Iraq: 3 attacks kill 25, some anti-Al-Qaeda forces

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - Three attacks north of Baghdad Monday killed 25 people, including members of a Sunni militia that fights al-Qaida, officials said, in the latest of a growing surge of insurgent strikes that are plaguing Iraq. The first attack illustrated that while Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence is in a dangerous upswing, there are other forces at play as well. Eight Sunni Muslim militiamen were snatched from their houses in the town of Mishahda and surrounding villages during the past two days and then killed, a police officer said. He said their bodies were left in an orchard on Monday with gunshot wounds. Some had their hands bound behind their backs. The government-allied militiamen, or Sahwa, joined with U.S. troops to fight al-Qaida before the U.S. pullout in late 2011. Since then, they have been a frequent target for al-Qaida in Iraq, which considers them traitors. The town where the abductions took place, a former insurgent stronghold, is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the capital.Sectarian violence also erupted Monday.Shortly after sunset, a suicide bomber set off his explosive belt inside a Shiite mosque where a funeral was taking place, killing nine people and wounding 40 others. The attack took place in the town of Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Al-Qaida in Iraq frequently deploys car bombs and suicide bombers, often targeting Shiites and security forces.Later, police a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a cafe in the restive city of Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing eight people and wounding 20 others.Health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information to reporters. Also Monday, the United Nations mission to Iraq said last months violence claimed the lives of 761 Iraqis and wounded 1,771 others. The statement said Baghdad province had the most casualties, with 258 people killed and 692 injured. It was followed by Salahuddin, Ninevah, Diyala and Anbar provinces in central and northern Iraq.Violence increased sharply in April and May, with frequent bombings in civilian areas raising concerns that a widespread sectarian conflict might once again break out in Iraq. The bloodshed accelerated after a deadly April 23 crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest in the northern town of Hawija against the Shiite-led government.

Obama suggests spying on nations' allies is common

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama brushed aside sharp European criticism on Monday, suggesting that all nations spy on each other as the French and Germans expressed outrage over alleged U.S. eavesdropping on European Union diplomats. American analyst-turned-leaker Edward Snowden, believed to still be at Moscows international airport, applied for political asylum to remain in Russia.Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a statement he acknowledged sounded odd, told reporters in Moscow that Snowden would have to stop leaking U.S. secrets if he wanted asylum in Russia and he added that Snowden seemed unwilling to stop publishing leaks of classified material. At the same time, Putin said that he had no plans to turn over Snowden to the United States.Obama, in an African news conference with Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, said the U.S. would provide allies with information about new reports that the National Security Agency had bugged EU offices in Washington, New York and Brussels. But he also suggested such activity by governments would hardly be unusual. We should stipulate that every intelligence service not just ours, but every European intelligence service, every Asian intelligence service, wherever theres an intelligence service heres one thing that theyre going to be doing: Theyre going to be trying to understand the world better, and whats going on in world capitals around the world, he said. If that werent the case, then thered be no use for an intelligence service. The latest issue concerns allegations of U.S. spying on European officials in the German news weekly Der Spiegel. French President Francois Hollande on Monday demanded that the U.S. immediately stop any such eavesdropping and suggested the widening controversy could jeopardize next weeks opening of trans-Atlantic trade talks between the United States and Europe. We cannot accept this kind of behavior from partners and allies, Hollande said on French television.German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters in Berlin, Eavesdropping on friends is unacceptable. He declared, Were not in the Cold War anymore.Even before the latest disclosures, talks at the upcoming free-trade sessions were expected to be fragile, with disagreements surfacing over which items should be covered or excluded from an agreement. The United States has said there should be no exceptions. But France has called for exempting certain cultural products, and other Europeans do not appear eager to give up longtime agricultural subsidies.Obama said the Europeans are some of the closest allies that we have in the world. But he added, I guarantee you that in European capitals, there are people who are interested in, if not what I had for breakfast, at least what my talking points might be should I end up meeting with their leaders.Thats how intelligence services operate.Nonetheless, Obama said hed told his advisers to evaluate everything thats being claimed and promised to share the results with allies.

Report: Snowden has asked for asylum in Russia

MOSCOW (AP) - The Interfax news agency says a Russian consular official has confirmed that National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden asked for political asylum in Russia.Interfax cited Kim Shevchenko, the duty officer at the Russian Foreign Ministrys consular office in Moscows Sheremetyevo airport, as saying that Snowdens representative, Sarah Harrison, handed over his request Sunday.Snowden has been caught in legal limbo in the transit zone of Moscows Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23. The U.S. has annulled his passport, and Ecuador, where he has hoped to get asylum, has been coy about offering him shelter.Russias President Vladimir Putin says Snowden will have to stop leaking U.S. secrets if he wants to get asylum in Russia, but adds that Snowden has no plan to quit doing so.

Kerry presses North Korea over nuke disarmament

Posted:

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (AP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry stepped up pressure Monday on North Korea to give up its atomic weapons program, saying key regional powers, including Pyongyang ally China, are all absolutely united in demanding nuclear disarmament.Kerry made the comments on the eve of Asias largest annual security conference, the 27-country Association of Southeast Asian Nation Regional Forum, which includes top diplomats from the U.S., North Korea and four other nations involved in long-dormant nuclear disarmament talks.North Koreas nuclear ambitions are expected to dominate the security forum along with other issues such as South China Sea disputes.Tension on the Korean Peninsula had spiked earlier this year after North Korea conducted its third nuclear test and issued a torrent of threats to attack the U.S. and South Korea in anger over toughened U.N. sanctions over the underground atomic blast. The country recently ratcheted down the rhetoric and offered to talk with its rivals but still has repeatedly vowed to expand its nuclear arsenal in the face of what it calls U.S. hostility.China, North Koreas longstanding ally and main aid provider, has showed signs of frustration with its neighbor by supporting U.N. sanctions and cracking down on North Korean banking activity. After meeting with his Chinese, South Korean and Japanese counterparts, Kerry told reporters Monday that I want to emphasize ... all four of us are absolutely united and absolutely firm in our insistence that the future with respect to North Korea must include denuclearization.China made clear to me they have made very firm statements and very firm steps that they have taken with respect to the implementation of that policy, he said.We confirmed that there is a better path open to North Korea, Kerry said. And we want North Korea to understand that the region will be better with the denuclearization and the possibilities of normal relationships not just between the South and the North, or China and North Korea, but between the United States and North Korea and the rest of the world lies at the end of engaging in a serious set of steps to denuclearize and serious negotiations that could accompany that.Earlier Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the six-nation disarmament talks need to be resumed to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. We hope the relevant parties can work together toward the goal and bring the denuclearization back to the track of dialogues, Wang told reporters after private bilateral talks with his North Korean counterpart, Pak Ui Chun. The nuclear disarmament talks hich involve the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia have been stalled since North Korea pulled out of the negotiations in 2009 to protest international condemnation over a rocket launch. As the ASEAN security forum includes all the six countries involved in the nuclear talks, it has previously provided a chance to use informal, sideline discussions to break stalemates over the nuclear standoff. In 2011, top nuclear envoys from the two Koreas met on the sidelines of the forum in Bali, Indonesia, and agreed to work toward a resumption of the six-nation talks. Its still unclear whether such talks will take place in Brunei. South Korean and U.S. officials said they have no immediate plans to meet privately with Pyongyang.North Korea has expressed its intention to rejoin the nuclear talks, but the U.S. and South Korea say North Korea first must demonstrate its sincerity on nuclear disarmament with concrete action.

Djokovic reaches 17th straight Slam quarterfinal

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Two years ago, Novak Djokovic figured out the grass at Wimbledon and found himself holding the trophy at the All England Club for the first time. This year, by his own estimate, Im actually playing better tennis on grass than I played two years ago.Top-seeded Djokovic defeated No. 13 Tommy Haas 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Monday to advance to his 17th straight Grand Slam quarterfinal. He still hasnt lost a set in the tournament.I feel good about myself in this moment, Djokovic said. Im No. 1 in the world. I have no reason to be concerned about my game.Save a few tense moments in the third set, there was little cause for concern for the Serb, who is going for his seventh Grand Slam title this week.He failed to serve out the match at 5-3 and wasted a match point in the next game before closing out the tiebreaker with a forehand winner on his fourth match point. He has yet to drop a set in this tournament. It was a great match from my side, Djokovic said. Minor setback in the third set. I allowed him an opportunity to come back to the match. But a great tiebreak and Im really glad to finish in three. On Wednesday, Djokovic faces No. 7 Tomas Berdych, who reached his first Wimbledon quarterfinal since he was the runner-up in 2010 by beating Bernard Tomic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4.Djokovics quarterfinal streak is the third longest all time behind Roger Federers 36 and Jimmy Connors 27 straight appearances in the final eight. Federers streak ended when he was upset in the second round last week. The Federer loss, combined with Rafael Nadals first-round departure and a number of other upsets created a wide-open feel on the side opposite Djokovics in the draw. No. 2 Andy Murray is the only player on that side left among the top 10 seeds. But on Djokovics side, all four players seeded to be in the quarterfinals have made it: The winner of Djokovic-Berdych will play the winner of another quarterfinal between No. 4 David Ferrer and No. 8 Juan Martin del Potro.Struggling with a sore big toe, Ferrer beat Ivan Dodig, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-1, 6-1, while del Potro overcame a sore left knee, which he hyperextended on Saturday, to top 23rd-seeded Andreas Seppi, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-3.I think in these kind of matches, in quarterfinals, all the players feel something, del Potro said.If Djokovic is feeling anything, it isnt showing. He said his history against Haas hes 0-2 against the German on grass made him a little nervous coming into the match.I just wanted to kind of focus on my game and what I want to do, Djokovic said. I started extremely well. That was obviously helping me to feel confident on the court.

Spain aims for U20 world title in tiki-taka style

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Spains drubbing by Brazil in the Confederations Cup final has given its youth team additional motivation to take home the Under-20 World Cup.Coach Julen Lopetegui said on Monday his team is ready to go all the way and win the title for a second time after 1999.Despite the defeat, our first team is the best example for us. Their composure, their attitude, we get a lot of energy every time we watch them, Lopetegui said. After becoming the only team to win all three group matches, Spain will continue its quest for the world title on Tuesday against Mexico in the most appealing tie of the first knockout round. Also, France will take on host Turkey, Uruguay plays Nigeria and Greece faces Uzbekistan.Spain advanced from what was arguably the toughest group of all six with remarkable ease. It routed the United States 4-1, beat 2009 champion Ghana 1-0, and saw off France 2-1.Lopetegui, who led Spain to the European Under-19 title two years ago, could afford to rotate a lot and use all 18 field players in his 21-man squad during the three matches. For us the most important is that the group is strong, the coach said.Defender Derik was one of just five players featured in every starting lineup, along with striker Jese, who is the teams top goal-scorer with four.According to Lopetegui, Derik is a very important player for us. He has the technique, the concentration, the courage. The rotation of players didnt affect the fluency of Spains game in the group stage. Spain plays like the much-hailed first team, applying the same so-called tiki-taka style of short passing and constant movement of its players, aiming at ball possession for as long as possible. The resemblance between both teams is significant, according to coach Muhsin Ertugral of Turkey, a member of the FIFA technical study group who analyzes all matches during the U20 World Cup.Ertugral said Spain was an example how applying a similar approach to playing football in all youth levels can bring long-term success. When you look to the first Spanish team, Ertugral said, and when you look at the Spanish (U20) team you can see certain players exactly like Xavi, like Busquets, even like Casillas. This is a quite amazing situation.Opponent Mexico was widely regarded as one of the favorites after winning the qualifying tournament in Central America in March. But after losing its opening two group matches against Greece and Paraguay, it only just managed to advance to the round of 16 by beating Mali 4-1.The third place doesnt reflect their quality, Lopetegui said. It was a tough group where they came from ... Mexico has a big team. They are winners of the World Cup Under-17 and they have players who won the Olympic Games.Lopetegui warned his players they might have to dig deep to get past Mexico. They did well, I admire them for their work. They have a lot of ability and skill, the coach said. We will need to thrive to the limit to win against Mexico because I think they are a strong team.

Blatter: Confed Cup a success despite unrest

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - FIFA President Sepp Blatter on Monday declared the Confederations Cup football tournament a success despite clashes between police and protesters near some matches. As host nation Brazil was beating Spain in Sundays final of the 2014 World Cup warm-up tournament, police officers were unleashing a barrage of tear gas canisters and stun grenades outside Rio de Janeiros Maracana Stadium.Blatter said he was not going to discuss police actions to repel protests outside some of the grounds in Brazil over the last two weeks. Thanks to all those who have helped to make this competition such a success despite ... of all this unrest and protests, Blatter said.I am happy to come to the conclusion now, with the sporting results and also with at least the impression that the social unrest is now resting. I dont know how long but it is now resting. Many of Brazils anti-government protesters expressed anger at the lack of investment in public services compared with the billions of dollars being spent on next years World Cup.Football is connecting people in the stadia and connecting people outside the stadia and ... I am sure that we will have a wonderful World Cup next year, Blatter said at a news conference. When you have next year the World Cup, or you have the Olympic Games here (in 2016), you can never make everybody happy. We tried to make everyone happy.Although Maracana Stadium workers and FIFA volunteersappeared to be affected by the tear gas wafting into the venue on Sunday, the Brazilian government believes the tournament was not marred by the disorder in the streets.I am quite sure no one was bothered because of the protests, Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo said through a translator. Of course there were some acts of violence but we just faced these challenges ... the problems are still there, we never try to hide this.We are not a perfect country. We are still a country with many unbalances, differences between the regions and these demonstrations did not happen by chance.Jose Maria Marin, president of the local organizing committee and the Brazilian football confederation, condemned violent acts by some protesters.Any peaceful demonstration must be respected ... it is part of democracy, Marin said. I will not accept robbery and violence and mobs nobody wants this kind of thing.

Oil gains amid protests in Egypt

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil gained 1.5 percent and finished just below $98 a barrel Monday on rising concerns about Middle East tensions and their possible impact on oil supplies. Some analysts speculated that the higher price also reflects some traders' expectations that weekly oil supply data due Wednesday will show a sizeable drop.U.S. benchmark crude for August delivery rose $1.43 to close at $97.99 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil was as high as $98.28 in the morning.Protests in Egypt aimed at ousting Mohammed Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president, continued Monday. Traders were concerned that the protests in Egypt and the civil war in Syria could affect the production and transport of oil supplies in the Middle East and North Africa. In London, Brent crude gained 84 cents to end at $103 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.Brent, the benchmark for international crude oil, tends to react more strongly to potential disruptions to Middle East supplies. For some analysts, the sharper gain in the U.S. benchmark suggested that some traders are looking for news from the Energy Department of a big drop in U.S. supplies. We are looking for a total crude supply draw of around 3 million barrels (per day in) Wednesday's EIA report but we wouldn't be surprised by a significantly larger decline, wrote Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates, in a note to clients.Reports on manufacturing in the world's two biggest economies gave opposite impressions.U.S. manufacturing activity grew in June behind a pickup in new orders and stronger production. The increase suggests factories could rebound in the second half of the year and help the economy grow.Meanwhile China's manufacturing sector weakened again in June amid a credit crunch and slower U.S. and European orders, two surveys showed. The findings added to signs that growth in the world's second-largest economy is decelerating.

Lehmann picks Watson, Rogers as openers for Ashes

Posted:

WORCESTER (AP) - Nearly five-and-a-half years after his first and only test appearance, Chris Rogers was handed the chance to revive his international career on Monday when he was made one of Australias opening batsmen for the first Ashes test next week.New Australia coach Darren Lehmann said Rogers and Shane Watson will lead from the front at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, denting David Warners hopes of an immediate return to the team following his suspension for punching England batsman Joe Root in a bar-room incident last month. It completed a transformation in fortunes for the 35-year-old Rogers, whose only taste of international cricket came against India in Perth in January 2008 after an injury to Matthew Hayden. He made 4 and 15 and was never asked back, soon losing his Cricket Australia contract too. However, he has plundered runs in domestic cricket for Victoria and Western Australia and has good experience of English conditions, having played county cricket for Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and, most recently, Middlesex.Im looking forward to it and if I do well I can be particularly satisfied, said the left-handed Rogers, who has 790 runs in 15 innings for Middlesex this season at an average of nearly 66. I have nothing to lose.Watsons 94-ball 90 in a tour match against Somerset last week looks to have swayed Lehmann, who has called time for now at least on the opening partnership of Ed Cowan and Warner that Australia has relied on for the past 18 months.Warners place was always in jeopardy after he was fined and suspended for swinging at Root in a late-night incident after a Champions Trophy match between the two Ashes foes in Birmingham. His ban expires in time for him to be available for the first test, starting on July 10, but he would have gone into the match with no form or match sharpness a major risk for an Australian batting lineup that has appeared shaky so far this tour.Cowan and Warner could yet bat further down the order, with Lehmann only confirming the names of his openers for the first test.Theres not many (question marks) now, were pretty comfortable with it, Lehmann said. Were pretty close. Its one or two (places) and well work those out over the next four or five days.Australia plays Worcestershire in a final tour match, starting on Tuesday, before the first of five Ashes tests.
