Commission proposes Bhakkar, Mianwali as parts of ‘Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab’: One-third of Punjab to make new province

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: A parliamentary commission approved on Saturday the draft of a constitutional amendment bill seeking creation of a new province to be called ‘Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab’, comprising three southern divisions and two western districts of Punjab.

The proposed province will comprise nearly one-third of the present Punjab in three respects — the number of districts and the number of seats in National Assembly as well as the present provincial legislature.

PML-N plans march to ECP

LAHORE, Jan 26: Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, has said that free and fair elections will remain an elusive dream unless the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is given a free hand to carry out the task.

Talking to reporters at the residence of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in Raiwind on Saturday, Chaudhry Nisar said: “We will stage a march from Parliament House to the ECP office to demand empowerment of the commission (to enable it to accomplish its task without any pressure).”

Faisal’s death: murder case registered

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: A murder case has been registered over the death of Kamran Faisal, the National Accountability Bureau’s Assistant Director, after the Supreme Court intervened in the matter.

The case was registered on a complaint lodged by the NAB Additional Director (Coordination), Noman Aslam.

Six pro-govt peace force personnel killed

QUETTA, Jan 26: Militants killed six personnel of a pro-government tribal peace force in the Dalbar-Mat area of Dera Bugti district on Saturday.

Official sources said that a group of armed militants attacked a checkpost of the tribal peace force, killed one man and kidnapped five others along with their weapons.

Talks with India on Wullar Barrage put off

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: Two-day Pakistan-India talks on Wullar Barrage have been postponed amid renewed tensions between the two countries over ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC).

The water secretaries of the two countries were to meet on Jan 28-29 to discuss the dispute over Wullar Barrage/Tulbul Navigation Project.

35 militants killed in Tirah clashes

LANDI KOTAL, Jan 26: A Taliban attack on an opponent group left 35 militants dead and several others injured in the Tirah valley of Khyber Agency.

Sources in the area said that fierce clashes erupted after the Tariq Afridi group of Taliban launched an attack against pro-government Ansarul Islam (AI) in Bagh-Maidan area on Friday.

Malik invokes Islam in offer to Taliban

Ephedrine case: defiant ANF official transferred

RAWALPINDI, Jan 26: A brigadier who held the Karachi Directorate of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) responsible for rescuing Mohammad Hanif Abbasi, a member of the National Assembly belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, in the ephedrine case has been transferred from the Rawalpindi directorate, where he was serving as force commander, to Mangla Cantonment.

Sources in the ANF told Dawn that Brig Faheem Khan was under pressure by his high-ups for the past few months over the ephedrine case as there were certain differences between him and the director general of ANF, Major General Malik Zafar Iqbal.

Islamabad to send team in Feb: Delhi approves questioning of four witnesses

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: After considerable delay, the Indian government has finally allowed the cross-examination of its four officials by defence counsel of seven Pakistani suspects of Mumbai attacks and asked the authorities here to send over their panel by middle of February for the purpose.

Sources in the prosecuting agency concerned — the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) — told Dawn that the breakthrough was achieved in December when an Indian delegation visited Pakistan and held talks with senior law officers and government functionaries here. Before agreeing to the cross-examination of their officials, the delegation discussed the admissibility in the Pakistani courts of the statements made by Indian witnesses, the sources added.

Legal hitches may hinder Qadri accord implementation

ISLAMABAD, Jan 26: Legal hitches are set to obstruct implementation of the agreement signed by the government with Dr Tahirul Qadri recently, it is learnt.

As per the agreement, the National Assembly is to be dissolved any time before March 16 to allow holding of elections within 90 days and one month should be given for scrutiny of nomination papers.
