Germany, Canada call on Syria rebels to join talks

Posted:

OTTAWA (AFP) - Germany and Canada on Thursday called on the Syrian opposition to take part in a US-Russian peace initiative after rebels said they would enter no talks until Hezbollah withdraws from the war.The best chance for a lasting solution to the conflict in Syria is a sustainable political process, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said during a visit to Canada. All sides in Syria and the whole international community should do what they can to support the beginning of such a political process, he told a joint press conference with his Canadian host, Foreign Minister John Baird.I urgently call on the national coalition of the Syrian opposition to fulfill its responsibility, Westerwelle said. The National Coalition of the opposition has the responsibility and an obligation to create a united front and to work and to participate constructively at the planned Syria conference, Westerwelle said. The National Coalition had earlier said it would not take part in the Geneva 2 talks so long as the militias of Iran and Hezbollah keep up their invasion, referring to their support for regime forces seeking to retake a key town. The declaration at a meeting in Istanbul came as the rebels appealed for the rescue of 1,000 citizens wounded in Qusayr, a town that elite regime forces backed by fighters from the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah -- an Iran-supported group -- are battling to recapture from rebels.Baird echoed Westerwelles message, saying: If there is to be a political solution obviously both sides have to be at the table.Baird also repeated calls for a political solution to end the suffering of the Syrian people.Westerwelle said he did not know if Russia had begun supplying S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Damascus -- as implied by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a recent interview -- but said the whole discussion is something we really do not appreciate.Assad suggested in an interview to be aired Thursday that Moscow had supplied Syria with the advanced missiles in a move aimed at deterring foreign intervention in the two-year-old conflict.Moscow, the Assad regimes most powerful ally, announced this week it intends to honor its contract to supply Syria with the missiles. The S-300s are capable of shooting down warplanes and guided missiles, and are similar to Patriots, which NATO has deployed on the Turkish border with war-torn Syria.Westerwelle was to later travel to Washington to meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Iraq attacks push May death toll past 600

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Attacks in Iraq, the deadliest of which struck Baghdad, killed 32 people on Thursday, pushing the death toll for this month above 600 and sparking fears of all-out sectarian conflict. The United Nations has called for Iraqs leaders to urgently hold talks to resolve wide-ranging political disputes that have been linked to the surge in unrest. But the governments public response has so far largely been limited to speeches, a shakeup of senior security officers and announcing a series of vague new measures relating to security.I am seriously concerned, UN envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler told AFP by telephone from Berlin. This can get worse, and thats why I strongly advocate that this bloodletting is stopped and the situation does not deteriorate. He added: If there is a political agreement, then security will be better. We see it on the contrary right now -- there is no political agreement, and sectarian violence is on the rise.Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari echoed those remarks, telling reporters at a news conference in Baghdad: If there is no political agreement, then it will affect security, and there wont be a stable security situation. This is a golden rule.Analysts and diplomats often link political stability in Iraq to levels of violence, arguing that militants capitalise on political disagreements and disputes to gain support for their activities on the ground.Amid all the statements and pronouncements, the violence has intensified. On Thursday, six car bombs and two other explosions in Baghdad killed 23 people and wounded at least 79, security and medical officials said. Two border policemen were ambushed and killed along the main Iraq-Jordan highway, while three policemen were killed in a suicide car bombing in the northern city of Mosul, and four more people died in another such attack west of the city.Violence a day earlier, including the bombing of a bridal party in south Baghdad, killed 28 people. Security forces on Thursday barred journalists from attending the funeral for victims of the wedding party assault.A further 46 people died in unrest on Tuesday. The latest attacks took to 607 the number of people killed in May, with more than 1,000 having died in less than two months, according to AFP figures based on reports by security and medical sources. The tolls are still markedly lower than the worst of Iraqs sectarian conflict in 2006 and 2007, when death tolls could run to well over 1,000 people a month, but they represent a substantial increase on previous months.Iraq has seen a heightened level of violence since the beginning of the year, coinciding with rising discontent among the Sunni Arab minority, which erupted into protests in late December.Members of the minority, which ruled the country from its establishment after World War I until Saddam Husseins overthrow by US-led forces in 2003, accuse the Shiite-led government of marginalising and targeting their community.Analysts say government policies that have disenfranchised Sunnis have given militant groups in Iraq both fuel and room to manoeuvre among the disillusioned community. The government has made some concessions aimed at placating protesters and Sunnis in general, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-Al-Qaeda fighters, but underlying issues have yet to be addressed.Various efforts to bring top politicians together since late 2011 have all failed. On Tuesday, the cabinet announced a series of measures related to security. These included pursuing all kinds of militias, calling for a meeting of political powers to discuss developments, providing unspecified support to security agencies and warning the media against inciting sectarian strife. It was unclear what, if any, immediate impact they could have on the worsening security situation.

Li crashes in Paris gloom, Djokovic cruises

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Chinese sixth seed Li Na, the 2011 champion, was knocked out of the rain-lashed French Open on Thursday while Novak Djokovic moved effortlessly closer to a first Roland Garros crown.Li went down 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to brash American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in what was the 31-year-old's earliest defeat at the tournament in seven appearances. As Mattek-Sands, the world number 67, looked forward to a third round match-up with Argentine qualifier Paula Ormaechea, Li was left surveying the wreckage of a second successive Roland Garros failure.Twelve months ago, she went out in the last 16 to Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, who herself was beaten by Ormaechea on Thursday.I know for sure I lost seven games in a row. It was tough conditions, back to the court three times, said Li after her on-off encounter which started shortly after 1100 (0900GMT) but was only completed just after 1700 (1500GMT).But for both players it was the same, so I need to talk to myself and talk to the team to see what happened. On a day which suffered over three hours in rain delays, top-seeded Djokovic wasted no time in making the third round. He eased past Argentina's world 83 Guido Pella, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 to set-up a mouth-watering clash with Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov.Djokovic is bidding to win a first French Open and become just the eighth man to complete a career Grand Slam.Dimitrov beat him in the Madrid Masters second round earlier this month. The 26th seeded Bulgarian will be playing in the last 32 of a major for the first time after breezing past French wildcard Lucas Pouille, the world number 324, in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-1.Later Thursday, seven-time champion Rafael Nadal, who is hoping to become the first man to win the same major eight times, faces Slovakia's Martin Klizan for a place in the last 32.Nadal, the third seed, is also seeking an 11th Grand Slam title.Japanese 13th seed Kei Nishikori made the third round for the first time with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Grega Zemlja of Slovenia. The Asian number one next meets either France's Benoit Paire or Lukasz Kubot of Poland.Third seed Victoria Azarenka reached the third round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Germany's Annika Beck.Australian Open champion Azarenka, a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2009 and 2011, next faces either France's Alize Cornet or Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa for a place in the last 16.Former finalist Samantha Stosur and three-time semi-finalist Jelena Jankovic also went through.Ninth-seeded Stosur was a set and 4-1 up on France's Kristina Mladenovic before a first stoppage. The Australian then took advantage of a 20-minute window on their return to Court Philippe Chatrier to complete a 6-4, 6-3 win.It took me five years to win a match here at Roland Garros through juniors and qualies and everything else, said Stosur. It was a slow process. I think it was just a matter of me becoming a better player and I understood my game a lot better and started to come onto this surface and realized that the weapons I've got really suit this. The 2011 US Open champion will face Serb 18th seed Jankovic for a place in the last 16.Jankovic, a semi-finalist in 2007, 2008 and 2010, beat Spain's Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-0.I think she's a great up and coming player. She hits the ball very hard, very flat, said Jankovic of the Spaniard. And especially in the beginning of the match she gave me a lot of trouble. It was not easy playing against such a player.China's Zheng Jie also reached the last 32 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Melanie Oudin of the United States. But Czech seventh seed Petra Kvitova ended the hopes of another Chinese player, Peng Shuai, winning 6-4, 6-3She will next face Jamie Hampton of the United States.New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, the world 92, put out Slovak 16th seed Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the third round for the first time. She will face America's Sloane Stephens for a place in the last 16Defending champion Maria Sharapova was taking on Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard, the junior Wimbledon champion.

Golf: Schwartzel takes early lead at Memorial

Posted:

DUBLIN (AP) - Charl Schwartzel didn't want to see a good round go to waste. A birdie on his final hole Thursday in the Memorial allowed him to feel good about his game, and it gave him the early lead.Schwartzel bounced back from a double bogey on the par-3 eighth hole with one last birdie for a 7-under 65. That gave him a one-shot lead over Scott Piercy among the early starters on a muggy day.The birdie on the last definitely will make my evening a lot better, Schwartzel said.Tiger Woods, the defending champion and a five-time winner, was among those playing in the afternoon.Piercy is one of the longer hitters on tour, so it would seem his game would be a good fit for the Memorial. He hasn't had much luck, so he decided to scale back off the tee and 3-wood where he typically would hit driver to take it over the bunkers. Piercy had a 66, his best score in 10 rounds at Muirfield Village.Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, might be headed for another short week at the tournament Jack Nicklaus built.McIlroy opened with a birdie and that was as good as it got for the world's No. 2 player. He four-putted the par-3 12th for a double bogey, had a three-putt on No. 7 and ended his round by missing a 4-foot birdie. McIlroy had a 78.I don't really have many explanations for this, McIlroy said.Only eight players broke 70 in the morning on a well-conditioned course with fast greens, and it figured to get even tougher in the afternoon with hot weather, and greens not quite as smooth after all that morning traffic.Schwartzel took advantage with two stretches of four straight birdies. He was at 8-under with two holes to play when he missed the green on No. 8 with an 8-iron and wound up on the downward slope of the sand. He tried to get extra spin on a difficult shot and sent it over the green, and then failed to get up and down. The double bogey didn't stay with him for long. The former Masters champion holed a 12-foot birdie putt and was back in the lead when Piercy, who finished up his round on the 18th hole, made bogey. The birdie was important, not just for the early lead, but to get as much out of such a great round of golf. That's not to suggest that if he had made par on the last hole he would have been ready to retire from the game.It would still be OK, Schwartzel said. It's really when you've played that well and you're thinking you get these few rounds a year where you really strike it well and you're making lots of birdies and you walk off with your 8-, 9-under. And today was one of those where I really did flush it. And you're think maybe another birdie, and then get knocked back with a little 8-iron making double.Josh Teater, Russell Henley and Kyle Stanley were at 67, while Charlie Wi, Matt Jones and Michael Thompson had 69.Piercy hit one of the longest drives on the 18th hole last year, leaving him a flip wedge to the green. Muirfield Village is a big golf course, with some of the widest fairways on tour and thick rough it should be thick for fairways that generous. But hitting driver never really worked for Piercy, so he decided to go with 3-wood, and he stuck with his plan. He still had relatively short irons into the green, and he knew he was onto something when he ran off five straight birdies on the front nine.I thought I'd hit a lot of 3-woods today and open up the fairways and allow me to get at some pins and knock them on the greens and make some putts, he said. Maybe I'm getting older. His 3-wood still goes plenty far. Piercy cut off a quarter-inch from the shaft, and found he was hitting it about 290 yards.

Athletics: Nelson awarded 2004 Olympic shot put gold

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - American shot putter Adam Nelson was officially awarded the 2004 Athens Olympic gold medal on Thursday following the doping disqualification of Ukraine's Yuriy Bilonoh. The International Olympic Committee and IAAF, the global governing body for athletics, approved the change, which finally rewards Nelson for his achievement on August 18, 2004, in the ancient Olympic Stadium at Olympia, Greece. The silver medal Nelson received in Athens after another silver four years earlier in Sydney was among a set of runner-up efforts for the US veteran, a three-time worlds runner-up whose biggest win, until now, had been at the 2005 world championship. It has been a long wait for Adam, but we are thrilled to see him justly rewarded, USA Track and Field chief executive Max Siegel said.Adam is one of the greatest shot putters in history. Adding this Olympic gold medal to his 2005 world championship, 2000 Olympic silver medal and countless other medals and honours only reinforces his already-impressive legacy.Bilonoh had been declared the winner for a throw of 21.16 metres on the last of his six attempts. But when a 2004 drug sample was retested last year, it came back positive for steroids. In the revised results, seven-time US champion Nelson won with a throw of 21.16m on his first attempt, his only successful attempt of the competition.Denmark's Joachim Olsen moved into Nelson's former silver medal spot at 21.07m while Spain's Manuel Martinez moved up to claim the bronze medal at 20.84m.

Oil rises on signs US economy still needs stimulus

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil rose Thursday on indications that the U.S. economy still needs the Federal Reserve to maintain its current stimulus measures.Benchmark oil for July delivery rose 48 cents to $93.61 a barrel in New York. That marked a reversal of Wednesday's sentiment, when oil fell $1.88 on concerns the Fed would taper it stimulus program. The government said the economy grew at 2.4 percent in the first quarter, slightly slower than initially estimated. Also, the number of Americans seeking unemployment aid rose last week, a sign layoffs have increased. That makes it more likely the Fed will continue buying $85 billion of bonds each month in an effort to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing, lending and investing. That environment has helped make oil a more attractive investment than low-yielding options such as bonds.Meanwhile, the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said the nation's supply of oil rose last week by 3 million barrels to 397.6 million barrels, the highest level since the government started collecting the data in 1978. But gasoline supplies fell by 1.5 million barrels just ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. That was twice the drop analysts expected and indicated that demand picked up during what is considered the start of peak driving season. On Friday, ministers from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will meet in Vienna to discuss, among other things, production levels. But more complex issues also face OPEC, including the rise of shale oil production in the U.S. The Paris-based International Energy Agency says total production could top 9 million barrels a day by 2018, which would mean near self-sufficiency for the U.S. as well as significantly less dependence on OPEC imports.Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, fell 24 cents to $102.19 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Dollar falls on weaker economic data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell against other major currencies Thursday after a batch of slightly weaker US economic data put a damper on demand for the greenback. The euro bought $1.3043 around 2100 GMT, up from $1.2938 at the same time Wednesday. The dollar dropped against the Japanese currency, to 100.74 yen from 101.06 the prior day, while the euro rose to 131.39 yen from 130.75.The dollar was under pressure after US data was mildly soft in tone, said Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo Securities.First-quarter economic growth was revised slightly lower, to 2.4 percent, and pending home sales in April were well below expectations.New claims for unemployment insurance benefits unexpectedly rose last week but remained in their recent range. The euro, meanwhile, drew support from an encouraging eurozone indicator showing economic sentiment rose in May and as investors adjusted portfolios before the month ends. The single currency remains broadly supported by month-end positioning, said Omer Esiner of Commonwealth Foreign Exchange.Still, its medium-term outlook has not meaningfully improved, with the threat of additional ECB lending rate cuts likely to keep it vulnerable to renewed losses. The dollar fell against the Swiss currency, to 0.9534 franc from 0.9618 late Wednesday. It also weakened against the pound, which traded at $1.5229, up from $1.5127.

Dhoni sidesteps IPL row

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni kept his own counsel Thursday when questioned on corruption claims regarding the Indian Premier League but promised to reveal his views at the right time.Controversial accusations of spot-fixing have engulfed the sixth edition of the lucrative Twenty20 tournament, with Indian police making several arrests in recent weeks. The investigations started on May 16 when Delhi police arrested three cricketers including Test fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, accusing them of deliberately bowling badly in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars. The scandal is threatening to bring down N. Srinivasan, the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who has been under intense pressure after his son-in-law was arrested for allegedly betting on IPL games.Gurunath Meiyappan, is an executive at the Chennai Super Kings IPL team -- owned by Srinivasans India Cements and featuring Dhoni as one of its star players.Dhoni, speaking at a news conference in Birmingham, central England, on Thursday to preview Indias Champions Trophy bid, said he was glad to be abroad. Its good to be out of there (India). But asked for his views on the evolving IPL row, which has seen Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf stood down from the Champions Trophy following fixing allegations in the Indian media, Dhoni was cautious. Its not that the reputation (of Indian cricket) is gone, he said. When the right time comes Ill answer (more thoroughly), but as of now I dont think we have lost reputation because whatever the set-up will be throughout the world or in any sport, still youll have people who will be slightly mentally weak compared to some of the others.I would love to elaborate but at the right time Ill do it. I just want to keep our side away from everything as of now.Reigning world champions India are in the process of rebuilding their side and have arrived for the mini World Cup that is the Champions Trophy without Sachin Tendulkar, now retired from ODIs, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.Fans sad to see some of their favourites no longer involved have been critical of India in recent months but Dhoni backed a youthful squad to come good. Its an ongoing process. A few of them (fans) will ask questions and you have to silence them, he said. Its for us to see what kind of a squad weve got with a fresh bunch of players. You have to look at the positives. If you look at the positive you can say the players that have been playing in the IPL have had good exposure to international bowlers because bowlers from all over the world, they come and play in the IPL.The best that the world has to offer (play IPL) which means most of the players are in touch and are in good rhythm, wicketkeeper/batsman Dhoni added.India have warm-up matches against Sri Lanka on Saturday and Australia on Tuesday before facing South Africa in the opening match of the tournament proper in Cardiff on June 6.

Gayle urges ICC to follow IPL publicity example

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - West Indies star Chris Gayle believes the International Cricket Council have something to learn from the Indian Premier League (IPL) when it comes to publicising events such as the Champions Trophy.Once described as the unwanted child of world cricket by Australian former ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed, the seventh and final edition of the Champions Trophy will start in Cardiff on June 6.Although rocked by recent spot-fixing allegations, the lucrative IPL has captivated crowds in India, where the enthusiasm for cricket in the worlds second most-populous nation provides the bulk of the finance that fuels the global game.I think it is down to how they actually promote it to be honest, the star batsman said at the launch of the Chris Gayle Academy in Wallington, south of London. The 33-year-old left-hander played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the latest IPL and caused worldwide headlines with the fastest-ever Twenty20 century, taking just 30 balls to reach three figures against Pune Warriors.Gayle struck an astonishing 17 sixes and 13 fours on his way to an unbeaten 175 from 66 balls - the highest individual IPL score. There is no doubt that the IPL is huge but I think what is higher than the IPL is any World Cup-style event, Gayle said. This is the Champions Trophy but it is not so well highlighted (in the media) when compared to the IPL. I think once they can start making people gravitate back to the 50-over game it will be a good thing. This is the last Champions Trophy and I dont know what the ICC will do and whether they will replace it, we will have to wait and see, the promotion will have to be good. The West Indies have won the Champions Trophy once, in 2004 when it was last played in England. We can still take a lot from it, regardless of the fact that nine years is a long time ago, said Gayle, who last year helped the West Indies win the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. We can still see it as a positive as a West Indies team came here and won the competition in the cold conditions. You also have to take into consideration that we have won the T20 World Cup and are a team of champions. We play good cricket.Drawn in Group B alongside India, Pakistan and South Africa, the West Indies will have their work cut out to reach the semi-finals.Gayle said it was vital they made a good start in their tournament opener against Pakistan at The Oval on June 7.It is a huge group. A tough, tough group and we have some great players in there, the first game will be key and that can set the tone for the tournament.Gayle was speaking at the launch of a project that saw him teaming up with Cricket for Change, an educational cricket charity and funders Comic Relief to create The Chris Gayle Academy in Kingston, Jamaica and London. The aim of the academy will be to take a final squad of up to 18 young people on a journey of self-development using cricket as a means to motivate and inspire them.

Boult out of England ODI series

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - New Zealand left-arm seamer Trent Boult was ruled out Thursday of the upcoming one-day series against England and is now set to miss the subsequent Champions Trophy tournament as well.Boult suffered a side injury during New Zealands 247-run second Test defeat at Headingley, concluded Tuesday, and bowled just two overs in Englands second innings. An MRI scan on Wednesday confirmed the initial diagnosis of a muscle tear in Boults right side, ruling him out of a three-match series with England starting at Lords on Friday and featuring matches in Southampton (Sunday) and Nottingham (Wednesday). In a New Zealand statement, Blackcaps physiotherapist Paul Close said he expected Boult to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks. That would sideline the paceman from the Champions Trophy, where New Zealand play their first match against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on June 9.Fellow pace bowler Ian Butler has replaced Boult for the England one-day series and is in line to take his place in the Champions Trophy squad.

11 vanish from Mexico City bar

German police warn of exploding ticket machines

Frankfurt (Web Desk) - German police are warning rail travellers to be wary when using Deutsche Bahns automatic ticket machines because criminals attempting to break into them may have left them filled with explosive gas.The Hesse state police spokesman, Udo Bühler, said since April criminals had successfully blown open 10 ticket machines by taping closed all holes, filling them with gas and igniting it.They then stole the money and blank train tickets inside. But in six cases the attempts have failed, leaving the explosive gas inside, most recently on Tuesday in a train station in the town of Karben, near Frankfurt.Bühler warned that the gas could potentially ignite when an unsuspecting customer used the machine, though so far it had not.He said incidents had also been reported in the neighbouring states of Thuringia and Lower Saxony.
