Former drone operator says he suffers from PTSD

Posted:

NEW YORK (Agencies) - A former Air Force drone operator spoke to NBC News about how he is haunted by the more than 1,600 deaths he contributed to.In the interview, Brandon Bryant, 27, spoke about the deaths he witnessed from afar in vivid detail. In one instance, he recalled operating the camera on a drone over Afghanistan while sitting at an Air Force base in Nevada. The missiles hit the three targeted men. Bryant says the men may have been carrying rifles but he isn't convinced they were necessarily bad guys. The guy that was running forward, he’s missing his right leg,” he recalled. “And I watch this guy bleed out and, I mean, the blood is hot.” As the man died his body grew cold, said Bryant, and his thermal image changed until he became the same color as the ground.Bryant told NBC News that he served as a drone sensor operator for five years. His work entailed guiding drones over Iraq and Afghanistan. His duties did not include the firing of missiles, but the missions he took part in caused more than 1,600 deaths.Bryant explained to NBC News that he now suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He said he lost respect for life and started to feel like a sociopath. Those feelings were compounded near the end of his time in the Air Force. In an interview with NBC News, he provided a rare first-person glimpse into what it’s like to control the controversial machines that have become central to the U.S. effort to kill terrorists. He says that as an operator he was troubled by the physical disconnect between his daily routine and the violence and power of the faraway drones. “You don't feel the aircraft turn,” he said. “You don't feel the hum of the engine. You hear the hum of the computers, but that's definitely not the same thing.”At the same time, the images coming back from the drones were very real and very graphic.“People say that drone strikes are like mortar attacks,” Bryant said. “Well, artillery doesn't see this. Artillery doesn't see the results of their actions. It's really more intimate for us, because we see everything.”A self-described “naïve” kid from a small Montana town, Bryant joined the Air Force in 2005 at age 19. After he scored well on tests, he said a recruiter told him that as a drone operator he would be like the smart guys in the control room in a James Bond movie, the ones who feed the agent the information he needs to complete his mission. He trained for three and a half months before participating in his first drone mission. Bryant operated the drone’s cameras from his perch at Nellis Air Force base in Nevada as the drone rose into the air just north of Baghdad.Bryant and the rest of his team were supposed to use their drone to provide support and protection to patrolling U.S. troops. But he recalls watching helplessly as insurgents buried an IED in a road and a U.S. Humvee drove over it.“We had no way to warn the troops,” he said. He later learned that three soldiers died. And once he had taken part in a kill, any remaining illusions about James Bond disappeared. “Like, this isn’t a videogame,” he said. “This isn’t some sort of fantasy. This is war. People die.”Bryant said that most of the time he was an operator, he and his team and his commanding officers made a concerted effort to avoid civilian casualties. But he began to wonder who the enemy targets on the ground were, and whether they really posed a threat. He’s still not certain whether the three men in Afghanistan were really Taliban insurgents or just men with guns in a country where many people carry guns. The men were five miles from American forces arguing with each other when the first missile hit them.“They (didn’t) seem to be in a hurry,” he recalled. “They (were) just doing their thing. ... They were probably carrying rifles, but I wasn't convinced that they were bad guys.“ But as a 21-year-old airman, said Bryant, he didn’t think he had the standing to ask questions. He also remembers being convinced that he had seen a child scurry onto his screen during one mission just before a missile struck, despite assurances from others that the figure he’d seen was really a dog.

Suicide blasts kill 16 in Iraq, including Iranians

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - Suicide attackers rammed car bombs on Friday into a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims and a police checkpoint west of Baghdad, killing 16 people in all, in the latest bout of violence to rattle Iraq. The attacks follow the deadliest two months in Iraq in half a decade, raising fears the country is descending into a renewed wave of widespread killing like the one that drove the nation to the brink of civil war following the U.S.-led invasion.Friday's first attack struck in the morning, when a suicide bomber drove his explosives-laden car into a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims who were on their way to visit shrines in the holy city of Najaf. The attack took place near the town of Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad. Police said eight people were killed and 25 were wounded in the blast.Since the 2003 invasion, foreign pilgrims from Iran and other countries have poured into Najaf, whose Imam Ali shrine is one of the holiest sites for Shiite Muslims. In the evening, attackers drove two more car bombs into a major highway checkpoint between the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in the Sunni-dominated Anbar province west of Baghdad, detonating them nearly simultaneously.Four police officers and four civilians died in that attack, according to police.Medical officials confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.Iraq has been ravaged by a spike in violence in recent weeks, with recent monthly death tolls rising to levels not seen since 2008. According to the United Nations, at least 1,045 Iraqi civilians and security personnel were killed in May. The tally surpassed April's 712 killed. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday's attacks, but Sunni extremists frequently target the Shiite-led government's security forces and Shiite pilgrims, who they believe are not true Muslims. The attacks came a day after a series of car bomb explosions in and around Baghdad killed 14 people.

Obama defends gov't surveillance programs

SAN JOSE (AP) - President Barack Obama is defending his government's secret surveillance, saying Congress has repeatedly authorized the collection of Americans' phone records and foreigners' internet use.In his first comments since the programs were publicly revealed this week, Obama says safeguards are in place. He says nobody is listening to the content of phone calls. And he says the internet targeting is aimed at foreign nationals, not American citizens.Obama says he increased some of the safeguards on the programs after taking office. And he believes they help his administration stop terrorist attacks.

Police: Gunman killed 6 in Santa Monica shootings

SANTA MONICA (AP) - A gunman with an assault-style rifle killed at least six people in Santa Monica on Friday before police shot him to death in a gunfight in a college library, authorities said.Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks told reporters the rampage began at a house in the coastal city before the gunman, dressed all in black, made his way to Santa Monica College.Seabrooks said he killed two people in the house, which caught fire, two more people as he moved several blocks toward the campus, and then two more on campus. He entered the library and fired on other people but didn't hit them, Seabrooks said.Several students in the library reported hearing gunfire, and one witness said he heard a woman scream. The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene, Seabrooks said. She identified the gunman as 25 to 30 years old and dressed all in black, wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket. The campus was searched for a second shooter, and a man dressed entirely in black, with the words Life is a Gamble on the back of his sweatshirt, was seen being taken into custody by law enforcement officers. He did not appear to be wounded. We are not convinced 100 percent that the suspect who was killed operated in a solo or alone capacity, Seabrooks said. All of this unfolded about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from where President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon.Three women with gunshot wounds were admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Dr. Marshall Morgan, the chief of emergency medicine. One died, another was in surgery, and the third was in serious condition but doing well, he said.Three other women went to UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica with relatively minor injuries, Morgan said. One has shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire, he said.

Nadal, Ferrer set-up all Spanish French Open final

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Defending champion Rafael Nadal moved closer to an historic eighth French Open title Friday when he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (3/7), 9-7 in a titanic semi-final.In Sunday's title match, the third seed will face fourth-seeded compatriot David Ferrer who ended French hopes of a first champion in 30 years by sweeping past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2.Nadal will be aiming to be the first man to win the same major eight times while 31-year-old Ferrer will be appearing in his first Grand Slam final. He has reached the championship match at the 42nd time of asking but now faces overturning a 19-4 career deficit against his compatriot.Nadal, the third seed, took his Paris record to a staggering 58 wins from 59 matches after recovering from 4-2 down in the deciding set to clinch victory after 4 hours and 37 minutes.Friday's win was Nadal's 20th in 35 career clashes -- and 13th from 16 on clay -- against Djokovic. In a dramatic and controversial final set, Djokovic broke for 1-0 before Nadal levelled in the eighth game after the Serb had been handed a time violation and then lost a point when he collided with the net as he put away a smash.Djokovic even summoned the tournament supervisor onto the court to rage over the court conditions as he prepared to serve at 7-8.Nadal pounced, moving to three match points and clinched victory when Djokovic, who ended with an ugly 75 unforced errors, hit wild and long. It's a very special win for me and congratulations to Novak -- he's a great champion and he is going to win here at Garros one day, said Nadal, who had lost the pair's only other five-setter, the record-setting 2012 Australian Open final. When I was serving for the match it was against the wind so I knew that it would be a tough game.It was a similar match to the one in Australia in 2012 and he won. This time it is me that won and that is what makes sport so big.Djokovic was furious that his demands for the court to be watered were ignored.I was not asking to water the court because I want to make my opponent trip or do something like that. I was doing it for myself, because I felt that it got very dry and it was very slippery, he said.If one player says yes to watering of the court and the other says no, in the end whose opinion has more value? On Sunday, Nadal will be appearing in his ninth final since returning from a seven-month injury lay-off.During these seven months out of the game there were some low moments, but everybody supported me and there was a lot of positive energy, added the Spaniard, who has already claimed six titles in 2013.Nadal could have ended the tie before the fifth set as he was twice a set and a break up.Ferrer ended home hopes of sixth-seeded Tsonga who was out to match the feat of Yannick Noah, who last won the title for France in 1983.But it was a richly deserved reward for outstanding perseverance on the part of 31-year-old Ferrer, who reached his first Grand Slam final in his 42nd appearance, by far the longest wait in the Open Era.It will be the first all-Spanish final since 2002 when Albert Costa defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero.I am really happy for me to be in the final at Roland Garros. It's my first ever Grand Slam final, said Ferrer, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament .I am older, but more experienced. I am not too tired, so this is very important. To play the final against Rafael Nadal I need to be 100 percent to be able to play good against him.My opponent played better. There has to be a winner and a loser, said Tsonga.

Scotland beat Croatia 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

ZAGREB (AP) - A goal by Robert Snodgrass gave Scotland a surprising 1-0 victory over host Croatia in a World Cup qualifier Friday.Scotland's goal came in the 26th minute, after Shaun Maloney charged forward and the ball was deflected by Darijo Srna directly to Snodgrass, who slotted it into the net.Scotland was last in Group A entering the game and was without several of its regular starters, but earned its first victory in the qualifying campaign.Croatia was previously undefeated but suffered a costly loss in its fight with Belgium for top spot in the group.Croatia defender Gordon Schildenfeld said we really did not expect this. We conceded a stupid goal, missed some chances, and lost.In another match, Austria beat Sweden 2-1 in World Cup qualifier played at Vienna.Sweden looked in control of the match for the opening 25 minutes before conceding two goals within six minutes.Alaba scored from the penalty spot after Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson brought down Martin Harnik following a mistake by defender Jonas Olsson, who failed to clear the ball.In the 31st, Harnik's cross from the right found Janko, who beat Isaksson at the first post with a diving header.Johan Elmander reduced Sweden's deficit after being set up by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 81st.Austria now has 11 points from six matches, Sweden eight from five. Leader Germany has 16.

Alsonso fastest in 2nd practice for Canadian GP

Posted:

MONTREAL (AP) - Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in Friday's chilly and damp practice sessions at the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix, boosting Ferrari's hopes of ending Mercedes' recent monopolization of pole positions. The Spanish driver posted a lap of 1 minute, 14.818, just over a hundredth of a second faster than Lewis Hamilton, who is trying to deliver Mercedes' fifth consecutive pole.Romain Grosjean of Lotus was third fastest, ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg, who won the previous race at Monaco and has claimed the previous three poles for Mercedes.Alonso cautioned against reading too much into the practice times due to the damp conditions. The day started on a wet track from overnight rain, but the afternoon saw the track stay dry until a few spots fell with 15 minutes left on the clock. That allowed Alonso's time to hold up just when drivers usually post their quickest times. It depends on which moment you do your lap and the conditions on the circuit whether you are quickest or not, Alonso said. The most important thing was to evaluate some new parts we brought here, and the new tires that Pirelli brought as well. Some of it we managed to do.The rain led to some slipping and sliding, including a near-crash between Webber and Grosjean. Kimi Raikkonen's Lotus also went for a slide.Williams' Pastor Maldonado hit a wall late in the morning session and damaged his front wing, while Jules Bianchi's Marussia stopped on a slip road after 41 minutes, ending his session. Several others, including Button and Hamilton, had minor slides but kept going.Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who was seventh fastest on Friday behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa, was not discounting the Italian team's threat this weekend. On one lap, if you look at the time sheet, the Mercedes again looked very quick, Vettel said. The Ferrari looked competitive in both long and short runs. So those will be the main rivals. But never forget the Lotus. They could be a surprise in the race.Force India's Adrian Sutil set the eighth-fastest time, ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.

Cash stolen from father of Usain Bolt in Jamaica

KINGSTON (AP) - A day after a rare defeat for sprinter Usain Bolt, his father suffered another kind of loss back home in Jamaica.Thieves broke into the pickup truck of 57-year-old Wellesley Bolt and stole more than $4,000 in cash. The elder Bolt says the theft occurred while he was shopping in Falmouth on Jamaica's north coast. He said in a brief interview Friday that the thieves also made off with bank records and other documents he had stashed under the driver's seat.Police confirmed the theft report but said there have been no arrests.Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt is in Rome for the Golden Gala meet. Bolt lost by one-hundredth of a second Thursday in the 100 meters to American sprinter Justin Gatlin.

Oil prices rise on US job numbers

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices pushed higher Friday, sustaining a week-long climb broken momentarily by a short-lived drop after US job creation numbers for May came in at a moderate 175,000.The Labor Department data, which also put the US jobless rate slightly higher at 7.6 percent, was better than expected but traders in both London and New York sold off crude, with prices losing more than $1 a barrel, for the first half-hour after the release. The rebound was even faster, taking WTI crude for July delivery, the US benchmark, to $96.03 a barrel, up $1.27 for the day and $4.06, or 4.4 percent, for the week.In London Brent crude for July finished at $104.56 a barrel, up 95 cents from Thursday and $4.17 from a week earlier.Even if the jobs numbers were only middling, the positive reaction in US share markets to the jobs data, with the S&P 500 adding more than one percent, spilled over to oil, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Oil markets were taking the equity market's word for it that the 175,000 new jobs added to US non-farm payrolls was both strong enough to inspire some confidence in the underlying economy but not strong enough to allow the Fed to cut back on asset purchases, which would tighten interest rates, he said.Even so, the upside is limited, because -- even if they fell sharply this week -- US commercial stocks remain strong going into the summer.Inventories remain quite high and so we see limited potential for a sustained advance, he said.

Curiosity rover to head toward Mars mountain soon

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ten months after landing on Mars, the NASA rover Curiosity is finally about to pack up and head toward a mountain.Discoveries and longer-than-expected scientific studies delayed the long-awaited drive to Mount Sharp, where scientists are anxious to examine the rock layers.Mission scientists said Wednesday the six-wheel rover should start the trek to the mountain in a few weeks after making three quick observations of nearby rocks. The 5-mile (8-kilometer) journey is expected to take 10 months to a year with stops along the way.Since touching down near the Martian equator last year, Curiosity has discovered an ancient streambed and found evidence of a habitable environment long ago. It has yet to turn up signs of complex organic molecules that are fundamental to all living things.

Misbah angry at Ramdin over 'catch'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq slammed West Indies wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin for wrongly claiming a catch during Friday's gripping Champions Trophy clash at The Oval.Misbah scored a career-best 96 not out in his side's two-wicket defeat in south London but thought he was out for nought when Ramdin claimed a catch off man-of-the-match Kemar Roach.Australian umpire Steve Davis gave Misbah out but, following the intervention of English official Nigel Llong at square leg, the decision was referred to third umpire Tony Hill.Replays showed that while Ramdin had, initially, caught the ball, he had subsequently allowed it to spill out of his grasp.Eventually it was decided that Ramdin did not have full control over the ball and Misbah was reprieved.Had he been dismissed, Pakistan would have been 17 for four.As it was, they went on to make 170 all out before their bowlers made West Indies work hard to reach a seemingly modest victory total. What can I say about that? He (Ramdin) should have told (the umpire) what happened, said Misbah.I don't know what he was thinking at that time.I don't think I would be happy if my wicket-keeper did that, added Misbah. If you don't know if it is (a catch) then fine, but if you know it's not a catch you shouldn't claim it because it's not in the spirit of the game.West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo defended Ramdin against accusations of bad sportsmanship, insisting the keeper genuinely believed he'd held on for long enough to claim a fair catch.Denesh thought he honestly had control of the ball, Bravo said.He is a very honest player and history shows that we as a country don't have any stigma of negativity around us. We play the game in the right way. I don't see anything wrong with it.While Roach was denied the wicket of Misbah, he took the first three wickets to fall as Pakistan collapsed to 15 for three. The paceman finished with a man-of-the-match-winning return of three for 28 off 10 overs while off-spinner Sunil Narine took three for 34.West Indies then collapsed themselves before Ramdin and Roach saw them home with just under 10 overs left.Defeat effectively left Pakistan probably needing to win their final pool games against India and South Africa if they were to advance from Group B to the semi-finals.But Misbah insisted all was far from lost.It is possible. We have seen it happen so many times before, the Pakistan captain said. We just need to be a bit more responsible with our batting. We should have got 230 or 240 here. That would have been a good total.Even 15 or 20 runs could have made the difference. There is nothing to be worried about. We just need to score those extra runs.

Boston hospital cleans 2,500-year-old mummy

Posted:

BOSTON (AP) - A 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy came out of his coffin Friday to undergo cleaning and restoration at Massachusetts General Hospital. The mummy known as Padihershef has been on display at the third oldest general hospital in the United States since it received him as a gift from the city of Boston in 1823 as a medical oddity. He is one of the first complete mummies brought to the United States.A conservator trained in restoring ancient artifacts removed him from his coffin Friday and began using cotton swabs dabbed in saliva to wipe away salt deposits from his face. The salt has been slowly seeping out of his tissue, a result of the mummification process. Experts are also expected to do minor repair and stabilization work on his coffin. The whole process is expected to take three days. The mummy and his coffin will then be moved to a special horizontal case in which they will lie next to each other in the Ether Dome, a surgical amphitheater where William T. G. Morton demonstrated the first public surgery using anesthetic on Oct. 16, 1846.Padihershef was a 40-year-old stonecutter in the necropolis in Thebes, an ancient city on the west bank of the Nile, in what is todays Luxor. He was a gift from a Dutch diplomat who was happy with the city of Bostons hospitality, officials said.No one knows exactly how he lived or died. Experts are exploring those questions through a conservation project supported by the hospital and donors. In March, he was removed from his case and transported on a patient stretcher to the imaging suites in the hospital, where technicians subjected him to full body X-ray and CT scanning. Experts were surprised to see a broom handle embedded at the base of his head and running through his torso in what likely was a crude attempt to stabilize his head. There are no records to indicate when the repair was done and by whom, the hospital said on its website. The study was intended to produce images that could be compared with those gleaned from exams conducted in 1931 and 1976 and to determine the condition of his bones. Those earlier tests revealed his bones had interrupted growth lines that indicate a severe childhood illness that resulted in stunted growth.

California serial killer Richard Ramirez dies

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Richard Ramirez, the notorious serial killer known as the Night Stalker, died early Friday in a hospital, a state official said.Ramirez, 53, passed away this morning, San Quentin State Prison spokesman Lt. Sam Robinson told The Associated Press. No other details were released. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Ramirez died of natural causes. He had been housed on death row for decades and was awaiting execution, even though it has been years since anyone has been put to death in California. Ramirez had been taken from death row to Marin General Hospital.Ramirez was convicted of 13 murders that terrorized Southern California in 1984 and 1985, and was sentenced to death.Satanic symbols were left at murder scenes and some victims were forced to swear to Satan by the killer, who entered homes through unlocked windows and doors.Ramirez was captured and beaten in 1985 by residents of an East Los Angeles neighborhood while attempting a carjacking. At his first court appearance, Ramirez raised a hand with a pentagram drawn on it and yelled, Hail, Satan. After a four-year trial, one of the longest in U.S. history, Ramirez was sentenced to death in 1989. He also was convicted of many sexual assaults and burglaries. In 2006, the California Supreme Court upheld Ramirezs convictions and death sentence. In 2009, San Francisco police said DNA linked Ramirez to the April 10, 1984, killing of 9-year-old Mei Leung. She was killed in the basement of a residential hotel in San Franciscos Tenderloin neighborhood where she lived with her family.Ramirez had been staying at nearby hotels.Ramirez previously was tied to killings in Northern California. He was charged in the shooting deaths of Peter Pan, 66, and his wife, Barbara, in 1985 just before his arrest in Los Angeles, but he was never tried in that case.In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the convictions and sentence.
