Kaira urges judiciary to keep away from political affairs

Delimitation: solution or further polarisation?

KARACHI, Nov 30: The recent orders by the Supreme Court of Pakistan calling for fresh electoral delimitations as a recipe to control crime and violence in Karachi appear to be based on widely-held perception that mafias and groups were controlling organised crime and large parts of the city. The ones espousing the above perception recommend de-polarisation of the city through removal of flash points and ethnic fault lines causing death and destruction.

The immediate questions that come to mind are: is fresh delimitation possible without a new census? And can such a move make any real difference in Karachi’s electoral politics?

‘Mysterious objects’ were parts of Hatf missile: ISPR

ISLAMABAD, Nov 30: The mysterious wreckage that fell on some villages in Dadu district of Sindh on Wednesday night belonged to Hatf-V (Ghauri) missile, tested by the Army’s Strategic Force Command at the conclusion of its field exercises.

“The metallic objects found in a remote area of Dadu were part of the motor body which separated from the missile as planned and within the safety corridor,” a military spokesman said...

Increase in salary of govt employees in the doldrums

ISLAMABAD, Nov 30: An initiative by the federal government to increase salaries of civil servants before coming elections is unlikely to materialise owing to opposition from provincial governments which want increased expenditure on public welfare schemes to woo the larger number of voters, instead of permanently increasing their salary budgets.

A senior government official told Dawn on Friday that the pay and pension committee headed by former governor of State Bank Dr Ishrat Hussain had asked the regulation wing of the ministry of finance to work out a salary adjustment formula with ‘zero budgetary impact’ through merger of allowances in the basic salary and rationalisation of double and triple salaries being paid to officers working at influential institutions...

ECP decision on dual nationality next week

ISLAMABAD, Nov 30: With the deadline set by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for lawmakers to submit declarations on dual nationality expiring on Friday, the ECP is set to decide next week the fate of those who did not submit the required documents.

Former Indian premier Gujral dies at 93

NEW DELHI, Nov 30: Former Indian prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, lauded and reviled as a friend of Pakistan, died in a private hospital in the neighbourhood of Delhi on Friday following complications from a lung ailment. He was 93.

Press Trust of India said Mr Gujral passed away at 3.27pm after a multi-organ failure. He was admitted to a hospital in Gurgaon on November 19 with a lung infection...
