Series of attacks kill 51 people across Iraq

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A blistering string of apparently coordinated bombings and a shooting across Iraq killed at least 51 and wounded dozens Sunday, spreading fear throughout the country in a wave of violence that is raising the prospect of a return to widespread sectarian killing a decade after a U.S.-led invasion.Violence has spiked sharply in Iraq in recent months, with the death toll rising to levels not seen since 2008. Nearly 2,000 have been killed since the start of April, including more than 180 this month. The surge in bloodshed accompanies rising sectarian tensions within Iraq and growing concerns that its unrest is being fanned by the Syrian civil war raging next door. One of the deadliest attacks came in the evening when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a cafe packed with young people in the largely Shiite neighborhood of al-Ameen in southeastern Baghdad. The attack killed 11 and wounded 25, according to police.Clothes shop owner Saif Hameed, 24, was watching TV at home when he heard the blast nearby. He saw several of the wounded being loaded into ambulances. It seems the terrorists are targeting any place they can, no matter what it is, he said. The main things for them are to kill as many Iraqis as they can and keep the people living in fear. Most of Sundays car bombs hit Shiite-majority areas and caused most of the casualties. The blasts hit half a dozen cities and towns in the south and center of the country. There was no claim of responsibility for any of the attacks, but they bore the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq, which uses car bombs, suicide bombers and coordinated attacks, most aimed at security forces and members of Iraqs Shiite majority. The U.S. Embassy condemned the attacks, saying it stands with Iraqis who seek to live in peace and who reject cowardly acts of terrorism such as this. The U.S. withdrew its last combat troops from Iraq in December 2011, though a small number remain as an arm of the embassy to provide training and facilitate arms sales.Sundays blasts began with a parked car bomb exploding early in the morning in the industrial area of the city of Kut, killing six people and wounding 15 others. That was followed by another car bomb outside the city that targeted construction workers. It killed five and wounded 12, according to police. In a teahouse hit by one of the blasts, a blood-stained tribal headdress and slippers were strewn on the floor, alongside overturned chair and couches. Kut is 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. In the oil-rich city of Basra in southern Iraq, a car bomb exploded on a busy downtown street. As police and rescuers rushed to the scene of the initial blast, a second car exploded. Six people were reported killed. Cleaners were seen sweeping up pieces of the car bomb, which damaged nearby cars and shops.About an hour later, parked car bombs ripped through two neighborhoods in the southern city of Nasiriyah, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing two and wounding 19, police said.In the Shiite holy city of Najaf, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Baghdad, a blast struck a produce market, killing eight and wounding 28.Watermelons, tomatoes and apples were seen scattered on the ground. A bulldozer loaded charred and twisted stalls and cars into a waiting truck.Blasts were also reported in the communities of Hillah, Mahmoudiya and Madain, all south of Baghdad, killing seven in total. In the northern city of Tuz Khormato, a roadside bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen. The shooting broke out near the restive northern city of Mosul. Police officials say gunmen attacked police guarding a remote stretch of an oil pipeline, killing four and wounding five. Mosul, some 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, has been the scene of some of the deadliest unrest outside the Baghdad area in recent weeks.Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they werent allowed to release the information to reporters. The attacks came a day after the leader of al-Qaidas Iraq arm, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, defiantly rejected an order from the terror networks central command to stop claiming control over the organizations Syria affiliate, according to a message purportedly from him.Abu Bakr al-Baghdadis comments reveal his groups determination to link its own fight against the Shiite-led government in Baghdad with the cause of rebels trying to topple the Iran-backed Syrian regime.

Putin, Cameron still hopeful on Syria peace talks

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - The leaders of Britain and Russia said Sunday theyre hopeful that Syrias warring factions can hammer out their differences at upcoming peace talks tentatively planned for next month in Geneva.Speaking at British Prime Ministers David Camerons Downing Street office, Russian President Vladimir Putin said both nations are still pressing for talks between representatives of Syrian ruler Bashar Assad and the disparate rebel movement that seeks to drive him from power.Asked whether the proposed introduction of a no fly zone over parts of Syria or moves by Western powers to funnel weapons to Syrias rebels had sabotaged the peace talks, Putin said no.I dont think that the idea of the conference is buried for good, he said. This is one of the most reasonable and acceptable ways of solving this problem. Only by joint efforts is it possible to definitively settle the problem and persuade the warring sides to sit down for talks.Last week, the White House announced the Obama administration has agreed, after months of hesitation, to start supplying the rebels with upgraded military aid. Russia and European powers, including Britain and France, are at loggerheads over the issue of supplying arms to the different sides of the Syrian conflict, with Russia sending weapons to Assads military, while reacting angrily to any move on the part of Western nations to do the same to his opponents.Putin defended the distinction Sunday, saying that Russia was providing arms to the legitimate government of Syria in full conformity with the norms of international law.Cameron acknowledged that Russia and Britain are in opposition but told journalists there is still common ground. It is no secret that President Putin and I have had our disagreements on some of these issues, but what I take from our conversation today is that we can overcome these differences if we recognize that we share some fundamental aims: to end this conflict; to stop Syria breaking apart; to let the Syrian choose who governs them; and to take the fight to the extremists and defeat them.Although Britain was one of the leaders in the push to lift the European arms embargo on Syrian rebel forces, Camerons government faces a considerable amount of opposition should it move to arm the revolutionaries.Lawmakers from across the political spectrum have expressed unease with the idea of sending weapons to Syria, with many warning they could end up in the hands of Muslim extremists loyal to al-Qaida.Julian Lewis, from Camerons Conservative Party, said earlier Sunday that sending weapons to the rebels would be suicidal. In the past we have gone to war because we feared that weapons of mass destruction might fall into the hands of al-Qaida, and it would be absolutely crazy to assist al-Qaida to get their hands on the very sorts of weapons we must keep away from them at all costs, he told BBC radio.Putin was in London ahead of the G8 summit of world leaders in Northern Ireland, which begins next week. The topic of Syria and what to do end the conflict there is not on the official agenda but is expected to be discussed.

Israel, for instance, collects some tax and customs money for the Palestinians.

Murray beats Cilic to win Queen's for 3rd time

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Top-seeded Andy Murray rallied to beat defending champion Marin Cilic 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to win the Queens Club tournament for the third time.It was the 27th career title for the Briton, who also claimed the trophy in 2009 and 11, and his second of the season after winning at Miami in March.Murray held an early advantage, breaking to lead 2-0 and then fighting off three break points in the next game.Cilic broke back at 4-2 on his sixth break point of the set and held off two break points to hold for 4-4.Murray yelled in agony in that eighth game after straining his groin in a stretch but continued without treatment. Murray then saved break point with an ace to hold for 5-4, was broken at 5-5 and was unable to convert two break points as Cilic served out the set.In the second set, Murray failed to win three break points at 3-2 but broke for the set when Cilic netted a forehand.Murray dominated the final set, going 3-1 ahead when Cilic made a forehand error before closing out the match on his second match point. The match was delayed for more than three hours by rain.

Hantuchova wins Aegon Classic in straight sets

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AP) - Slovakias Daniela Hantuchova won her sixth career title on Sunday, beating Croatian teenager Donna Vekic 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to win the Aegon Classic.Fourteen years separated the two finalists but there was little between 16-year-old Vekic and the 60th-ranked Hantuchova. The Slovak struck first in the opening set, breaking her opponents serve to lead 4-3 but Vekic hit back immediately to level the score.Hantuchova dominated the tiebreaker, however, and despite throwing away a 5-2 lead regained control to win 7-5.The second set was just as tight as the first but a break of serve at 5-4 proved decisive for Hantuchova, who sealed a straight sets win.

Mario Balotelli powers Italy past Mexico 2-1

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Mario Balotelli showed off his strength and rapidly developing talent by scoring the winner in Italys 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday at the Confederations Cup.In the 78th minute, Balotelli collected a perfectly placed acrobatic pass from Emanuele Giaccherini and muscled in between two defenders to break a deadlock in the first official match at the renovated Maracana Stadium.Celebrating his 100th appearance with the national team, Andrea Pirlo had given Italy the lead with one of his trademark free kicks in the 27th. Mexico equalized in the 34th, when Javier Chicharito Hernandez converted a penalty kick after Andrea Barzagli tripped Giovani Dos Santos. In an entertaining Group A match, Italy dominated possession while Mexico relied on counterattacks, coming close when Andres Guardado hit the crossbar in the 11th.Italy moved level with Brazil on three points in the group after the hosts beat Japan 3-0 in the tournament opener Saturday. The Azzurri had not impressed in their last two matches, drawing with both the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier and with Haiti upon arriving in Brazil earlier this week, but Pirlo and Balotelli made the difference this time. For his 13th goal with Italy, Pirlo curled a spinning shot over Mexicos wall into the top left corner after Balotelli earned the foul that set up the dead-ball shot from 30 meters (yards) out.Mexicos equalizer came after Barzagli let Dos Santos get by him to set up Hernandezs 33rd goal in 51 appearances for Mexico. The 25-year-old Hernandez, who plays for Manchester United, is on course to better the Mexico record of 42 goals held by former great Jared Borgetti. As usual, the temperamental Balotelli by turn misbehaved and by turn proved unstoppable. At one point midway through the second half, Balotelli kicked his boot across the area after being thwarted by Mexicos stubborn defense. But the AC Milan striker finally broke through as the match appeared headed for a draw, holding off Mexico captain Francisco Rodriguez then powering past another defender, Hiram Mier, to slot the ball in as he skidded across the grass. Much like at last years European Championship, when he scored both goals in a 2-1 semifinal win over Germany and pulled off his shirt after one of them, Balotelli reacted by stripping off his jersey to show off his muscular physique, earning a yellow card.Perhaps worried that he might pick up a second yellow card, as in the match against the Czech Republic, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli replaced Balotelli in the 85th with Alberto Gilardino. Balotelli walked off to a warm reception from the sold-out crowd. For Mexico, which entered amid a stuttering World Cup qualifying campaign, the loss will extend pressure on coach Jose Manuel De la Torre. However, the Mexican side showed promise and came close to taking the lead in the second half.Mexico has won only one of six qualifiers with three goals scored, and failed to find the target at all in its last two drawn matches against Panama and Costa Rica.Despite their squads recent troubles, Mexican fans, many of them wearing their customary sombreros, hugely outnumbered blue-clad Italian supporters on a comfortable afternoon. In the next round of Group A matches Wednesday, Italy next faces Japan in Recife and Mexico plays Brazil in Fortaleza.

Rose wins US Open, more heartache for Mickelson

Posted:

ARDMORE (AP) - A steady hand gave Justin Rose the U.S. Open Trophy. A wild ride gave Phil Mickelson yet another second place.Rose captured his first major championship on Sunday with remarkable calm and three pure shots on the punishing closing holes at Merion.A par on the 18th hole gave him an even-par 70, and that was good enough to become the first Englishman in 43 years to win Americas national championship.Rose hit 5-iron to the first cut of rough, pin-high on the 17th for an easy par. He smashed the most important tee shot of his career down the middle on the final hole, about 10 yards short of the famous Ben Hogan plaque. And his approach rolled near the pin and settled against the collar of the green. When I came over the hill and saw my ball laying in the fairway, I thought, This is my moment. It was me hitting from the middle of the fairway, Rose said.As usual, someones big moment in the U.S. Open came at Mickelsons expense.Rose was in the scoring area a half-mile from the grandstands behind the 18th green where the fans began to chant, Lets go Phil as Mickelson paced off a last-ditch effort to force a playoff. It was a long shot the 18th hole didnt yield a single birdie all weekend. From about 40 yards away, Mickelsons chip for birdie raced by the cup, securing Roses victory.Mickelson, already in the U.S. Open record book with five second-place finishes, added another that will hurt as much any of them.Sunday was his 43rd birthday. It was the first time he was equipped with the outright lead going into the last day. His week began with a cross-country trip home to San Diego to watch his oldest daughter graduate from the eighth grade, returning just three hours before his tee time on Thursday. This was the same daughter born the day after his first runner-up finish in 1999.All the stars were aligned. None of the putts fell in.What hurt Mickelson even more was a wedge from about 121 yards on the 15th hole. It should have given him a good look at birdie, but it came up so short that Mickelsons best chance was to use one of his five wedges to chip from the front of the green. He hit that one too far, 25 feet by the hole, and the bogey wound up costing him a chance at the major he covets.Mickelson ended up with a bogey on the 18th for a 74 and tied for second with Jason Day, who closed with a 71.Heartbreak, Mickelson said. This is tough to swallow after coming so close. This was my best chance of all of them. I had a golf course I really liked. I felt this was as good an opportunity as you could ask for. It really hurts.

Lorenzo wins Catalonia GP ahead of Pedrosa

Posted:

BARCELONA (AP) - Jorge Lorenzo held off Honda pair Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez to win the Catalonia Grand Prix on Sunday, tightening the overall championship race. The defending world champion started from third on the grid but pushed his Yamaha in front of polesitter Pedrosa before the first curve and never looked back.My start was very important, said Lorenzo. I started even better than I had hoped and was able to get by Dani. Then it was cat and mouse for a while before I could open up a gap.Lorenzos third win in six races this season and 26th career MotoGP victory left him in second place with 116 points.Pedrosa crossed the line second and leads the standings with 123. Marquez completed the Spanish sweep in front of the home fans. The newcomer is third with 93 points.Track temperatures reached 51 degrees Celsius, leading to several riders crashing out when their tires lost grip on the 4.73-kilometer (2.94-mile) Circuit de Catalunya.Lorenzo needed a flawless performance to keep Pedrosa at bay during the middle stretch of the race. After that point, Pedrosa was more concerned with maintaining second place with Marquez putting up a tough challenge right to the end.Seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi finished in fourth place, more than five seconds off Lorenzos pace. Briton Cal Crutchlow, who started from second on the grid, spun out on a curve while running fourth.Pedrosa said that the high temperatures gave all the riders trouble. At the beginning I was pretty comfortable with Jorge, but then the tires started to degrade and all three of us went slower, Pedrosa said. I was a long distance from Jorge and could never get close enough to try and overtake him. It was easy to fall so I didnt want to take any chances. In Moto2, Spanish pair Pol Espargaro and Esteve Rabat separated from the pack early on and cruised to a one-two finish for their Tuenti HP team.Thomas Luthi of Switzerland finished third ahead of Britains Scott Redding.Redding commands a comfortable lead with 114 points. Espargaro is next with 79 in front of Rabat with 75.In Moto3, Luis Salom outlasted fellow Spaniards Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales to win the race from pole and move to the top of the points standings. Rins was second followed by Vinales.Saloms third win this season gave him 127 points. Vinales is second with 122, and Rins in third on 101.Spanish riders took eight of nine podium spots on the day.

US woman sentenced to die at 16 to be released

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indiana woman put on death row at age 16 for killing an elderly Bible school teacher is being released.Paula Cooper's death sentence at such a young age drew international protests and a plea for clemency from Pope John Paul II. Now at age 43, Cooper is set to be freed Monday. She was 15 on May 14, 1985, when she and two other teenage girls entered 78-year-old Ruth Pelke's home in Gary by telling her they were interested in Bible lessons. Once inside, Cooper stabbed Pelke 33 times before the girls ransacked the house. The Indiana Supreme Court set Cooper's death sentence aside in 1988 and ordered her to serve 60 years in prison after state legislators raised the minimum age limit for execution from 10 to 16.

England beat New Zealand to reach CT semifinals

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - England put a ball-tampering row behind them to book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with a 10-run win over New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday.New Zealand, chasing 170 for victory in a match reduced by rain to 24 overs per side, were held by the tournament hosts to 159 for eight.Victory saw England, yet to win a major 50-over tournament, into the last four as one of two qualifiers out of Group A after their build-up for this match was overshadowed by ball-tampering allegations made against them by former captain Bob Willis. If Sri Lanka beat champions Australia in Mondays final Group A fixture at The Oval they will also feature in a last four that already includes Group B winners India and runners-up South Africa.New Zealand could yet reach the semi-finals themselves if Australia win but fail to do so by a large enough margin to better the Black Caps net run-rate.James Anderson, who finished with three wickets for 32 runs in five overs, reduced New Zealand to 14 for two by dismissing openers Luke Ronchi and Martin Guptill in the same over.Medium-pacer Ravi Bopara, in overcast conditions assisting seamers, took two for 26 in five overs.England captain Alastair Cook, the man-of-the-match, was dropped three times by Nathan McCullum on his way to top-scoring with 64 in a total of 169 all out.Off-spinner Nathan McCullum finally clung on to a return offering from his own bowling to dismiss left-handed opener Cook. This victory also meant England won their decider with New Zealand after they triumphed 2-1 in a one-day series in New Zealand earlier this year before the Black Caps turned the table by the same margin in a series in England in the run-up to the Champions Trophy..Kane Williamson kept New Zealand hopes alive with a 48-ball fifty completed when he struck Anderson for his seventh four before lofting Tim Bresnan for six.Suddenly, New Zealand needed 36 to win off 18 balls with five wickets left. But Williamson then holed out off Stuart Broad for 67, although the paceman had a worrying few moments before a review for a tight no-ball call went in his favour. And 135 for six became 140 for seven when Corey Anderson, making his one-day international debut, was caught by Anderson off Bresnan. That left New Zealand 140 for seven and needing 30 to win off 10 balls.Anderson wrapped up victory by having Nathan McCullum caught behind off the final delivery of the match. After New Zealand won the toss, Ian Bell was out when Brendon McCullum held a superb catch at short extra-cover off Mitchell McClenaghan. And 16 for one became 25 for two when Jonathan Trott, chipped Mills straight to Nathan McCullum, Brendons older brother, at mid-wicket.Trotts exit gave Mills his 25th Champions Trophy wicket, surpassing the competition record of retired Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.James Franklin almost struck first ball when Cook pulled him to mid-wicket only for Nathan McCullum to drop the chance.Left-hander Cook drove Franklin for six and flicked him over his shoulder for a four. But Franklin almost had him again only for Nathan McCullum to drop a juggled chance at mid-wicket.Nathan McCullum then put down a relatively easy catch when, at backward point, he dropped Cooks cut off Williamson.

Greek athletics chief flays closure of ERT

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek athletics chief Kostas Panagopoulos believes the governments closure of public broadcaster ERT is a disaster for the sport.ERT was Greek athletics main outlet for broadcasting and with its current status in limbo following the governments decision to close the organisation due to austerity measures, Panagopoulos fears for the future exposure of the sport in the birthplace of the Olympics. The public broadcasting service has always stood by the athletics federation consistently over the years, it is our window to the greater public. Its closure is a huge blow and concern for society, and is a disaster for amateur sports, Panagopoulos told radio station SportFM on Sunday.Greek athletics, already struggling to compete with more popular sports such as football and basketball, has been hit hard during countrys financial crisis, facing constant budget cuts.

Kuwait court dissolves parliament

Posted:

KUWAIT CITY (AP) - Kuwaits constitutional court forced new parliamentary elections Sunday, dissolving the current chamber on the basis of flaws in the election law, the state news agency reported. The decision may set the stage for a new wave of political showdowns in the Gulf nation. The ruling follows objections to the voting law in Decembers election, which was boycotted by opposition groups and others who claimed the new rules favored Kuwaits ruling family and were imposed without public debate. The official Kuwait News Agency said the courts decision invalidates the 50-member chamber. Other local media said the decision was over technicalities in the rules, and the court upheld controversial regulations that brought a one-person, one-vote system in place of the former rules that allowed voters to cast ballots for multiple candidates. The government and other backers of the new system claim that multiple votes opened the way for pressures on voters to favor for tribal or political blocs. Islamists groups and other opposition factions say the one-vote system is an attempt by Kuwaits leaders to weaken anti-government voices.Kuwait allows the most political openness among the Gulf Arab states and opposition groups have sharply stepped up pressures on the Western-backed ruling family in recent years. A statement by Kuwaits information minister, Sheik Salman Sabah Al-Sabah, said the state respects the rule of law on any verdict issued by the constitutional court.Kuwaits emir is expected to set a new election day, possibly within three months. Kuwaits political battles have spilled over into crackdowns on social media. Jail sentences have been imposed on dozens of activists and political figures, including former parliament members, for posts deemed insulting to the countrys ruler.
