UN chief leads tributes to Venezuela's Chavez Posted: UNITED NATIONS (AP) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon led tributes Wednesday to the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday, calling him a leader who made a difference in the world.Diplomats observed a moment of silent at a U.N. General Assembly meeting before the tributes by Ban, General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic, representatives of all regional groups, and Venezuelas foreign minister.Chavez, who died of cancer on March 5 at the age of 58, was beloved among many poor Venezuelans for the myriad of social programs he enacted using his countrys oil wealth. Critics accused him of eroding Venezuelas democracy by accumulating power into his own hands and intimidating opponents.Ban praised Chavezs sense of solidarity with the most vulnerable and his commitment to improve the life of the most underprivileged.Perhaps President Chavez will be best remembered for his ability to connect at a human level with the most vulnerable and give voice to their aspirations, he said.Ban said that perhaps Chavez most notable achievement was his assistance to Haiti after the devastating earthquake in 2010. He also cited Chavez contribution to peace talks between the government and rebels in Colombia.Chavez first spoke at the General Assembly in 1999, soon after he came to power, and the secretary-general recalled his wish that one day in the near future it would be possible to proclaim that peace, democracy and development have triumphed.Let us honor the legacy of president Chavez by renewing our pledge to work toward these noble goals, Ban said.Jeremic said history will remember the charismatic Chavez for his policies that lowered Venezuelas poverty levels.
Bayern reaches CL quarters despite 2-0 loss Posted: MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich barely staved off an improbable comeback Wednesday, eliminating Arsenal from the Champions League despite a 2-0 loss at home to leave England without a team in the quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years.Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal and early lead in the third minute and Laurent Koscielny added the second in the 86th but Arsenal remained one goal away from erasing its 3-1 deficit from the first leg. With the series level 3-3 on aggregate, Bayern advanced to the quarterfinals on the away goals rule.Bayern is a four-time winner of the competition and was runner-up twice in the last three seasons. In the second match Wednesday, Malaga beat Porto 2-0 to reach the last eight 2-1 on aggregate.Arsenals players had said before the game they needed a miracle to advance, and after the early goal it looked like they might just get one.Tomas Rosicky fed Theo Walcott on the right and the winger found space when David Alaba slipped on the wet grass.Walcott raced into the penalty area and sent a hard, low ball through the legs of Dante and across the goal for Giroud to drive it into the roof of the net from a couple of meters (yards) out. That made for a nervous evening for the home crowd, although Bayern gradually took control of the game and didnt allow any more dangerous chances for the rest of the half. The hosts then dominated much of the second half but were limited mostly to long-range attempts.Arsenal then added more suspense into the match by netting the second.Santi Cazorla sent in a corner and Koscielny beat Javi Martinez to the header and sent the ball low inside the right post.Arsenal couldnt seriously threaten again, though, as Bayern hung on to its edge from the first leg.
Malaga through to Champions League quarter-finals Posted: MALAGA (AFP) - Malaga became the third Spanish team to reach this years Champions League quarterfinals by beating 10-man Porto 2-0 on Wednesday to overturn a first-leg deficit.Porto led 1-0 from the first leg but Malagas 20-year-old forward Francisco Isco Alarcon leveled the series in the 43rd minute by scoring with a high, curling shot that beat goalkeeper Helton and went into the far top corner.Roque Santa Cruz got the decisive second when he rose to head a corner into the far post in the 77th.Portos Steven Defour was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Joaquin Sanchez in the 49th minute.
Anderson books quarter-final berth at Indian Wells Posted: INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - South Africas Kevin Anderson booked a quarter-final berth at Indian Wells on Wednesday with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over 13th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon.Anderson, one of three unseeded players remaining in the mens field of the combined ATP Masters and WTA tournament, reached the quarter-finals of an elite Masters event for the second time.Anderson, who had surgery in January to remove bone chips from his right elbow, had already ousted world No. 4 David Ferrer in the second round. In the quarter-finals, hell face either sixth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych or 10th-seeded Richard Gasquet of France.Wednesdays fourth-round matches saw the big four of mens tennis in action.World No. 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic faced American Sam Querrey -- the last man to beat the Serbian star back on October 31.Since then Djokovic has put together a 20-match winning streak and won a fourth career Australian Open title as well as the ATP title in Dubai.Djokovic didnt attach much importance to the fact that Querrey beat him in his opening match at the Paris Masters last year, noting that the indoor surface was very different from the conditions they would encounter on the hard courts of the California desert.I won four, times against him, said Djokovic, who indeed leads their head-to-head 4-1. Yes, he has won the last encounter indoors -- different circumstances and conditions.I mean, well play in front of his crowd and he has a big serve and big game and he can come up with the goods when needed, Djokovic added, noting that against such a dangerous server he couldnt afford to start as slowly as he did in a 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 third-round victory over Belgian Grigor Dimitrov.Defending champion and second seed Roger Federer will battle fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka for a quarter-final spot.Federer, a four-time winner of the Indian Wells title, is bidding for his first tournament win of 2013 having been denied in Rotterdam and Dubai.World No. 3 Andy Murray faces unseeded Argentinian Carlos Berlocq while Rafael Nadal, ranked fifth in the world as he continues his return from a seven-month injury absence faces a potentially tricky fourth-round match against qualifier Ernests Gulbis. The 24-year-old Latvian is on a hot streak. He became the first qualifier to win an ATP title this year when he triumphed at Delray Beach prior to Indian Wells.

Marc Marquez makes fastest start at 'fun' Austin Posted: TEXAS: MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez set the fastest lap time on day one of the private Honda/Yamaha test at the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.Riding his Repsol Honda RC213V for the eleventh time, the new venue put Marquez on a more even footing relative to his experienced MotoGP rivals. As on Austins F1 race debut, late last year, the circuit was initially very slippery, with lap times in the 2m 12s range. However as the track became cleaner and temperatures increased, times steadily dropped.Moto2 champion Marquez eventually ruled the timesheet with a 2m 4.619s, on lap 54 of 55. That put the young Spaniard 0.428s clear of team-mate and next quickest rider Dani Pedrosa. Marquez and Pedrosa have tested together for a total of eight days, but Tuesday marked the first time that 20-year-old Marquez has out-paced last years title runner-up.Yamahas world champion Jorge Lorenzo was 0.672s behind Marquez, with LCR Hondas Stefan Bradl (1.434s) and Lorenzos team-mate Valentino Rossi (1.888s) in fourth and fifth.

World's largest space observatory opens in Chile Posted: LLANO CHAJNANTOR (AFP) - What is thought to be the worlds largest ground-based observatory opened Wednesday in northern Chile, wielding unprecedented power to peer into the remotest regions of the universe. The ALMA space observatory was inaugurated here on a desert plateau some 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level, at a ceremony attended by President Sebastian Pinera and other dignitaries. Here in this desert, the driest in the world, it is a great privilege to inaugurate the observatory, Pinera said.Calling it the worlds most powerful, he said the observatory will make a significant contribution to humanity, enable a better understanding of the universe in which we live, and perhaps help us discover life beyond Earth.ALMA is a huge telescope 16 kilometers (10 miles) in diameter, said the facilitys director Thijs de Graauw, as it was declared officially opened.Amid excited applause, 59 of the 66 antennas slowly began to rotate and point toward the interior of the universe. By October, all the antennas will be fully installed and operational.Gianni Marconi, an astronomer at the massive ground array of telescopes, recently proudly proclaimed to AFP that ALMA is the largest observatory that has ever been built.ALMA -- short for the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array, an acronym which means soul in Spanish -- is a joint effort among North American, European and Asian agencies. The observatory is located near Pedro de Atacama, a desert town popular with tourists. With almost no humidity or vegetation to block its view of the heavens, ALMAs antennas range in diameter from seven meters (23 feet) to 12 meters (39 feet.)There is virtually no water vapor, there is just so little that whatever light is emitted from a heavenly body, galaxy or star, it gets here with no interference Marconi said. When scientists who homed in on this site for ALMA said they were looking for a place that had a high altitude, low humidity, sunny weather and fairly easy logistical access.De Graauw told AFP recently that ALMAs ultra-precise equipment would be used to seek answers to big questions -- star formation, the birth of planets and how the system was created after the Big Bang.Unlike optical or infrared telescopes, ALMA can capture the faint glow and gas present in the formation of the first stars, galaxies and planets in an extremely cold region of the universe. It is a revolution in the history of the universe in the realm of millimetric and sub-millimetric waves, which can look through clouds of dust and focus on the formation of stars themselves, De Graauw added.Telescopes cannot see what is happening inside these clouds. With ALMA, we can. And that is like opening a new window.
Oil prices fall on demand worries Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Wednesday after another build in US crude inventories and a lowered key oil demand forecast took the shine off better-than-expected US retail sales.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for April delivery, closed essentially flat at $92.52 a barrel, down two cents from Tuesday's closing level.Brent North Sea crude for April dropped $1.13 to settle at $108.52 a barrel in London trade. The New York session began sharply higher after official data showed US retail sales picked up 1.1 percent in February, the biggest gain in five months and more than double expectations, though higher gasoline prices accounted for an important part of the surge.Even so, it sparked hopes of continuing strong consumer spending in the US economy. That helped a lot with the market, said Bill Baruch of iiTrader.com.But the benchmark New York contract began to fall after the US Department of Energy's weekly report showed another increase in crude inventories, by 2.6 million barrels, in the week ended March 8.A downbeat demand forecast also weighed on market sentiment. The International Energy Agency (IEA) lowered its global forecast for growth in world oil demand for the second straight month, citing the effects of uncertainty from the US budget talks, sluggish Chinese business activity and unemployment in Europe. The IEA estimated that demand for oil would total 90.6 million barrels per day this year, a cut of 60,000 barrels from its forecast in February. The macroeconomic environment underpinning oil demand, as of yet, shows little sign of short-term improvement, it said in a report.
Dollar gets lift from strong retail sales report Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The dollar rose against other major currencies on Wednesday following an unexpectedly strong increase in U.S. retail sales last month.Americans spent at the fastest pace in five months in February, lifting retail sales 1.1 percent, despite higher payroll taxes. The data was the latest in a series of positive U.S. economic reports, indicating a strengthening recovery. The euro fell to $1.2961 Wednesday, versus $1.3026 late Tuesday. Earlier, the 17-nation currency dropped to a new low for the year against the dollar, hitting $1.2922. A relatively weak Italian bond auction helped push the euro lower, along with general concerns about the sluggish economies of Europe. The British pound regained some of the ground it lost against the dollar earlier in the week. The pound was worth $1.4927, up from $1.4909 late Tuesday. The dollar edged up to 96.04 Japanese yen from 95.93 yen late Tuesday. The yen has been weak because traders expect the new head of the Bank of Japan to ease monetary policy, but comments from opposition leaders appear to indicate his confirmation is not yet secured. The dollar rose to 0.9526 Swiss franc from 0.9473 Swiss franc late Tuesday, and to 1.0272 Canadian dollar from 1.0261 Canadian dollar.
