Announce election dates, Nawaz asks government Posted: PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has expressed this gladness that the current government was nearly ending its tenure without Army’s umbrella. He said that it should kill further suspense by announcing the exact date for elections, while he would like to announce it publicly that he had no objections over government’s investigations through FIA, as Supreme Court’s orders must be carried out.He expressed that that COAS had talked about rule of law and constitution, and rejected the notion of his being against army as whole; “Rather I have reservations against some generals “, he clarified.“Actually I had complained about a parallel government being run by my COAS (Musharraf), as ISI was making its own decisions without taking my approval.”Assuring that he full regards for the Army, he said that he would always respect and cooperate with Army, as long as it proceeded according to law and Constitution.“As such, if government also acted within its constitutional jurisdiction, and PM also remained within his limits, other institutions would also follow the act,“ he expressed. He said that his main contention was with the imprudent policies of the government, and while this government had been tolerated with great patience, PML-N would still want a democratic and constitutional change with masses’ mandate.Referring to the Supreme Court’s verdict, he said that it was a volume of Asad Durrani’s and Younas Habit’s contradictions. He also highlighted Asad Durrani’s ambassadorial tenure during Benazir’s government, during which Rehman Malik managed a signed letter from him (Asad Durrani). He was also critical of Younas Habib’s remembering names of PML-N beneficiaries, while he pretended to forget PPP’s beneficiaries, who were doled Rs270 million during 1993 elections.
Dual nationality: Over 200 lawmakers fail to submit affidavits Posted: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had set November 9 (Friday) as the last date for the submission of affidavits on the directive of the Supreme Court after a large number of lawmakers were disqualified for holding dual citizenships, disallowed under the Constitution.Prime Minister Raja Pervez Asharf and over 200 lawmakers failed to submit affidavits as the dateline expired. The fate of over 200 Pakistani lawmakers hangs in the balance as the Election Commission decides on their future on Monday, following their failure to submit declarations affirming they do not hold dual nationality. The ECP has called a session on Nov 12 to decide on the issue of legislators who had not submitted their declarations by Friday – the commission’s deadline for filing the affidavits.Chief Election Commission Fakhruddin G Ebrahim said the ECP is firm on acting against dual national legislators following the Supreme Court’s clear orders.Pakistan’s apex court, disqualifying 11 legislators on Sept 20 for holding dual nationalities, had directed the ECP to obtain fresh declarations on oath from all legislators to examine their cases individually.A senior ECP official said the commission had made it clear that those failing to submit fresh declarations would be presumed to be possessing dual nationality, which would ultimately lead to their disqualification. The official had earlier said that as many as 331 lawmakers, including the prime minister and some of his cabinet colleagues, had not submitted their affidavits by Wednesday. He said that some lawmakers who had proceeded on Haj might get some more time to submit fresh declarations.Another source in the Election Commission said Friday that up to 212 lawmakers were yet to file their declarations.According to the source, the lawmakers include 75 from the National Assembly, 29 from the Senate, 76 from Sindh Assembly, 24 from Punjab Assembly, 7 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and one legislator from the Balochistan Assembly.

UN atomic agency to hold December talks with Iran Posted: The UN atomic agency said Friday it will hold next month its first talks with Iran since August over Tehrans nuclear efforts, in a first sign of renewed diplomatic activity since the US election. The aim is to conclude the structured approach to resolving outstanding issues related to Irans nuclear programme, International Atomic Energy Agency spokeswoman Gill Tudor said in confirming the December 13 meeting. The Vienna-based IAEA wants Tehran to address evidence suggesting that until 2003, and possibly since, Iran conducted research work relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device.A parallel diplomatic push by six world powers has been aimed at persuading Iran to scale back parts of its current nuclear programme because of suspicions -- denied by Tehran -- that it wants the bomb.Efforts on both tracks have, however, effectively been on hold in recent months because of campaigning for the US presidential election that incumbent Barack Obama won Tuesday. The last high-level talks between Iran and the P51 -- Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany -- took place in Moscow in June. The (US) administration was in a very defensive position for the past six months, Mark Hibbs of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said this week. It was also difficult for Iran because they didnt want to negotiate with someone who might not be in office after November.Analysts and diplomats told AFP after Obamas re-election this week that a new round of P51 talks was possible before the end of the year or in early 2013. Experts also see bilateral US-Iranian talks as possible. However, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said there were no plans yet for a meeting of the P51 group, and again categorically denied as ridiculous reports of secret talks between Washington and Tehran.
13 inmates killed in Sri Lanka prison clashes Posted: At least 13 inmates of a Sri Lankan prison were killed in a shootout Friday with security forces and 32 were wounded, a doctor said, as rioting prisoners appeared to take control of at least part of the facility in the countrys capital.Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said the fighting began when police commandos went to Welikada prison in the capital, Colombo, to conduct a search and were attacked by inmates hurling stones. He declined to provide more information. Officials often conduct raids for narcotics and communication devices. An Associated Press photographer saw prisoners waving rifles atop the roof Friday night.Other prisoners piled into a three-wheeled vehicle and began driving toward a main city road before security forces outside the prison opened fire. The vehicle stopped, and three unmoving bodies could be seen.Dozens of security officers then entered the prison, and volleys of gunfire rang out.Prisoners could be heard screaming, Stop shootingArmy troops later were called in to help control the situation.Dr. Prasad Kariyawasam said 11 bodies of inmates and 21 wounded inmates were brought to Colombo National Hospital in Sri Lankas capital. He said two of the injured died at the hospital. He did not immediately comment on the condition of the others.Eleven police officers, a prison guard and a passerby were also being treated at the hospital for injuries, the doctor said.Prison chief P.W. Kodippili said inmates had broken into the prisons two armories and took the weapons stored there. The inmates opened fire at police commandos, who shot back, Kodippili told a local television channel Friday night.Kodippili said prison officials were trying to get the weapons back from the inmates and had and so far collected four.
Egyptian Islamists rally for Shariah law Posted: Over 10,000 ultraconservative Muslims demonstrated Friday in downtown Cairo to demand that Egypts new constitution be based on the rulings of Islamic law, or Shariah, in the latest tussle over the role of religion in the countrys future. The writing of the constitution has been fraught with controversy since last years political uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak and ushered in the rise of formerly repressed Islamists to power. But Islamists themselves are not in agreement over the interpretation of Shariah and its place in the document.Demonstrators in Tahrir Square demanded that the panel tasked with writing the constitution override liberal and secular objections and include language that could see religious scholars influencing legislation. The panel is led by the Muslim Brotherhood, the powerful Islamist group from which the countrys new President Mohammed Morsi hails.Shariah is our constitution, and, The people demand the application of Gods law, protesters chanted. The controversy surrounding the constitution is centered on the wording of the second amendment. In the former constitution, the wording stated that the principles of Islamic Shariah are the basis of legislation. This wording is favored by liberals because they say it refers to the broad ideas of Islam.Ultraconservatives are pushing for more, though. They want the wording changed to state that the basis of law will be the rulings of Shariah, implying Egypts laws may be left to the interpretation of religious scholars. The current 100-member assembly has just a handful of women, some of them from the Brotherhood, and eight Christians. It is the second constitutional assembly to be formed, with the first body dissolved by court order earlier this year after liberals and seculars walked out over complaints that Islamists were trying to dominate the process.Ongoing controversy over the wording of the charter has thrown into question when the draft will be complete. Panel members say they plan to put the charter to a nationwide referendum before the end of the year. However, liberals on the panel are again threatening to walk out and Islamists writing the draft are under pressure from more conservative groups to strongly enshrine Shariah in the constitution. Egypts new Coptic pope, Tawadros II, said this week that the constitution will not be acceptable if it is overtly religious. Courts are also currently reviewing lawsuits calling for the assembly to be disbanded for a second time.Egypts two most powerful political movements, the Brotherhood and the more conservative Salafi Nour Party, said they were not participating in Fridays protest, although many of their supporters did. The two groups, which hold an influential number of seats in the assembly, have said protests are premature since the constitution is still being written.
Sabra elected chief of Syria's SNC opposition Posted: Veteran dissident George Sabra, a Christian former communist, was elected president of the main opposition bloc the Syrian National Council at a meeting in Doha on Friday. The SNCs 41-member general secretariat, itself newly elected, chose Sabra, who garnered 28 votes, as part of efforts to revamp the group working to oust President Bashar al-Assad.Faruk Tayfur of the Muslim Brotherhood was elected his vice president.Sabra, in his first statement as SNC chief, vowed to work with other components of the Syrian opposition to accelerate the fall of the (presidents) criminal regime.Asked what he wanted from the international community, he said: We have only one demand, and that is to stop the bloodbath and help the Syrian people chase out this bloody regime by providing us with weapons. We want arms, Sabra said three times.A long-time opponent of Assad rule, first under the current presidents father Hafez and later after Bashar took over in 2000, Sabra left Syria secretly at the beginning of the year.He was jailed for eight years under Hafez al-Assad, and detained twice -- for a month and then two months -- after the uprising erupted in March last year.Sabra was freed in September 2011, and immediately went into hiding before his departure early this year. The election of a Christian as SNC leader sends a strong message to the international community, given that the Assad regime paints itself as defenders of Christianity against Islamist extremism. It also shows the blocs willingness to be broadly representative of the Syrian people: the outgoing SNC chief, Abdel Basset Sayda, is a Kurd. However, a major activist network quit the bloc on Friday amid divisions between the opposition, and other anti-Assad groups went ahead with a unity meeting in Doha even though the SNC had asked for a delay. The SNC had sought to meet on Saturday after choosing a new chief, having already elected the secretariat, a third of them Islamists, and as it faced charges of not being representative enough.
Djokovic, Murray win at ATP finals and reach semis Posted: Needing to win only one set to join Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the ATP Finals, Andy Murray delighted the adoring home crowd by winning two.The U.S. Open and Olympic champion defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 7-6 (3) Friday to reach Sundays semifinals, hours after Djokovic advanced by beating Tomas Berdych 6-2, 7-6 (6).Because Djokovic won the early match at the O2 Arena in straight sets, Murray needed only to win one set to ensure his passage. And he got that easily, breaking Tsongas serve in the first and third games en route to a 4-0 lead.Murray had another early break in the second set, but Tsonga got it back to even the score at 3-3 and eventually force the tiebreaker.Murray (2-1) finished second in Group A, while Djokovic (3-0) was first. The ATP finals is the last tournament of the season, and only for the top eight players in the world. In Group B, six-time champion Roger Federer has already qualified for the semifinals and will face Juan Martin del Potro in his final group match on Saturday. David Ferrer is also in the group and can still qualify for the semifinals, but Janko Tipsarevic has been eliminated. Before coming to London, Djokovic lost in the second round of the Paris Masters, and said after that match that he felt down physically. But against Berdych, the top-ranked Serb ran all over the court, retrieving ball after ball and making his opponent work hard on nearly every point. If you are winning matches, I mean, obviously you feel better, Djokovic said. But still, I mean, the fact is that it being the last tournament of the year here in London for most of the players, it is a challenge finding that last drop of energy, physical, mental, to find their best game and go as far as they can.Djokovic, who reclaimed the No. 1 ranking at the beginning of the week, broke his Czech opponent twice in the first set and once in the second, though he was broken right back on the third occasion to force the tiebreaker.Berdych then had his opportunities to win the second set, leading 5-1 and 6-3 in the tiebreaker, but he wasted all three of his set points as Djokovic won five straight to close out the match.I had some chances in the tiebreak, said Berdych, who was eliminated from the tournament with a 1-2 record. If I would be able to make it, try to push him for the third set, then maybe get another chance. But this would be just if. It didnt happen.Berdych has only beaten Djokovic once in 12 tries, and that came two years ago on grass in the Wimbledon semifinals. On hard courts, Djokovic is now 10-0 against the hard-hitting Czech.Besides playing tennis and winning tournaments, Djokovic has also had his fathers health on his mind. On Friday, the top-ranked Serb said his father was getting better but didnt give any detail as to what the problem is.Well, every win means a lot for my family and me, Djokovic said. But there are more important things in life, and thats health. I guess thats the priority now.Despite bowing out from the ATP finals, Berdych still has more tennis to play this season. He will lead the Czech Republic against Spain next week in the Davis Cup final. Its another week, another event, another big thing. So I will try to get ready for that again, Berdych said. I hope that the best moment is still to come.
Boxing champ Klitschko facing taller, heavier Wach Posted: Wladimir Klitschko has looked down on all the opponents hes faced since turning pro 16 years ago, but on Saturday the 1.98 meter (6-foot-6) Ukrainian will face someone taller for the first time. Not only that, but Mariusz Wach of Poland is heavier too, weighing in at 113.8 kilos (251 pounds), compared to the 112 (247) Klitschko registered at Fridays weigh-in.Klitschko will need to make up four centimeters (1½ inches) when he defends his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts against the formidable two-time Polish champion, who also has a longer reach. The big challenge for me is Wachs height, Klitschko said when the bout was announced. He is unbeaten, a big puncher and has an irrepressible will.Perhaps only the 7-foot-2 Nikolai Valuev could have posed a greater physical challenge for the 36-year-old Klitschko, but the Russian Giant retired in 2009 after losing his WBA title to British fighter David Haye.Klitschko defeated former cruiserweight Haye in his previous fight in Hamburg, in July 2011, and will be fighting for the fourth time in his adopted hometown. The 32-year-old Wach, who has won all 27 of his bouts, 15 by knockout, since turning pro in 2005, is aiming to become Polands first world heavyweight champion.Klitschko, meanwhile, is 58-3 (51 KOs) going into his 22nd world championship fight the first since the death of his longtime coach and friend Emanuel Steward last month. As if he needed extra motivation.I will defend the titles that I won together with Emanuel Steward, the 36-year-old said at Mondays press conference. He wasnt just a coach. Emanuel Steward was a genius, a genius in the ring.It will be Klitschkos third defense this year after knockout wins over Jean-Marc Mormeck of France in March and American challenger Tony Thompson in July.Actor and director Sylvester Stallone, famous from his role in the Rocky series of films, will attend the bout, part of the promotional campaign for the Rocky musical.Klitschko and his older brother Vitali, together with Stallone, had a hand in the production of Rocky: Fight from the Heart, which opens in Hamburg on Nov. 18.
NBA: Lakers fire Brown as coach after 1-4 start Posted: Mike Brown was fired as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after the team started the NBA season by losing four of its first five games, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said Friday. The firing came only hours ahead of the Lakers playing host to Golden State, a game in which the squad will be guided by assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff on an interim basis. A search for a new head coach is already under way. This was a difficult and painful decision to make, Kupchak said. Mike was very hard-working and dedicated, but we felt it was in the best interest of the team to make a change at this time. The Lakers have the worst record in the Western Conference but the NBAs largest payroll at more than $100 milllion, one that would spark a luxury tax hit of more than $30 million for owners by the end of the season.Superstar guard Kobe Bryant has struggled with a foot injury while nagging injuries and his death stare glare at Brown during a loss on Wednesday to Utah might have hinted his feelings about Brown, who has almost three full years remaining on a four-year deal worth $18 million.Injuries have also hampered the teams two star off-season acquisitions, guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard.Howard is still trying to find top form after back surgery earlier this year while Nash has been healthy for only one full game so far this season because of a leg injury. The Lakers also boast Spanish playmaker Pau Gasol and were expected to contend for a title but they went winless in pre-season games and lost their first three games before beating winless Detroit 95-86 last Sunday.Former Lakers star player, coach and part-owner Magic Johnson said in a Twitter posting that he never thought Brown should have been coaching the Lakers.Feel bad for Coach Mike Brown, whos a great guy, but dont think he was the right guy for the job in the first place, Johnson tweeted.Former Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who guided the Lakers to five NBA titles before retiring in 2011, was among those mentioned as possible replacements. Brown replaced Jackson in the job before the start of last season. The Lakers went 41-25 under Brown last season, losing to Oklahoma City in the second round of the NBA playoffs.Brown coached Cleveland from 2005-2010, guiding the team to the 2007 NBA Finals when LeBron James was sparking the Cavaliers attack. Brown went 272-138 during his time in Cleveland.
