Five children dead in Syrian town bombardment

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Syrian regime forces pounded the rebel-held town of Binesh near the Turkish border killing a woman and five children, and also rained shells on parts of Damascus on Saturday, a watchdog said.Activists said the six people killed in Binesh were a woman and her five children, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights could not immediately confirm they were from the same family. In March 2012, dozens of residents fled Binesh, in the northwestern province of Idlib, when shells slammed into the town as regime troops advanced in a bid to expel rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assads regime. The Observatory said shells hit Binesh on Saturday, killing the woman and the children, as clashes broke out around the nearby town of Maaret al-Numan which rebels captured in October 2012.At least 55 people were killed nationwide in Syria on Saturday, including 22 civilians, said the Observatory, which collects information from a network of representatives and medics on the ground. On Friday, the day when the conflict entered its third year, at least 216 people were killed in violence across the country -- one of the highest figures for several weeks, the Observatory said.Regime forces also pounded parts of Damascus on Friday night, sending residents fleeing from the northern Barzeh district, where snipers were deployed, the watchdog said.Shells also slammed into the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmuk along with the Jubar, Barzeh and Qaboon neighbourhoods of Damascus on Saturday, it said. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which helps Palestinian refugees, said a member of its teaching staff had been killed in Khan Eshieh camp, southwest of Damascus.Nasri Khalil Hasan was killed by shrapnel that hit him as he fled his home under artillery fire, UNRWA said, adding that Hasan was the sixth member of its staff in Syria to be killed in the conflict.Elsewhere, fighting raged in the northern city of Aleppo, with at least 12 rebels reported killed in clashes with regime troops near the international airport.

FHockey: Australia to meet Malaysia in final

Posted:

IPOH (AFP) - World Champions Australia will contest hosts Malaysia in the final Sunday of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup after edging out the tournaments defending champions New Zealand.Australia booked their place with a 3-2 win over the Kiwis Saturday, while the Malaysians finished their preliminary round with a 2-2 draw with India. It will be the eighth final appearance for the Australians, who have made good on all but two of those chances, while the Malaysians, who have never won, will play in their fourth cup final. Both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the preliminary round match of the cups 22nd edition, and Australian assistant coach Graham Reid predicted a tough final considering the atmosphere, which favours the home team. But we are looking forward to it. There is no question that it will be a high quality match... The Malaysians have a well-balanced side, he said.Australia overcame a poor first half display to beat the Kiwis, whose loss automatically propelled Malaysia into the final. The Kiwis dominated the first half as the world number two looked jaded, squandering five penalty corners and against the run of play allowed their neighbours to take the lead through Jacob Smith. But it was a disastrous start for the Kiwis in the second half when they gave away two soft goals with Jacob Whetton scoring twice in a one-minute spell from close range.Matt Gohdes added the third off a field attempt to steer them to safety so even Cory Bennetts goal for New Zealand couldnt shake them.Meanwhile, Malaysia scored both their goals through Faizal Saari, while India replied through Mandeep Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh.India was coasting to a 2-1 win when Malaysia earned a last-minute penalty stroke. Faizal scored the equaliser, which sends India to a play-off for fifth place against Pakistan.Indias archrival was held to a 2-2 draw by South Korea in a match that proved scrappy and listless. The draw took South Korea, ahead of the Pakistanis on goal difference, to a third placing play off with New Zealand.Salman Hussain scored the opening goal for Pakistan followed by Abdul Haseem Khan in the second half. The Koreans scored their first goal through Hyun Hye-Sung, while an own goal by Muhammad Irfan gave them the second.

Nadal beats Berdych to reach Indian Wells final

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AP) - Rafael Nadal rallied to beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday and reach his fourth ATP Tour final in as many events.Off to the best start of his career, Nadal improved to 16-1 including 13 wins in a row on the year, having won two clay-court titles and been runner-up in another since returning from a left knee injury that idled him for seven months. Its very, very difficult to imagine something like this. But here we are today, and very happy about all what happened the last month, especially last three weeks, said Nadal, who beat No. 2 Roger Federer in straight sets in the quarterfinals.I dont have nothing to lose after seven months. I did much more than what I dreamed. It was Nadals 12th straight win over Berdych, including seven consecutive on hard courts. Nadal will be seeking his third Indian Wells title in Sundays final, where hell play either top-ranked Novak Djokovic or No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro, who met in the other semi.No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova and No. 8 Caroline Wozniacki will play for the womens title on Sunday. He looks strong again, Berdych said of Nadal, whose leg is taped just below his left knee. He still play very aggressive, and what he was missing in his first matches when he come back after the injury was maybe a bit of confidence in his game, but definitely not today and not anymore.Berdych came in with 18 match wins second-most on tour this year and was trying to make the final of three tournaments in a row for the first time in his career.Berdych got broken at 5-all in the second set when he lost an easy smash in the sun, sending it wide.Trailing 6-5, the sixth-seeded Czech held three break points, but couldnt convert. Twice Nadal came up with big serves and then Berdych committed an unforced error.Berdychs netted forehand set up Nadals first match point, but the fifth-seeded Spaniard pulled a forehand wide for deuce.Berdych sent a backhand into the net for Nadals second match point, and he closed out the nearly 2-hour match in unseasonably hot temperatures when Berdych netted another backhand.I was very nervous at the end of the match to close the match and was lucky that my serve worked amazing in the last game in important moments, he said. Victories like today, like the other day, helps you a lot for the confidence and to remember all the things that you have to do in every moment.Nadal had 16 winners and 25 unforced errors but he saved 3 of 4 break points, getting broken in the eighth game on a double fault to give Berdych a 5-3 lead. Nadal then won the final three games of the match. When it was 5-3 since that time I serve only one first serve and he serve only one second serve, Berdych said. Actually, that was the difference.

Man United beat Reading 1-0 to go 15 points clear

MANCHESTER (AP) - Wayne Rooney sent Manchester United 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday by scoring in a 1-0 victory over Reading. The win, while far from convincing, effectively ends the title race as it came after second-place Manchester City lost 2-0 at Everton.Rooney claimed his 16th goal of the season in the 21st minute with a shot that flicked off Alex Pearce. There are nine games remaining for United to wrap up a record-extending 20th English title.Reading is only off the bottom of the standings because it has out-scored bottom-place Queens Park Rangers, but it is seven points from safety.Following the dismissal of Brian McDermott earlier this week, Eamonn Dolan was in temporary charge of Reading. The focus at Old Trafford, though, was on Rio Ferdinand days after he was called back into the England squad after an absence of nearly two years. And the 34-year-old defender rolled back the years to turn in another impressive performance, which included claiming the assist for Rooneys winner but also showing an assuredness in possession. He created Uniteds first chance for a start with a crossfield pass to Ashley Young, which the winger controlled on the edge of the area before drilling a cross-shot just beyond Robin van Persie and the far post.Ferdinands next incursion was the crucial one.Nipping in to intercept Garath McClearys poor pass, Ferdinand advanced into the open space and nipped round a static Mikele Leigertwood before feeding Rooney just to his left. The striker took aim and once his shot flicked off Pearce, goalkeeper Stuart Taylor had no chance of keeping it out.Either side of Rooneys goal, Danny Welbeck went close on a couple of occasions and Robin van Persie tried his luck from 20 yards. These are not the most productive of times for Van Persie, who has now scored only once in his last 10 games.Only once did the visitors truly threaten before the break, when Hal Robson-Kanu let fly with a shot that goalkeeper David de Gea would not have reached if it had been on target. They should have had a chance to equalize immediately after it though when Nemanja Vidic shoved Adrian Mariappa over inside the box. Reading appealed for what TV replays showed to be a clear foul, but referee Lee Mason was unmoved.

Everton tear Man City's title hopes to shreds

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ten-man Everton sounded a probable death knell on Manchester Citys title defence with a hard-fought 2-0 win over the Premier League champions at Goodison Park on Saturday.Despite the second-half dismissal of Steven Pienaar, Everton dug deep for a victory that means Manchester United can go 15 points clear at the top of the table by winning at home to Reading later.Leon Osman made the breakthrough for the hosts in the 32nd minute, meeting Seamus Colemans lay-off with a swerving shot from 25 yards that deceived goalkeeper Joe Hart and flew into the top-left corner. The momentum tilted in Citys favour with half an hour to play when Pienaar was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a shin-high foul on Javi Garcia. However, Evertons second-choice goalkeeper Jan Mucha kept the visitors at bay, producing fine saves to thwart Carlos Tevez, James Milner and Pablo Zabaleta.City were also denied a clear penalty in the 86th minute when referee Lee Probert awarded the visitors a free-kick for a hand-ball by Marouane Fellaini that occured inside the 18-yard box.Substitute Nikica Jelavic curled in Evertons second goal in injury time to seal a win that lifted David Moyes side to fifth place and banished memories of last weekends abject loss to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

Council accused of 'murdering' punctuation marks

Posted:

LONDON (Web Desk) - When council officers in a rural English district took the curious decision to do away with the apostrophe – because it caused “confusion” - they may have believed that the humble punctuation mark was too small and insignificant for anyone to care. But they counted without the punctilious devotees of traditional grammar who came to its aid – and accused them of nothing short of “murder”.The move was branded “appalling, disgusting and pointless”, with one critic saying the absence of the marks made her “shudder”.Some even suggested that it could represent a creeping threat that might even result in the endangerment of those grammatical stalwarts, the comma and the capital letter.Officials at Mid Devon council, ever alert to the perils of everyday life and eager to introduce new regulations, have proposed abolishing apostrophes from street names to “avoid potential confusion”.A “risk assessment” had concluded that a policy on street names ought to be adopted, which formalised a long-standing practice in the district that they did not have apostrophes.“If we didn’t have a clear street name and number policy in place it could lead to inappropriate and confusing street names which could also have adverse consequences in times of emergency,” a spokesman explained. But Steve Jenner, spokesman for the Plain English Campaign, said: “It is as if the council is saying it simply doesn’t fancy apostrophes now.“What if they don’t like commas or full stops or capital letters? There is no need to murder the apostrophe, it is very much needed in the English language.”John Richards, founder and chairman of the Apostrophe Protection Society, said: “It is appalling, disgusting and pointless, they have no regard for the English language.“Throughout the area, teachers are doing their best to teach children grammar and the children have the right to say ‘why bother?’ when the council doesn’t use apostrophes.“The council is just being contemptuous of the English language.“The whole point is absurd and I don’t know why they would do this. Apostrophes are just so easy to learn and are an essential part of the English language.”The council pointed out that only three streets in the district, which has a population of 78,000, currently have them.Beck’s Square and Blundell’s Avenue, both in Tiverton, and St George’s Well, in Cullompton, are not at risk of losing their apostrophes, which were bestowed on them many years ago, and any new signs will maintain the punctuation, the council said.Councillors will vote on the proposal on March 28. It was presented to the authority in a report earlier this week.Mary de Vere Taylor, a proof reader from Ashburton, pointed to the examples of St Andrews Close in the town, and Bakers View in Newton Abbot, already bereft of apostrophes. She said: “It is as if something intrinsic to English education for a long time is now being wiped out because it’s not needed or recognised or people assume they don’t need it.“It does grate very, very deeply and it saddens me that there is probably a generation or two, or maybe three, that is just unaware of the apostrophe or the correct placing of it.“To me there’s something terribly British and terribly reassuring about well-written and well-punctuated writing.“Some may say I should get a life and get out more, but if I got out more and saw place names with no apostrophes where there should be, I shudder to think how I’d react.”Andrew Lacey, communications manager at the council, said: “Our proposed policy on street naming and numbering covers a whole host of practical issues, many of which are aimed at reducing potential confusion over street names.“Although there is no national guidance that stops apostrophes being used, for many years the convention we’ve followed here is for new street names not to be given apostrophes.”The policy may be greeted with alarm by residents of a neighbouring Devon district - but Torridge council said it had no plans to abolish the exclamation mark from the village of Westward Ho
