Zimbabwe seek redemption in second Test

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Chastened by a heavy defeat that has once again highlighted their lack of progress, Bangladesh begin the second and final Test against Zimbabwe on Thursday looking to prove they can adapt to foreign conditions and match their fellow Test strugglers. The Asian side came into the series as hot favourites after improved performances in Sri Lanka, only to be bowled out for 134 and 147 as they lost the first Test to Zimbabwe by 335 runs at Harare Sports Club. With the second Test being played on the same ground another green-tinged pitch is expected, and Bangladesh will need to show far greater durability against Zimbabwe's talented but inexperienced pace attack if they are to come away from the series with some dignity. We didn't play with any patience and we need to improve that, Bangladesh coach Shane Jurgensen said on Tuesday. We just have to bat for longer. When the game starts we have to be very disciplined in our approach to every ball, and do our basics well, which we probably didn't do in the first game. The Tigers will also need to find a way to dismiss Brendan Taylor cheaply, after he became just the third Zimbabwean to score back-to-back centuries in a Test match.Taylor was dropped once on his way to 171 in the first innings, but did not offer a chance as he breezed to 102 not out in the second. We have certainly been working towards the best way that we can address that situation, said Jurgensen. If we get him out for a low score then we have the opportunity to put some pressure on their other batters. The tourists have been hit with fresh injury worries, with fast bowlers Rubel Hossain and Shahadat Hossain both returning home to be replaced by seamer Shafiul Islam and uncapped allrounder Ziaur Rahman. However opening batsman Tamim Iqbal could return from a broken thumb, while Shakib Al Hasan will be back to full bowling fitness, giving Bangladesh's selectors the option to pick an extra seamer.Zimbabwe, on the other hand, could field the same side that turned out in the first Test and will be buoyed by the opportunity to win a series by more than one match for just the second time in their history. It's big for us - even 10 years ago, with the players we had back then, we struggled to win series, said Taylor. We just have to focus on day one and not look too far ahead. We know Bangladesh have players that can turn a game on its head in a session or two so we must just back our skills, have a clear mindset and look after our bodies.

Sisters of Boston bombing suspects express sorrow

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) - The sisters of the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects said Tuesday they were saddened by the violent actions that hurt so many people. In a statement issued through their attorneys, Ailina and Bella Tsarnaeva also said their hearts go out to the bombing victims. It saddens us to see so many innocent people hurt after such a callous act. As a family, we are absolutely devasted by the sense of loss and sorrow this caused. We dont have any answers but we look forward to a thorough investigation and hope to learn more, they said.Ailina lives in a New Jersey apartment with her husband and baby, and the towns mayor has said her sister has also been at the home. The apartment building remained under police guard Tuesday as the sisters asked that their privacy be respected.Their statement was the first comment from either sister since the capture Friday night of the younger of their two brothers.Early Friday, through a barely open apartment door, Ailina spoke briefly with several news outlets about her brothers. She described the elder brother as a kind and loving man, said I have no idea what got into them and also that at the end of the day no one knows the truth.Federal agents also removed a computer from the apartment. West New York Police Director Michael Indri said last week that Ailina had told agents she had not been in contact with her brothers for a long time, and he said he was confident that the FBI had confirmed the claim.

Judge considers motions in Afghan killings case

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Washington (AP) - The U.S. soldier accused of murdering 16 Afghan villagers during a pre-dawn rampage last year appeared in a military courtroom Tuesday for a hearing that focused largely on what might happen if hes convicted, including which family members and friends could speak on his behalf.Prosecutors and defense attorneys argued over who might testify in support of Robert Bales at any sentencing hearing, should it come to that. Such testimony could help determine whether he receives the death penalty. The Ohio native and father of two from Lake Tapps, Washington state, is accused of murdering Afghan villagers, mostly women and children, early on March 11, 2012. Bales, who was on his fourth combat deployment, slipped away from his base in southern Afghanistan to attack two nearby villages and returned soaked in blood, prosecutors say.He has not yet entered a plea, but it is standard under military law for pretrial motions to address sentencing issues.Bales court martial has been set for September. His lawyers maintain that they cannot be ready to try a death penalty case by then. One of them, Emma Scanlan, is due to give birth that month.Defense attorneys previously gave the court a list of witnesses they intend to call at sentencing, people who might show their client in a good light or explain anything troubling in his background that might warrant leniency.Army prosecutors told the judge that not all of the witnesses were necessary. In some cases, the judge, Col. Col. Jeffery Nance, agreed: It likely would be redundant for two of Bales older brothers to testify, he said, and so defense attorneys should call just one.Likewise, the judge said, the defense would not need to call a teacher, principal and football coach from Norwood High School in Norwood, Ohio, where Bales grew up. Two of the three would do, he said. But Nance did say Bales mother and aunt both would be allowed to speak, as they offered differing perspectives on his life. Such testimony from the aunt could include family mental health issues or descriptions of Bales mothers use of alcohol while she was pregnant with him, the judge suggested.A lot of our witnesses that we want to testify in a potential penalty phase will be here, including Sgt. Bales mother, Scanlan said after the hearing. Shes a very important witness to who he was as a child and who he is a man.Among the other witnesses defense lawyers might call on Bales behalf is his high school football teammate Marc Edwards, a future running back at Notre Dame and later National Football League teams including the 2002 Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.Other issues discussed at the hearing included the defense teams request to have a new psychiatric expert to help determine whether Bales was suffering from mental issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.Citing attorney-client privilege, Scanlan did not say why the request was made. The defense team provided its reasons to the judge, but not prosecutors in a confidential court filing.Prosecutors objected to the motion, saying it smacked of witness shopping, and the judge said he would rule later. He said the same about the defense teams request for a consultant to be appointed to help them pick jurors.During a preliminary hearing late last year, prosecutors built a strong eyewitness case against the veteran soldier, with troops recounting how they saw Bales return to the base alone, covered in blood.

Trial begins for US man in Iran satellite case

Posted:

GREENBELT, Maryland (AP) - The case against an Iranian-American man accused of helping Iran launch its first satellite may sound like a James Bond movie but its a real life drama, a prosecutor said Tuesday as trial opened.Nader Modanlo, 52, is accused of brokering a deal to help Iran launch the earth observation satellite from Russia.Prosecutors say the Maryland resident violated a trade embargo the United States has had against the Middle Eastern country since the mid-1990s and that he was paid $10 million for his assistance. The case youre about to hear is not a movie script, prosecutor David Salem told jurors in opening statements Tuesday in federal court in Maryland.Salem said Modanlo knew about the trade embargo but was in financial trouble. He said helping the Iranians was a Hail Mary pass. Salem also acknowledged that the case is not a simple one, not a bank robbery case caught on camera, and involves many documents. But a defense attorney for Modanlo said in his own opening statement that the allegations are baseless and have been a nightmare for a man who came to the United States to study and stayed to pursue the American dream.Douglas Miller, a public defender representing Modanlo, said his client, a father of two, has been hounded by an enormous, intrusive, life-destroying investigation that ultimately failed. After an investigation of this length and this size and this scope wouldnt you expect to see more than what youre going to see? he said. Because in fact what youll see is that the governments case is just smoke, mirrors, innuendo and guilt by association.Miller said the government would ask jurors to connect the dots between disconnected facts and events. He said there was nothing improper about any of the money Modanlo received. The United States has had a trade embargo against Iran since 1995. Regulations resulting from the embargo prohibit Americans from supplying goods, technology or services to Iran.Modanlos trial is expected to last four to six weeks. He faces decades in prison if convicted of all eleven charges against him.Prosecutors and defense attorneys can agree on some facts. They agree Modanlo moved to the United States from Iran to attend George Washington University. In the early 1990s, he and a partner created Final Analysis, Inc., a Maryland company that worked with the Russian government to launch telecommunications satellites. The company went into bankruptcy in 2001.In 2010, federal prosecutors indicted Modanlo on charges of helping Irans space program. Specifically, they say he acted as a middleman in brokering an agreement between Iran and POLYOT, an aerospace enterprise owned by the Russian government, that resulted in the 2005 launch from Russia of an Iranian satellite, Sina-1.The launch of the 350-pound satellite, which is likely no longer functioning, marked the practical beginning of Irans space program after decades of aspirations. The 2005 launch came a day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, then newly elected, said Israel must be wiped off the map. To many, the launch seemed to back up this threat.Iran has since said it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation, improve telecommunications and expand military surveillance in the region.

NY lawsuit accuses Novartis of health care fraud

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The U.S. government has sued Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. in New York, claiming it gave kickbacks to pharmacies to switch transplant patients from competitors drugs to its own.The civil health care fraud lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan. It seeks unspecified damages and civil penalties.U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says the company used the lure of kickbacks disguised as rebates to turn certain pharmacists into salespeople for one of its drugs. He says the companys actions caused the public to pay tens of millions of dollars for kickback-tainted drugs dispensed by pharmacists who had buddied up to it.Bharara says Novartis is a repeat offender, having settled fraud charges based on kickbacks less than three years ago.

Ronaldinho named Brazil captain against Chile

SAO PAULO (AP) - Ronaldinho will captain Brazil in its friendly against Chile on Wednesday, moving into a strong position to confirm his spot in the Confederations Cup squad.Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari reiterated his confidence in the two-time FIFA player of the year on Tuesday, picking him to lead the team in its final match before the Confederations Cup squad is announced.Scolari has already said he will likely choose between Ronaldinho and Kaka for the World Cup warm-up tournament in June.Kaka will miss the Chile match because only players from Brazilian clubs were selected for the friendly, meaning Ronaldinho could secure his spot with a good performance in Belo Horizonte.Scolari said Tuesday he named Ronaldinho captain in the hope the former Barcelona star will contribute with his attitude and leadership.

Major US flight delays due to budget cut

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - Major flight delays due to staffing cuts among US air traffic controllers continued Tuesday and officials warned more was yet to come as the furloughs hit their third day.US President Barack Obamas Republican foes accused his administration of needlessly disrupting thousands of passengers for political gain in the battle over mandatory budget cuts.As a result of the Administrations poor planning and, I would argue, political motives, thousands of people were stuck on tarmacs over the past few days, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell said. The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday it was working to try to minimize delays, but acknowledged that 1,200 flights were delayed as a result of staffing shortages on Monday alone. A further 1,400 flights were delayed Monday because of the weather. On Sunday, the first day of the staffing cuts, 400 flights were delayed due to the cuts. Tuesdays total was not yet tallied.A trade organization for the nations airlines has filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the cuts, warning they could cause delays of up to four hours at major hub airports, affecting up to 6,700 flights a day and one out of every three passengers. The delays are expected to continue through October as the number of air traffic controllers on duty is cut by 10 percent. The FAAs 47,000 employees are being required to take unpaid days off as the agency seeks to slash its budget by five percent. You would think that there would be lower-priority items for them to choose, Republican Senator John Thune said at a press conference. The FAA said it is dealing with the staffing problems by having controllers space planes farther apart so they can manage traffic with current staff.Delays on Tuesday averaged 75 to 140 minutes at New York airports and 75 minutes in Washington while major hubs in Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago were also affected. Poor weather contributed to the delays. As a result of employee furloughs due to sequestration, the FAA is implementing traffic management initiatives at airports and facilities around the country, the agency said in a statement.Travelers can expect to see a wide range of delays that will change throughout the day depending on staffing and weather-related issues.

Strong quake shakes Papua New Guinea: USGS

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued and no damage was immediately reportedThe strong quake hit at 09:14 am (2314 GMT Tuesday), 31 kilometres (19 miles) north of Rabaul in the the Pacific nations east, the USGS said. It was 18 kilometres (11 miles) deep.Rabaul was the scene of destruction in 1994 when an erupting volcano caused a large number of buildings in the town to collapse, but seismologists said it was unlikely to have suffered any major damage this time.It would certainly have given the area a good shake but Rabaul is on the edge of our damage radius, seismologist John Bathgate from Geoscience Australia told AFP. Theres potential for some damage, but expect it to be very minimal.Damage would be more likely in coastal areas of New Ireland, he said, with the quake measured by Geoscience Australia as only around eight kilometres off the coast. There was potential for a localised tsunami but it would have passed by now and we have had no reports about one.Bathgate added: Its not unusual for the area to experience this type of quakes, or even larger.Quakes of such magnitude are common in PNG, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.Last week, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the countrys north but no major damage was reported.

Soriano writes footballing and parenting history

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) – A day hell never forget Soriano misses the first half to attend the birth of his daughter, but gets to the stadium in time to score match-winning second-half hat-trick.Jonathan Soriano wrote footballing and parenting history this weekend by attending the birth of his child and then scoring a winning hat trick for Austrian side Salzburg. The 28-year-old Spaniard rushed from his wife Cristinas bedside after little Abril had been safely delivered to come on after half-time against Wolfsberger, with the score at 2-2.After just four minutes, the former Barcelona player found the back of the net with a neat chip over the head of Wolfsbergers keeper, putting the defending champions in front.Brazilian team-mate Alan then made it 4-2 before the proud father, who already has two daughters, scored in the 77th minute -- and again in the 88th for good measure. With three daughters, three goals and three points for his team, currently second in the league table, it was, Soriano said, an incredible day for me.I dont think Im going to forget it in a hurry.Former Barcelona striker Jonathan Soriano could have been forgiven for taking the day off after his wife was rushed to hospital this weekend. But having witnessed Cristina Sabater give birth to their third child, a daughter named Abril, on the morning of the game between his Red Bull Salzburg and rivals Wolfsberger, it was announced Soriano was heading for the match.A friend said: The little senorita is there, were on our way to the stadium. Tell the coach that Jonny would like to play if he can.Salzburg are second in the Austrian Bundesliga thanks largely to Sorianos goals. But approaching half-time, with their star man not nowhere to be seen, they were being held 2-2 at home.Thankfully, Soriano was inspired by the joyous news of that morning and, after taking to the field at the start of the second half, fired his side to victory with a supreme hat-trick.Just four minutes after coming on, he found the back of the net with a cute lob to put the defending champions into the lead. Then, after Alan had notched from close range, the father grabbed his second from a corner, and completed his memorable afternoon with a sharp finish from an acute angle. The three strikes took the 27-year-old, who was tracked closely by Swansea recently, to within two of Philipp Hosiner, who has plundered 27 for first Admira then leaders Austria Vienna.Reflecting on the day, he said: This is an incredible day for me. Having the chance to play and three goals, I think I will not forget any time soon. .
