US says kit removal from Afghanistan to cost $5-6 bn Posted: KABUL (AFP) - The US operation to remove military hardware and vehicles from Afghanistan as troops withdraw after 12 years of war will cost between five and six billion dollars, officials said Sunday.Among statistics released by the military about the process known as a retrograde was that 25,000 vehicles have been shipped out of Afghanistan in the last year and another 25,000 remain in the country.About 100,000 containers are also still in Afghanistan, and will be used to remove mountains of equipment ranging from fighting gear to fitness machines, furniture and computers. The retrograde from Afghanistan is one of the most challenging military transportation operations in history in terms of scale and complexity, Brigadier General Steven Shapiro said in an email. Our number of vehicles in Afghanistan has dropped by nearly half in the past year.Shapiro, the commanding general of 1st Theater Sustainment Command, said decisions were being made on what equipment was left for the Afghan army and police to take on the fight against Taliban insurgents.Ground commanders are able to nominate this equipment as they assess the needs and maintenance capabilities of their Afghan partners and numbers will vary, he said. The figures of five to six billion dollars corresponds to the total cost of retrograde from 2012 through 2014, and theyre constantly being reevaluated. Most of the hardware will be flown out of land-locked Afghanistan or taken by road to the Pakistani port of Karachi, though the route has been hit by militant attacks and was temporarily closed by spats between Washington and Islamabad. |
Jordan king, Abbas ink deal to 'defend' Jerusalem Posted: AMMAN (AFP) - Jordans King Abdullah II and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas signed on Sunday an agreement confirming their common goal to defending Jerusalem and its sacred sites against attempts to Judaise the Holy City.A statement by the palace said the deal confirms Jordans historic role as custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, particularly the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound, and outlines coordination between the two sides. In this historic agreement, Abbas reiterated that the king is the custodian of holy sites in Jerusalem and that he has the right to exert all legal efforts to preserve them, especially Al-Aqsa mosque, the statement said.It is also emphasising the historical principles agreed by Jordan and Palestine to exert joint efforts to protect the city and holy sites from Israeli judaisation attempts. It also reaffirms the historic principles upon which Jordan and Palestine are in agreement as regards Jerusalem and their common goal of defending Jerusalem together, especially at such critical time, when the city is facing dramatic challenges and daily illegal changes to its authenticity and original identity.Al-Aqsa compound, known to Muslims as Al-Haram Al-Sharif, is Islams third holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, and houses the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosques. But it is also Judaisms most sacred place of worship, venerated by Jews as Temple Mount, the site where King Herods temple stood before it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.It is one of the most sensitive sites in Jerusalem, and clashes frequently break out between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.Jerusalem is currently facing major challenges and attempts to change its Arab, Muslim and Christian identity, the palace said.Israel captured the eastern half of the city during the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognised internationally, but the Palestinians want east Jerusalem as capital of their future state.Jordan, which has a 1994 peace treaty with Israeli, administers the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem through its ministry of Awqaf and religious affairs. |

I was lucky to come through. It was the second Miami title for Murray, who won the title in 2009 but lost last years final to Novak Djokovic.Murray will rise to World No. 2, bumping his way ahead of Roger Federer, while Ferrer will move past Rafael Nadal to become fourth in the rankings, both men matching the best position of their careers with the improvement.Nadal and Federer skipped this years edition of the $8.5 million hardcourt event in Miami, which also included a WTA event won by Serena Williams, while World No. 1 Djokovic was ousted in the fourth round.Murray, who owns a home 10 minutes from the stadium, beat Ferrer, who turns 31 on Tuesday, for the seventh time in 12 career meetings. Ferrers only win over Murray off clay was at the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals.Ferrer, who has won this year at Auckland and Buenos Aires, failed in his bid to win his first US title and become the first Spaniard to win the Miami title. He is 0-12 in finals against players ranked in the worlds top four.I am tired. It was a very long match, Ferrer said. Andy had more at the end. Congratulations to him.Ferrer, who fell to 21-5 on the season, apologized to supporters in the crowd he compared to those in his homeland for their passion, saying, Im sorry. Im so sorry. One point. Next time.Ferrer and Murray exchanged breaks over the first six games of the third set, then each held serve once before Murray broke Ferrer for a 5-4 edge when the Spaniard netted a forehand.Murray served for the match but surrendered a break instead, Ferrer pulling level and then holding serve for a 6-5 advantage, both games decided when the Briton netted a forehand.Ferrer reached match point in the 12th game on Murrays serve but stopped play on the key point to challenge on a Murray forehand that was ruled on the baseline, setting the stage for Murray to hold and force the tie-breaker.Thats the beauty of the challenge system, Murray said. Some matches that would have been over. Luckily it just dropped in.Murray roared ahead 4-0 in the tie-breaker and Ferrer collapsed to the court with a leg cramp after falling behind 5-1. He rose but was finished two points later by the Scot on a backhand winner, Murray improving to 14-2 in the year.Hes one of the best players in the world, Murray said of Ferrer. Every time I play him people expect me to win. Hes a great player. Hes a fighter. Liverpool come from behind to beat Villa 2-1 Posted: BIRMINGHAM (AP) - Steven Gerrards penalty sealed a second-half turnaround by Liverpool in a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Aston Villa on Sunday, boosting his teams hopes of playing in Europe next season.Villa, which is now third from bottom with seven games to play, took a halftime lead thanks to Belgium striker Christian Bentekes 14th goal of the campaign but Jordan Henderson started Liverpools comeback with an equalizer in the 47th minute.Luis Suarez then tumbled in the area under a challenge from Nathan Baker 13 minutes later and Gerrard converted the spot-kick into the bottom corner to keep Liverpool five points behind fifth-place Arsenal, which occupies the final European position. The Reds will require an almost-perfect end to the season, and for a few of the teams above it to slip up, to qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League next season.Sometimes you can let the season fizzle out but we dont want to do that, said Gerrard, who needed an injection in his heel to make the starting line-up before scoring his 98th Premier League goal. We want to see if we can nick fifth or sixth in the table. The nature of this comeback showed once again that Liverpool, under Brendan Rodgers, is a side on the up after its slow start to the season. This was its fourth win in the past five league games. |
