Pakistan tennis ace Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and his Dutch partner Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, both from Poland, 6-4, 6-1 to lift Miami ATP Masters doubles title.Aisam and Rojer broke the Poles three times and wiped away all three break points they faced to clinch the title in 56 minutes. The two finished in the winners’ circle after rallying from a set down in their first two matches, which included prevailing 14-12 in a match tie-break over Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot in the second round.“I feel ecstatic. We both knew we had to go all out to win a title, especially such a big one. I’ve never had such a big result the first quarter of the year, so it feels great,” said Qureshi. “Every day is a new day. We were six match points down in our second match. Everything turned around. Sometimes you need some luck to win these big tournaments. The tennis gods were on our side this tournament, but we also worked hard.”The Pakistani/Dutch duo captured their third title together, having triumphed in Estoril and Halle last year en route to qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. When asked if they had any special celebration plans, Qureshi said, “I’ve heard so much the past two weeks about Miami but I haven’t been out.”“It’s always nice to be back here. I have a lot of friends and family here,” said Rojer. “If I could win any big tournament, this is right up there. This is pretty much my Grand Slam, so I’m very happy to win it.”Rojer added, “I’m going to make a phone call to the Dutch Davis Cup captain to see if I can arrive a day later, because I would like to properly celebrate our win.”

Pakistan confident of Davis Cup win over New Zealand

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistans Davis Cup coach Mohammad Khalid Saturday said he was confident his team would win against New Zealand in their Oceania Group II match in Myanmar next week.Pakistan have been forced to play their home ties at neutral venues since 2010, due to security fears in the country after gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team bus in March 2009.That terrorist attack led to the suspension of all international sporting activities in Pakistan as teams refused to tour the country.Pakistan requested the International Tennis Federation stage its tie in Myanmar, where Khalid feels grass courts will favour his players.Grass courts suit our players and I am confident that our team will win the tie, Khalid told AFP from Lahore, from where the team will depart on Sunday. The tie will be played from April 5-7 and a win would give Pakistan the chance to play the group semi-final in September against the winners of the other second-round tie between Thailand and the Philippines.Pakistan will be represented by top doubles player Aisam-ul Haq Qureshi, as well as Aqeel Khan, Yasir Khan and Mohammad Abid.Khalid hopes Qureshi continues his latest form, which has seen him through to Saturdays doubles final at the Sony Open in Miami, where he is partnering Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer. He (Qureshi) is playing well and thats a good sign for us, and besides that other players have also prepared well, said Khalid.New Zealand beat Pakistan 3-2 in their last Davis Cup meeting in 2010.

Serena beats Sharapova in Sony Open final

Posted:

KEY BISCAYNE (AP) - Serena Williams broke the Key Biscayne womens record for most titles, and Maria Sharapova set a new standard for futility in finals on Saturday.Williams swept the last 10 games and earned her sixth title in the Sony Open by rallying past Sharapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.Sharapova completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open last year, but shes winless in five Key Biscayne finals. After playing nearly flawless tennis for an hour, she began to miss with her serve, and Williams dominated rallies with her power.Williams has won 11 consecutive matches against Sharapova, whose last victory in the rivalry came in 2004.At 31, the No. 1-ranked Williams became the oldest female champion at Key Biscayne. She won the tournament for the first time since 2008 and surpassed Steffi Graf, a five-time champion.Williams lives two hours up the highway in Palm Beach Gardens and considers the tournament her home event. On Sunday, 2009 champion Andy Murray will play first-time Key Biscayne finalist David Ferrer for the mens title. The womens final began at high noon in sunny, mild weather, and the quality of play matched the conditions in the early going. The aggressive style of both finalists made for slam-bang points, and the occasional long rally had a near-capacity crowd gasping at the ferocity of the strokes.Sharapova built her lead by keeping Williams on the defensive, and she kissed the line with a winner on consecutive points to break for a 3-2 advantage in the second set. Then came the turnaround. Williams began to feast on Sharapovas tentative second serve and broke back at love, then took advantage of two double faults by Sharapova to break again for a 5-3 lead.Sharapova made 80 percent of her first serves early on but finished at 63. Williams converted all seven break-point chances and had a 35-13 advantage in winners.Williams lost only 10 points in the final set and closed out the victory with a service winner, then was hopping, spinning, waving and grinning in jubilation as the crowd roared. She became the first No. 1-seeded woman to win the title since she was champion nine years ago. Shell remain No. 1 and Sharapova No. 2 next week.Sharapova also lost the final in 2005, 06, 11 and 12. Williams other titles came in 2002, 03, 04, 07 and 08.

United beat Sunderland 1-0, maintain title surge

Posted:

SUNDERLAND (AP) - Manchester United relied on a first-half own goal by Titus Bramble to beat Sunderland 1-0 on Saturday, securing a seventh straight Premier League win to inch the runaway leaders closer to a 20th English title.Robin van Persies shot in the 27th minute was heading wide but Bramble stuck out a leg and deflected the ball into the corner of his own net, rewarding United for its early dominance at the Stadium of Light. The visitors, who came into the match holding a 15-point cushion at the top, sat back in the second half but held on relatively comfortably. Only the biggest meltdown in Premier League history would stop them reclaiming the title off second-place Manchester City.United has become the first top-division team in the history of English football to win 25 of its first 30 league games, and it has a real chance of breaking Chelseas record from the 2004-05 season of 95 points from a single campaign. The team has 77 points with eight games left.We are getting closer, United midfielder Michael Carrick said. Its one game less but we still have to go again . We will keep plugging away.United has bad recent memories of playing Sunderland away two seasons ago, a broken sewage pipe left a foul stench in its dressing room while last season, Alex Fergusons team won 1-0 on the final weekend but had the title ripped from them by City in extraordinary, last-gasp circumstances.United will leave the northeast more content this time around, having dominated a lethargic Sunderland side from the start despite Ferguson resting the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra with Mondays FA Cup quarterfinal replay against Chelsea in mind. The only negative was the 32nd-minute withdrawal of Brazilian right back Rafael da Silva because of injury.Van Persies streak without a United goal stretches to eight matches he scored three times in two games for the Netherlands in the international break but he was integral in the only goal here, firing in a shot that deflected first off Phil Bardsley and then more decisively off the outstretched right thigh of Bramble and into the corner. That capped a bright start to the match by Van Persie, who almost doubled the advantage late in the first half when he exchanged passes with the excellent Carrick only to volley just over the bar. With United relying on the counter-attack on the second half, Sunderland perked up and saw more of the ball but rarely threatened David de Geas goal. It was United that came closest to grabbing the games second goal, with Alex Buttner denied by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and Van Persie also denied by the Belgium international after being fed a great chance on a counterattack. This team is just full of winners, said Van Persie, who is likely to win the English title for the first time in his first season with United. Everyone knows what he has to do.The loss left Sunderland just above the relegation zone with seven games remaining, with tough fixtures against Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton coming up. With top scorer Steven Fletcher out for the season because of injury, the team could soon find itself in the bottom three.

Siem extends lead to 4 shots at Hassan II

Posted:

AGADIR (AP) - Marcel Siem of Germany shot a 3-under 69 to extend his lead to four shots after the third round of the Hassan II Trophy on Saturday. The French Open champion made five birdies but was pegged back by a bogey on the first hole and again on No. 17 to move to a 15-under total of 201.I got over a tough start with tough conditions and all the guys just behind me seemed to start really well and almost caught me up, Siem said. I had to hole a few big putts just to stay ahead and then I managed to pull away a little bit. But then 15 and 17 were disappointing because you are really looking to pick up a couple of shots there, but I managed to give one away.Mikko Ilonen of Finland, Englishman David Horsey, and Pablo Larrazabal of Spain were all tied for second on 205.Ilonen is confident he can close the gap in Sundays final round and challenge for victory.I am four back and would rather be a little bit closer, but we have three guys four behind that can catch him, Ilonen said. One of us will have to go really low tomorrow and I think the golf course will allow that. I have made enough birdies and eagles to know I can do it, but I just have to avoid the mistakes.Larrazabal matched Siems score of 69, while Horsey and Ilonen who were tied for second overnight both carded 70.
