Imran hits a big six

Six security men killed in suicide attack

MIRAMSHAH, March 23: Six security personnel, among them an engineer of the Frontier Works Organisation, were killed and at least 10 others injured when a suicide bomber attacked a checkpost in North Waziristan tribal region on Saturday evening.

Officials said the suicide bomber on board a water tanker rammed his vehicle into the Eisha checkpost on the Bannu-Miramshah road near Mirali.

ISLAMABAD, March 23: Some of the politicians’ traits seem to have rubbed off on the judges. A daylong meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday left the retired judges undecided on the name of the caretaker prime minister.

With two votes each for two of the nominees, the vote of the fifth member — retired Justice Roshan Essani from Sindh — is likely to clinch the issue.

PPP speaks out against PML-N nominees in letter to ECP

ISLAMABAD, March 23: The government members of the bipartisan parliamentary committee, which had failed to agree on a name for the caretaker prime minister, sent a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday in which they glorified the PPP’s nominees and vilified the opposition’s.

The PPP move invited wrath of the PML-N, which termed it an attempt to pressure the ECP at a time when a decision is barely 24 hours away.

Musharraf admits he faces uncertain future

Altaf says he has no confidence in ECP

KARACHI, March 23: Expressing no-confidence in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Saturday the delimitation of 11 constituencies in Karachi was a “conspiracy to divide the vote bank” of his party.

According to an MQM statement, Mr Hussain declared that workers and supporters of his party would not allow the conspiracy to succeed.

27 die in accident

SHEIKHUPURA, March 23: Twenty-seven people were killed and 30 others injured early on Saturday when an crowded bus turned over after hitting an electricity pole on the Faisalabad Road near Kharianwala, some 10km from here.

Sources said there were over 100 passengers in the 72-seat bus going from Faisalabad to Sialkot. Some stood on the aisle and others were on the roof.
