Chelios, Niedermayer top 2013 Hockey Hall class Posted: LARRY LAGE (AP) - Chris Chelios and fellow defensemen Scott Niedermayer along with forward Brendan Shanahan found out Tuesday they will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November.I always said I'd go right until the tank was empty, Chelios said. And, I believe I did.Only Hall of Famer Gordie Howe was an older NHL player than Chelios, the only player in league history to play in at least 400 games with three different teams. His career ended with the Atlanta Thrashers during the 2009-10 season when he was 48.I was part of an era, Chris was part of a few, Niedermayer joked.Chelios, Niedermayer and Shanahan will be joined in the 2013 class by Geraldine Heaney, the third woman to be enshrined in the hall, and coach Fred Shero, who led the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup in 1974 and '75. He was selected posthumously in the builder category. There's no sense looking back as to why it didn't happen sooner, because today's a happy day to celebrate the fact that a guy that deserves it immensely has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame, Flyers chairman Ed Snider said.Chelios and Niedermayer earned hockey's biggest individual honor in their first year of eligibility, and Shanahan got in on his second shot.New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello raved about all three players, each of whom he had a connection to during their careers.Scott was an integral part of our success in New Jersey, not just on the ice, but off the ice, Lamoriello said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.Shanahan was a part of my first draft, back in 1987, and he went on to establish himself as one of the best, all-time power forwards in the history of the game. Chelios, who I was with in the 1996 World Cup and the Olympics, is one of the best success stories for an American hockey player.Shanahan was a teammate of Chelios' in Detroit, and played with Niedermayer during the Olympics in 2002 when Canada won gold by beating Chelios and the Americans in Salt Lake City. When you got to play with them, it was a thrill, Shanahan said. I spent some years playing with Cheli, and there's not another guy that you would want to go into a tough situation looking out for you.It absolutely makes it more special to go in with people I not only played against, but played with and got to know well.Shanahan and Niedermayer are members of what's known as the Triple Gold Club, a group of players who have won the worlds, the Olympics and a Stanley Cup.Each player is still working in the sport. Chelios is an adviser to hockey operations in Detroit. Niedermayer is an assistant coach in Anaheim. Shanahan is the NHL senior vice president of player safety.Niedermayer won four Stanley Cups in 17 full NHL seasons to go along with a Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy. He played for the New Jersey Devils from 1991-92 through the 2003-04 season and finished his career in Anaheim in 2010.Among the game's best U.S.-born players, Chelios won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman three times. The Chicagoan split much of his career with three storied franchises in Montreal, Chicago and Detroit and was asked which team he will be affiliated when he is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.U.S.A., he said.Shanahan finished his career with 656 goals and 698 assists. He won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, an Olympic gold medal and was the quintessential scoring power winger of his era.Shanahan started his career with the Devils, went on to play in St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit and for the New York Rangers before ending his playing career back in New Jersey.Heaney was a defenseman on Canada's gold-medal-winning team at the 2002 Olympics and is considered one of the best female players in history. As a young girl playing hockey, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be going into the hall, she said.
New Zealand suspends Tonga aid over safety concerns Posted: WELLINGTON (AFP) - New Zealand said Wednesday it had suspended a multi-million dollar aid programme in Tonga over safety concerns stemming from the Pacific nation's plans to use a Chinese-made plane for domestic services. There were concerns about the safety certification for the MA60 aircraft and a NZ$10.5 million (US$8.2 million) tourism development programme was on hold until they were resolved, a spokeswoman for Foreign Minister Murray McCully said.I can confirm that the programme has been suspended, she told AFP.The MA60 turboprop, built by China's AVIC Xian Aircraft Industry Company, has been the subject of a number of safety scares in recent months.Myanmar grounded its MA60 fleet in June after two incidents where aircraft skidded off runways, while Indonesia ordered special checks on its fleet after one crash-landed in the country's east.No one was seriously injured in those accidents, but 25 people died in May 2011 when an MA60 operated by Indonesia's Merpati crashed in West Papua province. The Tongan MA60 is a gift from the Chinese government and arrived in the island nation last weekend. The government intends to lease it to a new airline called Real Tonga, set up to service popular tourist destinations in the outer islands after New Zealand-based operator Chathams Pacific withdrew earlier this year. The Matangi Tonga news website reported that the government had promised the aircraft would not be allowed to fly until it fully complied with international aviation standards.New Zealand is one of Tonga's main aid donors, although China has played an increasing role in recent years, with much of its assistance coming through so-called soft loans that have a five-year interest-free period.
Obama speaks to Qatar, UAE leaders on Egypt Posted: WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says President Barack Obama has spoken with the leaders of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, two countries with opposing loyalties in Egypt's political turmoil.Obama and Qatar's Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed the urgency for Egypt's military to return control to a democratic, civilian government. Qatar was a major supporter of ousted President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood. With Emirati Crown Prince Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Obama discussed concerns about violence and the need for a political process inclusive of all religious and political groups. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are promising Egypt's new leadership $8 billion in aid, a major boost that rewards the military for unseating Morsi.
Former chief of stricken Japan nuclear plant dies Posted: TOKYO (AP) - The nuclear power plant chief who led the life-risking battle to stabilize the cripple Fukushima reactors when they were spiraling into meltdowns two years ago has died of esophageal cancer. He was 58.Masao Yoshida died Tuesday in a Tokyo hospital, Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Yoshimi Hitosugi said. TEPCO officials said his illness was not related to radiation exposure.Yoshida was in charge of the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant when the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami knocked out its power and cooling systems, causing reactor meltdowns and massive radiation leaks.Recalling the first few days when three reactors suffered meltdowns in succession, Yoshida later said: There were several instances when I thought we were all going to die here. I feared the plant was getting out of control and we would be finished.Yoshida was a tall man with a loud voice who wasn't afraid of talking back to higher-ups and was known to his workers as a caring figure. Even then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who was extremely frustrated by TEPCO's initial lack of information and slow handling, said after meeting him that Yoshida could be trusted. On March 12, after the Unit 1 reactor building had an explosion, Yoshida kept pumping sea water into the reactor to cool it, ignoring an order to stop from TEPCO headquarters as Kan feared sea water risked triggering a fission chain reaction. Yoshida was reprimanded for disobeying but later praised for his judgment that eventually helped keep the reactor from turning worse.I bow deeply in respect to his leadership and decisiveness, Kan said on Twitter.Yoshida was interviewed for 10 hours by a member of the government-commissioned panel examining the accident. The former investigator, Kunio Yanagida, said Yoshida's death is a major loss for future investigations into the disaster at the plant, where radiation levels are still too high to allow a full, on-site examination.Yoshida studied nuclear engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and joined TEPCO in 1979. He worked in the company's nuclear department before landing a top job at the Fukushima Dai-ichi a year before the crisis.Yoshida stepped down as plant chief in December 2011, citing his illness, after workers had begun to bring the plant under control.Yoshida had brought workers together and kept their spirits up to survive the crisis, and had expressed hopes of returning to work for Fukushima's recovery even after falling ill, TEPCO President Naomi Hirose said.He literally put his life at risk in dealing with the accident, Hirose said in a statement. We keep his wishes to our heart and do utmost for the reconstruction of Fukushima, which he tried to save at all cost.
Egypt: Work on forming interim cabinet to begin Posted: CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's interim authorities, boosted by $8 billion in Gulf aid, start work on forming a cabinet on Wednesday, a week after the elected Islamist president was ousted by the army leading to a wave of violence in which at least 90 people were killed.Wrangling between political groups over a decree setting the rules for the transition, designed to usher in parliamentary elections within about six months, could point to a bumpy road ahead.Events of the last seven days are sure to overshadow the normally festive start to the fasting month of Ramadan, which begins on Wednesday, with Egypt's 84 million people more divided than at any time in their modern history.Thousands of Islamists rallied outside a mosque in northeast Cairo overnight, where they have braved the heat and dust in a 12-day vigil, refusing to budge until toppled President Mohamed Mursi is returned to power.Just a few hundred metres away, outside the military barracks where he is believed to be held, 55 Mursi supporters were killed at dawn on Monday when troops opened fire. The movement says the victims were praying in peace. The government says the Islamists provoked the violence by attacking the soldiers. The authorities announced an investigation into 650 suspects for offences from thuggery to murder and terrorism. Egyptian state media praised the army and denounced Monday's violence as the work of terrorists.Amnesty International said that whether or not the security forces acted in response to provocations, they were guilty of using grossly disproportionate force.Egyptians are still reeling a week after Mursi's overthrow, which initially sparked wild celebrations in Cairo and beyond by millions of people who wanted him gone, fed up with economic stagnation and what they saw as an Islamist power grab.To Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, however, his removal amounted to the reversal of democracy by entrenched interests who would never accept their election victories. The Brotherhood denies it had an aggressive Islamist agenda.Fearing a return to the suppression endured for decades under autocratic rulers, members of the long-banned movement took to the streets. On Friday, pro- and anti-Mursi protesters clashed in running street battles that swept the country. Some 35 people were killed. The only road map is the restoration of the president elected by the people, said Hoda Ghaneya, 45, a Muslim Brotherhood activist. We will not accept less than that, she said. Even if they kill us all.In lawless North Sinai, two people were killed and six wounded late on Tuesday when Islamist militants attacked a checkpoint, amid concern that the anger is behind a spike in violence in the region bordering Israel.Monday's bloodshed raised alarm among key donors such as the United States and the European Union, as well as in Israel, with which Egypt has had a U.S.-backed peace treaty since 1979.Wealthy Gulf Arab states, long suspicious of the Muslim Brotherhood, stepped in swiftly with financial support that could relieve pressure on the transitional authorities at a time of economic stagnation. The United Arab Emirates offered a grant of $1 billion and a loan of $2 billion. Saudi Arabia offered $3 billion in cash and loans, and an additional $2 billion worth of fuel.Coffers are desperately short since Arab Spring unrest drove away tourists and investors. On the political front, where the army is under pressure to plot a path back to democracy quickly, it seemed to be a case of one step forward, one step back.Tuesday saw progress when interim head of state Adli Mansour named liberal economist Hazem el-Beblawi as acting prime minister and former U.N. diplomat Mohamed ElBaradei as deputy president responsible for foreign affairs. But underlining the scale of the task ahead, ElBaradei's National Salvation Front, Egypt's main liberal coalition, itself rejected the constitutional decree and demanded changes be made.Less surprisingly, the Brotherhood, which has rejected all cooperation with the military-backed interim powers, also dismissed the decree, while the ultra-conservative Nour Party, which initially backed the road map, said it was not satisfied. On the other side of the political divide, the Tamarud youth movement which mobilised millions to take to the streets against Mursi, said the decree had not been run past them, and they would propose amendments. The United States gave a cautious welcome to the road map to quick elections on Tuesday. We are encouraged the interim government has laid out a plan for the path forward, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a daily briefing in Washington. She said the Obama administration had been in touch with representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood but that there had been no contact with Mursi since his arrest.
Drone strikes had their uses: Shuja Pasha Posted: ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistan reached an understanding with the United States on drone strikes targeting Islamist militants and the attacks can be useful, according leaked remarks from a former intelligence chief.Pakistan publicly condemns US missile attacks on Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives as a violation of its sovereignty, but the new revelations are the latest sign of double-dealing in private. They come in findings of a Pakistani investigation into how Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden evaded detection for nearly a decade, which were published by the Al-Jazeera news network Monday.Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who headed Pakistan's premier Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency at the time of bin Laden's killing in 2011, told investigators that drone strikes had their uses. The DG (director general) said there were no written agreements. There was a political understanding, the report said. The Americans had been asked to stop drone strikes because they caused civilian casualties, but it was easier to say no to them in the beginning, but 'now it was more difficult' to do so, it quoted the former spymaster as saying.Admittedly the drone attacks had their utility, but they represented a breach of national sovereignty. They were legal according to American law but illegal according to international law, the report quoted the ISI chief as saying. He also confirmed that Shamsi air base, in southwestern Pakistan, had been used for US drone strikes against people in the country.Pakistan ordered US personnel to leave the base after botched US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November 2011.His interviews also laid bare extraordinary levels of distrust between Pakistan and the United States, particularly in 2011 when relations plummeted over the US raid that killed bin Laden and a CIA contractor who shot dead two Pakistanis.Pasha said US arrogance knew no limits and accused the Americans of waging psychological warfare over the whereabouts of Taliban leader Mullah Omar and bin Laden's successor Ayman al-Zawahiri.He quoted a US intelligence officer as saying you are so cheap... we can buy you with a visa, and said himself that systemic failures showed Pakistan was a failing state. The Pakistani report condemned the US raid as an American act of war and said the military should have responded much more quickly to a three-hour operation, 100 miles inside its territory. It was Pakistan's greatest humiliation since East Pakistan seceded in 1971, it said.

OGRA misguiding courts in CNG case: APCNG Posted: ISLAMABAD (Online) - The All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) on Tuesday said OGRA has been violating its own rules and misguiding courts in a bid to destroy Rs 400 billion CNG sector to please powerful energy mafia.Asking the Prime Minister to taken note of plot, it said that the sector moving wheels of the economy in the most economical manner is victim of conspiracies of those who have been trying to wipe off the sector which will never be allowed.Thousands of licences of the CNG operators have been cancelled illegally on the pretext of clause 18 of the CNG rules 1992 wherein there is no mention of cancellation of licenses, said Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha, Chairman APCNGA.Speaking at a press conference, he said that Supreme Court in its decision on July 5, 2013 has not ordered cancellation of licences while it order number SCMIR-705 (1995) says that licenses of pumps having NOC cannot be cancelled on safety concerns. He said the OGRA has been hatching conspiracies against the CNG sector since long leaving the CNG sector and the owners of 3.5 million vehicles converted on CNG in the lurch.Whole world accepts the benefits of environment-friendly and economical fuel. Many countries including US have been promoting CNG while those having no natural gas have been importing LNG to convert it to CNG before providing it to masses and public transport, he informed. However, in Pakistan, he said, some corrupt economists and pseudo intellectuals who are backed by a cabal of the wealthy and influential have been trying to form a negative public opinion against CNG sector while offering costly alternatives.Ghiyas Paracha said that we have established world’s No. 1 CNG industry by investing Rs 400 billion which reduced environmental degradation, reduced inflation, saved billion in oil import bill and facilitated masses in every nook and corned of the country. The leader of the CNG sector said that we helped convert 90 per cent vehicles on CNG, paid highest taxes while using minimum amount of natural gas on 100 per cent efficiency and provided jobs to millions. Some incidents attributed to CNG were result of negligence of poor taxi drivers and transporters who were forced to use petrol and LPG in unsafe manner due to CNG load shedding. He added that the corrupt government officials were involved in the theft of gas for masses pay the price. He said that incompetent bureaucracy has been misguiding courts while the APCNGA lacks resources to pay heavy fees to the lawyers of superior courts every now and then. The APCNGA will never tolerate conspiracies of mafia dreaming to grab whole energy market of Pakistan on the cost of economy and masses, he vowed.Paracha asked the Prime
PPMA demands of govt to make DRAP functional Posted: ISLAMABAD (Online) - The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has demanded of the government to make the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) a functional body immediately and to appoint its chief on a permanent basis.Export orders worth millions of dollars of pharmaceutical industry are stuck due to non-function of DRAP. In addition, the routine day-to-day functions are facing obstacles at DRAP which results in delays in exports. On one hand, Pakistani pharmaceutical industry and business houses are trying to increase export; they are not getting any support from DRAP.On the other hand, the government seeks aid from IMF. With such scenario, there is bound to be lack of conviction by the pharmaceutical industry to increase its exports.Jawaid Akhai, Chairman Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) said that the pharmaceutical industry is facing hardships in delivering affordable and life saving drugs to patients which has resulted in a shortage, mainly because of rampant corruption at DRAP and its toothless decisions. There has been no meeting held of the registration board, licensing board, or pricing committee in the last six months. Due to this sorry state of affairs, 16,000 products are stuck at various levels of DRAP, he added. The pharmaceutical industry has started to lose hope as different local pharmaceutical giants mull over the possibility of moving their businesses to different countries which have been offering incentives to them for the last many years.Instead of facilitating local pharmaceutical companies to increase their exports, DRAP is bent on taking decisions which are detrimental to investors in the pharmaceutical sector. The regulatory authority has recently imposed extra charges on drug exporters whereas it hiked various fees, 20 to 50 times in some cases, which discouraged exporters to continue their ventures to different countries due to the sudden surge of business cost, he said.

Teams involved in crazy 79-0, 67-0 wins suspended Posted: ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine figured they needed a big win in the final round at an amateur tournament to outdo the other and earn promotion to Nigerias professional football leagues.Their wins were definitely big: 79-0 and 67-0.The results have sparked outrage, an indefinite suspension of the four clubs involved in the games, and an investigation into match-fixing by the Nigeria Football Federation. The NFF on Tuesday called the results from the tournament on Monday in the northeastern city of Bauchi a mind-boggling show of shame. The scorelines were scandalous, the NFF added. The teams involved, their players and officials, match officials, (tournament) coordinator and anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter would (will) be severely dealt with, NFF director of competitions Mohammed Sanusi said.Chasing a place in Nationwide League Division 3, Nigerias lowest professional league, Plateau United Feeders reportedly scored 72 of their mountain of goals against Akurba FC in the second half. A rate of more than a goal a minute. In fact, a goal about every 40 seconds. Non-stop for 45 minutes. At the same time, Police Machine reportedly swept 61 goals past Babayaro FC in the second half after leading by a relatively modest 6-0 at halftime.Surely no team can be that good? Or that bad?In theory, Plateau United Feeders won promotion to the big leagues having scored 81 goals in three games. Police Machine ultimately could manage only 69.Plateau and Police won their opening games 2-0, then drew 0-0 when they met in the second round, meaning goals would be the decisive factor for promotion to the big time if both won their final games. They got the goals they wanted, and a suspension and a match-fixing investigation. This is a scandal of huge proportions, NFF vice president Mike Umeh said. The four teams involved are suspended immediately and indefinitely, pending further sanctions. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and get to the bottom of it.One comment on Twitter maybe summed it all up: What sport is this? someone called Tip asked.
