Assad rejects exile, vows to 'live and die' in Syria Posted: A defiant President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday rejected calls that he seek a safe exit, vowing he will live in Syria and die in Syria and warning that the world cannot afford the cost of a foreign intervention.I am not a puppet. I was not made by the West to go to the West or to any other country, Assad said in English in an interview with Russian state-backed Russia Today (RT) television.I am Syrian, I was made in Syria, I have to live in Syria and die in Syria, he said, according to transcripts posted on RTs website. On Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron floated the idea of granting Assad safe passage from the country, saying it could be arranged, although he wanted him to face international justice.Assad, who has made only rare public statements in recent months, also warned against a foreign intervention in Syrias escalating conflict, saying such a move would have global consequences and shake regional stability. We are the last stronghold of secularism and stability in the region... it will have a domino effect that will affect the world from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the transcript said.In a separate video extract of the interview, Assad added: The price of this invasion, if it happens, is going to be big, more than the whole world can afford. Many in Syrias opposition, including rebels battling pro-regime forces, have urged world powers to intervene to stop the escalating bloodshed.Fighting continued around the country on Thursday, as the Red Cross said it was struggling to cope with Syrias worsening humanitarian crisis.Heavy clashes for control of the mainly Kurdish northeastern town of Ras al-Ain on the Turkish border killed 16 soldiers and 10 rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.Syrian state television reported that troops killed dozens of terrorists who tried to attack Ras al-Ain and the rebels then fled back into Turkey.Turkish media reported five Turks wounded by ricochets from across the border.Fresh violence also broke out in the southern Damascus neighbourhood of Qadam and in Mazzeh in the west of the capital, said the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of activists and medics on the ground. It said at least 86 people were killed on Thursday, including 38 soldiers. The Observatory says more than 37,000 people have died since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011, first as a protest movement and then an armed rebellion after the regime cracked down on demonstrations.
10 peasants killed in Colombia massacre Posted: Colombian officials say 10 peasants have been killed by a drug-trafficking paramilitary group in a northeastern region of the country. The massacre was carried out by a group known as Los Rastrojos who stormed into a tree tomato farm at around 6 p.m. local time (2300 GMT) on Wednesday. The group killed nine men and a woman in the municipality of Santa Rosa de los Osos located in the state of Antioquia, about 275 kilometers northeast of the capital Bogota says Santiago Londono, government secretary for Antioquia. Its the first major massacre in Colombia since August 2009 when 12 members of the Awa indigenous tribe were in the southwestern state of Narino. At the time, Guillermo Mendoza a prosecutor investigating the case told the AP that it had also been carried out by Los Rastrojos.Antioquia Police General David Guzman said three armed men arrived to the farm at around 6 p.m. Wednesday when farm laborers were finishing their day of work picking the fruit also known as tamarillo and asked them if they were paying an extortion fee.One of the laborers, apparently the foreman said he didnt know (of any payment). Thats all they said and they were shot indiscriminately, Guzman said, adding that after shooting them with rifles and guns, they hauled a grenade at them. This case has shocked us for the barbaric, brutal way that they murdered these completely innocent people, he said. The Rastrojos, or Leftovers, is a violent offshoot of the Norte del Valle cartel involved in drug trafficking, extortion and murder as it competes with other criminal bands that grew out of the far-right militias known as paramilitaries.Colombian police say the gang, which is thought to have hundreds of members, operates on Colombias Pacific coast and along the border with Venezuela.
US says Iran fired on US drone over Gulf Posted: An Iranian attack aircraft fired at least twice at an unarmed U.S. drone conducting routine surveillance in international airspace over the Gulf, the Pentagon said Thursday. The aircraft missed and the drone returned to base unharmed. The shooting in the Gulf, which occurred just before 5 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Nov. 1, was unprecedented, Pentagon press secretary George Little said. The incident was not disclosed sooner because the military does not discuss classified surveillance missions, but agreed to answer questions after news reports revealed the shooting.Little said the drone was about 16 miles (26 kilometers) off the Iranian coast when the Russian-made SU-25 Frogfoot warplane intercepted it and opened fire. He said it was the first time an unmanned U.S. aircraft was shot at in international airspace over the Gulf. Our aircraft was never in Iranian air space. It was always flying in international air space, Little told Pentagon reporters. The United States has communicated to the Iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance flights over international waters over the Arabian Gulf, consistent with longstanding practice and our commitment to the security of the region.According to the Pentagon, the Iranian war plane made at least two passes by the slower-moving drone, firing multiple rounds.Little said that once the Predator drone came under fire, it began to move further out and the Iranian aircraft continued to pursue it for some period of time before letting it return to base. The Iranian plane did not follow the drone all the way back to its base, Little said, declining to say where that base was.He said there was no other U.S. aircraft nearby that could respond to the attack, and added that the U.S. believes Iran was trying to shoot the drone down. This is the second incident involving a U.S. drone and Iran.In December 2011 a U.S. RQ-170 Sentinel drone equipped with stealth technology was captured in eastern Iran. Tehran claims it brought down the aircraft, but U.S. officials said the drone malfunctioned and had to land. After initially saying only that a drone had been lost near the Afghan-Iran border, American officials eventually confirmed the plane was monitoring Irans military and nuclear facilities. Washington asked for it back but Iran refused, and instead released photos of Iranian officials studying the aircraft.International waters begin at 12 nautical miles offshore.

That followed a decline of 5 percent on Wednesday, when traders were spooked by worries about budget negotiations in the U.S. Analysts also say that oil supplies and production are high, which tends to drive down prices.Oil analyst Jim Ritterbusch wrote in a note that he expects this weeks price volatility to subside, but theres still a bias toward new lows. The U.S. has large inventories of oil and production is at 17-year highs, he wrote. In other trading, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, gained 51 cents to $107.33 per barrel in London. |

Del Potro crushes Tipsarevic to stay in semis race Posted: Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro crushed Serbian eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-0, 6-4 on Thursday to keep alive his hopes of securing a place in the semi-finals of the ATP Tour Finals. After both players lost their opening Group B matches, this clash at Londons O2 Arena had become a must-win encounter and it was former US Open champion del Potro who seized his chance to avoid an early exit with a brutal display of power hitting.Del Potro, seeded sixth, has lost just twice indoors in 2012 and he blew Tipsarevic off the court in just one hour and 16 minutes. The Argentine still needs a win against Roger Federer in his final group match on Saturday to reach the last four and even that may not be enough depending on the result of David Ferrers meeting with Tipsarevic. At least del Potro still has a chance, unlike Tipsarevic who is destined to crash out after losing both his matches without even winning a set.Only Federer, Novak Djokovic and Ferrer have amassed more than del Potros career-high total of 65 match wins this year and, with recent titles in Basle and Vienna on his CV, he is clearly determined to finish the year on a high.Del Potro, who was Tour Finals runner-up in 2009, had won all three of his previous encounters with Tipsarevic and the result was never in doubt after he made the perfect start with a break in the opening game. The Argentine saved a break point on his own serve before seizing control of the set with a second break, secured with a forehand bludgeoned with ferocious power.Leading 3-0, del Potro refused to take his foot off the gas and he broke again in the fifth game before closing out the set.Tipsarevic had been struggling with a virus before the start of the tournament and he looked short of energy and inspiration here.He finally stopped the rot by holding serve at the start of the second set, but del Potro was striking the ball too well to be denied for long and he landed the decisive break in the fifth game.
Federer vows to probe ATP prize money snub Posted: Roger Federer has vowed to investigate the ATPs controversial decision to reject an offer to increase prize money at the Indian Wells tournament. The issue of prize money has been a hot topic for the last 12 months as stars like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic push for the four Grand Slams to raise the financial rewards on offer. As president of the ATP players council, Federer has been keen to ensure any increase in prize money is spread equally among the lower ranked players as well as the leading names. And the players, who had talked at times of considering strike action to make their point, appeared to be winning the battle as Wimbledon and the Australian, French and US Opens all opened up the coffers to improve prize money this year. But the ATP delivered a surprise blow to the cause earlier this month when it was revealed that organisers of the Indian Wells event in California -- one of the ATPs flagship Masters 1000 tournaments -- had been snubbed when they offered to improve the total prize money pot by 1 million pounds ($1.6 million), meaning an extra $800,000 each for the mens and womens competitions. The decision was reportedly taken because the tournament wanted to give more to those losing in the earlier rounds in a contravention of the ATPs rules, but many players are said to be furious about the move and Federer plans to ask questions in a bid to resolve the problem. For me, I was a bit surprised to hear that, Federer said after his win over David Ferrer at the ATP Tour Finals in London on Thursday.Obviously, I wasnt in the room when everything went down because its at the board level, at the CEO level. What I can tell you is I will investigate and make sure that the decision theyve taken is, indeed, the right one.If its not, then obviously we need to talk about it and what we can do in the future. Its an important issue.Former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, the Czech fifth seed at the Tour Finals, also took issue with the ATPs decision when asked about the situation earlier in the week.Thats what we are all looking for. If there is someone who is able to increase it, bring something more to us players, then I dont see any reason why someone could be saying, No, its not good idea, Berdych said.I dont see any reason why there should be a problem with that. Thats probably the goal of all of us. I mean, if there is someone who is able to do it, why to say no?
Inter Milan, Lyon advance in Europa League Posted: Inter Milan and Lyon were among the six teams to qualify for the Europa Leagues knockout stage on Thursday but defending champion Atletico Madrid was made to wait after its 16-match winning run in European competition was ended.Liverpools qualification hopes took a dive by losing 1-0 at Anzhi Makhachkala while Edinson Cavani produced the individual performance of the round, scoring all four of Napolis goal in a 4-2 win over Dnipro.Lyon ensured a top-two finish in Group I by winning 3-2 at 2012 runner-up Athletic Bilbao, which now risks elimination.Inter Milan joined Rubin Kazan in progressing from Group H with two games to spare by easing past Partizan Belgrade 3-1. Bayer Leverkusen, Metalist Kharkiv and Hannover are also through but Atletico lost 2-0 at Academica in Group B.
Liverpool, Atletico Madrid lose in Europa League Posted: Liverpool lost 1-0 at wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday to leave Group A up for grabs, while reigning champion Atletico Madrid missed a chance to qualify with two games to spare.Lacina Traore grabbed a 45th-minute winner for Anzhi, which climbed above Liverpool to the top of the group after four games. Young Boys 3-2 surprise victory at Udinese means all four teams can still reach the knockout stage.Atleticos perfect start to Group B, as well as a 16-game winning run in European competition, was ended with a 2-0 defeat at Portuguese team Academica, leaving the holders level on points with Viktoria Plzen a 4-0 winner over eliminated Hapoel Tel Aviv.Newcastle stayed top of Group D by drawing 2-2 at Club Bruges while Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani scored all four goals for Napoli in a 4-2 win over Group F leader Dnipro, reviving the Italian sides stuttering campaign.Fenerbahce and Steaua Bucharest are both five points clear in their groups after a third win in four games but still arent guaranteed to advance. Fenerbahce beat AEL Limassol 2-0 in Group C, where Marseille drew 2-2 with BorussiaMoenchengladbach to leave both teams on five points, and Steaua is in charge of Group E after defeating Molde 2-1 away.Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers again kept faith with his squads fringe players for the trip to Anzhi, which is managed by Dutch coaching great Guus Hiddink and included Cameroon striker Samuel Etoo in its lineup. The English team, which has been crowned European champions five times, held its own throughout but was undone by a great piece of skill by lanky striker Traore, who lifted the ball over his marker before lobbing goalkeeper Brad Jones from outside the area. Some of the young players were terrific and we are disappointed not to have got something from it, said Rodgers, who left Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard out of the squad ahead of Sundays match at Chelsea in the Premier League.Liverpool and Anzhi can both qualify for the knockout stage from what is proving to be the toughest of all 12 groups by beating Young Boys and Udinese, respectively, at home in two weeks time.Atletico should also go through in the next matchday as it hosts Hapoel but was sunk on Thursday by a brace from Wilson Eduardo, earning Academica a first European victory since 1969. The visitors were without their star striker Radamel Falcao.
