Turkey PM floats referendum to end Istanbul park protest

Posted:

ANKARA (AP) - The Turkish government is open to holding a referendum over an Istanbul development plan that has had a central role in nearly two weeks of mass protests, a spokesman for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party said Wednesday. The announcement following talks between Erdogan and a group of activists amounts to the first big gesture by his government to end a standoff with protesters in Istanbul's Taksim Square and around the country. But on a more defiant note, Justice and Development Party spokesman Huseyin Celik also said the government would not allow the ongoing sit-in in Gezi Park, next to the square, to continue until doomsday a sign that authorities' patience is running out.The prospect of a referendum amounts to a political gamble by Erdogan, who has drawn the ire of protesters over his alleged authoritarian streak. He appeared to be betting that his strong base of support would vote for the plans. The protests erupted May 31 after a violent police crackdown on a peaceful sit-in by activists objecting to the project to replace Gezi Park with a replica Ottoman-era barracks. They then spread to 78 cities across the country and have attracted tens of thousands of people nearly every night.Celik said the referendum would be on the Ottoman-era barracks. But he said it would exclude the planned demolition of a cultural center that the protesters also oppose; Celik said the center was in an earthquake-prone area, and needed to come down.Erdogan hosted the 11 activists including academics, students and artists in his offices in Ankara. Some leaders of civil society groups, including Greenpeace, had said they would not participate because of an environment of violence in the country.Meanwhile, police and protesters retrenched after fierce overnight clashes in Taksim Square. In Ankara and Istanbul, thousands of lawyers railed against the alleged rough treatment of dozens of their colleagues, who police briefly detained in Istanbul on the sidelines of Tuesday's unrest.Sema Aksoy, the deputy head of the Ankara lawyer's association, said the lawyers were handcuffed and pulled over the ground. She called the police action an affront to Turkey's judicial system.Lawyers can't be dragged on the ground the demonstrating lawyers shouted in rhythm as they marched out of an Istanbul courthouse. Riot police stood off to the side, shields at the ready.Turkey's Human Rights Foundation said Istanbul prosecutors had launched an investigation into allegations of excessive use of police force during the protests. The foundation said 620 people, including a 1-year-old baby, were injured during the police crackdown early Wednesday. Police detained around 70 people during the incidents. Prior to this, activists reported that 5,000 people had been injured or seriously affected by the tear gas and four people have died in the protests. After Tuesday's violence, traffic returned to Taksim Square with taxis, trucks and pedestrians back on the streets. At one point, some police were seen kicking a soccer ball on the square. Riot police stood to the side, near a new barricade of wrecked cars and construction material that activists put up to impede their ability to fire tear gas on the park.Hundreds of protesters remained camped out in Gezi Park, clearing up after a night of trying to fend off tear gas. An early morning storm blew down tents and soaked bedding. Donations of food and supplies including tents, sleeping bags and toilet paper continued to arrive. On Tuesday, riot police firing water cannons and tear gas clashed all day and night with pockets of protesters throwing stones and setting off fireworks. The pitched battles didn't simmer down until just before dawn. The protests are drawing expressions of concern from abroad.Germany's government was following the news from Turkey with great preoccupation, especially the images of yesterday's police action, Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday. Now de-escalation is needed. Only an open dialogue can contribute to easing the situation.

US cautions Turkey on punishing protestors

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Wednesday cautioned Turkish authorities against seeking to punish any demonstrators merely for exercising their right to free speech.Nationwide unrest in Turkey first erupted after police cracked down heavily on May 31 on a campaign to save an Istanbul park from redevelopment, spiraling into mass displays of anger against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The under-fire prime minister on Wednesday met with protest representatives after a night of heavy clashes as police battled to retake an Istanbul square which has become the focal point of the protests.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States had been following the events with great concern. We're troubled by any attempts to punish individuals for exercising their right to free speech, and we condemn attempts by any party to provoke violence, she told reporters. We believe that Turkey's long-term stability, security and prosperity is best guaranteed by upholding the fundamental freedoms of expression, assembly, association and a free and independent media. And we expect the Turkish authorities to uphold those freedoms.

CIA deputy director Morell steps down

CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell has announced his retirement Wednesday.WASHINGTON (AP) - CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell retired from his post Wednesday, after managing the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus over an extramarital affair and defending the agency's performance over the attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.Morell was passed over for the top CIA spot by President Barack Obama in favor of his counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, who announced Morrell's departure Wednesday.Brennan said Morell will be replaced by Avril Haines, currently a deputy assistant to the president and legal adviser at the National Security Council.Morell agreed to the State Department's request to remove a reference to militants in a controversial memo of talking points on the Libya attack.Morell also drew criticism for stating that the CIA's interrogation program produced some useful information.

US, Britain must do more to save Syrian lives: Hague

Posted:

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2013 (AFP) - Britain and its allies must be prepared to do more to save innocent lives in Syria, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Wednesday after talks with his US counterpart John Kerry. The United Kingdom believes that the situation demands a strong, coordinated, and determined approach by the UK, the US, and our allies in Europe and the region, Hague told a joint press conference.Calling the conflict in Syria the most urgent crisis anywhere in the world today, Hague warned the regime of President Bashar al-Assad seems to be preparing new assaults, endangering the lives and safety of hundreds of Syrians who are already in desperate need. The scale of the regime's repression and the human suffering that it has caused beggars belief -- a campaign of murder and tyranny that they have waged for more than 800 days now. It is not only a moral outrage -- it's a grave threat to the wider region, the British minister said.He confirmed that he had discussed the Syrian conflict, now in its third year, with Kerry in their talks, saying the innocent victims of war and repression had been at the forefront of our minds. But both men said they had no decisions to announce amid a growing clamor for Western nations to start arming the opposition rebels to help them fight off growing gains by Assad's regime backed by thousands of Hezbollah militants.Kerry insisted the goal of diplomatic efforts was to reach a political solution and transition of power that gives the Syrian people the chance to have a new beginning where they choose their future leadership. We have said that we will do everything we can, that we are able to do, to help the opposition achieve that goal and to reach a point where that can be implemented, and that's what we trying to do, Kerry said.He said the US administration was meeting to talk about various balances in this issue right now.Assad's choice of weapons challenges anybody's standards of human behavior and we're going to have to make judgments ourselves about how we're going to be able to help the opposition deal with that. But Kerry stressed: Nobody wins in Syria the way things are going. The people lose and Syria as a country loses.Hague agreed that the focus of their efforts was a political solution. But we will have to be prepared to do more to save lives, to pressure the Assad regime to negotiate seriously and to prevent the growth of extremism and terrorism if diplomatic efforts are going to succeed, he warned.

Federer into Halle quarters on grass return

Posted:

HALLE (AFP) - Defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer made a seamless transition from clay to grass on Wednesday as he cruised into the quarter-finals of the ATP Halle Open after brushing aside German wildcard Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-3, 6-3.Federer, who is using the tournament as a tune-up for the defence of his title at the All England Club later this month, needed just 67 minutes to see off Stebe in what was the Swiss star's first outing since losing to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last eight at Roland Garros.I was satisfied with my performance even if there were things I could have done better, said the world number three.I hope to get stronger with each match, he added.Federer, a five-time winner at the ATP event in Germany but without a title to his name this season, came out firing immediately with a break of serve in the opening game as he raced 5-1 ahead, only to squander a chance to close it out before breaking Stebe for a third time to take the set.A service break in the second game of the second set then proved decisive as Federer sealed his passage into the quarters.Asked if he felt a pressing urge to win a tournament, Federer, 31, replied: This year, yes, but not right now. Any title is good for your confidence. I want to be in the best position to do well here in Halle then at Wimbledon. I feel that my best chance is here.Next up for the 17-time Grand Slam champion is another German in World No.156 Mischa Zverev, who beat Bosnia's Mirza Basic 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 earlier Wednesday.Meanwhile, fourth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan was stunned by Russian veteran Mikhail Youznhy 6-1, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3 in round two.Youzhny, 30, will face one of German pair Philipp Kohlschreiber, the sixth seed, or Tobias Kamke in the next round. The Russian reached the Halle semi-finals last season where he was beaten by Federer. It was world number 13 Nishikori's opening match in the tournament having been given a first round bye.And he was slow out in getting used to the grass as world number 29 Youzhny, who became an instant YouTube hit during Roland Garros after smashing his racket nine times against his chair in a fit during his defeat to Tommy Haas, breezed through the first set.Nishikori, who reached the fourth round at the French Open, before losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal, found his feet and battled with Youzny for more than two hours before finally succumbing to defeat. It's tough to play him in the first match. He started well and I was missing a lot, said the Japanese.I started playing well in the second set but in the last game he took his chance. I have to prepare for Wimbledon now.Nishikori said he wished the grass court season was longer to give players more time to adapt to the little-used surface. It's not easy because it's played only a few weeks during the year. I like the idea of a longer season on grass. Wimbledon is everybody's dream to play.

Cilic, Berdych, Hewitt reach 3rd round at Queen's

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Defending champion Marin Cilic and second-seeded Tomas Berdych advanced to the third round at Queen's Club on Wednesday, but top seeded Andy Murray's bid to join them was frustrated after rain forced his match to be suspended.Murray's match against Nicolas Mahut was called off after the Scot took the opening set 6-3 and with the second set level at 2-2.The No. 5-seeded Cilic was never under pressure with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Croat Ivand Dodig, who failed to earn a break point.Cilic won the title last year when David Nalbandian was defaulted for violent conduct after he kicked an advertising sign and injured a line judge.Berdych held off a strong second-set challenge from Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker to win 6-1, 6-4.It was the Czech's first appearance at the pre-Wimbledon grass event since he was defeated in the first round in 2005.The No. 2-seeded Berdych dominated the opening set and won 70 percent of the points, but after a short rain delay at the start of the second set De Bakker held six break points before Berdych earned a vital break to lead 4-3.I think it's a preparation for Wimbledon with everything, especially these tough moments, said Berdych of the rain-interuption. It's also good to know how to handle that, and I did it quite well. So I'm happy for it.Murray, who won the title in 2009 and 2011, was beaten by Mahut at the same stage of last year's tournament, but there looked little danger of a repeat in the first set.The Frenchman, who has been granted a wild card for Wimbledon, offered considerable resistance. But Murray won two of the seven break points he earned to take the opening set.Rain then forced the players off court. Although they resumed play, only one game was completed before another break, and play was then suspended for a third time.Fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga failed to get on court, and two further matches were suspended.Former four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt claimed a 6-4, 6-3 upset victory over 10th seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.Eighth-seeded South African Kevin Anderson withdrew with a shoulder injury and was replaced in the draw by Rohan Bopanna of India. Frenchman Michael Llodra also withdrew because of a hamstring injury, giving Australian Marinko Matosevic a walkover into the third round.

Bolt keen to break 20sec mark in Bislett 200m

Posted:

OSLO (AP) - Usain Bolt hopes to bounce back from a rare defeat with a convincing victory in the 200 meters at the Bislett Games on Thursday. The Jamaican, who lost to American Justin Gatlin in the 100 in Rome last week, is aiming to be the first to break the 20-second mark this season, in his first long sprint of the year.I'm feeling pretty good, I think I'm in shape to run under 20 seconds. It's all about the execution and getting it right, Bolt said ahead of the Diamond League meeting.Bolt has his sights set on Frank Fredericks' track record of 19.82, set by the Namibian in 1996, and will be pushed by local challenger Jaysuma Saidy Ndure, who is also aiming to beat 20 seconds. This is home for me so I have to at least try to run as fast as I can, the Gambia-born Ndure said. This is like the world championships for me.European 200 champion Churandy Martina of the Netherlands and Curtis Mitchell of the U.S. are also running.Bolt said he has recovered from the hamstring injury that hampered his start to the season. He won a photo finish in 10.09 in the Cayman Islands last month his slowest career performance in a 100-meter final. Now it's all about pushing myself in races to run myself into shape, Bolt said. I'm really happy with how I'm feeling, I just need more races under my belt.Bolt, the 100 and 200 world record-holder, isn't worried about his slight dip in form and says he's concentrating only on defending his titles at the worlds in Moscow in August. As long as my coach is not worried, I'm not worried, and my coach is not worried, Bolt said.Such is the buzz generated by the Jamaican that other competitions can get overlooked. However, the women's high jump is also a highlight on Thursday.Olympic and world champion Anna Chicherova goes head-to-head with two-time world champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia, while local interest focuses on Tonje Angelsen, the Norwegian who is looking forward to competing against her idols.I've always looked up to them. I want to jump two meters as many times as they have, said Angelsen, the 2012 European silver medalist.Chicherova, who turns 31 next month, is coming off a victory in Rome and no one has come within three centimeters of the 2.02 she jumped in Beijing last month.I hope to get a good height, but Rome took some strength and the weather may be a surprise, but I will do what I can, said Chicherova, who rejected suggestions that age is catching up with her.If you have the motivation and strength you can jump, the Russian said.Vlasic isn't yet at full fitness after a long spell out with an Achilles injury. My heel is getting better. It's coming back, Vlasic said. I'm very excited and motivated, as if it was the beginning of my career. The Croatian is hoping to improve her modest season's best of 1.95 set in Rome. After nine months off from jumping and only being back in spikes since February, I need to get used to jumping big heights again, she said.Olympic champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia is the star attraction in the women's 5,000 meters, where she will be challenged by compatriot Genzebe Dibaba, younger sister of her greatest rival, the world record-holder Tirunesh Dibaba.Mercy Cherono and Viola Kibiwot are providing the Kenyan challenge.Two-time Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen can count on vociferous support from the home crowd in the javelin. The Norwegian faces a tough competition from Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad, and Finland's Tero Pitkamaki, who threw a world-leading 87.60 meters last month.Olympic silver medalist Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic is the favorite in the men's 400, while Ivory Coast sprinter Murielle Ahoure is hotly tipped for the women's 100, as is Ukrainian Olha Saladukha in the women's triple jump.

Dollar lower against euro, yen

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar slipped again Wednesday amid more volatility across asset markets, as traders sought direction following Tuesday's big Japan-driven shift. After an early, rally the dollar fell to 95.88 yen at 2200 GMT, compared to 96.01 yen late Tuesday.A rebound against the euro also reversed to a loss, with the euro at $1.3335 in late trade, up from $1.3311 a day earlier. The impact of the Japanese central bank's decision to hold the policy unchanged Tuesday, rather than adding more stimulus, continued to reverberate through the markets. That added to the expectations in markets that more stimulus was unlikely in the advanced economies, and fueled a rush out of emerging economy stocks and currencies in anticipation of rising yen, dollar and euro rates. The euro meanwhile was helped by a better-than-expected 0.4 percent gain in eurozone industrial production in April over March, according to Eurostat data.April marked the third monthly increase running and was significantly better than the consensus forecast for no change, Capital Economics said in a note.If the upturn continues, then the three months to June could see growth of 0.2 percent, after the economy shrank 0.2 percent in the first quarter, it said. The euro rose to 127.86 yen from 127.81The dollar's softening came despite another rise in US Treasury yields, with bond traders clearly still expecting the Federal Reserve to begin reining in its quantitative easing bond-buying program within a few months -- despite the apparent soft patch the US and global economies have entered. The British pound also gained on the greenback, to $1.5677 from $1.5644. And the dollar fell to 0.9208 Swiss francs from 0.9246 francs.

Oil rises to $96, reverses 2 days of losses

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - In New York, benchmark oil for July delivery rose 50 cents to finish at $95.88 a barrel. Oil lost a combined 65 cents a barrel Monday and Tuesday.Oil-related news was mixed Wednesday, and the price bounced between $94.46 and $96.45.The International Energy Agency cut its forecast for global crude demand in 2013 by 80,000 barrels a day. It now expects the world to consume 90.6 million barrels a day this year, 785,000 barrels a day more than in 2012.But the Paris-based IEA, an umbrella group for oil-consuming nations, expects consumption to be somewhat higher toward the end of the year.Demand is forecast to be 1.1 million barrels a day higher in the fourth quarter of 2013 compared with the same period in 2012.The IEA said OPECs output in May reached 30.89 million barrels a day, the highest in seven months, and significantly above the voluntary limit of 30 million barrels which the organization reaffirmed at its latest meeting on May 31.OPECs higher production, rising crude output in the U.S. and sluggish demand have helped keep oil prices below $100 a barrel since May of last year.In the U.S., the Energy Department reported that oil supplies rose last week by 2.5 million barrels, or 0.6 percent, to 393.8 million barrels, which is 2.4 percent above year-ago levels.Meanwhile, Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 53 cents to $103.49 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Rain adds to Australia anguish

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Rain provided further frustration for Australia, on a day when they dropped David Warner for a bar-room attack on England's Joe Root, as their Champions Trophy match against New Zealand ended in a no result.Wednesday's wash-out at Edgbaston left defending champions Australia facing a tough battle to qualify for the semi-finals.New Zealand, chasing 244 to win, were on 51 for two off 15 overs when rain stopped play in the Group A clash at 3.40pm local time (1440GMT).Under the Duckworth/Lewis system for rain-affected matches, a minimum of 20 overs had to be bowled in the second innings for either side to win this fixture. But at 6.25pm (1725GMT), the umpires decided no further play was possible. The first no result of the tournament saw both sides take a point apiece. That left New Zealand with three points after their one-wicket win over Sri Lanka and gave Australia their first point of this event after a 48-run loss to hosts England at Edgbaston last week.Australia, already without captain Michael Clarke because of a recurrence of his longstanding back problem, suffered a fresh blow before play started when opening batsman Warner was dropped as a disciplinary measure.Warner was left out following allegations he'd physically assaulted Root in a Birmingham bar in the early hours of Sunday morning following the defeat by England. The situation, for us, believe it or not, was bigger than this, said Australia stand-in captain George Bailey, leading Australia in the absence of the still injured Michael Clarke. It was about making sure we won this game to stay in the tournament and to play some better cricket than we have against England. And I guess with this sort of result, I'm not sure we've done that.Australia now need to beat Sri Lanka at The Oval on Monday and hope other results go their way if they are to make the semi-finals.Adam Voges' top-scored with 71 in Australia's 243 for eight against New Zealand, with Bailey making 55 for a second successive match after winning the toss.New Zealand left-arm quick Mitchell McClenaghan took four for 65.There was a moment of unintentional humour before play started when, during a montage of messages from team captains on the giant screens at Edgbaston, Clarke urged spectators to drink within their boundaries. But there was nothing funny for Australia about a collapse to 10 for two in what was a repeat of the 2009 Champions Trophy final they won in South Africa.Shane Watson was caught behind off McClenaghan and Phillip Hughes was run out for nought by Martin Guptill, racing in from cover. But coming in at 10 for two, Bailey -- who said Tuesday now was not the time for Australia panic stations -- calmly repaired the early damage.New Zealand off-spinner Nathan McCullum (two for 46) checked Australia's progress with the wickets of Matthew Wade and Bailey.Voges fell when he holed out off McClenaghan. But Glenn Maxwell, brought in for Warner, added late impetus with an unbeaten 29 off just 22 balls including two sixes and a four. The Black Caps' reply started in fine style when Luke Ronchi, a former Australia international now playing for his native New Zealand, drove Mitchell Johnson through the covers for four. But New Zealand were soon 26 for two as Clint McKay had Guptill caught at point and Ronchi taken at gully.New Zealand's final group match is against England in Cardiff on Sunday.

ESPN to kill 3-D broadcasts by year end

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - ESPN says it will stop broadcasting in 3-D by the end of the year, dealing a major blow to a technology that was launched with great fanfare but has been limping along for years. The sports network says there were too few viewers to make 3-D broadcasts worth it. It didnt say exactly how many it had, but the number was extremely limited and not growing.ESPN 3D was one of nine 3-D channels that launched in the years following the late 2009 release of James Camerons Avatar. But the TV sets required viewers to wear glasses, and many people felt the 3-D effect didnt add much.TV makers have turned their focus to increasing the resolution their sets to Ultra HDTV and getting broadcasts to take advantage of that.

Pak airspace violation due to technical fault: India

Posted:

NEW DELHI (Online) - As per media reports, the comments come after Pakistan on Tuesday accused Indian jets of briefly violating its airspace, days after India said one of its soldiers had been killed by Pakistani troops. The jets were taking part in a routine mission along the India-Pakistan border on Tuesday when the incident occurred, Indian Air Force (IAF) spokeswoman Priya Joshi said.It is clarified that IAF aircraft which were on a routine flying training sortie seem to have flown close to the border and it appears to be a technical violation, Joshi told foreign media agency. She said the incident has been conveyed to the Pakistan authorities. An agreement between the rival South Asian neighbours bans their military aircraft from flying within 10 kilometres (six miles) of each others airspace or initiate cross-border intrusions.Pakistans foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it had conveyed serious concern to the Indian High Commission (embassy) over the airspace violation over its eastern province of Punjab.Pakistan scrambled two fighter jets after the border crossing by two Indian planes.ndia accused Pakistan last week of fomenting militancy in the Indian state of Punjab and killing a soldier in cross-border firing. Pakistan rejected both allegations.

MQM, KCCI flay increase in GST

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Online) - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr. Farooq Sattar on Wednesday slammed the federal government for increasing general sales tax (GST) from 16 to 17 percent.Reacting to the federal budget 2013-14 issued by the government, Dr. Sattar said that the government’s decision to increase the GST would trigger a new tsunami of inflation and price hike.He said that the GST should have been brought down to 16 percent.Dr. Sattar said that no tax was imposed on the privileged class. He said that the whole burden was transferred to the middle class and less privileged section of the country. He was of the view that n cut was announced in tariff of electricity, gas and water. One per cent increase in General Sales Tax (GST) as announced in the federal budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year would lead to high inflation, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) leader Siraj Qasim Teli said on Wednesday. In his reaction at the KCCI office about the federal budget 2013-14, Siraj Qasim Teli said that GST would directly put burden on the people. He said that it was a budget made by the bureaucrats, violating the law.“We will identify the mistakes made by the government in the budget,” he said. The KCCI leader said that the real stake holders were not consulted this time about the budget proposals. He, however, said that it was a good budget on issues relating to water, power and motorways. He also welcomed the government’s decision to continue the income support programme.
