ECP meeting today By Our Staff Reporter ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will meet here on Saturday to take a decision on the name of caretaker prime minister. An official told Dawn that Chief Election Commissioner (retired) Justice Fakharuddin G. Ebrahim would preside over the crucial meeting. Under the law, the ECP is required to take a decision in two days, with the deadline expiring on the night between March 24 and 25. In case of difference of opinion, the majority view will prevail....

Commission issues May 11 election schedule By Iftikhar A. Khan ISLAMABAD, March 22: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Friday schedule for the general elections. According to the slightly amended version of the draft earlier prepared by the ECP, returning officers will issue public notices about poll dates on March 23, instead of March 24. Nomination papers will be received from candidates from March 24 to 29 and scrutiny of papers will be held from March 30 to April 5, instead of March 31 to April 6. ...

India claims foiling terrorism plot NEW DELHI, March 22: Indian police said on Friday they had arrested a militant who was allegedly planning to carry out suicide attacks in New Delhi. S.N. Srivastava, the chief of an anti-terrorism unit, identified the suspect as Syed Liaqat Shah from India-held Kashmir who he alleged had come from Pakistan to Nepal on a Pakistani passport. “He was instructed to recruit people, choose targets and organise suicide attacks,” Mr Srivastava told a news conference. ...
Move infuriates Altaf By Our Staff Reporter KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has termed the delimitation of 11 constituencies of provincial and national assemblies in Karachi a violation of law and the constitution and said his party would challenge the move by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the superior judiciary. Addressing a party meeting in Karachi on phone from London on Friday, Mr Hussain asked constitutional and legal experts to tell him whether changes could be made in electoral constituencies after the announcement of the election schedule and the experts replied in the negative, according to an MQM press release...
