TTP rejects reports of Taliban cell in Syria Posted: ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has denied reports regarding the presence of Pakistani Taliban militants in Syria.Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Azaz Ahmed Chaudhry also clarified that Pakistan would never like to see terrorist elements traveling abroad and taking part in any insurgency through terrorist activities. “Pakistani officials will never allow them to do so,” he added. It is pertinent to mention that a Pakistani Taliban commander told BBC on Friday that the cell to monitor the jihad in Syria was set up six months ago.He said that the cell has the approval of militant factions both within and outside of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella organisation of militant groups fighting the Pakistani forces. The cell sends information and feedback on the conflict in Syria back to Pakistan, he said,They were facilitated by our friends in Syria who have previously been fighting in Afghanistan, Mr Amin said.Their job is to assess the needs of the Jihad in Syria, and to work out joint operations with our Syrian friends.
Newborn pandas split time between mom, zoo nursery Posted: ATLANTA (AP) - Two giant panda cubs are being rotated between their mother and an incubator to ensure the newborn twins are properly fed and receive equal doses of maternal nurturing, officials at an Atlanta zoo said Tuesday.A 15-year-old giant panda named Lun Lun gave birth to the cubs Monday evening at Zoo Atlanta. An ultrasound confirmed Lun Luns pregnancy in June, but officials say they were unaware she was having twins until the second cub emerged minutes after the first. It was a surprise to us but not a shock to us that she had twins. Lun (Lun) did not really comply with the ultrasound all that well. This pregnancy she slept most of the time, said Zoo Atlantas deputy director, Dwight Lawson. He said the mothers long bouts of sleep during pregnancy didnt leave veterinarians much time to check her thoroughly via ultrasound.Lun Lun was artificially inseminated in March and has been under 24-hour observation by a camera providing a live Internet video feed from her den. The father is another giant panda at the zoo, Yang Yang. The cubs are the first giant panda twins to be born in the U.S. since 1987. Each came into the world hairless and taking on a pinkish color. Lawson said one weighed about 3.5 ounces (100 grams) at birth and the other just over 5 ounces (140 grams).Lawson said both cubs appear healthy, but zookeepers are taking precautions because of a high mortality rate among panda cubs. The cubs are tiny, undeveloped and able to nearly fit in the palm of a hand. They were born with their eyes closed like many mammals, and theyre unable to regulate their own body temperature. Zookeepers say rotating the cubs between incubator and the mother is a key step in their survival.Theyre doing well, the trick with panda twins is that the female typically only cares for one and abandons the other. Thats normal, theyre just not able to raise twins on their own, Lawson said.Rebecca Snyder, curator of mammals, said in a statement released by the zoo that Lun Lun is a good mom, but is reluctant to give up whichever cub she has at any time.We have not been able to swap the cubs as frequently as we would like. Because of that, both have been supplemented with some formula. Both are doing well with this, she added.Snyder said the first days are critical and will guide the actions of the caretakers. Zookeepers note that the last twin pandas born in the U.S. in 1987 died, adding twin births raise the likelihood of complications. The twin cubs are Lun Luns fourth and fifth children.Hines said Lun Luns 15-year-old partner, Yang Yang and the cubs older brothers, Xi Lan, 4, and Po, 2, remain on exhibit, and will not be housed with Lun Lun or the cubs for the time being. A third sibling, Mei Lan, 6, was sent back to China in 2010.Basically, they all go back just prior to reaching sexual maturity so they can be part of the larger breeding pool in China, Lawson said. The giant panda research program began at Zoo Atlanta in March of 1997 in partnership with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.Zoo officials said their Chinese counterparts were in Atlanta this week to help care for the newborn cubs. The method of switching twin cubs between the mother and an incubator was developed by researchers from Chengdu, and has been successful in China, where zoo officials say twin giant panda cub births are more common.Less than 1,600 giant pandas are said to be living in the wild and most are known to live in mountainous regions of China. Zoo Atlanta was given an International Conservation Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2012 for its work to preserve the species. The cubs wont be named until they are 100 days old in keeping with a Chinese tradition, Lawson said. Zoo Atlanta officials said theyll likely learn the gender of the cubs in the coming week.If the panda cubs survive, theyre expected to be open to visits from the public this fall.
Microsoft asks Holder to ease gag on NSA programme Posted: REDMOND, Washington (AP) - Microsoft has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder calling on him to personally review a gag order that prevents the company and others from further discussing the secret national security requests for customer emails, Skype calls and documents stored on its servers. The letter follows Microsofts motion in a secret court last month asking for permission to break out which requests were from law enforcement officials and which were from the National Security Agency. It hasnt received a response.A spokesman for the attorney general says the office is reviewing the letter, which was sent by Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday.
Egypt Cabinet has women, Christians; no Islamists Posted: CAIRO (AP) - Egypts interim leader swore in a Cabinet on Tuesday that included women and Christians but no Islamists as the military-backed administration moved swiftly to formalize the new political order and present a more liberal face that is markedly at odds with the deposed president and his supporters. The changes came at a time of deep polarization and violence in Egypt, including new clashes that killed seven people as part of the continuing bloodshed that has marked the days following the armed forces coup that swept President Mohammed Morsi from office and cracked down on the Muslim Brotherhood.Egypts military already wields great influence behind the scenes, and the army chief, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who ousted Morsi on July 3, was given a promotion in the Cabinet. He became a first deputy prime minister in addition to keeping his post as defense minister. For most of the two years since the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, the country has been split into two camps, one led by Morsi, his Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist allies, and another led by secular Egyptians, liberals, Christians and moderate Muslims. The fault lines remain, except that the Islamist camp is no longer in power. It does not include members of any Islamist parties, a sign of the enduring division that follows the removal of Morsi, Egypts first freely elected president. The interim presidents spokesman had earlier said posts would be offered to the Muslim Brotherhood, but the group promptly refused, saying it would not take part in the military-backed political process and would continue protests until the legitimately elected Morsi is reinstated. We refuse to even discuss it, a senior official of the Muslim Brotherhoods political arm, the Freedom and Justice party, told The Associated Press. What is built on illegitimacy is illegal, he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media before the party issued a formal statement on the formation of the Cabinet. The only Islamist party that supported Morsis ouster, the ultraconservative Salafi el-Nour party, was not represented and criticized the leadership as biased, lacking inclusion and repeating the same mistake the last government was blamed for.U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said he had talked with el-Sissi about 10 times in the past week. We have encouraged publicly and privately the leaders of Egypt, including the interim president, the interim vice president, and the prime minister in particular, to be inclusive, to bring all political parties in, to allow them to participate in the writing of the constitution and the elections, Hagel told reporters in Florida. Thats the only way it will work. Weve been very clear on that.Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi, an economist in his 70s, leads the government of 33 other ministers. Sworn in by interim President Adly Mansour, it reflected the largely liberal, secular bent of the factions who brought millions into the streets at the end of June calling for Morsi to step down and backed el-Sissis removal of the president.Women have a somewhat higher profile in the government, with three ministries including the powerful information and health ministries. Most past governments for decades have had at most only two women. The Cabinet also includes three Christians, including one of the three women, Environment Minister Laila Rashed Iskander. That is also a first, since successive governments had no more than one or two Christians.Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, appointed by Morsi, remains in his post, which oversees the police. Nabil Fahmy, who was Egypts ambassador to the U.S. from 1999-2008 and a nuclear disarmament expert, becomes foreign minister. In a nod to the revolutionary youth groups that engineered the 2011 uprising and this years massive protests, Mansour renamed the Justice portfolio the Transitional Justice and National Reconciliation Ministry and gave it to Mohammed el-Mahdi, a career judge. The groups have been campaigning to bring to justice those responsible for the killings of hundreds of protesters since Mubaraks fall. Reconciliation is a longstanding demand by most political forces to end Egypts polarization, which often spills over into street violence. At least three senior figures from the National Salvation Front, the main opposition group during Morsis year in office, were included in the government. In addition, the new deputy prime minister in charge of international cooperation, Ziad Bahaa-Eldin, is a member of the Social Democratic Party, which is part of the Salvation Front.Mohamed ElBaradei, one of the Fronts top leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has already been installed as Mansours vice president. In a first, Mansour also swore in a leading figure in Egyptian soccer as sports minister. Midfielder Taher Abu Zeid starred in Cairos el-Ahly club and the national team in the 1980s. He was a member of the national squad that won the African Nations Cup in 1986.The Cabinet is to run the country during a transition period announced last week by Mansour. The plan includes the formation of panels to amend the Islamist-drafted constitution that was passed under Morsi, then elections for a new parliament and president early next year. After the swearing-in ceremony, the Cabinet held its first meeting and set the governments priorities as reviving the economy, bolstering public security and improving services, according to a palace statement.
Chrysler to roll out all-new midsize car next year Posted: STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan (AP) - Chrysler will start selling a completely new midsize car during the first quarter of next year, company executives confirmed on Tuesday. The replacement for the aging Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger is badly needed for the company to compete with the likes of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in the most popular part of the U.S. auto market.Chrysler officials gave few details about the new car. It will be built at a factory in Sterling Heights, north of Detroit, where the 200 and Avenger are now built. The officials confirmed the timing of the car Tuesday while taking reporters on a tour of the factory's new paint shop.Chrysler's current midsize cars were unveiled in 2006 and updated three years ago. Their designs are the oldest in the midsize car market, and buyers pay far less for them than nearly all competitors. The 200 and Avenger generally are noisier, get lower gas mileage and have worse rides than the competition, a bad combination in the hotly contested market. The new car likely will be built with components jointly designed with Italian automaker Fiat SpA, which owns a majority stake in Chrysler.Through June, Chrysler has sold just 136,000 200s and Avengers combined. While sales are up over last year, they're far below the top-selling cars in the midsize segment. For instance, Toyota sold almost 208,000 Camrys through June, while Honda sold 187,000 Accords. Crosstown rival Ford sold 161,000 Fusions and had to open a second factory to build them because of rising sales. The new 898,000-square-foot (83,426-sq. meter) paint shop in Sterling Heights is about 85 percent complete. When finished, it will be able to paint any Chrysler or Fiat vehicle except for big pickup trucks and large commercial vans, said John Powell, senior manager of the shop. The plant also is getting a new $165 million body shop. The paint shop, along with upgrades to two nearby metal stamping plants, cost $850 million. It's scheduled to open early next year. The investment is good news for the factory's roughly 2,600 employees. The plant was slated to be closed in 2009 when Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy protection but was saved when demand for midsize cars increased.
Obama says bill must resolve immigrants' status Posted: WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is suggesting he would not sign an immigration bill without a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.Obama tells the Spanish-language television network Telemundo that, quote, it does not make sense to me.Obama says the effort to finally fix the system must resolve the status of these immigrants or the U.S. will end up with two classes of people: full citizens and those permanently resigned to a lower status.A comprehensive bill passed by the Senate would allow these immigrants to eventually become citizens. Many House Republicans are against that.Obama also says the House will probably pass a bill in the autumn. He had pressed to have a bill to sign before the August congressional recess.
Ford to recalibrate hybrids, improve fuel economy Posted: DETROIT (AP) - Ford Motor Co. is offering free upgrades to U.S. and Canadian hybrid customers to improve their fuel economy. The company plans to recalibrate the vehicle control systems on 77,000 Ford C-Max and Fusion hybrids and Lincoln MKZ hybrids from the 2013 model year. Some customers have complained that the cars aren't getting the 47 mile-per-gallon (20 kilometers per liter) fuel economy promised in Ford's advertising.Ford will increase the maximum speed the cars can be driven in electric mode from 62 mph to 85 miles per hour (100 kph to 137 kph). It also plans to make better use of the grille shutters, which improve aerodynamics; reduce the electric fan speed; shorten the engine warm-up time and minimize use of the air conditioning compressor.
Clinton urges Puerto Rico to lessen oil dependence Posted: SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton urged Puerto Rico to develop a renewable energy strategy and help lead the Caribbean in becoming less dependent on petroleum during a forum Tuesday in the U.S. territory.Clinton said the island has the resources necessary to launch various clean energy projects that would also help drive down power bills, which are about twice that of the U.S. mainland on average. In the Caribbean you find, unbelievably, the highest electric rates in the world on average, said Clinton, who established the Clinton Foundation to target initiatives ranging from those that fight climate change and AIDS to those that support small businesses. He also warned the region would be one of the first hit by climate change effects. The way we produce and consume energy cannot be maintained without severe, adverse consequences, he said. There is no question that the climate is changing at an unsustainable rate.Puerto Rico depends on petroleum to generate nearly 70 percent of its power, but the government in recent years has unveiled several renewable energy projects in a push to drive down costs and cut greenhouse emissions.Last year, officials unveiled the Caribbeans largest solar farm in the southern coastal town of Guayama. The $96 million project features more than 100,000 photovoltaic panels that can power some 6,500 homes a year. The project began operating in October and was built by AES Solar, a company based in Arlington, Virginia. The Caribbeans largest wind farm also began operating last year in the southern coastal town of Santa Isabel. The $200 million farm features 44 turbines that can produce up to 95 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power some 30,000 homes a year. It was built by San Francisco-based Pattern Energy. In April, Gestamp Wind, a division of the Spanish Gestamp Renewables, unveiled a $90 million wind farm in the southeast town of Naguabo that features 13 turbines that can power 9,000 homes a year.Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said he aims to lessen Puerto Ricos oil dependence to 40 percent in five years by turning to natural gas. Were aware this plan requires a profound transformation in the way we produce, seek, distribute and consume energy, he said.Clinton urged Garcia to also consider installing solar panels on buildings given the number of flat roofs that exist across the island. He said the territory also could help bolster its economy by manufacturing solar panels for customers in the Caribbean. He pledged involvement of the Clinton Foundation.Department of Natural Resources Secretary Carmen Guerrero said that a University of Puerto Rico study found the island has enough rooftops to meet all its energy demands through solar panels. We have plenty of sun, wind, ocean, she said. Yet we are almost 100 percent dependent on nonrenewable energy sources. The islands current clean energy projects feed the state-owned Electric Energy Authority, which is mired in debt and has struggled with its own internal turmoil in recent years. Most of the projects were launched under the administration of former Gov. Luis Fortuno, which sought to generate 12 percent of Puerto Ricos power from clean energy by 2015, 15 percent by 2020 and 20 percent by 2035.Fortuno also had sought to build a 92-mile (148-kilometer) pipeline that environmentalists long protested given that it would cross through fragile ecosystems and archaeological sites. Fortuno said the pipeline would have saved $1 billion a year and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 64 percent, but his administration withdrew plans for the project last year after investing more than $50 million in it.Garcia has said he seeks to produce 250 megawatts through clean energy by 2014, requiring $500 million in investment that could generate some 500 jobs. He also said he expects to use natural gas to increase power production from 15 to 50 percent by 2015, and to 70 percent by 2017 without the use of a gas pipeline.Among the new projects launched is a $30 million solar panel installation at the islands main convention center that would produce 5 megawatts an hour for a total of $20.7 million in savings, Garcia said.Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, however, noted that the large majority of Puerto Ricos renewable energy projects have not been completed.

Iraq and Syrian conflicts are merging: UN envoy Posted: UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. envoy to Iraq is warning that the violence in Iraq can no longer be separated from the civil war in neighboring Syria because the battlefields are merging.Martin Kobler told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that Iraqi armed groups have an increasingly active presence in Syria. As a result, he said, the Syrian conflict isnt just spilling over into Iraq.Instead, the conflict has spread to Iraq, as Iraqis are reportedly taking arms against each other in Syria, and in Iraq, Kobler said.He warned that the violence could easily spiral out of control if not urgently addressed.Kobler said the last four months have been among the bloodiest in Iraq in the last five years with nearly 3,000 people killed and over 7,000 injured.
Panama finds suspected weapons on N. Korean ship Posted: PANAMA CITY (AP) - A North Korean ship carrying weapons system parts buried under sacks of sugar was seized as it tried to cross the Panama Canal on its way from Cuba to its home country, which is barred by United Nations sanctions from importing sophisticated weapons or missiles, Panamanian officials said Tuesday.A private defense analysis firm that examined a photograph of the find said the ship appeared to be transporting a radar-control system for a Soviet-era surface-to-air missile system, and Cuba later released a statement calling the equipment on the boat obsolete defensive weapons from the mid-20th century.A statement from Cubas Foreign Ministry acknowledged that the military equipment belonged to the Caribbean nation, but said it had been shipped out to be repaired and returned to the island. It said the 240 metric tons of weaponry consisted of two Volga and Pechora anti-aircraft missile systems, nine missiles in parts and spares, two Mig-21 Bis and 15 engines for those airplanes. The agreements subscribed by Cuba in this field are supported by the need to maintain our defensive capacity in order to preserve national sovereignty, the statement read. It concluded by saying that Havana remains unwavering in its commitment to international law, peace and nuclear disarmament.Earlier, Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said the ship identified as the 14,000-ton Chong Chon Gang was carrying missiles and other arms hidden in containers underneath the cargo of sugar.Martinelli tweeted a photo showing a green tube that appears to be a horizontal antenna for the SNR-75 Fan Song radar, which used to guide missiles fired by the SA-2 air-defense system found in former Warsaw Pact and Soviet-allied nations, said Neil Ashdown, an analyst for IHS Janes Intelligence. It is possible that this could be being sent to North Korea to update its high-altitude air-defense capabilities, Ashdown said. Janes also said the equipment could be headed to North Korea to be upgraded.Panamanian authorities said one container buried under sugar sacks contained radar equipment that appears to be designed for use with air-to-air or surface-to-air missiles, said Belsio Gonzalez, director of Panamas National Aeronautics and Ocean Administration. An Associated Press journalist who gained access to the rusting ship saw green shipping containers that had been covered by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of white sacks marked Cuban Raw Sugar. The U.N. Security Council has imposed four rounds of increasingly tougher sanctions against North Korea since its first nuclear test on Oct. 9, 2006.Under current sanctions, all U.N. member states are prohibited from directly or indirectly supplying, selling or transferring all arms, missiles or missile systems and the equipment and technology to make them to North Korea, with the exception of small arms and light weapons. The most recent resolution, approved in March after Pyongyangs latest nuclear test, authorizes all countries to inspect cargo in or transiting through their territory that originated in North Korea, or is destined to North Korea if a state has credible information the cargo could violate Security Council resolutions.Panama obviously has an important responsibility to ensure that the Panama Canal is utilized for safe and legal commerce, said Acting U.S. Ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo, who is the current Security Council president. Shipments of arms or related material to or from Korea would violate Security Council resolutions, three of them as a matter of fact.Panamanian authorities believe the ship was returning from Havana on its way to North Korea, Panamanian Public Security Minister Jose Raul Mulino told The Associated Press. Based on unspecified intelligence, authorities suspected it could be carrying contraband and tried to communicate with the crew, who didnt respond. Martinelli said Panama originally suspected drugs could be aboard. The 35 North Koreans on the boat were arrested after resisting police efforts to intercept the ship in Panamanian waters on Thursday as it moved toward the canal and take it to the Caribbean port of Manzanillo, Martinelli told private RPC radio station. The captain had a heart attack and also tried to commit suicide during the operation, Martinelli said.Panamanian officials were finally able to board the ship to begin searching it Monday, pulling out hundreds of sacks of sugar.Luis Eduardo Camacho, a spokesman for Martinelli, said authorities had only searched one of the ships five container sections, and the inspection of all the cargo will take at least a week. Panama has requested help from United Nations inspectors, along with Colombia and the UK, said Javier Carballo, the countrys top narcotics prosecutor.Panama being a neutral country, a country in peace, that doesnt like war, we feel very worried about this military material, Martinelli said.North Koreas government made no public comment on the case.In early July, a top North Korean general, Kim Kyok Sik, visited Cuba and met with his island counterparts. Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma said he was also received by President Raul Castro, and the two had an exchange about the historical ties that unite the two nations and the common will to continue strengthening them. The meetings were held behind closed doors, and there has been no detailed account of their discussions. After this incident there should be renewed focus on North Korean-Cuban links, said Hugh Griffiths, an arms trafficking expert at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Griffiths said his institute told the U.N. this year that it had uncovered evidence of a flight from Cuba to North Korea that travelled via central Africa.Given the history of North Korea, Cuban military cooperation and now this latest seizure, we find this flight more interesting, he said. The Chong Chon Gang has a history of being detained on suspicion of trafficking drugs and ammunition, Griffiths said. Lloyds List Intelligence said the 34-year-old ship, which is registered to the Pyongyang-based Chongchongang Shipping Company, has a long history of detentions for safety deficiencies and other undeclared reasons.Satellite tracking records show it left the Pacific Coast of Russia on April 12 with a stated destination of Havana, then crossed the Pacific and the Panama Canal on its way to the Caribbean. It disappeared from satellite tracking until it showed up again on the Caribbean side of the canal, on July 10, Lloyds said. The disappearance from satellite tracking indicates that the crew may have switched off a device that automatically transmits the ships location after it moved into the Caribbean, Lloyds said.Mulino, the Panamanian public security minister, said the ship crossed the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean last month carrying a cargo of sheet metal that was inspected by Panamanian authorities.Griffiths said the Chong Chon Gang was stopped in 2010 in the Ukraine and was attacked by pirates 400 miles off the coast of Somalia in 2009.Griffiths institute has also been interested in the ship because of a 2009 stop it made in Tartus, a Syrian port city hosting a Russian naval base.
Egypt's interim cabinet sworn in Posted: CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's first interim government since the military toppled president Mohamed Morsi two weeks ago was sworn in Tuesday, after deadly clashes between the security forces and the deposed Islamist's supporters. The Muslim Brotherhood, the influential movement from which Morsi hails, immediately rejected the 35-member cabinet, with spokesman Gehad El-Haddad telling AFP: We don't recognise its legitimacy or its authority.None of the newly appointed ministers are affiliated to any Islamist party or movement, with the Brotherhood and the ultra-conservative Al-Nur party having both spurned calls for them to participate.Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the general behind the popularly backed coup that overthrew Morsi, was appointed first deputy prime minister and minister of defence in the government headed by liberal economist Hazem al-Beblawi.The swearing in ceremony took place after overnight clashes in the heart of Cairo and in adjacent Giza, in which officials said seven people were killed and 261 wounded. Hundreds of protesters were also arrested. It also came after US envoy Bill Burns -- the most senior American official to visit since the July 3 coup -- appealed for an end to the violence rocking the Arab world's most populous nation. But within hours of his statement, the Egyptian capital was rocked by political violence for the first time since dozens of Morsi supporters were shot dead outside an elite army barracks early last week. Two people died in clashes around the central Ramses area near Tahrir Square, while another five were killed in Giza, emergency services told AFP.A security source cited by state media said 401 protesters were arrested in the Ramses area alone, and at least 17 security personnel were injured.Thousands of Islamists had poured onto the streets after the iftar meal, with which Muslims break their daytime fast during the holy month of Ramadan, to demand the reinstatement of Morsi, who has been in custody since his overthrow. Some of them blocked the October 6 bridge over the Nile in central Cairo, where security forces fired tear gas to drive them back. The protesters responded by hurling rocks at the security forces, triggering fresh volleys of tear gas, with clashes continuing in adjacent Ramses Square and elsewhere late into the night. The United States strongly condemned the violence, with State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell saying it made the transition much more difficult, while insisting Washington was not taking sides.Washington has refrained from saying Morsi was the victim of a coup, which would legally require a freeze on some $1.5 billion in US military and economic assistance to Cairo. The office of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she would travel to Cairo on Wednesday to urge leaders to return to the path of democracy as rapidly as possible.Egypt has been rocked by a wave of deadly attacks since the coup, with the latest deaths bringing to more than 100 the number of people killed, according to an AFP tally of confirmed deaths.Egypt's interim presidency has urged all of the country's political forces, including the Brotherhood, to take part in national reconciliation efforts. But the Brotherhood has refused to play any part in the caretaker government unveiled on Tuesday, which included three women ministers and three Coptic Christians.Analysts underlined the size of the challenges facing the new administration, especially in the face of bitter opposition from Morsi supporters.Egypt's budget deficit, reforming the interior ministry, establishing the rule of law and restoring security in the Sinai peninsula were among the pressing issues for the new government, said analyst Samer Shehata. How to deal with the protesters on the street at the moment is another very serious issue, he added.During his single year of turbulent rule, Morsi was accused of concentrating power in Brotherhood hands, sending the economy into freefall and failing to protect minorities. But the Islamist leader's supporters say his overthrow was an affront to democracy.Egypt's new rulers voiced strong resentment on Tuesday at comments by Turkey's Islamist premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan backing Morsi as the country's only legitimate president. The diplomatic spat came as the authorities tightened the screws on Morsi's backers, freezing the assets of 14 top Islamists, including nine Brotherhood leaders.
Narine, Bravo earn West Indies win over Pakistan Posted: PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Pakistan returned to their self-destructive ways as West Indies completed a 37-run victory in the second One-Day International at the Guyana National Stadium on Tuesday.Solid contributions by the Bravo brothers, Darren and Dwayne, boosted the West Indies batting effort after they had gotten off to the worst possible start when giant left-arm fast bowler Mohammed Irfan had Chris Gayle caught at the wicket in the first over of the day.Two days after demolishing the hosts by 126 runs, the visitors folded for 195 off 47.5 overs in reply to the Caribbean side's total of 232 for eight after they were put in on a pitch expected to offer considerable assistance to the bowlers following the previous day's torrential rain.Pakistan appeared to be cruising along at 103 for two with skipper Misbah-ul-Haq well entrenched and opener Nasir Jamshed (54) riding his considerable luck towards a half-century. But Misbah played a shot totally out of character to be bowled by Darren Sammy, a fitting reward for the all-rounder playing his 100th ODI.That dismissal was followed by a succession of poor shots and with spinner Sunil Narine returning to wicket-taking form in snaring four for 26 to claim the Man of the Match award, a rearguard 50 by wicketkeeper-batsman Umar Akmal proved to be too little, too late for Pakistan. With the series now level, the teams travel on to St Lucia for the remaining three matches, beginning on Friday, before the short tour concludes with two T20 matches in St Vincent on July 27 and 28.Darren Bravo's top score of 54 paced his team through the first half of the innings while skipper Dwayne Bravo provided vital impetus in holding the latter half of the innings together with an unbeaten 43 that proved critical in helping the Caribbean side to a challenging score.Given the nature of the pitch, I thought 230-235 would have been a good total, said a relieved Dwayne Bravo after he completed victory with the last two wickets off consecutive deliveries. We really needed this win to get some confidence back and we can't forget the fans, because they are the ones who suffer the most when we play as badly as we did last Sunday.Shahid Afridi, the undoubted star of that opening encounter, claimed two wickets, as did Saeed Ajmal, the pair of slow bowlers threatening to stifle the home team as they did so effectively two days earlier. Afridi could not replicate his heroics with the bat however, one wild swing too many bringing about his demise via a stumping.Darren Bravo and Johnson Charles (31) counter-attacked either side of a break before rain following Gayle's swift demise, the pair putting on 79 runs for the second wicket. The runs then dried up during the middle of the innings with Bravo and Marlon Samuels struggling to get the ball away.It took the arrival of the batting powerplay to change the complexion of the innings as wickets fell in a rush, only for Kieron Pollard (30) to finally provide some stability and acceleration with his captain, the pair taking the West Indies from the uncertainty of 150 for five in the 39th over to 220 when Pollard was bowled by Asad Ali in the penultimate over. Our bowlers didn't use the moisture in the pitch well, said Misbah in the aftermath of defeat. The pitch then got slower and lower so it made life really difficult for us when we batted. We didn't help our cause by some bad shots.Conditions are expected to be more batsman friendly when battle is resumed at the Beausejour Stadium in what is effectively now a best-of-three contest.
