Last-gasp Luiz gives Chelsea victory over Basel Posted: BASEL (AFP) - David Luiz scored with the very last kick of the game to earn Chelsea a dramatic 2-1 win at FC Basel in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.Basel, who were appearing in their first European semi-final, looked set to earn a draw after a contentious 87th-minute penalty from Fabian Schar cancelled out Victor Moses early opener. However, deep into injury time, Luiz drove a 25-yard free-kick beneath the Basel wall and into the bottom-right corner to put Rafael Benitezs side in control ahead of next weeks return leg at Stamford Bridge. In the end, the only sour note for the visitors was a yellow card for Ashley Cole that rules him out of the second leg, although Basel will also be without centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic for the same reason.Chelsea had welcomed Cole back after a three-week absence due to a hamstring injury, but their wariness was demonstrated by interim coach Benitezs decision to deploy centre-back Luiz in a midfield holding role.Basel eliminated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the quarter-finals, having knocked Manchester United out of last seasons Champions League, and they served early notice of their threat when Mohammed Elneny curled a cross onto the roof of the Chelsea net.It was Chelsea, however, who took the lead in the 12th minute, to the disappointment of watching Basel native Roger Federer.Frank Lampard drew a smart save from Yann Sommer with a near-post volley and from the resulting corner, the England midfielders cross struck Moses and ricocheted into the roof of the net.Basel responded immediately, briefly forcing the visitors onto the back foot.Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech tipped a stinging Schar free-kick over the bar, while Valentin Stocker hit the outside of the post with a drilled cross from the right. The away side finished the half strongly, though, with Sommer producing a sharp reflex save to repel Ramires half-volley from close range.Eden Hazard might have doubled Chelseas lead shortly before half-time, but a last-ditch challenge from Park Joo-Ho put him off just as he was about to take aim at the exposed Sommer. In the opening exchanges of the second period, both sides hit the woodwork with chances that would have greatly altered the face of the game.First, Stocker rolled a low shot against the base of Cechs right-hand post, before Fernando Torres saw a left-foot snap-shot crash back off an upright after a bold run down the Chelsea left from Hazard.Basel coach Murat Yakin introduced Marcelo Diaz and Jacques Zoua from the bench, and the hosts saw Fabian Frei and then Zoua shoot narrowly wide from just outside the box.Cech saved at the feet of Salah, but after several nervous moments in the Chelsea area, the hosts pressure told when Czech referee Pavel Kralovec penalised Cesar Azpilicueta for making contact with Stocker from behind.Schar duly drilled his spot-kick down the middle, before Sommer produced a stunning point-blank save to deny John Terry, only for Luiz to strike in the fourth minute of added time to end Basels unbeaten home record in this seasons competition.

Boxing: Pacquiao eyeing November fight in Macau Posted: MANILA (AFP) - Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao will likely face either of US fighters Brandon Rios or Mike Alvarado in Macau in November, his promoter Bob Arum said Thursday.Pacquiao, 34, who has won an unprecedented eight world titles in different weight divisions, had wanted to fight either Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez and unbeaten US boxer Timothy Bradley, who both beat him last year. But they decided decided to fight each other in Las Vegas in September. The choice is between Alvarado and Rios, Arum said via a long-distance telephone call, conceding that Marquez or Bradley had been his initial priorities.Pacquiaos next fight was pushed back because October was a busy month for the Chinese in Macau with many holidays, making November a better choice, Arum said.Pacquiao lost his World Boxing Organisation welterweight crown in June last year in a controversial points decision to Bradley, then suffered a knockout defeat to Marquez. The Philippine boxer, who has a win-loss record of 54-5 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, was until then regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. But the losses raised calls that he should consider retiring.Pacquiao has said he wanted his next fight to be outside the US, where he has traditionally fought in front of huge crowds and for enormous pay-per-view television revenues, to avoid high taxes.
Study: New bird flu jumped directly from chickens Posted: LONDON (AP) - Chinese scientists have for the first time found strong evidence of how humans became infected with a new strain of bird flu: from chickens at a live market.Chinese scientists compared swabs from birds at markets in eastern China to virus samples from four patients who caught the new H7N9 virus. The scientists found the virus from one patient was nearly identical to one found in a chicken. The research was published online Thursday in the journal Lancet.Finding definitive proof of how patients were infected is very difficult and experts have so far struggled to find much virus in birds. Despite taking nearly 48,000 samples from animals in live markets, Chinese officials found only 39 positive tests for H7N9. Experts had suspected birds in live markets to be the source of infection but werent sure if other animals or wild birds might also be responsible.Health officials have so far refrained from recommending any wide-scale slaughter of poultry to contain the disease, one of the main tools used previously to combat another bird flu strain, H5N1. Unlike that strain, H7N9 doesnt appear to sicken chickens, giving experts fewer signs as to where it might be spreading.Chinese authorities have shut down live poultry markets in many affected regions, which seems to have slowed down the virus. Still, Taiwan reported its first case earlier this week.So far, H7N9 has infected more than 100 people in China and killed more than 20.
