PESHAWAR, April 2: Dozens of gunmen attacked a grid station in Shaikh Mohammadi area near here in the small hours of Tuesday and killed at least seven people and kidnapped four others.

ISLAMABAD, April 2: Fourteen members of the caretaker cabinet took oath on Tuesday for 39 days, while one was sent home for being a serving government employee.

The members of the cabinet are: Malik Habib, Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Dr Musaddaq Malik, Arif Nizami, Sohail Wajahat H. Siddique, Shahzada Ahsan Ashraf Sheikh, Maqbool H.H. Rahmatoola, Abdul Malik Kasi, Asadullah Mandokhel, Mir Hassan Dhomki, Dr Sania Nishtar, Feroze Jamal Shah Kakakhel, Dr Younis Soomro and Shahzada Jamal.

PPP cancels April 4 anniversary event

KARACHI/LARKANA, April 2: A tough election schedule and security threats have forced the PPP to cancel a big show of strength in Larkana to launch its election campaign on the occasion of the death anniversary of the party’s founder, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, on Thursday.

Although the Sindh government has declared April 4 as a public holiday, the PPP has changed its programme and now plans to organise a small gathering on the death anniversary in Naudero.

Afghan allegations of construction, reinforcement along border rejected

ISLAMABAD, April 2: The Foreign Office rejected on Tuesday Afghan charges of construction and reinforcement activities along the Durand Line saying Pakistan was only renovating one of its border posts for improving border controls.

Pakistan Army and Afghan National Army have, meanwhile, agreed to hold a border flag meeting to resolve the row over the Pakistani post in Mohmand.

Lawmakers get prison terms in degree, nationality cases

KARACHI, April 2: The issue of fake degrees involving lawmakers took a surprise turn on Tuesday when courts in different parts of the country handed down prison terms ranging from one to nine years along with fine to one former MNA and two former MPAs.

In addition, the seminary qualification of a former MNA was declared invalid by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and, on a different plane, a former MPA got one-year imprisonment in a dual nationality case.

Five-judge bench takes up intra-court appeal: CJ shouldn’t hear contempt case: Bokhari’s counsel

ISLAMABAD, April 2: The counsel for National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman retired Admiral Fasih Bokhari opposed a suggestion on Tuesday that Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should hear a matter in which his son Dr Arsalan Iftikhar is called as a witness.

“Should the chief justice hear the case in which I will call Dr Arsalan as a witness,” Advocate Sardar Latif Khosa argued while pleading an intra-court appeal instituted by Admiral Bokhari before a five-judge bench comprising Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Mian Saqib Nisar, Ejaz Afzal Khan, Muhammad Ather Saeed and Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman.

ECP asked to explain steps taken to cancel SBP appointment

LAHORE, April 2: The Lahore High Court (LHC) directed on Tuesday the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to inform it about steps taken to get the appointment of Ashraf Mehmood Wathra as deputy governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) cancelled.

The order was issued by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah while hearing a petition seeking implementation of articles 62 and 63 of the constitution in order to stop candidates with dubious record from contesting the elections.

Sindh High Court grants protective bail to Amin Fahim

KARACHI, April 2: Former federal commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim was given a 10-day protective bail by the Sindh High Court in the National Insurance Company (NICL) land scam case on Tuesday.

Chief Justice Mushir Alam granted the Rs500,000 bail to the PPP leader.
