Three British soldiers killed in Afghanistan blast

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday that Britain was paying a very high price in Afghanistan after three soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb.Six British soldiers have now been killed this year in Afghanistan, where British casualties have slowed over the past year.Britain has not lost so many soldiers in one incident since six were killed by a similar blast in March last year. The defence ministry named the men as Corporal William Thomas Savage, Fusilier Samuel Flint and Private Robert Murray Hetherington. They received immediate medical attention at the scene of the blast in Helmand province on Tuesday and were evacuated by air to Britains main Camp Bastion base but could not be saved, the ministry said. The deaths take the total number of British troops killed by enemy action in Afghanistan over the 400 mark, to 401, of a total of 444 who have lost their lives in the campaign begun in October 2001.We have paid a very high price for the work were doing in Afghanistan, Cameron told ITV television. It is important work because its vital that country doesnt again become a haven for terrorists -- terrorists that can threaten us here in the UK.But today our thoughts should be with the families and friends of those that have suffered. The three soldiers vehicle was hit on a routine patrol in the district of Nahr-e Saraj.Their deaths come as a great loss to all those serving in Task Force Helmand, spokesman Major Richard Morgan said in a statement.Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said he was deeply saddened by the news.It is clear from the tributes paid to them that they were exceptional men who served their country with distinction, he added.Their families have been informed. It is the first time since September 2012 that British troops have been killed by a roadside bomb, which have caused many of the British deaths in Afghanistan. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Taliban militants frequently use roadside bombs against foreign troops and their Afghan allies.

Brahimi to quit as Syria peace envoy: diplomats

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is on the verge of quitting amid growing frustration at deadlocked international efforts to end the worsening conflict, diplomats said Wednesday.Brahimi is itching to resign but being persuaded to hang on for a few more days, said one UN Security Council diplomat. He has told everyone that he wants to leave, there is little hope that he will stay, an Arab diplomat at the United Nations told AFP.The 79-year-old former Algerian foreign minister was named in place of former UN leader Kofi Annan as the UN-Arab League envoy on August 17 last year. He recognized at the time that he faced an uphill battle.Brahimi has been criticized by the Syrian opposition and President Bashar al-Assads government said last week it would no longer cooperate with him.Like Annan, before him Brahimi has been increasingly frustrated at the failure of the major powers to agree to a plan on ways to end the two-year-old conflict which has left more than 70,000 dead.Russia has vetoed three UN Security Council resolutions seeking to increase pressure on Assad, while the United States, Britain and France have stepped up aid to opposition groups in recent months. But the Arab League decision to recognize the opposition Syrian National Coalition as the legitimate government of Syria was the final straw for the veteran UN troubleshooter, diplomats said.He wants to resign because he feels that the Arab League has taken themselves in a directions which is a bit different from the UN, said the Security Council diplomat.

Murillo Karam says their small, twin-engine propeller plane was about 28 years old.The newspaper El Universal said Wednesday that an auditors report issued in October found serious problems with maintenance and airworthiness in the prosecutors fleet of aircraft.

Bayern Munich lines up CL final with Dortmund

Posted:

BARCELONA (AP) - Bayern Munich beat a Barcelona side missing Lionel Messi 3-0 on Wednesday to seal a crushing 7-0 win on aggregate and line up an all-German Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.Without its all-time leading scorer, apparently not fit from his right hamstring injury, Barcelona failed to seriously threaten Bayerns goal much less an epic comeback after its 4-0 first-leg defeat. After the visitors had toyed with Barcelona in the first half, Bayern forward Arjen Robben finally opened the scoring in the 49th minute.Barcelonas Gerard Pique added an own goal in the 72nd and Thomas Mueller headed in Bayerns third goal just four minutes later, as Barcelona slumped to its first home loss in European competition since 2009.Bayern will face Dortmund in the final on May 25 at Wembley Stadium.Pique described it as one of his clubs worst nights, adding that even Messi wouldnt have made a difference. It isnt pleasant living through a situation like this, Pique said. In the first half, we really tried but when they scored the first we were left feeling down. We have to congratulate Bayern who were superior. The fact that Lionel Messi, the best player in the world, did not play was a factor but I do not think his participation tonight would have changed things all that much. While fellow Spanish side Real Madrid won 2-0 on Tuesday to almost reverse a 4-1 first-leg loss to Dortmund, Barcelona didnt even come close and definitely didnt bow out of Europes top-tier competition gracefully.Instead, its second stinging defeat to the newly-crowned German champions will surely open a period of reflection in the club, despite being on course to win the Spanish league title. The Catalan side has been seriously outclassed for the first time since a trophy-laden era started in 2008 under the guidance of former coach Pep Guardiola, who will take over as Bayern coach next season. After these two performances, Guardiola will have a tough time matching the job Jupp Heynckes has done this season.Cracks had already appeared in Barcelonas dominance during the round of 16 with a 2-0 loss at AC Milan, before Messi dug down and scored twice to help secure a 4-0 win.And after this tie, its clear that the power has shifted away from Camp Nou further east.I think it is a terrific performance, it is a little bit of history, Robben said. If we perform like this, against a team who have dominated Europe for the past five years, who have so much quality, it is amazing.Besides Messi, Barcelona was also missing Jordi Alba (suspended), Sergio Busquets, Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano to injury. But the glaring truth is that even with several Spanish internationals on the pitch Bayern, was once again the better side.Bayern destroyed Barcelona in their first meeting last week, looking both the fresher and more imaginative side, while holding Messi in check without much trouble. And although Messi contributed little in the loss in Germany, nobody had expected him not to start given his teams daunting challenge of pulling off a historic comeback.Since injuring his leg on April 2 against Paris Saint-Germain, Messis only start had been against Bayern. He had missed three games and come off the bench in two more, including last Saturdays Spanish league game at Athletic Bilbao where he looked to be back in top shape after scoring a superb goal and setting up another in the 2-2 draw.If coach Tito Vilanova had kept Messi on the bench to spur his other players on, the plan backfired.Camp Nou was uncharacteristically subdued from the start as if the absence of Messi had robbed the home fans of their last hopes.Neither side played with the tension expected for a Champions League semifinal; Bayern because it was in command, and Barcelona seemingly lacking in belief.Needing to score at least four goals to send the game into extra time, Barcelona didnt seriously threaten Bayerns area in the first 45 minutes and was limited to Pedro Rodriguezs rising shot in the 24th to give goalkeeper Manuel Neuer his first save.Barcelona could muster little else, while Bayern provided a constant threat on the break.Having failed to complete that last pass in the first 45 minutes, Bayern finally converted just after halftime when Robben received the ball on the right flank, cut back to his left to shake off Adriano, and curled one of his trademark left-footed shots over the outstretched Victor Valdes and into the far side of the net.Bayern then pressed its advantage and quickly turned a win into humbling of Barcelona.Pique added to the home sides misery when he kneed Frank Riberys cross into his own net in an attempt to clear.Mueller then netted his third goal of the series when Ribery picked him out at the far post to head home his cross over Valdes.Barcelona had gone undefeated in 21 Champions League home matches since its 2-1 loss to Rubin Kazan on Oct. 20, 2009.

Triathlete Hempel retires after 2nd doping offense

Posted:

VIENNA (AP) - Austrian triathlete Hannes Hempel has retired after failing a drug test, three years after being banned for his involvement in the doping case of former cyclist Bernhard Kohl.Hempel, who had unnaturally high levels of testosterone when tested in March, said Wednesday he will pass on having my B sample opened ... I know from experience that my suspension is already certain and I am not willing to invest a lot of money in an unwinnable fight against (Austrian anti-doping agency) NADA.In 2010, Hempel was handed a four-year ban, later reduced to two, for supplying Kohl with the blood booster CERA during the 2008 Tour de France, where Kohl took third and the polka-dot jersey for best climber. Kohl was later stripped of his results after admitting to doping. Before switching to triathlon in 2003, Hempel rode for Gerolsteiner, the same team Kohl later joined. Hempel won the Austrian road championship three times in the 1990s.I feel like the triathlon scene wanted to get rid of me, the 39-year-old Hempel said. Thats why I announce my retirement from professional sport as of now.

Oil sinks on China manufacturing and US supplies

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil dropped more than 2 percent Wednesday, following disappointing economic news from the world's two biggest oil-consuming nations and a large increase in U.S. crude supplies.Benchmark oil for June delivery fell $2.43, or 2.6 percent, to finish at $91.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Data from China and the U.S. pointed to weaker demand for oil. The manufacturing sector in both countries grew at a slower pace in April, according to data from industry groups. Construction spending in the U.S. also fell. And payroll processor ADP said that private employers in the U.S. added just 119,000 jobs last month, below analyst estimates. While the market was digesting the economic news, the Energy Department said U.S. crude inventories expanded by 6.7 million barrels last week, nearly five times the increase analysts expected. At 395.3 million barrels, supplies are the highest since 1982, when the government began tracking inventories. The nation's oil production, at 7.3 million barrels per day, is the highest it's been in 20 years. Imports of foreign crude increased last week, adding to bulging supplies.Oil has dropped $3.47 a barrel, or 3.7 percent in two days, after gaining $5 last week. Analysts doubted whether economic conditions supported higher priced and broad-based macro concerns were reinforced by disappointing manufacturing data out of both the U.S. and China on Wednesday, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates.Late in the trading session, the Federal Reserve said it will maintain its plan to keep short-term interest rates at record lows at least until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent. Oil inched back above $91 after the Fed issued its latest policy update. It was as low as $90.11 at one point in the trading session.Loose monetary policies can boost oil prices because higher growth translates into added oil demand and because ample money supply weakens the dollar and makes crude cheaper for traders using other currencies.Brent crude, which is used to set prices of oil from the North Sea used by many U.S. refiners, dropped $2.42, or 2.4 percent, to end at $99.95 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Euro heads higher ahead of ECB meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro moved higher against the dollar for the fourth straight session Wednesday ahead of the policy meeting of the European Central Bank, widely expected to result in an interest rate cut.Poor data on the manufacturing sector and job creation in the United States, coupled with a tepid view of the economy from the Federal Reserve, also put downward pressure on the greenback. At 2100 GMT the euro was at $1.3180, compared to $1.3165 late Tuesday. During the day the currency hit a nine-week high of $1.3243.ECB policy makers were to meet in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava on Thursday amid widespread speculation that they could cut interest rates from current record lows and also unveil new measures to kick-start stymied bank lending. There were doubts about how much the ECB could do to help pull the eurozone out of recession, but a rate cut could demonstrate positively that they are trying, analysts said. The latest deterioration of sentiment indicators has clearly increased the chances for more ECB action this week. Indeed, the majority of financial market participants even seem to be expecting a rate cut, said ING-DiBa economist Carsten Brzeski.Analysts are also hoping to see the ECB discuss non-standard measures, notably to help lift banking lending in the region's struggling periphery, said Markit chief economist Chris Williamson.Meanwhile the Federal Reserve, closing out a two-day monetary policy meeting Wednesday, made no changes to its ultra-low interest rate and quantitative easing stimulus efforts. But it appeared to acknowledge recent weakness in the economy, noting for the first time in its policy statements that it had the option of adding to its QE bond buying if economic conditions deteriorated. The yen was little changed: the dollar slipped to 97.40 yen from 97.45 Tuesday, while the euro edged higher to 128.37 yen from 128.31 yen.The British pound gained on the dollar, rising to $1.5556 from $1.5534. The dollar fell against the Swiss currency, to 0.9271 franc from 0.9294.
