51 dead as massive tornado roars through US suburb

Posted:

MOORE, Oklahoma (AP) - A monstrous tornado as much as a mile (1.6 kilometers) wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs, killing at least 51, flattening entire neighborhoods with winds up to 200 mph (320 kilometers) and landing a direct blow on at least one school. An Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office spokeswoman said the death toll was expected to rise. Officials at two hospitals said theyre treating nearly 60 patients, including more than a dozen children. At least 10 people were in critical condition. The storm of rare ferocity less than 1 percent of all tornadoes reach such wind speed ripped through scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city. Block after block of the community lay in ruins. Cars and trucks were left crumpled. The National Weather Service issued an initial finding that the tornado was an EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale, the second most powerful type of twister. In video of the storm, the dark funnel cloud could be seen moving slowly across the landscape, scattering shards of wood, pieces of insulation, shingles and glass over the streets. At Plaza Towers Elementary School, the storm tore off the roof, knocked down walls and turned the playground into a mass of twisted plastic and metal.Several children were pulled alive from the rubble. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain to a triage center in the parking lot.James Rushing, who lives across the street from the school, heard reports of the approaching tornado and ran to the school, where his 5-year-old foster son, Aiden, attends classes. Rushing believed he would be safer there.About two minutes after I got there, the school started coming apart, he said. The students were placed in the restroom.Downed power lines and open gas lines posed a risk in the aftermath of the storm, Police Capt. Dexter Nelson said. The same suburb was hit hard by a tornado in 1999. That storm had the distinction of producing the highest winds ever recorded near the Earths surface 302 mph (486 kph).

Violence against Muslims must stop in Myanmar: Obama

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a long-awaited White House visit, President Barack Obama told Myanmars president that he appreciates the Asian leaders efforts to lead the country in a long and sometimes difficult, but ultimately correct, path to follow toward democracy.Obama spoke as he sat in the Oval Office with former general Thein Sein, who became the first president of Myanmar to visit the White House in 47 years. Activists object to the invitation because of concerns over human rights in the country, but it marks a turnaround in international acceptance for Myanmar after decades of isolation and direct military rule.Obama credited Thein Seins leadership in political and economic reform in bringing about an end to significant tensions between their two countries. As I indicated to President Sein, countries that are success are countries that tap into the talents of all people and respect the rights of all people, Obama said. And Im confident that if Myanmar follows that recipe, that it will be not only a successful democracy but a thriving economy.Thein Sein previously served in a repressive junta, and his meetings at the White House and Congress would have been all-but-impossible before he took the helm of a nominally civilian government in 2011. His name was only deleted from a blacklist barring travel to the U.S. last September. He arrived in Washington Saturday, six months after Obama made history with an unprecedented U.S. presidential visit to the country also known as Burma. The administrations outreach to Myanmars generals has provided an important incentive for the military to loosen controls on citizens and reduce dependence on China.Myanmar has been rewarded by relaxation of tough economic sanctions, and Thein Sein will be addressing American businessmen keen to capitalize on the opening of one of Asias few untapped markets.Sitting next to Obama in the Oval Office and speaking through an interpreter, Thein Sein said he was grateful for the invitation to discuss reforms and said Myanmar still has democratic processes to learn and significant challenges. It is a daunting task ahead of us, he said, noting in particular the widespread poverty in the country. We will need the assistance and understanding of the international community, including the United States, Thein Sein said.In his remarks, Obama used Myanmar the country name adopted by the junta in 1989. However, the U.S. will keep using Burma in official documents. We very much appreciate your efforts in leadership in leading Myanmar in a new direction and we want you to know that the United States will make every effort to assist you in what I know is a long and sometimes difficult but ultimately correct path to follow, Obama said.Obama cited the release of political prisoners and their incorporation in the political process, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, credible elections. He also mentioned the legislatures increasing inclusivity and efforts to resolve long-standing ethnic conflicts and establish laws that respect rights. As President Sein is the first to admit, this is a long journey and there is still much work to be done, Obama said. He said they discussed Seins intention to release more political prisoners, institutionalize political reform and rule of law so it endures and work to end ethnic conflict.Obama said he expressed concern about violence against Muslims in the country. The displacement of people, the violence directed toward them needs to stop, Obama said.It was the first by a Myanmar leader since a September 1966 visit by Ne Win, an independence hero-turned dictator, who began the nations descent from regional rice bowl to economic basket case. Thein Sein visited New York last September for the U.N. General Assembly but didnt come to Washington. The U.S. last month announced it is considering duty-free access for Myanmar to U.S. markets, and there could be progress Monday toward a bilateral trade and investment framework agreement.Thein Seins welcome paled next to that granted last September to Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who met Obama and was presented by Congress with the highest civilian award it can bestow.

Wave of attacks kills at least 95 in Iraq

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A wave of attacks killed at least 95 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, pushing the death toll over the past week to more than 240 and extending one of the most sustained bouts of sectarian violence the country has seen in years. The bloodshed is still far shy of the pace, scale and brutality of the dark days of 2006-2007, when Sunni and Shiite militias carried out retaliatory attacks against each other in a cycle of violence that left the country awash in blood. Still, Mondays attacks, some of which hit markets and crowded bus stops during the morning rush hour, have heightened fears that the country could be turning back down the path toward civil war.Sectarian tensions have been worsening since Iraqs minority Sunnis began protesting what they say is mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government. The mass demonstrations, which began in December, have largely been peaceful, but the number of attacks rose sharply after a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq on April 23.The worst of Mondays violence took place in Baghdad, where 10 car bombs ripped through open-air markets and other areas of Shiite neighborhoods, killing at least 48 people and wounding more than 150, police officials said. In the bloodiest attack, a parked car bomb blew up in a busy market in the northern Shiite neighborhood of Shaab, killing 14 and wounding 24, police and health officials said. The surge in bloodshed has exasperated Iraqis, who have lived for years with the fear and uncertainty bred of random violence. The predominantly Shiite city of Basra in southern Iraq was also hit Monday, with two car bombs there one outside a restaurant and another at the citys main bus station killing at least 13 and wounded 40, according to provincial police spokesman Col. Abdul-Karim al-Zaidi and the head of citys health directorate, Riadh Abdul-Amir.A parked car bomb later struck Shiite worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in the southern city of Hillah, killing nine and wounding 26, according to police and health officials said.In the town of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, killing 13 Iranians and one Iraqi, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but the fact that they all occurred in Shiite areas raised the suspicion that Sunni militants were involved. Also, Sunni insurgents, particularly al-Qaida in Iraq, are known to employ such large-scale bombings.Mondays violence also struck Sunni areas, hitting the city of Samarra north of Baghdad and the western province of Anbar, a Sunni stronghold and the birthplace of the protest movement.A parked car bomb in Samarra went off near a gathering of pro-government Sunni militia who were waiting outside a military base to receive salaries, killing three and wounding 13, while in Anbar gunmen ambushed two police patrols near the town of Haditha, killing eight policemen, police and army officials said. Also in Anbar, authorities found 13 bodies dumped in a remote desert area, officials said. The bodies, which included eight policemen who were kidnapped by gunmen on Friday, had been killed with a gunshot to the head. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Alaska volcano's ash prompts flight cancellations

Posted:

ANCHORAGE (AP) - An Alaska volcano eruption is prompting regional airlines to cancel flights to nearby communities, including a town that reported traces of fallen ash.The Alaska Volcano Observatory says Pavlof Volcano has released ash plumes as high as 22,000 feet (6,705 meters). Clouds obscured the volcano Monday, but scientists say seismic instruments at the volcano 625 miles (1,005 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage show continuing tremors.Geologist Chris Waythomas says the abrasive ash has not risen enough to threaten international air traffic passing over the volcano-rich Aleutian arc. Ash emissions have reached high enough, however, to affect flights of some smaller planes.Anchorage-based regional carrier Penair has canceled a dozen passenger and cargo flights to several communities. They include Sand Point, which reported a dusting of ash Sunday.Ace Air Cargo canceled two flights.

Kerry to Mideast to advance struggling Syria plan

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Secretary of State John Kerry headed back to the Middle East on Monday to press his case for peace talks between Syrian rebels and President Bashar Assads regime amid increasing signs the new U.S. strategy to halt the war is being undermined by Russia.Kerry will first have discussions with the sultan of Oman. He then goes to Jordan to gather with 10 of Americas closest European and Arab partners to discuss how to advance a political transition and end more than two years of bloodshed in Syria, before traveling on to Israel. For the Syria negotiations to succeed, the Obama administration is banking on Russias help. The U.S. and Russia have wrangled repeatedly while more than 70,000 Syrians have died, but they now say theyre working together to start direct talks between Syrias government and the opposition in Geneva next month. Washington demands Assads ouster, while Russia continues to provide the Syrian leader with military aid and diplomatic cover, but President Barack Obama this week said the meeting may yield results. The optimism echoes the message of Kerry, who during his Moscow visit earlier this month declared that the old Cold War foes, by rejuvenating Syrian peace hopes, were demonstrating how they can accomplish great things together when the world needs it.For all the heady talk of cooperation, however, Russia has continued to rebuff American demands that it cut off military support for Assad.Moscow is preparing to give Syria state-of-the-art ground-to-air missile systems, Israeli officials say. It is beefing up its naval presence near its base in northwestern Syria, reports suggest. And, in the latest revelation, U.S. officials say Russia has provided the Assad regime with anti-ship cruise missiles.Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the transfer of the advanced anti-ship missiles is an unfortunate decision that will embolden the regime and prolong the suffering. On the diplomatic front, the situation isnt much better. There, Russia has repeatedly blocked a proposal for an expanded Security Council trip to Turkey and Lebanon to study Syrias refugee crisis, according to U.N. diplomats.

Table tennis: Zhang retains men's world crown

PARIS (AFP) - Defending champion Zhang Jike of China retained his mens singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships in Paris on Monday after defeating compatriot Wang Hao in the final.Fourth seed Zhang prevailed 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 in a rematch of last years Olympic final to secure a fourth major title in a row.Zhang completed a career grand slam when he pipped Wang to the Olympic crown in London last August, adding to the world title he won two years ago in Rotterdam and the 2011 World Cup, with Wang also the losing finalist on both of those occasions.Ma Long took top honours at last years World Cup in Liverpool, an event in which Zhang did not take part.Having raced into a two games to love lead in the French capital, Zhang was pegged back by Wang in game three and the contest appeared to be heading for two-all only for Zhang to fight off four set points in the fourth frame to re-establish a two-game advantage.Wang, the 2009 champion, then took the following game to preserve his title hopes but it proved to be merely a stay of execution as Zhang wrapped things up in game six at the first time of asking. It was a very closely-fought match, we both played well, Zhang said afterwards, his dominance over Wang extended with a seventh straight success over the World No.3 that improved his head-to-head record against Wang to 8-3.For me there is no loser, the most important thing was to enjoy the match and I did that, Zhang continued, paying tribute to his opponent.Ive been in Paris twice (the 2011 World Cup being the other). Both times Ive won the final so I really love it here, added the 25-year-old, who said his next goal was to win all three major titles again.Despite coming up short against Zhang yet again, beaten finalist Wang was not too downhearted by the loss.Im actually not really disappointed. Im really happy to have got to the final, said Wang, who hinted at retirement from the national set up.This may be my last game so I really just wanted to enjoy it. I wanted to use this game as a way to thank all the people who have been so supportive of me, said the 29-year-old.I really want to continue playing, I dont want to give it up but I cannot deny that younger players are doing better.Earlier, womens singles champion Li Xiaoxia doubled her gold medal haul with victory in the doubles final.Xiaoxia and partner Guo Yue powered to a third successive world doubles crown with a 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 win over singles runner-up Liu Shiwen and world number one Ding Ning in another all-Chinese encounter.Bronze medals were awarded to losing semi-finalists Chen Meng and Zhu Yuling, also of China, and Singapore pair Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu.

Squash: Matthew makes impressive start to title defence

Posted:

HULL (AFP) - Nick Matthew, the only Englishman to have won the British Open three times in a row, made an impressive start to his title defence on Monday. The titleholder not only gave an increasingly incisive display during a 11-8, 11-7, 11-3 opening win against Henrik Mustonen, a spirited qualifier from Finland, but afterwards was convincing with words too. Most of all Matthew explained how he was able to play without pressure, a feeling displayed in his freedom of movement and fluent stroke production, particularly while coming back from deficits of 6-7 in both the first two games.Whether it is a blessing or not, I dont know, but the last few PSA events have not gone so well, and eyes have been taken off me, Matthew said. But I have had a good training block, and it feels nice now that I have got the first match out of the way.Although I am the defending champion, its a new court and you dont know what will happen, especially against qualifiers like that.It would have been easy for him to come from quite a different court in Pontefract (the venue for the qualifying competition) and make excuses, but there was none of that.Matthews attitude is similar. He admits that at the age of 32 he may have overplayed a little. Now however he has had a period away from competition, and on the 31-minute evidence of his opening contest, looks better for it.Matthew also has a positive attitude towards Ramy Ashour, the brilliant 25-year-old Egyptian who has taken away his world title and world number one spot in the last few months and now is after his British Open title too.He has always had the ability to be unplayable, Matthew said. What he has found recently is that consistency. His record at the moment speaks for itself. I know from my own experience that it is not easy to go on that sort of run.Hes learnt to win when hes not playing so well. But people do have a chance with him. Hes not blown everyone away.Ashour begins in the other half of the draw tomorrow against Omar Mosaad, his hard-hitting top ten compatriot who was close to taking him to five games in the world championships in Doha in December.Matthew will play a second round on Wednesday against Laurens Jan Anjema, the tall Dutchman who won well against Ryan Cuskelly, the improving Australian qualifier. The other main contender in the bottom half, the fourth-seeded Gregory Gaultier, who is the only Frenchman to have won the British Open title, wants to win it again as a tribute to the coach who unexpectedly died during last years tournament at the O2 Arena in London.Gaultier won his opening match 11-6, 11-9, 11-1 against Alister Walker, the world number 14 from Botswana, before dedicating his efforts to Richard Pons, who passed away only days after being invited to join the Gaultier entourage.

Golf: Tiger wants PGA anchored putting ban ASAP

Posted:

BETHESDA (AFP) - World number one Tiger Woods wants the US PGA Tour to enact a ban on anchored putting as soon as possible if golfs governing bodies impose a ban on the stroke on Tuesday. The US Golf Association and Royal and Ancient Golf Association are expected to announce on Tuesday their decision on whether or not to ban anchored putting, which has aided four of the past six major winners, starting in 2016.Woods has made no secret of his support for a ban and repeated it Monday at an appearance at Congressional Country Club, where he will defend his title next month at the $6.5 million US PGA National.I hope they go with the ban, Woods said of Tuesdays decision. Anchoring should not be a part of the game. It should be mandatory to have to swing all 14 clubs. And as far as the PGA Tour, I hope they do (ban) it as soon as possible to be honest with you. Ive always said that. Ive always felt that golf you should have to control your nerves and swing all 14 clubs, not just 13.Woods will defend his crown June 27-30 in an event that serves as a fundraiser for his foundation. Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia, an anchored-stroke putter, is among those set to compete.Other recent major winners using the belly putter style include reigning British Open champion Ernie Els of South Africa and Americans Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley.Woods is in talks with club officials to keep the National at Congressional, which has hosted five major championships and last year managed to complete the event despite a storm that toppled more than 40 trees Friday, knocking out power and forcing organizers to keep out spectators on Saturday.Woods said there are other options for hosting the event, mentioning Philadelphia and Baltimore as well as Washington.Next month, Woods will be in Philadelphia trying to win his first major title since the 2008 US Open and the 2013 US Open in Merion, a revamped course he has not seen since amateur days.I will play it before tournament week. Generally thats when I do a lot of my scouting on the greens and do all my charting, he said. Then when I get to the tournament side its now about feel, what the weather forecast is going to be, how are the USGA going to try and set it up.Once I come up with a game plan for the week, then its about executing it and being disciplined.Woods has won four titles this year, including the Players Championship earlier this month, the fastest in any season that Woods has won four titles. It was his 78th career triumph, four shy of matching the late Sam Sneads PGA Tour record. My game is coming around and to have won seven times the last couple years is something Im proud of. Its not easy to do, Woods said. Im starting to get the consistency and I feel like what Ive done from last year and this year, being healthy, its certainly pretty positive.Im stronger now than I ever have been.

Oil prices gain for fourth straight session

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices pushed higher Monday for the fourth straight session after reversing an early sell-off chalked up to profit-taking.New Yorks main contract, WTI light sweet crude for June delivery, added 69 cents from Fridays close to $96.71 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in July gained 16 cents to $104.80 a barrel in London. It is a very quiet day in the markets due to holidays across several European countries while economic data is non-existent, meaning crude oil is driven more by technical buying and selling rather than the fundamentals today, said analyst Fawad Razaqzada at trading group GFT Markets.Profit-taking is also playing a key part especially after the sharp rally we saw in the second half of last week. Thus it is hardly surprising that we are seeing prices fall today.Crude futures surged late last week after a better-than-expected reading on US consumer confidence boosted hopes for stronger energy demand in the worlds biggest economy and sent Wall Street to new record highs on Friday.

Euro rebounds; yen gains on minister's comments

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro rebounded against the dollar Monday after sharp losses last week, while the yen also pushed higher after Japan's economy minister said it may have fallen far enough. At 2100 GMT, the euro was at $1.2884 compared to $1.2834 late Friday. The dollar fell to 102.26 yen from 103.19, while the euro moved to 131.76 yen from 132.44.The dollar mostly traded in a narrow range in the absence of fresh economic data and in anticipation of Wednesday's testimony on the economy by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the release, the same day, of minutes from the Fed's last policy meeting. The yen's push higher came after Economy Minister Akira Amari suggested that further weakening of the yen could be harmful after a long, steady fall from last year. It's being said that the correction of the strong yen is largely completed. If the yen keeps on weakening a lot more, it will have a negative impact on peoples' lives, he said. The comments from Mr. Amari suggest the government appears to be satisfied at the levels achieved by the yen at present, said analysts at FXstreet.com.Some traders used Amari's comments as an excuse to take profits after the dollar breached 103 yen, said Daisaku Ueno, senior forex strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley. The British pound also pulled back, rising to $1.5258 from $1.5176. And the dollar slipped to 0.9667 Swiss francs from 0.9716 francs.

New Zealand media slam 'meek surrender' at Lord's

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - New Zealand media on Monday condemned the Black Caps lack of fight in their crushing First Test defeat to England at Lords, when they collapsed for just 68 in the second innings. The total was the 10th lowest at the home of cricket and the ninth worst by a New Zealand team, reviving memories of the Black Caps humiliating dismissal for 45 against South Africa in Cape Town in January.Fairfax Media sports writer Marc Hinton said it was not so much the loss by the worlds eighth-ranked Test side against the second that grated, but the players failure to display the grit that Kiwis demand of their sporting teams.Lets face it, they didnt front, he told RadioSport. Its not a huge total (239) and they didnt get anywhere near it.I think youre entitled to ask where were the fighting qualities... thats the thing that disappoints me.This is a trademark of the Black Caps, when things get tough they tend to fold the tents way too easily for my liking.Former opening batsman-turned commentator Mark Richardson echoed the sentiment, saying: Its the meek surrender when it comes to the Black Caps that really upsets people. The rout was all the more galling for New Zealand fans because if follows a home series against England in March when the Black Caps defied expectations to draw three Tests, dominating two of them. The New Zealand Heralds Andrew Alderson highlighted that for only the second time in New Zealand Test history none of the top six batsmen reached double figures in a second innings that lasted less than two hours.1, 9, 6, 0, 5, 8 reads like the makings of a telephone number but is actually the individual scores of the New Zealand top six who could not turn an outstanding Tim Southee bowling performance into batting success, he wrote.Southee took 10 wickets in the match to keep New Zealand competitive until their batting disaster and the Dominion Posts Mark Geenty said Southees performance provided one positive to cling to.But he said the defeat reopened wounds that were just beginning to heal after the Cape Town capitulation, making it difficult for the New Zealanders to regroup. The question is now, what kind of psychological damage this causes to New Zealand heading into Fridays second and final Test at Leeds, he said. The New Zealand media, however, were unanimous in praising Stuart Broad, who destroyed the Black Caps with a career-best seven for 44 in the second innings.

Tunisian girl held for making immoral gestures online

TUNIS (AFP) - A young Tunisian activist who sparked controversy in March by posting topless pictures of herself online has been arrested for allegedly making immoral gestures, the interior ministry said on Monday. The young girl was placed under arrest yesterday (Sunday) in Kairouan because of immoral gestures, ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told a news conference, without elaborating. Our society is Muslim and we do not accept this marginal behaviour, he said.In videos posted on the Internet, the activist known by the pseudonym of Amina Tyler was in Kairouan where Salafist group Ansar al-Sharia was to have held a congress on Sunday that was prevented by security forces. The teenager is seen having painted the word Femen on a wall near the mosque which was to have been the venue for the gathering. In a country where hardline Muslims have become increasingly active since its January 2011 revolution, her actions have been in support of Ukrainian womens topless protest group Femen. The 18-year-old sparked both scandal and a wave of online solidarity after she was threatened by Salafists for posting pictures of herself on Facebook, bare-breasted.The interior ministry did not specify what charges if any were being brought against Tyler, but offences against morality can be punished by six months in prison under Tunisian law.
