Karachi delimitation not possible: CEC

KARACHI, Jan 22: Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim categorically stated on Tuesday that delimitation of constituencies in Karachi before general elections was not possible and pointed out that the absence of fresh census might make it impossible to implement the Supreme Court order in this regard.

But, he was confident that the issue would not lead to a delay in elections which, he said, would be the ‘most crucial polls in Pakistan’s history and would set the future course of democracy’. He reiterated that the elections would be fair, free and transparent...

LHC offers Zardari way out of contempt proceedings

LAHORE, Jan 22: The Lahore High Court called on Tuesday for an assurance from President Asif Ali Zardari to voluntarily quit political activities in the Presidency in accordance with its last year’s judgment and offered that in return proceedings on a contempt petition against him would be discharged.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial asked Advocate Wasim Sajjad, the counsel of the federation, to come up with a clear stance of the president by Feb 6 about implementation of the May 12 judgment against him for his political activities and holding dual office (PPP co-chairperson)...

NAB prosecutor wilted under pressure

ISLAMABAD, Jan 22: Another senior official of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) -- Additional Prosecutor General (Accountability) Fawzi Ali -- came under pressure and suffered a heart attack soon after attending a hearing on the rental power projects (RPP) case in the Supreme Court on Jan 11, Dawn has learnt.

“Mr Ali, 53, was admitted to PIMS’s CCU on Jan 11 with acute chest pain. He was diagnosed as a case of acute coronary syndrome. He needs angioplasty and one drug eluting stent. Total cost of his procedure, including hospital fee and other charges, is Rs183,000,” said a medical report of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PMIS) Hospital...

10 Hindu extremists linked to terrorism
