Blast in Karachi bus; six killed

KARACHI, Dec 29: A powerful explosion inside an inter-city bus near Karachi’s Cantonment Railway Station on Saturday killed at least six people and left at least 50 others, including women and children, injured.

21 kidnapped Levies men found dead

PESHAWAR, Dec 29: The Taliban have shot dead 21 Levies personnel who were kidnapped three days ago from Frontier Region Peshawar, officials said on Sunday.

“We found 21 bullet-riddled bodies of security personnel a short while ago in an uninhabited area,” local government official Naveed Akbar told AFP.

4 policemen shot dead in Quetta

QUETTA, Dec 29: Four policemen were shot dead in Satellite Town area of the city on Saturday night, DIG (investigation) Hamid Shakeel said.

A police patrol was on its way when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on their vehicle, he said, adding three personnel died on the spot and another was injured.

Democracy cannot be derailed, says Raja

KARACHI, Dec 29: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday announced categorically that the general election would be held on time in accordance with the Constitution in a fair, free and transparent manner.

“No one can derail democracy now and if anyone tried to create obstacle in the way of timely election he would have to face the wrath of the nation,” he warned.

YouTube unblocked, but only briefly

ISLAMABAD, Dec 29: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority shut down YouTube again on Saturday evening after opening the video-sharing website for about two hours.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT) directed the authority, which overlooks operations of all internet service providers in the country, to unblock the second most accessed website at 2:35pm. But Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf issued directives to the ministry to block the website again. It was blocked before 4:30pm.

Kayani urges PN officers to keep track of security threats

“You must keep yourself abreast in a fast evolving world where technology drives doctrines and thinking. Take out time for studies, reflection and discussion,” a statement quoted the Chief of Army Staff as telling the officers joining the navy.

Cellphone service ban on New Year eve sought

KARACHI, Dec 29: The Sindh police want a ban placed on mobile phone service and pillion riding on the eve of New Year for security reasons, according to an official.

“Under a security plan for Dec 31, the Sindh home department has been requested to ban pillion riding for 12 hours — starting from 5pm,” said SSP Imran Shaukat, the Sindh police spokesman.

Policewomen seek quota at academy

ISLAMABAD, Dec 29: Seven Pakistani policewomen visiting the United States on invitation of the State Department have urged the parliament to set aside ten per cent of slots in the Police Academy for women and members of minority communities.

Taking part in a debate during their visit to the US Institute of Peace, the seven officers said that policewomen in Pakistan were discriminated against and generally lacked access to training and technology, said a press release on Saturday.
