US releases $475m in Sandy aid Posted: WASHINGTON (AP) - The federal government is releasing more than $475 million to help repair the damage from Superstorm Sandy, which devastated the East Coast last autumn. The Interior Department said Tuesday the money will go for 234 projects that will repair and rebuild parks, refuges and other agency facilities damaged by the storm. Money will also go to historic preservation efforts and to investments in scientific data and studies to support recovery efforts.Sandy pounded several states in late October, especially New York and New Jersey. It was the deadliest hurricane in the northeastern U.S. in 40 years and the second-costliest in U.S. history.
Philippine volcano spews rocks, killing 5 climbers Posted: MANILA, Philippines (AP) - One of the Philippines' most active volcanoes rumbled to life Tuesday, spewing room-sized rocks toward nearly 30 surprised climbers, killing five and injuring others that had to be fetched with rescue helicopters and rope. The climbers and their Filipino guides had spent the night camping in two groups before setting out at daybreak for the crater of Mayon volcano when the sudden explosion of rocks, ash and plumes of smokes jolted the picturesque mountain, guide Kenneth Jesalva told ABS-CBN TV network by cellphone. He said rocks as big as a living room came raining down, killing and injuring members of his group, some of whom were in critical condition. Jesalva said he rushed back to the base camp at 914 meters (3,000 feet) to call for help.Among the dead were three Germans and their Filipino guide, said Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda. Another foreigner was presumed dead, but Salceda said everyone else on the mountain was accounted for by midday.Eight people were injured, and Salceda said the others were being brought down the mountain. Ash clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning. The injured are all foreigners ... they cannot walk. If you can imagine, the boulders there are as big as cars. Some of them slid and rolled down. We will rappel the rescue team, and we will rappel them up again, he said from Legazpi, the provincial capital at the foothill of the mountain. An Austrian mountaineer and two Spaniards were rescued with small bruises, he said.Tuesday's eruption was normal for the restive Mayon, said Renato Solidum, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) mountain about 340 kilometers (212 miles) southeast of Manila has erupted about 40 times during the last 400 years. In 2010, thousands of residents moved to temporary shelters when the volcano ejected ash up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater.Solidum said no alert was raised after the latest eruption and no evacuation was being planned.Climbers are not allowed when an alert is up, and the recent calm may have encouraged this week's trek. However, Solidum said that even with no alert raised, the immediate zone around the volcano is supposed to be a no-go area because of the risk of a sudden eruption.Salceda said he would enforce a ban on climbers.Despite the risks, Mayon and its near-perfect cone is a favorite spot for volcano watchers. Most enjoy the occasional nighttime spectacle of the rim lit by flowing lava, viewing from the safety of hotels in Legazpi. The volcano has a trail to the crater that is walkable though it's steep and strewn with rocks and debris from past eruptions.

It was best innings of my life, says Miller Posted: MOHALI (Web Desk) - Kings XI Punjab batsman David Miller has rated his unbeaten 101 of 38 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as his best innings ever.Probably, it is the best innings I have played. It is the fastest I have ever played, and definitely the most enjoyable one, Miller told to IPLT20. com.Millers knock of 101 not out off just 38 balls gave the Kings XI an unlikely victory against Royal Challengers at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium here Monday. The hosts were in deep trouble with the score on 64 for four, and the 191-run target seemed improbable. Miller though produced a heroic innings to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.Talking about his innings he said, Nothing much was really going through my mind when I came in to bat.We still needed 12 runs an over, and it was quite a lot of runs to get. And I suppose it allowed me the freedom to do what I did, which is just clear the ropes and not have too much pressure. So, it was really enjoyable, he added. In 2012, he featured only in a few IPL matches scoring a total of 98 runs with an average of 32.66 while this season he has already scored 352 runs with an average of 117.33.However, Miller said his batting approach has remained the same.Nothing much really has changed with my batting (compared to last IPL). In 2012, I came in for only six games and then was off. I think now getting the freedom of playing a few more games is really nice to know, mentally. And it is just one of those things where I am actually loving my cricket at the moment, he said.Even after his blitzkrieg innings, Miller rates Chris Gayle as the biggest hitter.Gayle is by far the biggest hitter ever and a great batsman as well. He is good to watch, he said. We have got another game in Bangalore and that should be interesting. After this win, Kings XI Punjab are back in the hunt for a playoffs spot.We have got to win, I think, four out of five games. So, there is obviously still a lot of games to play. We have just got to try and win it all, Miller said.

Tommie Frazier makes College Football Hall of Fame Posted: Its hard to get college football fans to agree on anything, but almost all smart fans were surprised and mildly outraged that Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier hadnt been voted into the College Football Hall of Fame before this year. One of the best quarterbacks who ever played college football somehow avoided getting voted in on his first two times on the ballot. He was snubbed just two times but it seemed like way more.Frazier should have been a first-ballot hall-of-fame pick. But thats in the past now, because the Sporting News reported that Frazier finally got the call and will join the 2013 College Football Hall of Fame class.Miami quarterback and 1986 Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde was already announced as one of the new hall of famers on Monday. There will be 12 players and two coaches announced as new members of the College Football Hall of Fame, and the announcement will be broadcast live on WatchESPN.com and the National Football Foundation website, footballfoundation.org.At least we already know Frazier finally got his just due this year.Frazier was a four-year starter who led Nebraska to national championships in 1994 and 1995. He was the MVP in the bowl game each of those years. And, in that last bowl game, he gave us a moment for the ages:Frazier never put up big passing numbers, because thats not what he was asked to do in Nebraskas mauling offense. But he was efficient when he did throw, passing for 43 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions in his career. He rushed for 36 touchdowns, and ran the Cornhuskers offense to perfection. He finished his career with a 33-3 record as a starter. Nebraskas teams during his four-year run were loaded, but part of the reason they were loaded is they had a brilliant quarterback. Frazier finished second to Eddie George in the 1995 Heisman Trophy race and was named to the first team on eight All-American squads.People who watched Frazier play have known for a long time he was a hall of famer. The National Football Foundation vote just makes it official.
