UK PM takes notice of PTI protest in London Posted: LONDON (Online) - British Prime Minister David Cameron has taken notice of the protest demonstration staged by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at 10 Downing Street against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain’s telephonic addresses in Pakistan.According to source, Mr Cameron came out of his residence and witnessed for five minutes the demonstration being held outside. The British PM inquired from his staff about the demands being made by the PTI demonstrators.Responding to the call of PTI hundreds of demonstrators staged a protest against Muttahida Qaumi Movment (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain’s telephonic speeches in Pakistan. As many as 1500 PTI and JI supporters and other demonstrators gathered at 10 Downing Street in London to lodge protest against MQM chief Altaf Hussain. The PTI protesters claimed that Altaf Hussain had threatened its anti vote rigging demonstrators in Karachi with dire consequences during a telephonic speech. The participants of the demonstration demanded of the British government to put a curb on any interference by any kind of group or organization from Britain into the politics of Pakistan and provocation of the latter’s people.Meanwhile, the London Police earlier rejected arresting activists of a Pakistan-based political party here.According to sources, the London police came up with this clarification in the wake of a news item claiming the arrests that went viral on the social media. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh senior vice president, Zahra Shahid Hussain, was gunned down in Karachi on Saturday night.Soon after her killing, the PTI Chairman Imran Khan held MQM Chief Altaf Hussain “directly responsible” for the murder, saying that the MQM chief had openly threatened the PTI leaders and workers.“I hold Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he had openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts,” Imran Khan said.
Obama to discuss counterterrorism strategy Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama will discuss his counterterrorism strategy Thursday, revealing to the American public his plans for unmanned drones and Guantanamo Bay, the White House said Sunday.During his speech at the National Defense University in Washington, the president will discuss our broad counter-terrorism policy, including our military, diplomatic, intelligence and legal efforts, a White House official told AFP.He will review the state of the threats we face, particularly as Al-Qaeda core has weakened but new dangers have emerged. The speech will come a little more than a month after the deadly twin bombings in Boston blamed on two ethnic Chechen brothers who lived in the United States for several years.Obama's address will also discuss his administration's policy and legal framework to counter extremist threats, including the use of drones, according to the official, who requested anonymity. The president significantly expanded the US drone program from his predecessor George W. Bush, particularly against Al-Qaeda and other violent extremist targets in Yemen and Pakistan.Washington sees the attacks as an important weapon in the fight against extremists but they are deeply unpopular in Pakistan because of reports of civilian casualties and because they are seen as insensitive to sovereignty.Pakistan's incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif has warned the strikes present a challenge to our sovereignty.Lastly, Obama's speech will review our detention policy and efforts to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay as the president frames future US efforts against Al-Qaeda and its affiliates, the official added.Late last month, Obama vowed to renew efforts to close the US military prison, where nearly two thirds of the 166 remaining detainees have joined a growing hunger strike that began February 6.Thirty-two of them are being fed through tubes, according to prison authorities.
UN's Ban warns of N Korea 'escalation' Posted: MOSCOW (AFP) - UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned Sunday of a dangerous escalation after North Korea test-fired a short-range missile off its east coast, its fourth in two days, despite pleas to ease tensions.I hope that North Korea will refrain from such further actions, Ban told the RIA Novosti news agency in comments translated into Russian.Ban was in Moscow following talks Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.North Korea sometimes launches short-range missiles for tests or as part of military drills. The United States and South Korean forces had been on heightened alert for a medium-range ballistic missile test in recent weeks amid tensions triggered by North Korea's nuclear test in February.Ban said Pyongyang should resume negotiations. It is time for them to resume dialogue and lower the tensions. The United Nations is willing to help, Ban was quoted as saying.Ban added that he hoped Russia would use its contacts to lower the tensions and strengthen dialogue with North Korea.Speaking later through his spokesman Martin Nesirky, Ban said he remains concerned about provocations and tensions on the Korean Peninsula, particularly given the risks of miscalculation and dangerous escalation. He stands ready to help facilitate the process of peace and trust-building on the Korean Peninsula, Nesirky added in a statement.Moscow was Pyongyang's most important ally in the Soviet era, although its influence over the nation has waned considerably in the past two decades as its financial assistance to North Korea shrinks.Pyongyang fired a guided missile into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) on Sunday afternoon, a defence ministry spokesman told AFP without elaborating. On Saturday, the North fired three short-range missiles off its east coast, apparently as part of a military drill.
At least four police killed in Iraq violence Posted: FALLUJAH (AFP) - Gunmen attacked a police station and an army position in the town of Rawa northwest of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least four police officers and wounding three, a local official said.Qais al-Rawi, the head of the local council for the area, said that gunmen killed and wounded the police in an attack on their station in Rawa, while they also assaulted and then set fire to an army position. There were 15 soldiers and an officer at the position, Rawi said, and their fate is unknown. There have been a number of attacks in recent weeks on security forces in Anbar province, home to Ramadi and Fallujah, two centres of Sunni protests that broke out almost five months ago.Up to 10 people were kidnapped in Anbar on Saturday, according to security officials.Tensions are festering in Iraq between the government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shiite, and Iraqi Sunnis who accuse authorities of marginalising and targeting their community, including through wrongful detentions and accusations of involvement in terrorism. The government has made some concessions, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-Al-Qaeda fighters, but underlying issues have not been addressed.
Nigeria military: 17 killed during offensive Posted: ABUJA (AP) - Nigeria's military says its offensive against insurgents in the country's restive northeast has killed at least 14 suspected Islamic extremists and three soldiers.Brig. He did not say exactly where the fighting occurred but that about 20 people were arrested. There was no independent confirmation of the military's claims.Olukolade says the extremists are in disarray and fleeing to Nigeria's borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger.A decree by President Goodluck Jonathan put Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states under emergency rule, allowing the military to arrest anyone and occupy any building it suspects of housing extremists.

Serena Williams beats Azarenka to win Italian Open Posted: ROME (AP) - Serena Williams won her fourth consecutive title of the year in dominating fashion Sunday, beating third-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3 in the Italian Open final. The top-ranked American will enter the French Open, which starts next Sunday, on a career-best 24-match winning streak.Williams was coming off consecutive titles in Miami; Charleston, South Carolina; and Madrid last week. She didn't drop a set while winning this title.Williams' only previous title at this clay-court event came in 2002, when she beat Justine Henin in the final. That was also the year she won her only Roland Garros title. Last year in Paris, Williams lost in the opening round of a major for the first time, falling to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.Later, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were renewing their rivalry in the men's final at the Foro Italico. On a pleasant spring day, Williams immediately took control by breaking Azarenka's serve twice to take a 3-0 lead in the opening set.The 15-time Grand Slam winner slugged winners at will off both Azarenka's first and second serves, stepping into the court to dictate play at every opportunity.Azarenka grew distraught at the end of the first set, twice slamming her racket on the court in desperation. After trading breaks midway through the second set, Williams took control again when Azarenka double faulted to hand her a 5-3 lead. Williams then served out the match at love and let out a big scream when she unleashed a backhand winner down the line to close it out.Williams held a massive 41-12 edge in winners and served nine aces to Azarenka's none.Williams improved to 12-2 in her career against Azarenka, who spent 51 weeks at No. 1 before Williams reclaimed the top spot in February.Williams had twice won 21 matches in a row before, although both of those runs came more than a decade ago, in 2002 and the beginning of 2003.Martina Navratilova established the longest women's winning run in the Open Era at 74 matches in 1984.At 31, Williams is back at the top of her game after missing 11 months in 2010 and 2011 with a right foot injury and a pulmonary embolism. It was Azarenka's first final since beating Williams for the title in February at Doha, Qatar. That followed the Belorussian's Australian Open victory. Since then, Azarenka has been slowed by right ankle and left foot injuries. It was the 51st title of Williams' career. Navratilova also holds the record in that category with a seemingly insurmountable 167 titles. Williams moved within two titles of matching Monica Seles for ninth on the all-time list.Wiilliams was already first among active players and now has seven more titles than her sister Venus, who is second on the list and watched the final from the stands.Earlier in the women's doubles final, Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Peng Shuai of China upset the top-ranked Italian pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

He suffered his only loss in 2010 to undefeated Welshman Nathan Cleverly and won his most recent bout last June by stopping Czech Sandro Siproshvili.Hopkins, 53-6 with two drawn and 32 knockouts, had to face Murat or forfeit the title under terms of a deal that allowed him to step in front of Murat to challenge Cloud.Murat has nothing to lose and everything to gain by fighting me, Hopkins said. He knows he is fighting a 48-year-old, but he has to understand that there aren't any other 48-year-olds like me.Murat said he was looking forward to sending Hopkins into retirement. His biggest strength is his experience, but I will reveal his weaknesses at Barclays Center in front of his own fans, the challenger vowed. I will be in the best shape of my life and will snatch his belt from under his nose. |
Indian police widen spot-fixing probe Posted: NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indian police said Sunday they had widened their probe into cricket spot-fixing after the arrest of three players and 11 bookmakers, warning that more teams were under the microscope.Test discard Shanthakumaran Sreesanth was among a trio of players from the Rajasthan Royals arrested Thursday over allegations they agreed to bowl badly during the Indian Premier League in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars. But speaking to AFP, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said players for some of the other eight teams involved in the ongoing domestic Twenty20 competition were now under suspicion. It is still early but some other teams are also involved in the rigging, Kumar said by phone. It is not established yet but we are looking into that.Spot-fixing is an illegal activity in which a specific part of a game, but not the outcome, is fixed.Sreesanth, who has played 27 Tests for India, is alleged to have been paid four million rupees (about $75,000) to give away 14 runs in an over while playing for the Rajasthan Royals against the Kings XI Punjab on May 9.His teammate Ankeet Chavan also allegedly agreed to give away the same number of runs in a match Wednesday against the Mumbai Indians in exchange for $110,000.The third player, Ajit Chandila, allegedly received $36,000 for giving away a set number of runs in a match between the Rajasthan Royals and the Pune Warriors.Commissioner Kumar did not disclose the identity of teams now under the widened police investigation but said he was hopeful of an early breakthrough.Meanwhile, India's Law Minister Kapil Sibal said the government was considering new legislation to deal with match- and spot-fixing.I don't think the offence of cheating is something that adequately deals with the issue, Sibal told reporters in New Delhi.Once the broad parameters of the law are made out, I will hand it over to the sports ministry to take it to the cabinet and hopefully introduce it in the coming session of parliament for approval, Sibal said.We cannot afford them (fans) to lose confidence in the sport -- not just in cricket but any sport which is affected by match-fixing and spot-fixing, he added. The three arrested players have already been suspended. Cricket authorities on Sunday said they would launch their own probe into the spot-fixing allegations, promising strict action against the cricketers if they are found guilty. The Press Trust of India reported that the Rajasthan Royals, which is co-owned by Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, would also press criminal charges against Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila.Officers said police have asked hotels in cities such as Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Hyderabad for footage of their security cameras to try and establish that the players met bookmakers who are also now in police custody.

Germans blame euro zone crisis for Eurovision debacle Posted: BERLIN (Reuters) - Germans lamented their unexpectedly poor showing at the Eurovision Song Contest, blaming Chancellor Angela Merkels tough stance in the euro zone crisis for their failure to win any points from 34 of the 39 countries voting.Denmarks Emmelie de Forest won the event, watched by around 125 million people across Europe, with 281 points while German act Cascada was 21st out of 26 countries, getting just 18 points from Austria, Israel, Spain, Albania and Switzerland.Theres obviously a political situation to keep in mind - I dont want to say this was 18 points for Angela Merkel, said Germanys ARD TV network coordinator Thomas Schreiber. But we all have to be aware that it wasnt just Cascada up there on stage (being judged) but all of Germany.Merkel is popular in Germany for her firm position during the euro zone crisis. But she is loathed in parts of Europe for her insisting on painful austerity measures in countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy in exchange for rescue packages. Its unexplainable, said ARD expert commentator Peter Urban on Sunday after Cascada singer Natalie Horler was 21st even though German media had touted her as a favorite. More than 8 million Germans watched, a 44 percent market share. Is it that people just dont like us? Urban was asked on ZDF TV. Theres some truth to that, he said. There will be two German soccer teams in the Champions League final next week and maybe people didnt want Germany to win Eurovision too.
Drone attacks will be unacceptable: JI Posted: LAHORE (Online) - Ameer, Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Syed Munawar Hasan, has said that Washington’s statement to continue drone attacks was a challenge for the newly elected rulers. In a statement here on Sunday, he said that the protection of the life of the citizens was the foremost responsibility of the rulers whereas the killing of innocent tribal people in the name of Al Qaida and Taliban only proved the helplessness of the Pakistan government and the armed forces.Syed Munawar Hasan said, the US had been continuously targeting the tribal areas and the drone attacks were making a mockery of Pakistan’s independence and sovereignty. He said, if the newly elected rulers also continued a cowardly policy on this score like Musharraf and Zardari, their popularity would soon change into hatred. Therefore, the new government would have to dissociate itself from the US war and disallow the drone attacks. The JI Ameer impressed upon Mian Nawaz Sharif to pick up courage on the basis of his public mandate and adopt a bold stance in accordance with the nation’s aspirations making it clear to the US that any more drone attacks won’t be tolerated. He said, the newly elected rulers would have to get out of the US pressure for safeguarding the country’s solidarity and integrity and to restore its image in the comity of the nations. He said, as the nation had expressed it confidence in Min Nawaz Sharif, he too should throw off the yoke of US slavery and refuse to side with the US and NATO.He said the violation of Pakistan’s territorial frontiers by the drones was against international law. The US, he said, had was actually at war with Islam and the Muslims as it was bracketing the Muslims with terrorism and subversion. The JI Ameer further said that peace and stability was essential for national development and progress, and added that as long as terrorist events and US aggression continued, the country could not progress.Syed Munawar Hasan also stressed upon the security institutions and agencies to give up their game in order to overcome target killings and lawlessness in Karachi. The MQM, he said, was holding the port city a hostage and had seized control of the port city, the economic hub of the country through coercion and rigging, as had shattered all dreams of the country’s development and stability.
