Erdogan calls for end to Turkey protest

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Turkey's prime minister took a combative stance on his closely watched return to the country early Friday, telling supporters who thronged to greet him that the protests that have swept the country must come to an end.In the first extensive public show of support since anti-government protests erupted last week, more than 10,000 supporters cheered Recep Tayyip Erdogan with rapturous applause outside Istanbul's international airport.Despite earlier comments that suggested he could be softening his stand, Erdogan delivered a fiery speech on his return from a four-day trip to North Africa. These protests that are bordering on illegality must come to an end as of now, he said.Tens of thousands of protesters have held demonstrations that have spread to dozens of cities across Turkey, sparked by the violent police reaction last Friday to what started out as a small protest against a plan to develop Istanbul's central Taksim Square.Since then, three people have died two protesters and a policeman and thousands have been wounded. One protester is on life support in a hospital in Ankara.Protesters from all walks of life have occupied Taksim Square and its park, objecting to what they say is Erdogan's increasingly autocratic and arrogant manner of governing charges he vehemently denies.Erdogan's words were at times almost drowned out by his supporters. God is Great, they chanted, and soon moved on to slogans referring specifically to the protesters in Taksim Square.Let us go, let us smash them, they shouted. Istanbul is here, where are the looters?Erdogan had initially referred to the protesters as looters and troublemakers, while also acknowledging that excessive police force might have been used, and promising it would be investigated. On his return to Istanbul, Erdogan's speech, delivered from atop an open-air bus outside the airport terminal, appeared at first to be an attempt to strike a unifying note. They say I am the prime minister of only 50 percent. It's not true. We have served the whole of the 76 million from the east to the west, he said at the airport, referring to his election win in 2011, when he took 50 percent of the vote.Together we are Turkey. Together we are brothers, he said, adding We have never endeavored to break hearts. We are in favor of mending hearts. But he soon became more combative. We have never been for building tension and polarization. But we cannot applaud brutality, he said.In his last speech in Tunisia before flying to Istanbul, Erdogan had said that terrorist groups were involved in the protests, saying they had been identified. In a twist, Erdogan implied that bankers were also part of a conspiracy that was fuelling the protests. He added that the fans of dissent had been fanned by other groups too. Those who call themselves journalists, artists, politicians, have, in a very irresponsible way, opened the way for hatred, discrimination and provocation, he said.

Georgia says 6 soldiers killed in Afghanistan

TBILISI (AP) - Georgia's Defense Ministry says at least six Georgian soldiers have been killed in an attack by insurgents in Afghanistan.Ministry spokesman Irakli Dzneladze says nine other soldiers were wounded in Thursday's attack. The attack comes as international troops stationed in the country are transferring responsibility for security to Afghan forces in preparation for a withdrawal of combat forces by the end of 2014.Last month, three Georgian soldiers were killed and several others wounded in a suicide attack involving a vehicle packed with explosives at their base in Helmand Province.Georgia, a former Soviet republic with aspirations of joining NATO, has 1,545 troops currently serving in Afghanistan.

Russian president Putin, wife divorce

Posted:

MOSCOW (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila said Thursday they are divorcing after nearly 30 years of marriage, making the announcement on state television after attending a ballet performance at the Kremlin. It was our joint decision, Putin said.Lyudmila Putin, a former Aeroflot flight attendant, was rarely seen in public during her husband's long tenure at the top of Russian politics and implied that she didn't like to travel with him on his frequent trips.I don't like publicity and flying is difficult for me, she said. The Putins married on July 28, 1983, and have two daughters, Maria and Yekaterina. In the televised announcement, Putin appeared reserved and Lyudmila smiled tentatively. We practically never saw each other. To each his own life, Putin said.Lyudmila Putin said, We will eternally be very close people. I'm thankful ... that he supports me.Rumors have followed the pair for years. In 2008, Putin dismissed a tabloid claim that he intended to marry a former Olympic gymnast less than half his age, saying I like all Russian women. There were no immediate indications of how the move would be perceived by the public. Divorce is common in Russia, and nearly 700,000 pairs dissolved their marriages in 2009, according to UNICEF.Russian leaders, unlike their counterparts in the West, generally keep their personal lives well out of public view. Mikhail Gorbachev's wife Raisa raised many Russians' hackles by her visibility, flair for fashionable dress and forthright comments. But Putin also has made a point of supporting traditional social values and appearing at holiday masses of the Orthodox Church. The church permits divorce under some circumstances; it is not clear if the Putins sought pastoral advice or permission before the split. There have been hints that Lyudmila Putin was unhappy. In a 2005 interview with three Russian newspapers, she complained that her husband worked long hours, forgetting that one needs not only to work, but also to live. She said she raised the couple's two daughters with a mixture of devotion and distance. While her daughters sometimes shared secrets with her, she said she didn't hold with the idea that parents and children should be friends.

White House: US phone records a 'critical tool'

Posted:

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) - The White House says a court order allowing the government to secretly collect millions of U.S. citizens' telephone records is a critical tool to fight security threats.White House spokesman Josh Earnest says he can't discuss classified information. But he says the court order in question allows the intelligence community to know when terrorists or suspected terrorists are engaging in dangerous activities. He says that's particularly true for people located in the U.S.He says the order doesn't allow the government to listen in on calls, but only includes details like telephone numbers.Earnest says there's a robust legal regime overseeing the program and that Congress has been fully briefed.Disclosure of the phone records was first reported by The Guardian newspaper and confirmed by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

US phone surveillance of millions triggers outrage

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Civil liberty groups, privacy campaigners and some US lawmakers reacted with outrage Thursday to revelations that the US intelligence community is monitoring millions of Americans' telephone records. As Washington was jolted by overnight news that US carrier Verizon was under secret court order to provide sweeping amounts of phone data to intelligence agencies, senior US lawmakers insisted the program was legal and has been going on for years. But critics vented their anger at what appears to be a dramatically broad scope of surveillance. It's a program in which some untold number of innocent people have been put under the constant surveillance of government agents, said Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).It is beyond Orwellian, and it provides further evidence of the extent to which basic democratic rights are being surrendered in secret to the demands of unaccountable intelligence agencies.Former vice president Al Gore, on his Twitter feed, agreed: In (this) digital era, privacy must be a priority. Is it just me, or is secret blanket surveillance obscenely outrageous?London's The Guardian newspaper reported that Verizon, one of the major US telephone operators, is under a top-secret court order to give the National Security Agency details on all telephone calls, both domestic and international, made on its networks.Reproducing the order on its website, the Guardian said it shows for the first time that under President Barack Obama's administration, the phone records of millions of Americas are being indiscriminately collected by the NSA regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing. The White House did not explicitly confirm the report, but a senior official acknowledged that collecting phone records was a critical part of the ongoing US war on terror, as authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA.The top members of the Senate Intelligence Committee quickly defended the program, stressing that many lawmakers are well aware of the activity. This is nothing particularly new, this has been going on for seven years under the auspices of the FISA authority, said ranking Republican Saxby Chambliss.Democratic chair Dianne Feinstein agreed, saying intelligence agencies are only concerned with metadata that might shed light on terrorist activities, and further monitoring would not be possible without a FISA court order.Terrorists will come after us if they can, and the only thing that we have to deter this is good intelligence, to understand that a plot is being hatched and to get there before they get to us, she said. But several senators expressed worry at the breadth of the program.Obviously it's a matter of concern, senior Republican Senator John McCain told reporters.Tracking terror planning and activities is a necessary part of counterterrorism operations, he said. But if it was something where we just blanket started finding out who everybody called and under what circumstances, then I think it deserves congressional hearings.Democrat Dick Durbin insisted that the Obama administration was not expanding surveillance powers, merely continuing those that were started under the (George W.) Bush administration. But Senator Rand Paul, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, had a different take, branding the order to hand over millions of phone records an astounding assault on the Constitution.Senate Democrat Mark Udall, who wrote Attorney General Eric Holder last year expressing concern about US secret orders, joined several other senators in demanding to hear the White House's justification for such sweeping surveillance.

Tennis: It's Serena vs Sharapova in French Open final

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - The top two seeds -- Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova -- will contest Saturday's French Open final, but they took starkly contrasting routes to get there from Thursday's semi-finals.Top seed Williams bulldozed her way past an outclassed Sara Errani of Italy 6-0, 6-1 in just 46 minutes. Defending champion Sharapova survived a second-set slump and a glut of double faults to ease past Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.It will be the first time since 1995, when Steffi Graf defeated top seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, that the two top seeds have contested the women's final at Roland Garros. The two have met 15 times with Williams ahead 13-2 and Sharapova has not won since she defeated the American as a 17-year-old newcomer at the season-ending WTA Championship in 2004.The way Williams demolished the lightweight Errani, who gave Sharapova some problems in last year's final, will mean that she will start a strong favouriite to bag her 16th Grand Slam title.Williams, at 1.75m and 70kg, was just too powerful for Errani, whose slight stature of 1.64m and 60kg, was never going to intimidate the American. The 31-year-old American blasted 40 winners to Errani's two while the Italian won just five points on the American's serve. It will be Williams first French Open final since she won her only title in Paris in 2002, beating sister Venus in the final, and she will take a career-best 30-match winning streak with her.I told myself: 'Serena, just concentrate' and that's what I did, said Williams, who had been pushed to three sets and almost two hours by quarter-final opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova.Against Maria, I will have to prepare slightly differently. She's a great player. But it's magnificent to be back in the final after 11 years.Sharapova blew hot and cold against Azarenka who was bidding to become the first woman since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 to win the Australian and French Opens in the same year. The 26-year-old Russian dropped her serve in the opening game with the first two of what would turn out to be a messy 11 double faults, but then produced her best tennis of the tournament so far to run off six games in a row.Azarenka, playing in her first French Open semi-final at 23, steadied the ship at the start of the second set and then applied extra pressure on the Sharapova serve, reaping immediate dividends as the Russian lost her way.But just when the momentum had switched sides, a brief rain shower sent the players back to the locker room for a 35-minute delay. On the resumption, it was Sharapova who was back in command. She moved out into a 5-2 lead on the back of an array of big hits from the baseline, but then three more double faults and four missed match points had her wobbling again. Two games later though she held firm to end Azarenka's challenge and reach the eighth Grand Slam final of her career.I really had to play to the end today and I am extremely happy to be back in the final, said Sharapova.(The rain delay) gave me a little bit of time to think of what I did well in the first set and try to get that back again for the third.Azarenka agreed that the rain delay had not helped her cause.I think the break kind of changed the momentum, for sure, she said. When we got back out I kind of didn't start the same way I was playing in the second set. I was just trying to make things happen too quick and started missing the ball. You know, it was a little bit unfortunate and inconsistent in that particular moment.

Bryans reach doubles final at French Open

Posted:

PARIS (AP) - Top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States will bid for a record 14th major doubles title together after beating Alexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares of Brazil 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals of the French Open on Thursday. On Saturday, the American twins will face Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut of France, who defeated Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 7-6 (4), 6-2.We've never played a French team in the (French Open) final, Bob said. I'm sure it's going to be a very enthusiastic support for the French. Probably feel a little bit like a Davis Cup match. We've been in those situations before. We kind of strive in those types of atmospheres. The Bryan brothers broke for a 4-3 lead in the second set and clinched victory when Soares hit a service return wide. The Bryans won their only French Open title together in 2003. By clinching a 13th major title at the Australian Open this year, they broke a tie with Australian greats John Newcombe and Tony Roche. It is cool to look at it and have the record, and we do say: 'Just go out there on the court and play like we have nothing really to prove or play like we have nothing to lose' because we've done a lot in the sport, Bob said.

Athletics: Gatlin pips Bolt in Rome

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - American Justin Gatlin pipped six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt to victory in the men's 100 metres at the Rome Golden Gala, the fifth leg of the Diamond League, on Thursday.Gatlin came into the event buoyed by his victory in the opening leg in Doha and in Eugene last weekend, while Bolt was making his first appearance in Europe since his recent recovery from a hamstring injury. The American, an Olympic champion in 2004 who went on to serve a four-year doping ban, had a solid start and by 80 metres both he and Bolt were neck and neck as the pair pulled ahead of the field. As the finish approached Gatlin dipped his head over the line desperately, which was good enough to hand him the win in a time of 9.94sec, just outside his season's best of 9.91 set in Beijing last month.Jamaican Bolt, the world record holder in 9.58sec, was second in a season best of 9.95, with Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut claiming a surprise third place finish ahead of American Michael Rodgers in a personal best of 10.02.Bolt admitted that after weeks on the sidelines trying to recover, his technique was rusty.Five steps in I stumbled and I didn't feel my legs, I guess I need to do more strait work, he said. It's just (a question of) time this season, it's back to ground zero. I was all over the place and at the end it just wasn't me.

Golf: Lewis leads Lyoness Open

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - England's Tom Lewis hit a flawless opening round of 63 to take the lead of the Lyoness Open on Thursday.Lewis hit nine birdies and no bogeys on the par-72 course to lead by two shots from Dutchman Joost Luiten, with France's Alexander Levy and English trio Graeme Storm, Simon Dyson and Richard McEvoy a shot further back.Lewis won the Portugal Masters on only his third professional start in 2011, but has not had a top-10 finish in a strokeplay event since. It's a great start, said the former amateur star, who came into the event on the back of six consecutive missed cuts.I had some good fortune around the 17th and 18th, which was my front nine, and that made the back nine more relaxed. I holed a lot of putts, which was really the only difference between today and the rest of the year. This year's been tough but I've been very close and shown a lot of good stuff. Today it all came together and if I can have three more rounds like that I'll be alright.Already the oldest winner in European Tour history, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez set about breaking his own record with a five-under-par 67, while defending champion Bernd Wiesberger had consecutive birdies at the sixth and seventh as he opened with a four-under 68.

Oil rises on positive reading on US job market

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - Oil rose to a high for the week Thursday after a positive reading on the U.S. job market, as natural gas plunged on a surprisingly large increase in the nation's supplies.U.S. benchmark oil for July delivery gained $1.02 to finish at $94.76 a barrel in New York, the highest close since May 28. Earlier in the session, crude hit $95.32 a barrel.Natural gas dropped 17 cents, or 4.1 percent, to end at $3.83 per 1,000 cubic feet.Oil prices received support from the latest government unemployment update. The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 11,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 346,000, a level consistent with steady job growth. The claims figures come a day ahead of the monthly payrolls report, which often sets the tone across financial markets for a week or two after its release.Natural gas sank after the government released weekly supply numbers. Natural gas supplies tend to rise at this time of year, between the heating and air conditioning seasons. The report showed supplies rose by 111 billion cubic feet to 2.252 trillion cubic feet for the week ended May 31. That was well above the average increase for the last week of May of 82 billion cubic feet to 98 billion, according to the daily newsletter The Schork Report.Natural gas futures have dropped 43 cents, or 10 percent in the last two weeks.Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 57 cents to finish at $103.61 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Dollar sinks as ECB keeps rate on hold

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US dollar fell sharply against the euro and yen Thursday as sentiment abandoned the greenback after the European Central Bank and the Bank of England both kept monetary policy unchanged. The dollar lost 1.2 percent on the euro, and lost more than three percent on the yen during the day before climbing back a little. At 2100 GMT, the euro was trading at $1.3243, compared to $1.3089 late Wednesday, after having topped $1.33, its highest level in three months, during the day.The dollar bought 97.07 yen, down from 99.16, after having traded as low as 95.88 yen during the day.The British pound also did well, rising 1.3 percent to $1.5599 from $1.5394.The shift away from the dollar came as confidence in US growth ebbed a little after some slightly weaker data, with expectations down for Friday's Labor Department numbers on US job creation and unemployment in May.Meanwhile, the two European central banks suggested slightly more optimism as they held back from adding to stimulus. While the ECB left interest rates unchanged at 0.50 percent, slightly more optimism from Mario Draghi was enough to send the currency to a three-week, almost four-week high, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. While the ECB is keeping monetary policy easy and all of their options open, their brighter outlook means they aren't poised to pull the trigger on additional stimulus anytime soon, which was enough for forex traders to buy euros. The yen's move was its largest in one day since the Fukushima earthquake in March 2010, said Christopher Vecchio of Daily FX.Given the size of the swing, he said, We would not rule out a major reversal, extending through 98.60 to 100.00, should tomorrow's (US jobs) report post a sizeable surprise. The US dollar also fell on the Swiss franc, to 0.9296 francs from 0.9422.

Champions Trophy: Pakistan to face Windies today

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) – Pakistan will open their Champions Trophy campaign at The Oval against West Indies today (Friday). The match will start at 2:30pm (PST).Pakistan are missing players who've been key members of their side in the past but have a strong bowling attack to defend competitive scores. In batting Mohammad Hafeez has been solid at the top of the order and there's the experience of Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq in the middle, and Wahab Riaz and Junaid Khan have been impressive as seamers. For West Indies, Sunil Narine will look to justify his status as the world's top-ranked one-day international bowler when the West Indies face Pakistan in their Champions Trophy opener. The off-spinner failed to make much impression in the West Indies' first warm-up match, against Australia, but took two for 26 in 10 overs against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on Tuesday.Narine hopes to make a big impact on this year's ICC Champions Trophy, having been encouraged by conditions in England. He may not have made much of an impression during the West Indies' 2012 early season tour of England but hopes that pitches will be more receptive to spin at this time of year.It feels much better for me this year than when I was here last year, he told windiescricket.com.I am getting some purchase off the wicket and I'm hoping to help the West Indies to some more victories in this tournament. The wickets last year didn't offer much turn but this year I am getting a bit more turn, they suit me a bit more and I'm trying to make the most of it.Friday's match is set to see the world's two leading one-day bowlers in action with Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal, also an off-spinner, ranked just below Narine in the International Cricket Council (ICC) standings. While Ajmal is an established international, Pakistan's decision to drop Shahid Afridi and Younus Khan, allied to seamer Umar Gul's injury, has left them with some unfamiliar names in their side.Gul's absence has created space for seamer Asad Ali, who took three for 30 in Monday's warm-up match against South Africa following his debut in a two-wicket win over Ireland in Dublin.

Australia ponder Clarke's fitness for England opener

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia could decide as soon as later Thursday whether captain Michael Clarke is fit to face England in their Champions Trophy opener at Edgbaston on Saturday. The 32-year-old batsman is doubtful for the match, the first Anglo-Australian clash of an Ashes season, after aggravating a longstanding back problem upon arriving in the United Kingdom.Clarke left Australia's training camp for specialist treatment in London on Wednesday and Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Clarke was in a race against time to be fit for Saturday. And if he doesn't play this weekend defending champions Australia, bidding for a third straight Champions Trophy crown, may decide it is not worth risking Clarke in the one-day tournament ahead of next month's first Test against England in Nottingham. We're hoping to make a decision on him reasonably quickly, Kountoris told Cricket Australia's website on Thursday. He's been in London since yesterday to do the treatment that he usually gets.We are trying to maximise the time he has got over there so sometime tonight or tomorrow we'll make that decision (whether he plays against England).Without Clarke, Australia collapsed to 65 all out in a warm-up match against India this week and Kountouris added: We are just trying to get him right. He has had this before so we know how it plays out and we know the treatment that he needs to get him right. But being such a short tournament we're racing against time to get him fit.We certainly won't be taking any risks. It is a really important time of the year for us, that goes without saying. This is an important tournament too so we'll get him up for whatever games we can and won't take any stupid risks.Firstly he needs to be pain free, which he's not at the moment. The we need to put him through a series of tests, get him running and batting and get him doing things he'd normally do.We need him training at full intensity before we get him on the park.Earlier this year the problem, which he has had since he was a teenager, forced New South Wales' Clarke to return home early from Australia's 4-0 Test series drubbing in India. He gets little tiny setbacks and we manage them and they get better in a day or two days, Kountouris said. We're just hoping this is no different in this case.He was disappointed when it first happened but he's a pretty resilient guy and he is just focused on what he has to do.He's really motivated and professional about how he goes about about he's rehab.Kountouris denied the latest flare-up had been caused by the lengthy flight from Australia, saying: It's just one of those things; hard to know what the cause of it is. He was just batting in the nets and just felt it.
