Iraq: Blasts at Sunni mosques in Baghdad kill 21 Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - Bombs exploded outside two Sunni mosques in Baghdad late Saturday, killing at least 21 people leaving prayers and extending a wave of daily violence rippling across Iraq since the start of the holy month of Ramadan, authorities said.A separate attack at a funeral northeast of the capital killed at least three others.Police said the first Baghdad blast went off around 10 p.m. near the gate of the Khalid bin al-Walid mosque in the capital's southern Dora neighborhood, a largely Sunni Muslim area. It struck just after the end of special late-evening prayers held during Ramadan. At least 16 people were killed and 31 were wounded, police said. A hospital official confirmed the casualty toll.Soon after, a car bomb exploded at another Sunni worship center, the Mullah Huwaish mosque, in the Hay al-Jami'a area in western Baghdad. That blast killed five and wounded 19, according to police and health officials.Iraq is weathering its worst eruption of violence in half a decade, raising fears the country is heading back toward the widespread sectarian fighting that peaked in 2006 and 2007. More than 2,600 people have been killed since the start of April. The pace of the bloodshed has picked up since Ramadan began Wednesday, including a suicide bombing at a coffee shop in the northern city of Kirkuk late Friday that killed dozens. There has been no claim of responsibility for the recent wave of attacks.Sunni extremists, including Al Qaeda's Iraq branch, frequently target Shiites, security forces and civil servants in an effort to undermine the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. They also could be behind Saturday's attack on the Sunni mosques, hoping that the bombings will spark a sectarian backlash against Shiites.Shiite militias, which have been remobilizing and sending fighters to confront mostly Sunni rebels in neighboring Syria, also could be to blame.Once-rare attacks on Sunni places of worship have risen in recent months as sectarian tensions grow, raising the prospect that Shiite militias are growing more active.Iraq's minority Sunnis have been protesting for months against the Shiite-led government, alleging they receive second-class treatment. Sunni militant groups have tried to tap into that anger by linking their cause to that of the demonstrators. In another attack Saturday, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a funeral in the town of al-Abbara, near the city of Baqouba, which is about 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Police and hospital officials said that attack killed three and wounded 10.All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to journalists.Earlier in the day, authorities in Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, ordered all cafes in that city to be temporarily shut down a day after a suicide attack there killed at least 39 people.Kirkuk police chief Maj. Gen. Jamal Tahir said his officers could not guarantee the security of patrons at the dozens of teahouses and coffee shops scattered across the city. It is unclear when the shops will be allowed to reopen.Kirkuk is a flashpoint for ethnic tensions, with its mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen holding competing claims to control of the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-ruled region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed.
Syrian rebels, Al Qaeda fighters battle in Aleppo Posted: BEIRUT (AP) - Western-backed opposition fighters and a faction of Al Qaeda-linked rebels turned their guns on each other Saturday in Syria's largest city, battling for control of a key checkpoint in the latest eruption of infighting among the forces trying to topple President Bashar Assad's regime, activists said. The clashes between rebels affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant underscored the growing phenomenon of rebel-on-rebel violence that has sapped strength from the broader anti-Assad movement. It also underscores the rebels' inability even more than two years into the conflict to unite around a unified command, as well as the deepening rift between more secular opposition fighters and Islamic extremists in the rebel ranks. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Saturday's clashes were focused on the strategic checkpoint in Aleppo's Bustan al-Qasr district that serves as the sole gateway between rebel-held eastern districts and the government-controlled areas in the west. Earlier this week, Al Qaeda-linked militants seized the checkpoint and closed it for several days, cutting the flow of food supplies to the government-held quarters of the city. That spurred protests by residents suffering from food shortages at the start of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan. The Observatory said the fighting rattled the neighborhood throughout the morning, but subsided by the afternoon as the Al Qaeda-linked rebels pulled out of the area. It was not clear which group was in control of the checkpoint, where residents were staging a protest to vent their anger at soaring food prices. The area also witnessed clashes between rebels and government troops. One of the most troubling outbursts of infighting among opposition fighters took place Friday, when the FSA said one of its commanders, Kamal Hamami, was shot dead by Al Qaeda militants in the Jabal al-Turkoman mountain area in the coastal province of Latakia. Hamami, known as Abu Basir, served in the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, a group headed by a secular-minded moderate that has the support of Western powers.Activists monitoring Syria's more than 2-year-old conflict have previously reported sporadic infighting among rebel groups over control of the territory they've captured in the north along the border with Turkey. Those clashes were mostly between Kurdish and Arab rebels, and have subsided since a ceasefire agreement was reached earlier this year. The fighting between moderate and jihadi groups that have for months battled Assad's regime together have become more frequent in recent weeks. The clashes have largely focused on border crossings with Turkey and vital installations, like bakeries, water wells, petrol stations and checkpoints in the north, according to the Observatory.Another activist said the fighting is aimed at establishing control over the flow of food and aid to the residents. Each group is also trying to set up governing structures over the territory in the north the opposition has controlled for a year and take a cut of money from goods being smuggled into Syria over the border with Turkey. The activists did not want to be quoted by name for fear of reprisal from both groups.Militant Islamic groups, including those with links to Al Qaeda, have been the most effective fighting force on the opposition side in the past year, spearheading many of the attacks that captured military bases, towns and villages and whole neighborhoods in Aleppo. In late February, Islamic battalions led the assault and conquered the eastern city of Raqqa, making it the first Syrian city to entirely fall under rebel control. Moderate factions are now fighting jihadi groups for a say in running of Raqqa. In the central province of Homs, video emerged Saturday that appeared to show a government airstrike on the Krak des Chevaliers, one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles. Government troops have been pressing an offensive against rebels in the province in recent months, and the town, which goes by the same name as the castle, has been under attack by regime troops for the past four days. The Observatory said Syrian warplanes carried out at least three airstrikes in the area on Friday, but the activist group could not confirm whether the fortress itself had been hit. It also said government forces have ordered residents to evacuate the town, apparently in preparation for a full-scale attack on the area. The imposing Krak des Chevaliers, which towers above the surrounding countryside from its hilltop perch, has a storied history. It held off a siege by the Muslim warrior Saladin nearly 900 years ago, and was lauded centuries later by Lawrence of Arabia for its beauty. The fortress has already been damaged over the course of the civil war, but if the hit it took Friday is confirmed, it would mark the worst destruction to the building so far.An amateur video posted to YouTube appeared to show a missile striking one of the castle's towers, sending a plume of smoke and dust into the sky. The off-camera narrator says the date is July 12, 2013. Another video purportedly taken from inside showed a hole in the thick stone ceiling of the castle, and a mound of debris and heavy stones under the open roof. The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted. Many of Syria's archaeological sites have been badly damaged by the country's civil war. Aleppo's centuries-old covered market was gutted by fire last year, while in April, the 11th-century minaret of the famed Umayyad Mosque that towered over the narrow stone alleyways of Aleppo's old quarter collapsed during fighting between troops and rebels.
Ambush kills 7 UN peacekeepers in Sudan's Darfur Posted: CAIRO (AP) - Gunmen ambushed a United Nations peacekeeping team Saturday in Sudan's western region of Darfur, killing seven and wounding another 17 in the deadliest ever single attack on the international force in the country. The assault included sustained heavy fire from machine guns and possibly rocket-propelled grenades, targeting the force some 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of the town of Khor Abeche, U.N. forces spokesman Chris Cycmanick said. Reinforcements later arrived to rescue the wounded, who included two female police advisers, the force said in a statement. It wasn't immediately clear if any civilian personnel accompanied the team into the ambush, Cycmanick said. He declined to give the nationalities of those killed and wounded in the attack. About 40 countries have contributed military personnel or police to the peacekeeping force. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. A February report by a U.N. panel of experts said that some armed opposition groups angry about the presence of peacekeepers have called the force a legitimate target.Peacekeepers have been targeted by assailants in the past in the region since the international force began its work there in 2008. In the last fatal attack, gunmen shot dead a Nigerian peacekeeper in April in East Darfur State. Before Saturday's attack, 150 people associated with the U.N. mission in Darfur had been killed while on duty in the region, according to the force's website. The joint African Union-U.N. peacekeeping force, dubbed UNAMID, was established to protect civilians in Darfur, but also contributes to security for those providing humanitarian aid, verifying agreements, political reconciliation efforts and promoting human rights. It has about 16,500 troops and military observers and over 5,000 international police.Darfur has been gripped by bloodshed since 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum. Fighting also erupts between tribes in the region. More than 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict.Unrest continues to grip the region. About 300,000 people have fled fighting throughout Darfur in the first five months of this year, the U.N. has said. The mission condemns in the strongest possible terms those responsible for this heinous attack on our peacekeepers, said Mohamed Ibn Chambas, a joint special representative of the force. The perpetrators should be on notice that they will be pursued for this crime and gross violation of international humanitarian law.More than 100 U.N. peacekeepers were killed last year alone on duty in the Darfur and Abyei regions of Sudan, Congo, Ivory Coast and other countries. Eight more civilian contractors, such as pilots, also died on deployment with peacekeeping missions in 2012.
Planned China nuclear plant axed after protest: report Posted: BEIJING (AFP) - Plans for a nuclear processing plant in southern China have been cancelled, media reported Saturday, following the latest in a series of protests that reveal growing environmental concerns in the country.Almost 1,000 people on Friday walked through the centre of Guangdong province's Jiangmen City, which is 30 kilometres (20 miles) away from the proposed facility at Longwan Industrial Park, the local Jiangmen Daily said. The demonstration, which was billed as an innocent stroll, was organised online in opposition to the fuel processing plant, which some domestic reports say could have provided enough fuel for about half of China's atomic energy needs -- or 1,000 tonnes of uranium -- by 2020. The 37 billion yuan ($6 billion) project, which features uranium conversion and enrichment facilities, was cancelled on Saturday, state-run news agency Xinhua said, citing local officials. The project was the first nuclear fuel production plant planned for southeast China, china.org.cn said, a website under the information department of the State Council. We don't need such projects to boost the economy, a resident surnamed Liu, who was attending the protest, was quoted by the website as saying. Demonstrations over environmental issues have increased in China, where three decades of rapid and unfettered industrial expansion have taken their toll. Similar incidents are reported regularly around the country, many over projects that people say are linked to corruption, but authorities typically quash the protests and push ahead with their plans. Local authorities in the coastal city of Xiamen cancelled plans for a chemical plant after thousands took part in a protest in 2007. A huge protest in the northeastern city of Dalian in 2011 prompted authorities to announce a similar climbdown.
18 dead in Moscow truck-bus crash Posted: MOSCOW (AFP) - At least 18 people were killed and 40 injured in a horrific traffic accident outside Moscow Saturday when a gravel truck smashed into a bus packed with passengers, officials said.Television pictures showed the bus had been cut into two pieces and turned into a tangle of black wreckage by the force of the crash, one of the deadliest accidents around the Russian capital in recent years.Police said it was thought to have occurred when the truck turned onto a main road and ploughed into the bus.The head of the capital's health department, Georgy Golukhov, told the RIA Novosti news agency that injuries had been especially severe as the bus passengers were also hit with the gravel the truck was carrying. The television pictures showed emergency workers shovelling through the black gravel that had been showered over the road. Moscow deputy mayor Pyotr Birukov said that the driver, a 46-year-old Armenian, had been fined for traffic violations six times over the last year. The driver, who survived the crash, has been hospitalised and is being interrogated by police, Birukov added. Of the injured, around 25 are still hospitalised with 15 in a serious condition and the other 10 with injuries of medium seriousness, the RIA Novosti news agency said, quoting the health ministry.
Khan vows to build on Al Fayed's work at Fulham Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Fulham's new owner Shahid Khan vowed to build on the foundations left by Mohamed Al Fayed as the Pakistan-born billionaire arrived at Craven Cottage for the first time on Saturday following his takeover.Khan, who also owns NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars, struck an agreement with Al Fayed on Friday that put the Premier Leage club under new ownership for the first time in 16 years. The 62-year-old is reported to have paid around 150 million for 100 per cent control and he met the media for the first time on Saturday.Khan was quick to pay tribute to Al Fayed, but also made it clear he believes there is more to achieve for a club who finished 12th in the Premier League last season and reached the Europa League final in 2010 There's a great leadership here and I have a lot to learn. But I'll give the team all the support it needs to be successful on the pitch, Khan said.We have to respect history. I am going to listen to the fans and decide, but we have to make sure it (the club) is sustainable. It's a very special place. This is the perfect club for me at a perfect time. It's the passing of the baton, taking it to the next level.Al Fayed, the 84-year-old former Harrods owner, had transformed Fulham from a third-tier outfit to an established top-flight side since taking over in 1997.And Khan, instantly recognisable due to his flamboyant moustache, made it clear the controversial Egyptian deserved respect for his efforts.I think it is incredible, he said. The man rescued Fulham and had a great vision which he's shared with me. I think it's very, very important to all the Fulham fans.I really enjoyed getting to know him. He's a wonderful guy, very much to the point.Khan, who was born in Lahore but now has American citizenship, is ranked 179th in the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans with an estimated worth of $2.5 billion after making his fortune as a car parts manufacturer. He already has ties to London, with the Jaguars scheduled to play one regular season game a season at Wembley for the next four years.Khan has described London as the missing piece for the Jaguars, who do not sell out all their home games at their base in north Florida. While the purchase of Fulham is not overtly connected to that ambition, it will allow Khan to promote both brands in tandem on either side of the Atlantic. And he hinted there would be some interaction between his two teams. These are true distinct clubs that will operate differently and independently, but there is a huge amount of synergy, Khan said.Al Fayed infamously unveiled a statue of Michael Jackson outside Craven Cottage in 2011, claiming the pop star 'loved Fulham' and telling Cottagers fans they could 'go to hell' if they did not like it.Asked if the status would remain in place, Khan said: I've been an owner less than a day. We have to preserve and respect history but we have to move forward. I'll reflect on it and listen to the fans, then decide.Al Fayed added: It's a monument, listed. If he dares to move it he will be in big troubleBut he owns a club with the same prestige and fame, I'm sure he'll do a great job.I think the fans respect my decision because they know what I've done for them for 18 years. I'm sure they're happy that I wouldn't pass the club to any junkie.Fulham are the sixth Premier League club under American ownership, joining Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Sunderland.
France beat Uruguay on penalties to win U20 title Posted: ISTANBUL (AP) - France won the Under-20 World Cup for the first time after drawing with Uruguay 0-0 after extra time and winning the penalty shootout 4-1 on Saturday.France goalkeeper Alphonse Areola saved Uruguay's first two penalties from Emiliano Valazquez and Giorgian De Arrascatea before Dimitri Foulquier converted the fourth for France, giving the Europeans an insurmountable lead. The French celebrated for minutes on the field with rhythmic dance moves, singing and waving to fans, before captain Paul Pogba lifted the trophy. In the 36-year history of the event, France is the sixth European champion, but only the second in the past 20 years following Spain's victory in 1999.Uruguay suffered its second defeat in a final after losing to Argentina in 1997.France had a modest start at its fifth appearance to the tournament with a draw against the United States and a defeat by Spain, but the team improved in the knockout stage.France found fluency in its attacking game and eased past host Turkey (4-1) and Uzbekistan (4-0), before edging Ghana 2-1 in the semifinals.I didn't hesitate about the players at all, France coach Pierre Mankowski said about the slow start. The first round of matches is always difficult ... it was a killer group.Pogba, who was voted best player of the tournament by FIFA, kept the balance in the team by leading the midfield, while strikers Yaya Sanogo, Florian Thauvin and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck shared nine goals between them to make France the second-highest scoring team of the tournament with 15 goals in seven matches, one short of Ghana, which beat Iraq 3-0 earlier Saturday to finish third.France conceded just two goals in the knockout stage, and kept a clean sheet in the final despite missing suspended defender Samuel Umtiti, who was sent off for a second booking against Ghana.Uruguay was not regarded as one of the tournament favorites despite defeating 2011 champion Brazil in qualifying. There was hardly any difference between both teams today, coach Juan Verzeri said. Small details were always going to decide the final. I am proud of what we've achieved. It beat Spain in extra time in the quarterfinals and was held to 1-1 by unheralded Iraq in the semis before advancing on penalties.Six players of Verzeri's squad missed out on a world title for the second time after also losing the Under-17 World Cup final to host Mexico in 2011.In Saturday's final, France dominated ball possession, but Uruguay created more danger, mainly through Lopez, who had four more shots on goal. After the match, Uruguay's Guillermo De Amores was named best goalkeeper of the tournament by FIFA, while Ghana's Ebenezer Assifuah won the Golden Boot for being the top goal-scorer with six.
Motorcycling: Marquez on pole in Germany Posted: SACHSENRING (AFP) - Spanish MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez will start in pole position for Sunday's German Grand Prix after finishing quickest in qualifying on Saturday.Honda's championship leader Dani Pedrosa missed qualifying after suffering a head injury and fractured shoulder in Saturday's third practice session and is rated doubtful for Sunday's race.If he does manage to line up he will set off from the back of the grid in 12th position. The 20-year-old Marquez secured the third pole of his career with a fastest qualifying time of 1min 21.311sec, with Britain's Cal Crutchlow second at 0.123sec and Italy's Valentino Rossi third at 0.182secs.The goal is always to get on the podium, said Marquez, before admitting he was concerned about the form of veteran Rossi.Valentino looks very strong, he'll be difficult to beat.Having claimed his first win since 2010 at the Dutch GP a fortnight ago, six-time world MotoGP champion Rossi was happy with his first front row start in three years.I'm fighting back with the best. Qualifying times like that confirm my result at Assen, beamed the 34-year-old Italian.Accidents in practice were suffered not only by Pedrosa but also reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo, who is already out of Sunday's showdown after crashing on Friday, two weeks after fracturing his collarbone at the Dutch GP.Lorenzo underwent surgery in Barcelona on Saturday to have a fresh plate inserted to support his collarbone. For Jorge it is a great pity because he made a small mistake and unfortunately landed on the wrong shoulder, Rossi said of Lorenzo, who finished fifth at the Dutch GP in Assen, despite racing just 36 hours after surgery. After what he did in Assen, he was very close to a superhero. It's a pity also for his championship but now I think he's made the right choice to take some quiet time to recover.Marquez's lap of 1min 21.311sec was three tenths of a second off Casey Stoner's best ever lap of the Sachsenring, achieved in 2008, as he stormed to his third pole after Texas and Le Mans.Crutchlow will start inside the top two for the third race in succession despite two heavy falls on Friday, which have left the Englishman in pain.Germany's Stefan Bradl heads up the second row at his home event, whereas a top five result came thanks to a stunning effort from 23-year-old Spaniard Aleix Espargaro.Ducati duo Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso start in sixth and ninth, better than expected, while Yamaha Tech 3's Bradley Smith and Honda Gresini's Alvaro Bautista will fill slots seven and eight.
Golf: Woods, McIlroy set for second duel in China Posted: BEIJING (AFP) - Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will go head-to-head in a two-man exhibition for the second time in China following last year's outlandish Duel at Jinsha Lake, organisers said Saturday.Golf's world number one and two will appear at an as yet unnamed venue on October 28, reprising their one-day meeting a year earlier which became infamous for its unruly crowds and gratuitous displays of wealth.Rory and I have played against and with each other a lot over the past few years, and he beat me in China last time so I'm looking forward to playing again, said Woods in a press release. We're good friends, but both of us love to win, so I'm expecting more great golf, added the 14-time major-winner.I've played in China since 2001 and the event last year showed me there's still huge enthusiasm for growing the game in cities all across the country, especially as it's again an Olympic sport in 2016.McIlroy won last year's event in Zhengzhou but it is remembered mainly for the behaviour of fans who stole balls from the driving range and were rugby-tackled by staff as they mobbed the players on the fairways. The 18-hole strokeplay tournament, held to advertise a new housing development, also featured the bizarre sight of models standing at the tee boxes, helicopters, drum majorettes, fireworks and a luxury yacht.Few details were revealed about the upcoming event but McIlroy said he was looking forward to taking on Woods again. It's exciting to play against Tiger in this format. We've played together many times in regular four-day Tour events, but it's different when it's just the two of us in an 18-hole battle, said McIlroy, 24.Everyone knows he's hugely competitive each time he steps on the golf course, so I know he'll want to beat me, just as I'll be very keen to beat him again. The crowds we had last year were incredible. I had never seen so many people following one match and I'm sure we'll have more of the same this year. The support is testimony to the growing strength of golf in China and I'm looking forward to getting back there.Event organiser Infinite Ideas International said several leading Chinese golf clubs were interested in holding this year's show and the venue will be announced soon.
Matteo Trentin wins stage 14 of Tour de France Posted: LYON, France (AP) - Italian cyclist Matteo Trentin timed his finish perfectly to win the hilly 14th stage of the Tour de France, while Chris Froome preserved his overall lead by staying in the pack on Saturday.Froome and the other main contenders were more than seven minutes back when Trentin crossed the line in Lyon to become the first Italian to win a stage on this year's Tour.I survived all the climbs and made a good sprint, Trentin said. I knew that if I started from 200 meters I could win.As they contested the sprint outside Stade Gerland, home to seven-time French league champion Lyon, Trentin was near the back but surged forward to beat Swiss rider Michael Albasini by half a wheel. American Andrew Talansky was third. It was the second straight stage win and third from the last four for the Omega Pharma QuickStep team after Mark Cavendish won on Friday and Tony Martin clinched Wednesday's time trial. To be part of this team is incredible, Trentin said. When I won the stage all my teammates came to say 'Congratulations.' It's super nice. The first three were followed 7 minutes, 17 seconds later by the heaving mass of riders in the peloton, with Froome's Sky and Alberto Contador's Saxo-Tinkoff teams forming a shield around their star riders. My teammates controlled the stage and did a great job, Froome said. Just keeping an eye on things.Froome, the Tour favorite, lost more than a minute to both Contador, the two-time former champion, and Dutchman Bauke Mollema in Friday's incident-packed sprint stage. This time, he stayed well out of trouble over the 191-kilometer (119-mile) leg from the winemaking town of Saint-Pourcain-sur-Sioule in central France to the east-central city of Lyon, one of the gourmet capitals of France.Froome remains 2:28 ahead of Mollema, considered an outsider, and 2:45 clear of Contador, the 2007 and '09 champion who was stripped of his 2010 title for doping. An 18-man breakaway set off early, with Jens Voigt, Jan Bakelants and British rider David Millar driving it hard to get Garmin-Sharp teammate Talansky the group's highest-placed rider in the general classification in a good position.Voigt's first Tour was in 1998 and Saturday's was his 303rd day of racing in the showcase race in his 16th Tour. The yellow jersey group was about five minutes behind when the front-runners had all completed the second category 3 climb. Those two were the biggest ones of the day but only moderate ascents compared to what awaits the riders on Sunday's enormous 21-kilometer climb up Mont Ventoux.I'm concentrating on the GC (overall classification) but of course it would be great to win tomorrow. In cycling terms it would be like a dream come true, Froome said. A lot of people have reason to attack now. A lot of people spent energy in the last couple of days, so it will be an interesting one.He saved his legs for Sunday, which is Bastille Day. Judging by the thousands of people who turned out on the roadside to cheer on Saturday, the atmosphere up Ventoux promises to be electric.Froome's Sky teammates have clearly struggled in two stages so far the second one in the Pyrenees in stage 9 and Friday's flat stage and he needs them to be at their best to repel any attacks from Contador on Ventoux.
Clarke insists Australia can stage Ashes escape Posted: NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarke said his side had it in them to complete one of the great Ashes comebacks after England ended the fourth day of the first Test poised for victory. The tourists were 174 for six at Trent Bridge come Saturday's close, still needing a further 137 runs on Sunday's final day with just four wickets standing to go 1-0 up in this five-match series against Ashes-holders England.Shortly before stumps, Australia lost three wickets for three runs with Clarke's exit for 23 sparking the slump. However, teenage debutant Ashton Agar was still there on one not out after being promoted from last man to No 8 following his first innings 98 -- the highest score by a Test No 11.Ashton showed in the first innings he's got plenty of talent and with the experience of Brad Haddin (11 not out) and the other players that are left to bat, I think we can give it a real shake, said Clarke.Clarke is just one of three survivors, along with England's Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell, from the celebrated 2005 Ashes Test at Edgbaston when Australia, who ended the third day on 175 for eight chasing 282, got within a hit of victory before England squeezed home by two runs. We're still a fair way away but I think the way we've seen the roller coaster of Test cricket go up and down for the past four days, anything is possible on Sudnay, Clarke said. This match, as well as producing some enthralling cricket, has also been bedevilled by several umpiring controversies. The latest concerned Clarke's exit on Saturday when, after the third umpire confirmed he'd been caught cleanly by wicketkeeper Matt Prior off Stuart Broad, the star batsman still called for a review.Hot Spot technology indicated Clarke had nicked the ball and his move meant Australia had used up all their reviews -- something that could yet prove costly on Sunday.I knew I had hit my pad. I asked my partner (Steven Smith) and he certainly wasn't convinced I hit it either so I referred it, said Clarke. Then I was given out and had another look when I came in the change room and there was a little spot there on Hot Spot. That's how the review system operates. There was a major flash point Friday when Broad, on 37, got a huge edge off 19-year-old left-arm spinner Agar that was caught by Clarke at slip. However, experienced Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar gave Broad not out and, as Australia had used up their reviews, the tourists had to accept the decision.Broad went on to make 65 and helped Bell, who struck a masterful 109, add a potentially match-turning 138 for the seventh wicket. We would've liked him out for a lot less that's for sure, but that's the way the game goes, said Clarke. I'm not going to go back there. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't.Prior to this match, England had never lost a Test in which Bell had scored a hundred and the 31-year-old's 18th century in 89 fixtures at this level certainly put them in the box seat.I think it's certainly my best Ashes innings, said Bell. It was nice to put an innings together when the team needed it most. However, he added: I've played too much Ashes cricket to take anything for granted.Memories of Edgbaston 2005 were still vivid for Warwickshire right-hander Bell, who said: It was my home ground, a game I'll never forget but hopefully it doesn't get that tight tomorrow.
Gilchrist slams fake Twitter over Broad blast Posted: NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Adam Gilchrist said Saturday comments attributed to him regarding Stuart Broad's controversial decision not to walk during the ongoing first Ashes Test were the work of a fake Twitter account. It has come to my attention that a fake Twitter account in my name has been making comments regarding the Stuart Broad catch in the first Test, said Australia great Gilchrist in a statement issued to AFP and other news organisations.I am concerned that some overseas media organisations have attributed these quotes to me, added the former Test wicketkeeper, who retired from international duty in 2008.Some of these fake Twitter posts may have serious legal consequences, Gilchrist said. While I understand the value of social media I am not on Twitter and have made no comments regarding the Stuart Broad incident.England's Broad had made 37 on Friday when he edged teenage debutant spinner Ashton Agar to Australia captain Michael Clarke at first slip.Australia appealed for the catch but Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar ruled in the batsman's favour as Broad stood his ground. As Australia had by that stage used up both their reviews, there was no way for them to overturn Dar's decision even though replays showed a thick edge had deflected off wicketkeeper Brad Haddin's gloves to Clarke.Broad's decision to stay put reopened the whole debate about 'walking', the practice where batsmen who know they've hit the ball give themselves out without waiting for the umpire's verdict, with West Indies legend Michael Holding saying he should be banned for an act contrary to the spirit of the game.Traditionally, Australians have always waited for the umpire's decision but Gilchrist, bucking the trend, was a noted walker during his career. The comments attributed to the 41-year-old on Friday slammed Broad's conduct, with the Twitter post saying: Some people saying, you rely on the umpire. No you don't, you rely on honesty. Disappointed by the Poms today, if you're out -- you walk. However, in his statement Saturday, Gilchrist insisted walking was a choice for individual players and that he'd no issues with Broad's conduct. Those who followed my career will be well aware of my personal views on the matter of walking and that's what they are, my personal views, Gilchrist said.I had my go and I am now content to sit back and watch the current generation play the game in whatever manner they are comfortable with.Gilchrist in fact launched his own Twitter feed to plead with the imposter to shut the fake account.AdamCGilchrist this is Adam Gilchrist here. Stop pretending to be me. I know you say 'parody' on your profile but now its (sic) gone too far, Gilchrist tweeted in the first of three separate posts.Press are now reporting your fake quotes to me. Hence legal action is underway.I have never been on twitter and only now to try and stop you. Show some respect, enough now.Broad eventually went on to make 65 on Saturday and helped Ian Bell (109) add 138 for the seventh wicket as Ashes-holders England set Australia a daunting target of 311 to win the first of this five-Test series. At stumps Australia were 174 for six, still needing a further 137 runs for victory on Sunday's final day.

Australia 174-6 in 1st test vs England, needs 311 Posted: NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) - Englands bowlers reduced Australia to 174-6 at stumps on day four of the first test at Trent Bridge, after a pulsating Saturday evening session which left the tourists needing another 137 for victory.England claimed four wickets after tea, including opener Chris Rogers, who was Australias top scorer with a 121-ball 52 that included eight fours.Stuart Broad took 2-34 and Graeme Swann 2-64, leaving Brad Haddin and Ashton Agar not out on 11 and 1 respectively. Agar was promoted up the order from No. 11 after his first innings 98 and, while he was happy to bat through to stumps with Haddin, Australia is the underdog going into the final day.To win, Australia will have to break the record at Nottingham for a successful fourth innings test run chase, set by England who scored 284 against New Zealand in 2004.Earlier, England posted 375 after Ian Bell hit 109 and Broad 65.England resumed on 326-6 and Bell, who was 95 not out overnight, made his 18th test century with an innings of 267 balls and 15 fours.Broad hit 65 from 148 balls with seven fours before James Pattinson had him caught behind, ending a stand of 138 that tilted the match Englands way.Bell was also caught behind off Mitchell Starc, who had Australias best bowling figures with 3-81. Peter Siddle took 3-82. The tone was set from the first ball, when Starc bowled an astonishing head-high beamer that flew through the vacant second slip area for five no balls.Broad, who controversially stood his ground and was given not out on Friday despite clearly being caught by Michael Clarke off Ashton Agar, reached his 10th test 50 in the second over of the day by slicing Pattinson at catchable height through first and second slip.In the next over, Bell drove Starc through point to bring up his century and the partnership was broken only in the 140th over, when Haddin took a tumbling catch to remove Broad. This time Broad walked and he was given a standing ovation by the majority of the crowd and his teammates on the dressing room balcony.Successive boundaries for Bell from Siddle took the England lead past 300 before he finally fell to Starc in the 145th.Graeme Swann was out for 9 edging Siddle to Clarke and the innings concluded when James Anderson was caught by Phillip Hughes off Siddle without scoring. The Australian openers initially made batting look easy but after an hour of the afternoon session Watson was lbw to Broad after an unsuccessful referral.Rogers successfully referred a catch behind off Swann and reached his 50 with a single from Root in the final over before tea.The momentum seemed to be shifting back to Australia at 111-1, but with the final ball of the session Root had Cowan caughtRogers perished in the 23rd over when he got a leading edge to Anderson and was caught by Bell.Clarke and Steve Smith were building a useful partnership but the momentum shifted again when Clarke was given out caught behind to Broad after an umpires review.Clarke insisted he hadnt hit the ball and referred the call but the hotspot camera revealed the faintest nick and he was out for 23, the snickometer later revealed a noise as the ball passed Clarkes bat.Smith was lbw to the next ball from Swann for 17 and England then demonstrated how the referral system should be used when they overturned a not out decision against Phillip Hughes, who was lbw to Swann.
