was needed, the pair said, into the drugs that may induce eumelanin production or boost cancer-protecting antioxidants. Moreover, red-haired individuals should undergo frequent dermatological skin checks, besides avoiding sun exposure. |
Yellow fever kills 32 in Sudan's Darfur ministry Posted: Mosquito-born yellow fever has killed 32 people in Sudans conflict-plagued Darfur region this month, the health ministry said in a statement obtained by AFP on Wednesday.According to laboratory results, people are affected by yellow fever. The total number affected in the two states is 84, 32 of whom died, the statement said, referring to outbreaks in Central and South Darfur. The October 30 statement said a vaccination campaign is being prepared. In the meantime, the ministry has sent blood supplies and medicines to the area, and has a plan to fight mosquitos, it said. The UNs World Health Organisation said the ministry notified it of the outbreak in the districts of Azoom, Kass, Mershing, Nertiti, Nyala, Wadi Salih and Zalingei. The federal Ministry of Health, WHO and other health partners are working on the ground to ensure timely containment of the outbreak, a statement said.Samples were sent on Wednesday to a lab in Dakar, Senegal to reconfirm the diagnosis, a first step towards beginning the vaccination programme possibly by early December, WHO country representative Anshu Banerjee told AFP.In Darfur there hasnt been any immunisation campaign before, he said.Data expected in about a week should indicate whether the number of cases from the current outbreak is rising or falling. The people that have been most affected are nomads, and the outbreak could be linked to this years heavy rains and flooding in Darfur, as more mosquitos breed, Banerjee said. There is no specific treatment for the viral illness found in tropical regions of Africa but it can be contained through the use of bed nets, insect repellents and long clothing.Vaccination is the single most important measure for preventing yellow fever, WHO said.A 2005 outbreak of the disease in Sudans South Kordofan state caused 163 deaths out of 604 cases over about five months. In January 2011, 35 people died from yellow fever in Ivory Coast, WHO said.Ethnic African Darfur rebels rose against the Arab-dominated Khartoum government in 2003. The United Nations estimates at least 300,000 people died, but the government puts the toll at 10,000.An estimated 1.7 million Darfur people are still living in camps for the displaced, the UN says.Violence has eased since the early days of the nine-year-old war but various conflicts persist: rebel-government clashes, inter-Arab and tribal fighting, as well as carjackings and other banditry. |
