Wave of bombings kills 65 in Baghdad province

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A wave of bombings killed 65 people in Baghdad province on Saturday night, officials said, as Iraq struggles to contain its worst violence since 2008, in which over 520 have died this month.Twelve car bombs and a roadside bomb hit the city of Baghdad, while another bomb exploded in Madain to the south of the capital, a police colonel and a medical official said. The blasts also wounded 190 people. The bombs struck as Baghdad residents turned out to shop and relax in cafes after iftar, the meal that breaks the daily fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In the deadliest incidents, two car bombs killed 12 people in the Karrada, while two car bombs and a roadside bomb hit Zafraniyah, both areas in central Baghdad.Violence also struck north Iraq.A roadside bomb against a patrol killed a policeman and wounded another in the city of Mosul, while a car bomb southeast of the city killed a woman and wounded 22 people, including seven police, and a bomb to its west wounded three people.Saturday was the deadliest day of violence in Iraq since June 10, when attacks killed 78 people. The Saturday bombings came a day after a suicide bomber killed 20 people inside a crowded Sunni mosque north of the capital.Militants have attacked both Sunni and Shiite mosques in recent months, raising fears of a return to all-out sectarian conflict that killed tens of thousands of people in past years.More than 2,700 people have been killed in Iraq since the beginning of 2013, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources. Most senior officials and religious leaders remain silent on the unrest. In May, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered a shakeup of senior security officers, but the move has failed to curb the unrest.Iraq has faced years of attacks by militants, but analysts say widespread discontent among members of its Sunni minority, which the government has failed to address, has fuelled this year's surge in unrest.Iraqi Sunnis accuse the Shiite-led government of marginalising and targeting their community, including via unwarranted arrests and terrorism charges.Protests broke out in Sunni-majority areas at the end of 2012 and are still ongoing. On April 23, security forces moved against protesters near the town of Hawijah in the north, sparking clashes that killed 53 people and sending tensions soaring.More than 450 people have been killed each month from April to the present. In addition to security, the government in Baghdad is also failing when it comes to other basic functions.Iraqis are faced with severely lacking basic services, including electricity and clean water, and corruption is widespread. And political squabbling has paralysed the government, which has passed almost no major legislation in years.

Palestinians: US says 1967 lines basis for talks

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AP) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas agreed to resume peace talks with Israel only after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry gave him a letter guaranteeing that the basis of the negotiations will be Israel's pre-1967 borders, two senior Palestinian officials said Saturday. The officials, both of whom are close to the Palestinian leader and privy to internal discussions, said the U.S. letter also stipulated that both sides are to refrain from taking any steps that would jeopardize the outcome of the talks. Israel is not to issue new tenders for Jewish settlements in the West Bank, while the Palestinians are not to pursue diplomatic action against Israel at any international organizations, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media. The talks with Kerry were about to collapse, and the letter came as a lifeline in the last minute bargaining, one of the Palestinian officials said. There was no immediate comment from the State Department. After intense shuttle diplomacy, Kerry announced on Friday that Israel and the Palestinians had agreed on a basis for returning to the peace process, which broke down five years ago. The two sides are to meet likely in the coming week to work out final details on actually resuming their negotiations on the toughest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Kerry would not give details on the agreement on the negotiations' framework. The best way to give these negotiations a chance is to keep them private. he said. We know that the challenges require some very tough choices in the days ahead. Today, however, I am hopeful. The Palestinians long refused to return to the negotiating table unless Israel agreed to several preconditions, including that the talks be based on Israel's borders before the 1967 Mideast war, when Israel captured the Gaza Strip, West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel frequently called for talks to resume without preconditions, insisting that all core issues should be resolved through dialogue.Speculation has been rife for weeks that the sides would find a way to sidestep Israel's reluctance to offer assurances of its pre-1967 borders as the framework for talks by having the guarantee provided by the United States.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces sharp opposition from within his majority coalition to such a move. One key ally, Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, has threatened to pull his Jewish Home Party out of the government altogether if the prime minister agrees to the border conditions. The basis of the negotiations themselves not even the core issues at the heart of the conflict has been a major impediment to resuming talks. On Thursday evening, the Palestinian leadership balked at dropping a main condition: They demand a guarantee that negotiations on borders between a Palestinian state and Israel would be based on the cease-fire line that held from 1949 until the 1967 war.Kerry's announcement late Friday suggested that the question had been resolved, although Kerry offered no details and said the best way to give these negotiations a chance is to keep them private.

Syrian army bombs northern rebel town, killing 5

Posted:

BEIRUT (AP) - Syrian government forces bombed a strategic rebel town in the country's north for the third straight day Saturday, pounding it with airstrikes that killed at least five people, activists said.President Bashar Assad's troops in recent weeks have seized the momentum in the civil war, now in its third year. Regime forces have been on offensive against rebels on several fronts, including in the northern Idlib province along the border with Turkey. In Idlib, government forces this week besieged the town of Saraqeb, hitting it with rockets, tank fire and air raids, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. On Saturday, the Observatory said military aircraft dropped at least 15 makeshift bombs, known as barrel bombs, on the town. The bombs are made of hundreds of pounds (kilograms) of explosives stuffed into barrels.Meanwhile, airstrikes by fighter jets killed at least five people, including three children, said the Observatory, which relies on reports from a network of activists on the ground. The number of casualties was likely to rise because many of the people have been buried in the rubble of buildings that collapsed in the shelling, the group said.Assad's troops are in firm control of the provincial capital, also called Idlib, while dozens of rebel brigades control the surrounding countryside. Clashes between the warring sides have been fierce as Assad's troops try to push opposition fighters further away from the city. With a population of 40,000 people, Saraqeb is Idlib's second-largest urban center. It has been under opposition's control for more than a year and it is strategically important for both sides because of its location along the highway that links Syria's largest city, Aleppo, with the capital, Damascus, the seat of Assad's power. The town also connects Aleppo, the country's commercial hub that has been carved up between government- and rebel-held areas for the past year, with the coastal city of Latakia. That city is a stronghold of Syria's ruling Alawite sect, which includes the president's family.Opposition fighters have been using the highway to ferry their own supplies and have been launching guerrilla attacks on army convoys traveling between military bases in Idlib province and Aleppo.Observatory director Rami Abdul Rahman said the army's latest offensive on Saraqeb could be a push to set the stage for an eventual offensive on Aleppo. But the rebels have kept their ground at least 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Saraqeb, forcing the regime to rely on its air power.Syria's state news agency said the army fought terrorists around Idlib province, destroying their hideouts and makeshift weapons factories in several villages and towns near the provincial capital, including in Saraqeb. Several fighters belonging to the radical Islamic group Jabhat al-Nusra were killed in the fighting, the report said.In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said the new military-backed interim government will reevaluate its policy toward Syria following the ouster of the President Mohammed Morsi. His Islamist-dominated government cut diplomatic relations with Syria and supported Assad's opponents, offering Syrians, seeking refuge in Egypt favorable conditions. The Observatory said more than 60 opposition fighters were killed in violence that has raged in the northeastern province of Hassakeh this week. Pro-government Kurdish fighters captured a major checkpoint Saturday morning in the province after intense clashes with al-Qaida-linked rebels, the Observatory said.Kurdish gunmen captured mortars, jeeps with heavy machine guns mounted on them as well as large amounts of weapons at the checkpoint that sits on a main road intersection in Hassakeh, the group said.

Turkey bars protestors' wedding at Istanbul park

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Police have fired a water cannon in downtown Istanbul to disperse an anti-government demonstration. The clash occurred Saturday after hundreds of people tried to enter the city's Gezi Park to hold a wedding ceremony for a couple who had reportedly met during last month's widespread protests against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 10-year rule.Police closed the park to prevent the ceremony, then forced demonstrators off nearby Taksim square to a pedestrian street and fired the water cannon, according to Turkey's private Dogan news agency. No casualties were immediately reported. The earlier wave of nationwide anti-Erdogan protests was sparked by a brutal police crackdown on a sit-in by environmentalists in the park and the square in June. There have been sporadic demonstrations since then.

Golf: Westwood takes two stroke lead at British Open

Posted:

GULLANE (AFP) - Lee Westwood will take a two-stroke lead into Sunday's climax to the British Open after he and Tiger Woods duelled for the lead throughout Saturday's third round.Playing together in the penultimate pairing, they both quickly sped past overnight leader Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain and then went head-to-head over the mighty Muirfield links on another sun-drenched afternoon. At the end of it, 40-year-old Englishman Westwood was the winner thanks to a pivotal 17th hole when he birdied, while Woods bogeyed for a two-stroke swing.Hunter Mahan of the United States was the only other player to stay under par, by the smallest of margins, thanks to a 68 and he will go out with Westwood in the final pairing on Sunday.Woods will partner Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia, who was alone on level par after a 70.On a day of fluctuating fortunes, the best golfers in the world again grappled with the deep pot bunkers, bouncy fairways and super-fast greens that are the mark of the famed East Lothian links. Some succeeded and will contest for golf's supreme title on Sunday, others failed and will make up the numbers in the final round. At the start of the day Jimenez of Spain was leading by one with a quartet of Woods, Westwood, Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson breathing hotly down his neck.In the space of two holes Woods was ahead thanks to a 18-foot birdie putt followed by a missed four-footer from Jimenez minutes later.Westwood then went on a charge, sinking a monster putt for eagle from the edge of the fifth green and adding a birdie at the seventh to lead by three. But he bogeyed the next two holes, and he and Woods made the turn tied at two under.Westwood nudged ahead again thanks to a majestic mid-iron approach shot to six feet at the 14th, but a wayward four-iron at the par-three 16th saw the duo back level again. The final twist came at the par-five 17th where Woods bunkered his second and took a bogey while Westwood chipped and single-putted for a birdie and a two-stroke swing. If the record books are anything to go by that could be a fatal blow to Woods who has never won a major when trailing going into the final round. For Westwood it will be the chance to finally win a major trophy at the 62nd time of asking and he would be the first Englishman to win The Open since Nick Faldo did so at Muirfield 21 years ago.Finishing the day at one over par was a quartet of Swede Henrik Stenson (74), Angel Cabrera of Argentina (73), and Americans Zach Johnson (73) and Ryan Moore (72).Still well in contention were four-time major winner Phil Mickelson, who had a 72 to stand at two over, level with Francesco Molinari (72), with Sergio Garcia (68), Brandt Snedeker (69) and Jason Day (72) among those perched on three over.Defending champion Ernie Els had a 70 to get to five over.

Root century overpowers hapless Australia

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root's unbeaten 178 left Australia needing to make cricket history if they were to prevent England going 2-0 up with three to play in the Ashes.England were 333 for five in their second innings, a colossal lead of 566 runs, at stumps on the third day of the second Test at Lord's on Saturday.Root's century, the second of his eight-match Test career, was exactly the kind of large or 'daddy hundred' so beloved of England batting coach and former Test opener Graham Gooch.Ashes-holders England lost just two wickets in a near-ideal day for the hosts and, with so much time left in the match, the lack of a declaration from captain Alastair Cook was no surprise.Long before Saturday's close, Australia, bowled out for just 128 on Friday, needed to surpass the world record fourth innings winning total of 418 for seven made by the West Indies against them at St John's in 2002/03 if they were to cause a stunning upset. This was the 22-year-old Root's first Test hundred as an opener after the Yorkshireman made 104 against New Zealand on his Headingley home ground in May. That century, in a match in which then Test opener Nick Compton struggled, persuaded England to promote Root to the top of the order, where he bats for Yorkshire. The selectors' confidence in Root was justified by an innings spanning 110 overs and nearly eight hours at the crease that was a lesson in Test-match batting to Australia's fallible top order.Importantly, Root was not fazed by watching England collapse to 30 for three on Friday as Peter Siddle's treble strike gave Australia a glimmer of hope.Last night was tough. They bowled exceptionally well and we knew we were going to have to scrap for a bit and earn the right to score runs later in the day, Root told BBC Radio's Test Match Special.I knew how hammering it home was important. He added: It was pretty special, as a kid growing up playing the Ashes is the pinnacle, and to get a hundred and at Lord's as well was a nice feeling.Together with Yorkshire colleague Tim Bresnan, who made an admirable 38 as nightwatchman, he put on 99 before sharing a fifth-wicket stand of 153 with first-innings century-maker Ian Bell (74).Jonny Bairstow, another Yorkshireman, was 11 not out at stumps after helping Root add an unbroken 51 for the sixth wicket.England, 1-0 up in the five-match series after last week's 14-run victory at Trent Bridge, resumed Saturday on 31 for three, already 264 runs in front. After two days of blazing sunshine, conditions were overcast for the first time in the match and offered a hint of swing. But Root, 18 not out overnight, eased the first ball, from Siddle, through midwicket for four and was rarely troubled from then on.And when he reached 70, Root became the first batsman this English season to score 1,000 first-class runs.Bresnan batted solidly until he pulled a James Pattinson bouncer to Chris Rogers in front of square. In a series already full of Decision Review System controversies, there was one more Saturday when Bell, on three, edged Ryan Harris low towards Steven Smith at gully.Smith appealed immediately for a catch but, with the umpires and Bell uncertain, the decision was passed to third umpire Tony Hill.As is often the case, replays were inconclusive and the verdict went Bell's way.Although 97 not out at tea, there were no nervous 90s for Root, who cut teenage left-arm spinner Ashton Agar for his 12th four to complete a chanceless 247-ball hundred.Australia captain Michael Clarke, perhaps mindful of keeping his faster bowlers fit for future assignments, opted against taking the new ball.Meanwhile Root, in a perfectly paced innings, upped the tempo with a succession of stylish boundaries.Bell fell when he pulled Smith to Rogers at midwicket but Root put the leg-spinner in his place by pulling him for two sixes in three balls.
