PTI pins hopes on high turnout By Amjad Mahmood LAHORE, May 10: Punjab will be the major political theatre on Saturday with both the PML-N and the PTI, the two main rivals in the province, expecting a record-breaking voter turnout in the ‘make-or-break’ elections. The PML-N is relying on its past performance in Punjab in the province and the ‘doable’ future programme it has presented before the masses, while the PTI is banking on its chief Imran Khan’s appeal particularly to the youth.
Two ANP men killed in Swabi blasts By Muqaddam Khan SWABI, May 10: Two workers of Awami National Party (ANP) were killed in a series of bomb blasts which also damaged a polling station and three election offices in Swabi on Friday. Three people were injured. One blast took place at the MCB Chowk in Yar Hussain bazaar near the election office of an ANP candidate for provincial assembly seat PK-33.
5,000 troops for ‘most sensitive’ polling stations By Iftikhar A. Khan ISLAMABAD, May 10: The army has deployed over 75,000 troops across the country to strengthen security for the general elections on Saturday. A military official told Dawn that security cameras had been installed where necessary. Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) will be used in most sensitive areas as and when required and aerial surveillance of these areas will also be conducted. Army’s sniffer dogs have been made available for security duties.
KSE-100 index at all-time high By Our Equities Correspondent KARACHI, May 10: Stocks posted massive gains for the third day in a row on Friday with the KSE-100 index up by 255 points to settle at new all-time high of 19,916 points. The pre-election rally led by foreign funds was at the heart of the stock market gains. Foreign portfolio inflow on Friday amounted to $4.08 million. From January to-date, foreigners have bought $198m worth of Pakistani stocks.

Police have no clue yet to whereabouts of Gilani’s son By Shakeel Ahmad MULTAN, May 10: As police remained clueless on Friday about whereabouts of Ali Haider Gilani, the son of Yousuf Raza Gilani, the former prime minister is optimistic that the country’s top intelligence agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) would help recover his son. A PPP candidate for Punjab Assembly seat, PP-200, the junior Gilani was kidnapped by armed men on Thursday after a corner meeting in Farrukh Town. His secretary and guard were killed in the strike.
Miraculous survival for Bangladeshi woman SAVAR (Bangladesh), May 10: Bangladeshi rescuers pulled a woman alive from the ruins of a collapsed garment factory complex on Friday after she spent 17 days trapped in a basement under the rubble. Hours after officials had announced that the death toll had surged past the 1,000 mark, recovery teams who had long given up any hope of finding more survivors were stunned to hear the voice of a woman calling out for help.
3 soldiers, 9 militants killed in Kurram By Hussain Khan PARACHINAR, May 10: Three soldiers and nine militants were killed in a gunfight in Parachamkani area of Kurram Agency on Friday, forcing local people to leave the mountainous region to safe places. “More than 1,000 families have left their houses due to disturbance in Parachamkani,” said a source at the office of the assistant political agent of central Kurram.
Blast near poll offices kills four in Miramshah MIRAMSHAH, May 10: Two bomb blasts rocked Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan tribal region, on Friday and one of them which took place near election offices of three parties killed four people and left 21 injured. One blast occurred at the Khwaja Jan Chowk in Miramshah bazaar near the election offices of candidates for the NA-40 seat. (According to AFP, the election offices belong to the candidates of PML-N, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam.) The candidates were in their offices at the time of the blast, but remained safe.
Bilawal did not cast his vote: Zardari casts vote by post By Syed Irfan Raza ISLAMABAD, May 10: President Asif Ali Zardari, who will be in Bilawal House in Karachi on the polling day, cast his vote in his hometown of Nawabshah through postal ballot on Friday. However, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will remain in Dubai and not cast his vote. He is reported to have been advised not to return to the country because of security threats.
‘N’ candidate barred from contest By Nasir Iqbal ISLAMABAD, May 10: The Supreme Court barred a PML-N candidate on Friday from contesting for a Punjab assembly seat. “We direct that the respondent (Chaudhry Saifullah Gill) is restrained from contesting the election from constituency PP-61 Faisalabad,” said an order issued by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Election postponed IN a late-night development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that due to the precarious law and order situation in Kurram Agency, polling for the NA 38 constituency had been put off. The district returning officer had requested the commission to put off voting in the constituency, which was accepted, said an ECP official in Islamabad.
PPP seeks Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification By Our Staff Reporter ISLAMABAD, May 10: The PPP submitted a petition to the chief election commissioner on Friday, demanding disqualification of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif from contesting election for violating the code of conduct by ‘misusing’ a photograph of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in an advertisement. PPP leader Masud Kausar said at a press conference that the party had also requested the chief justice to take suo motu notice of the advertisement which appeared in newspapers on May 9 and ‘conspicuously’ carried a photograph of the chief justice with Mr Sharif.
