Protesters swarm Istanbul square after clashes Posted: ISTANBUL (AP) - In a scene reminiscent of the Arab Spring, thousands of people on Saturday flooded Istanbul's main square after a crackdown on an anti-government protest turned city streets into a battlefield clouded by tear gas.Though he offered some concessions to demonstrators, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan remained largely defiant in the face of the biggest popular challenge to his power in a decade in office, insisting the protests are undemocratic and illegitimate.Public anger has flared among urban and secular Turks after police violently broke up an anti-development sit-in in the square, with protests spreading to other cities as demonstrators denounced what they see as Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian style. As the furious protests entered its second day, police fired tear gas and turned on water cannons at angry demonstrators, some of whom threw rocks and bottles on their march toward the city's landmark Taksim Square. In an area normally abuzz with tourists, stores were shuttered and protesters fled into luxury hotels for shelter.Turkish authorities later removed barricades and allowed thousands of demonstrators into the square in an effort to calm tension. Sounding defiant even as he pulled back police, Erdogan promised to stick to the government's redevelopment plans which protesters fear will remove one of the few green spaces in the sprawling city.He called the protesters a minority that was trying to forcefully impose demands and challenged the opposition that he could easily summon a million people for a government rally.I am not claiming that a government that has received the majority of the votes has limitless powers ... and can do whatever it wants, Erdogan said in a televised speech. Just as the majority cannot impose its will on the minority, the minority cannot impose its will on the majority.Under Erdogan's leadership, Turkey has boosted economic growth and raised its international profile, taking a central role in post-Arab Spring politics in the region. Though widely supported by rural and conservative religious Muslims, he remains a divisive figure in mainly secular circles and is criticized for his often abrasive style.Hundreds of people were injured in the protests, including four people who permanently lost their eyesight after being hit by gas canister or plastic bullets, Huseyin Demirdizen of Turkey's Doctors' Association told The Associated Press. He said at least two people injured in the protests are in life-threatening condition.
Report: Afghan Taliban delegation visits Iran Posted: TEHRAN (AP) - A semi-official Iranian news agency says Tehran has hosted a delegation of the Afghan Taliban, the radical Sunni group that has long been a sworn enemy of Iran's ruling Shiite clerics. The Fars agency reported on Saturday that the Taliban held talks with Iranian intelligence officials.Fars says the visitors came from the Taliban's political office in Qatar. The group recently opened a mission in the Gulf Arab country to provide a venue where Afghan President Hamid Karzai's emissaries could hold talks with the Taliban to try to find a peaceful end to the 12-year war in Afghanistan.Fars gave no other details. Other media didn't report on the unprecedented visit. The visit signals Iran could be seeking the role of a regional mediator between the Taliban and Karzai's government.
Suspected US drones kill 7 Qaeda men in Yemen Posted: SANAA (AP) - A Yemeni military official says suspected U.S. drone strikes have killed seven suspected Al Qaeda militants in the group's southern stronghold of Abyan. The official said two drones struck two cars on Saturday carrying the suspected militants, wounding two people as well. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, did not identify the victims. Also on Saturday, two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed Colonel Yahya al-Umaysi, the commander of an air base in Sayoun city in Hadramawt province.A security official said al-Umaysi was shot by one of the gunmen while leaving his car near a government office complex. The attacker, using a gun fitted with a silencer, fled. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to brief the media.
Thousands of anti-austerity protesters march in Frankfurt Posted: FRANKFURT (AFP) - Police fired tear gas at thousands of protesters who rallied in central Frankfurt on Saturday to voice growing European discontent against tough austerity measures that have been applied across the continent over the debt crisis. No injuries were reported but the march towards the European Central Bank (ECB) was halted several several times because of the tear gas.The demonstration in Germany, coinciding with the ECB's 15th anniversary, was matched later Saturday by similar rallies in both recession-hit Spain and Portugal.Police estimated that 7,000 people took part in the protest. Organisers had targeted a turnout of 20,000 but were unable to estimate the actual numbers. We would clearly like to say that the policies of the European Central Bank and the troika ... are not the solution, said Roland Suss, a spokesman for the Blockupy movement that organised the demonstration. The troika of international lenders -- the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank -- have imposed strict conditions on countries such as Greece and Portugal in exchange for bailout funds.Protesters say the belt-tightening measures applied by many governments to try to meet the conditions unfairly penalise the poor as some governments have been forced to slash jobs and raise taxes.Sixty-two-year-old Marica Frangakis from Greece said: I'm from the baby boom generation, and we have had a relatively good life. But now we have to fight for our survival. In Greece, people are desperate after the five-year crisis, she said, adding that it's good to see that people (in Germany) also feel concerned about the crisis. In Lisbon, thousands of demonstrators rallied in front of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) office, shouting Troika out and Government resign.Thousands in Madrid also turned up to protest against the troika.
Djokovic advances to 4th round at French Open Posted: PARIS (AP) - Novak Djokovic received a visit from a trainer late in his third-round match Saturday at the French Open, then completed a victory over No. 26-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.Walking to his changeover chair at 4-3 in the last set, Djokovic stretched his right arm several times and then was treated by the trainer, who applied ointment and massaged the Serb's upper arm.Djokovic then won the final two games to close out the victory against a player who beat him in the Madrid final last month.A six-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic earned his 500th tour victory. The French Open is the only major tournament he has yet to win, and he's trying to become the eighth man to complete a career Grand Slam.

Athletics: Bekele wins 10,000 at Prefontaine Classic Posted: EUGENE (AFP) - World record long-distance runner Kenenisa Bekele led an Ethiopian sweep in the 10,000 metres of the 2013 Prefontaine Classic, edging out Imane Merga on Friday at Hayward Field stadium.Bekele finished in 27 minutes, 12.08 seconds to beat out Merga (27:12.37) and Abera Kuma who finished third in a personal best 27:13.10.It is very important. I am happy I win again here, Bekele said. I am injury free now.Bekele said he had hoped to run under 27 minutes, but the field wasn't strong enough on this day.We decided to run under 27 but we didn't. From beginning, the pace was slow, and nobody pushed after that. It is very tough; I am only one person, said Bekele who ran the fastest time of the year in the event. We sprinted with 200 metres left. It is an OK time.Bekele's younger brother, Tariku, was scheduled to run in the 10,000 but ended up pulling out. Tariku held off his older sibling for bronze in the London Summer Olympics. This is not the Olympics or World Championships, just trials, Bekele said. He don't have to run. We have many races. He can join us in other races, the world championship or other strong races.Four of the top five finishers were from Ethiopia. Kenya's Bitan Karoki placed fourth (27:13.12) while Birhan Tesfaye (27:14.34) rounded out the top five. The Prefontaine Classic is the fourth of 14 stops in the IAAF's elite Diamond League series. The field also includes training partner Galen Rupp, from the US, and London bronze medallist Thomas Longosiwa, from Kenya.

Woods has highest 9-hole score of career Posted: DUBLIN (AP) - Tiger Woods posted his highest nine-hole score as a professional when he shot an 8-over 44 on the back nine during the third round of the Memorial Tournament on Saturday.Woods walked past reporters after his round and declined interview requests. He spoke later to a U.S. PGA Tour official. The conditions were tough and when I missed it cost me, he said after completing a 7-over 79 that had him plummeting down the scoreboard at Muirfield Village, where he has won a record five times. I caught the wrong gusts at the wrong time, made a couple of bad swings and all in all it just went the wrong way.His previous worst nine-hole score was a 43 on three occasions, most recently at Quail Hollow in 2010.He wasn't alone. Playing partner Zach Johnson shot an 81.It was hard, said Johnson, who declined to discuss Woods or his play. It was very hard today. There was a lot of wind. The third member of the group, Jim Furyk, shot a 69 that was among the best scores of the day on a course that is difficult even when conditions are calm and quiet.Asked if it was stunning when a player as good as Woods shoots such a high score, Furyk said, Yeah, it is. He didn't hit that many bad golf shots but he got away with none of them, if that makes sense.Woods had earlier rounds of 71 and 74 and stands at 8-over 224 and near the bottom in the 73-player field. The 79 was his highest score by three shots at the Memorial, where he won from 1999-2001, 2009 and 2012.The 79 was his worst round since shooting a 79 in the second round at Quail Hollow in 2010 and matches the second-worst score he's had as a pro. His only worst 18-hole score is a third-round 81 at the 2002 British Open at Muirfield.Things started getting away from him on his third hole, the signature 12th. His iron shot into the par-3 cleared a large lake but left him with a bad stance in the front bunker. He had to hit to the left side of the green away from the pin just to get out of the sand. From there he three-putted for a double bogey. At the 15th, for the second day in a row Woods hit into the fairway but then nailed his second shot into the deep rough on a slope left of the green. He hit sideways to avoid a tree but came up short of the green, then chopped out of the thick stuff with the ball running downhill through the green into the first cut. Again he followed with a three-putt for a double-bogey.We didn't hit that many bad shots starting out the day and the next thing you know we were quite a few over par, Woods said. It was a rough day. It was tough out there from beginning to end. After failing to get up and down from just off the green to the left of the 17th hole, everything unraveled at the difficult par-4 18th. Woods' drive was down the middle of the fairway, but his second shot was well short and rolled back to a collection area in front. He spun a sand wedge shot that landed short of the pin and then spun back, rolling toward him and ending up even farther away from the pin than he was after the previous shot.He finally chipped to 5 feet above the hole on the steeply-slanted green, then rolled his next putt down the hill and 7 feet past and missed the comebacker to settle for the triple-bogey.The third shot was pretty incredible, to hit it that short and have it spin that much, Furyk said. I was up on the green, I watched it go up, spin it was spinning like a top and then came back. It had a lot of juice on it.
For 90th birthday, pilot plans 90 border crossings Posted: GRAND ISLAND (AP) - Loved ones of John Lawton will gaze heavenward on his 90th birthday Monday.Again and again and again.Otherwise, they might miss his Cessna 172 as he attempts to make 90 flying passages across the U.S.-Canadian border.Somehow, I got a wild idea that I needed to do something different for my birthday, said Lawton, who has been a pilot for 56 years. From the Ohio airport he bought following a career at the former Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo, Lawton set his sights on a watery stretch of the northern border in the Niagara River, north of Buffalo. The spot gives him a good view of the border, he said. It's also near where Lawton had what he calls the closest call of his flying career, a disorienting, dark and snowy flight home from a December 1956 business meeting in Syracuse. It ended with an unannounced landing at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which had been closed amid an 11-inch snowfall.Lawton hopes for clear skies when he takes off from that same airport Monday and spends an estimated one to two hours at an altitude of around 3,500 feet, performing a series of tight, nearly aerobatic, figure-eight patterns in his four-seat airplane. He has asked his non-pilot daughter, Brenda, along for the ride. Lawton's son, a pilot, will stay on the ground so no one can question who was really at the controls.I've been working on it and am trying to perfect the flying technique to do it, Lawton said by phone from his Westfield Township, Ohio, home. He has made practice runs over a roadway to get a feel for the turns and timing. The Federal Aviation Administration's Buffalo approach control, which oversees the airspace at low altitudes, has signed off on the flight. Lawton also has gained support from fellow flier Claudia Childs. The former chief of detectives for the Buffalo Police Department opened Little Bird Airways after retiring, offering scenic flights over western New York.Lawton got in touch with Childs after reading in a Buffalo News profile that she wants to fly on her 90th birthday still 3 ½ decades away.I was a cop for 25 years. I'm thinking, 'Who am I talking to?' Childs recalled of the first phone call. She was convinced he was the real thing after learning of his credentials and plans, meticulously thought-out in his scientist's way.Childs has suggested Lawton break up the 90 passes over the border with a couple of spectacularly scenic circuits around Niagara Falls, which straddles the United States and Canada just north of where Lawton will be. She thinks Lawton may have a shot at a record for being the oldest pilot to circle the Falls. As far as the rest of Lawton's plans, Childs would take a more relaxed approached, she said.I would be doing more gentle turns, she said. But John has more flying experience. He's talking about doing a little more precise maneuver.Instead of doing nice comfortable figure eights, she said, he's going to be doing more extreme figure eights to get the turns sharper. If all goes as planned, Lawton will add to a long list of flying highlights accumulated over more than 6,000 hours of flying in more than 40 models of aircraft. He was involved in developing Lacrosse guided missile systems, collecting snowflakes in flight during lake-effect snowstorms in Buffalo and initiating avalanches by dropping explosives in the Italian Alps. He led a 1968 research team that created the Skadi, an electronic rescue beacon to locate avalanche victims, and has lent his skills to Angel Flight, the Civil Air Patrol and the Experimental Aircraft Association. In 2007, he received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, given for 50 years of safe flights.
| Pressure mounts on BCCI boss in betting row Posted: NEW DELHI (AFP) - Another top Indian cricket official quit on Saturday, piling more pressure on the beleaguered president of the world's richest cricketing body to resign over an escalating betting scandal.Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajeev Shukla told the Press Trust of India he was resigning from the post in the best interest of Indian cricket in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal that has ensnared the glitzy league.I have decided to quit as IPL chairman. It is a decision which I was pondering over for some time. I think it is time to step down, Shukla was quoted as saying by the news agency.Shukla's announcement came on the eve of a crucial meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the southern city of Chennai that is expected to decide the fate of the cricket body's president N. Srinivasan.Srinivasan has been pressed to quit after his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested last week for allegedly taking part in the illegal betting row embroiling the IPL that has dismayed fans in the cricket-mad subcontinent.Shukla's resignation from the powerful IPL post followed the resignations of BCCI joint secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke on Friday over the spot-fixing row.Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke resigned in the best interest of Indian cricket. | Australia beat Windies by 4 wickets in warmup Posted: CARDIFF (AP) - Shane Watson slammed 135 to lead Australia past West Indies by four wickets with 11.1 overs to spare in a warmup one-dayer for the Champions Trophy at Sophia Gardens on Saturday. In reply to West Indies' 256-9, Australia raced to 259-6 in 38.5 overs.Watson, with George Bailey then Adam Voges, revived Australia from 2-4 after Kemar Roach dismissed David Warner and Phillip Hughes for ducks in the second over.Watson made 135 off 98 balls, including 15 boundaries and four sixes. He and Bailey, with 21, combined for 68, then he and Voges, 43, shared 125 for the fourth. Mitchell Marsh, with 39 off 19, finished off West Indies.Earlier, Darren Bravo's 86 and Johnson Charles' 55 gave West Indies a great start at 195-3, but they were slowed by Mitchell Starc, 4-29, and Clint McKay, 3-45. |
Kohli, Karthik tons help India beat Sri Lanka Posted: BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik both hit centuries as India warmed up the forthcoming Champions Trophy with an impressive five-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on Saturday.Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team looked up against it when Sri Lanka posted an imposing total of 333-5 after being put into bat.But Kohli smashed 144 from 120 balls and Karthik blasted 106 not out from only 81 balls to lead India to victory with one over to spare.India were struggling at 62-3 in the 13th over and then 110-4 in the 21st over before Kohli and Karthik came to the rescue.Kohli hit 11 fours and three sixes, while Karthik notched up 12 fours and two sixes as he and Dhoni, who scored 18 not out, helped India finish on 337-5.India play their second warm-up game against Australia on June 4 in Cardiff before opening their Champions Trophy campaign against South Africa at the same venue two days later.Kusal Perera and Tillekaratne Dilshan had caused plenty of problems for the Indian bowling attack in a blistering start for the Sri Lanka openers.Dilshan hit nine fours and one six in his 84, while Perera scored 82 off 94 balls, including three sixes. That pair added 160 runs in 26 overs before both retired in order to allow other batsmen get some match practice. However, even Sri Lanka's daunting total wasn't enough to keep India at bay.India opener Shikhar Dhawan was run out in the second over as he failed to beat Lahiru Thirimanne's direct hit.Murali Vijay was dismissed for 18, caught by Thirimanne off Shaminda Eranga and Rohit Sharma fell for just five in the 13th over. But Suresh Raina started the recovery with a quickfire 34.When he departed India needed 223 runs for a win at an asking rate approaching eight an over but Kohli and Karthik kept their cool.Kohli, in particular, stamped his class with some beautiful shots all over the park. When he was out in the 44th over, India needed 38 runs from 37 balls for a win with five wickets in hand and Karthik and Dhoni finished the job.
Ponting hits century on Surrey debut Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting marked his first-class Surrey debut with a century against Derbyshire in the County Championship on Saturday.Ponting has retired from international cricket and has joined Surrey for a brief spell while captain Graeme Smith is away on international duty. The 38-year-old batsman showed there is still life in the old dog as he cruised to his 81st hundred and shared a third-wicket stand of 180 in 49 overs on the third day of a four-day match at Derby.Arun Harinath made a career-best 154, while Ponting was unbeaten on 120 from 182 balls out of 362 for four at the close. However, with Surrey still trailing by 90 runs it is hard to see either side forcing a victory on the final day.Vikram Solanki and Harinath put on 133 for the second wicket to set the stage for Ponting.Derbyshire knew they had to get Ponting early to put the visitors under pressure, but several of their bowlers complained of light-headedness along with umpire Nigel Cowley, who left the field for 20 minutes and was replaced by Surrey first team coach Ian Salisbury. The sight of Ponting stroking the ball around was enough to make their heads spin but Harinath was far from overshadowed and celebrated his third first-class century in style by lofting Durston for a straight six that was well caught by a spectator.Ponting's first 50 for Surrey arrived from 85 balls when he pulled David Wainwright for his sixth four, although he was lucky when he mistimed a pull at Footitt which lobbed over the wicketkeeper's head for two.Ponting was soon raising his bat in recognition to the applause for his hundred, which came when he swept Durston for his 13th four.
Egypt blasts US warning over incidents at pyramids Posted: CAIRO (AP) - Egypts Antiquities Ministry has criticized a U.S. Embassy message to American citizens in the country, urging them to be extra cautious because of recent incidents near the pyramids in Giza.An embassy message earlier this week urged Americans to elevate their situational awareness when visiting the pyramids because of a lack of visible security or police presence there. It noted incidents of angry groups of individuals surrounding and pounding on cars with visitors, sometimes trying to open car doors. The ministry insists the pyramids area in Giza, Cairos twin city, is totally secure and that the overall situation for tourists has improved.Security deteriorated following the 2011 uprising that ousted longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak and tourism took a sharp hit.
