It's a boy UK's Kate gives birth to royal heir

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Its a boy Prince Williams wife, Kate, has given birth to a prince who is now third in line to the British throne. The child was born Monday, after many Britons woke up to the news that Kate, also known as the Duchess of Cambridge, had gone into labor with the couples first child. The birth announcement, via a press release from Kensington Palace, said the boy was born at 4:24 p.m. weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. William was present for the birth, the statement said. The announcement did not include a name for the future monarch, though one is expected to be announced in the next few days. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight, it said. Members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.Cries of joy erupted from the waiting crowd amassed near Buckingham Palace as the news came through, and hundreds of onlookers some of whom had camped outside for hours crushed against the palaces fences to catch a glimpse of the bulletin formally announcing the birth placed outside the palaces forecourt.Williams father, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, spoke of their joy and pride in becoming grandparents for the first time.It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy, Prince Charles said in a statement. Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyones life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future. The royal birth recalled that of the babys father, William, in 1982, at the same central London hospital. Many remember the moment when he was carried out in his mother Princess Dianas arms with proud father Prince Charles at their side.William and Kates son is expected to follow Charles and William to the throne. No one can tell what political and personal changes the intervening years will bring, but the baby can be expected to become the head of state of 16 countries, including Britain, Australia and Canada. The child will also eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The little prince represents a living link to Britains imperial history the infant is the great-great-great-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, who ruled at the peak of British power. Many Britons had hoped that William and Kate would start a family shortly after their gala 2011 wedding, which drew a global television audience in the hundreds of millions. The couple waited, however, until William was nearly finished with his military work as a search and rescue helicopter pilot based at an air base in a remote island off the coast of Wales. That allowed Kate to ease into royal life, and to become more comfortable in the spotlight, before becoming a parent. It also allowed her to play a supporting role during Queen Elizabeth IIs Diamond Jubilee celebrations last summer. The first months of her pregnancy were not easy, and she was hospitalized in early December with acute morning sickness that left her weak and dehydrated. She seemed to recover her stamina fairly quickly and made a series of public appearances until the final weeks before giving birth, drawing praise for her poise and good cheer. The royal couple and their newborn are expected to spend much of their time in the coming years in renovated quarters at Kensington Palace, where William and Harry also spent much of their childhood.Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible. That may be challenging in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities.

Afghans 'ready' to sign US security pact: Karzai

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - The Afghan president told the top US military commander Monday that he was ready in principle to let American troops stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014, a month after suspending security talks.General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, is the most senior American to meet Hamid Karzai since he suspended negotiations for a long-term security pact in protest at how the Taliban opened a liaison office in Qatar.Karzais office said both sides discussed the Afghan-US security pact.President Karzai once again emphasised that the Afghan people have suffered from long years of war in their country, and want peace to be restored, a statement said.President Karzai said with that hope, Afghans are ready to sign a security pact with the US, on condition that it leads to peace and stability in the country, the strengthening of Afghan forces, and a united and sovereign Afghanistan, it added.Karzai suspended the security talks, furious that the Taliban styled their office in Doha as an embassy for a self-styled government in waiting.Afghan government forces have formally taken responsibility for security from US-led NATO troops due to leave the country next year. But there are concerns about their ability to stand against the Taliban unaided. The New York Times reported this month that tense relations with Karzai might see Washington quicken its troop withdrawal or even leave no forces behind after 2014.The Pentagon has said any potential longer-term US military presence would focus on targeting remnants of Al-Qaeda and, training and equipping Afghan forces. The idea of a zero option of leaving no troops behind was mooted earlier this year by US deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes. The US relationship with Karzai, while never good and often volatile, deteriorated again over stillborn peace talks with the Taliban in Doha.Last week Karzais chief of staff, Karim Khorram, claimed the Taliban office was part of a plot to break up Afghanistan, orchestrated by either Pakistan or the United States.

Syrian rebels capture key village near Aleppo city

Posted:

BEIRUT (AP) - Syrian rebels went on the offensive in Syrias north Monday, seizing three villages and attacking a main supply road, trying to counter government advances in recent weeks throughout the country.Mondays clashes near the northern city of Aleppo killed more than a dozen government soldiers, activists said. The battle came a day after forces fighting for President Bashar Assad killed dozens of rebels near Damascus. The battles showed that more than two years after it started, the Syrian civil war appears far from over, and neither side is showing signs of fatigue.According to the U.N., at least 93,000 people have been killed in the bloody conflict. In another rebel attack Monday, two suicide bombers from the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra blew up their cars in a military post and an army checkpoint in the town of Sukhna near the central city of Palmyra, killing and wounding large numbers of troops, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It said warplanes bombed the town after the two blasts, causing casualties among civilians. The fighting in the northern province of Aleppo came a day after opposition fighters sustained some of their heaviest losses in months.Government troops killed at least 75 rebels in and around the Syrian capital on Sunday, the Observatory said. The rebel capture of the strategic village of Khan al-Assal and two smaller villages was a rare victory in recent months.Khan al-Assal has been a major front in the fight for Aleppo. In March, chemical weapons were allegedly used in the village, killing more than 30 people. The Syrian government and the rebels blame each other for the attack.Opposition fighters on Monday took control of the villages on the southwestern outskirts of Aleppo, though clashes were still going on near Khan al-Assal. Inside Aleppo, airstrikes targeted several rebel-held districts, said the Observatory, an anti-regime activists group that relies on reports from activists on the ground. The oppositions Aleppo Media Center said several rebel factions are taking part in the operation that aims to cut government supply lines to the southern areas of Aleppo province. The AMC said rebels cut the road, but the Observatory said fighting was still in progress there.Regime forces have been relying on the road to bring supplies and food to government-controlled areas in the north after rebels cut the main highway between Damascus and Aleppo, Syrias largest city, last year. The Observatory said 14 government troops were killed Monday in the fighting in Aleppo province.Fighting also raged in Homs, Syrias third largest city, where the regime has been trying to oust rebels from the city center in an offensive that started in late June. Mondays clashes concentrated on the rebel-held Khaldiyeh district, the Observatory said.Rockets fired by government troops on Khaldiyeh hit the historic Khalid Ibn al-Walid mosque, damaging the tomb of a revered figure in Sunni Islam inside the mosque. This is the first time they hit the tomb, said Homs-based activist who identified himself only as Abu Bilal for fear of government reprisals. Ten rockets hit the mosque today, he said.An amateur video posted online showed heavy damage in the mosque, including a hole in one of its nine domes. The fence around the tomb was blown away and debris was scattered all over the mosque. The video appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.

Plane's front gear collapses in LaGuardia landing

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The front landing gear of a Southwest Airlines flight arriving at New Yorks LaGuardia Airport collapsed Monday shortly after the plane touched down on the runway, leaving several people with injuries, officials said. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said 10 passengers were treated at the scene Monday night, with six being taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The six crew members were taken to another hospital for observation.Dallas-based Southwest said there were 150 people on the flight, while the Port Authority said there were 149.The Federal Aviation Administration said Flight 345 landed at 5:45 p.m., and came safely to a stop at the edge of the runway. The nose of the Boeing 737 could be seen on the ground. The airport was temporarily closed, but one of two runways was operating shortly after 7 p.m.The FAA is investigating, as is the National Transportation Safety Board.Richard Strauss, who was on a nearby plane waiting to take off for Washington, said the nose of the plane was completely down on the ground. Its something that Ive never seen before. Its bizarre.A rear stairwell or slide could be seen extending from the Southwest flight, said Strauss, who owns a Washington public relations firm. His plane, which was about 100 yards (90 meters) from the Southwest flight, wasnt allowed to taxi back to the gate, he said.Bobby Abtahi, an attorney trying to catch a flight to Dallas, was watching from the terminal and heard a crowd reacting to the accident.I heard some people gasp and scream. I looked over and saw sparks flying at the front of the plane, he said. The incident came 16 days after Asiana Flight 214 crash-landed at San Franciscos international airport on July 6, killing two Chinese teenagers; a third was killed when a fire truck ran over her while responding to the crash, authorities said. Dozens of people were injured in that landing, which involved a Boeing 777 flying from South Korea.

Mandela showing 'sustained improvement

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Nelson Mandelas condition continues to improve, the South African government said Monday, six weeks after he was admitted to hospital with a recurring lung infection.Former President Mandela is still in a critical condition in hospital but shows sustained improvement, President Jacob Zumas office said.In another upbeat statement, the presidency also thanked South Africans and the world for the outpouring of support that marked Mandelas 95th birthday last week. The birthday celebrations for the former president on the 18th of July were the biggest ever this year, attracting scores of South Africans who engaged in community service in honour of Madiba, the presidency said, using Mandelas clan name.South Africans had come out in large numbers to mark the occasion, after weeks fraught with concern about their beloved elder statesman.Earlier Monday, Mandla Mandela reported that his grandfather was steadily improving.Mandla, who is embroiled in a bitter spat with family members over his grandfathers burial site, visited Mandelas Pretoria health facility on Sunday. The visit left me with a warm feeling because my grandfather is getting stronger and stronger every day, he said.In a statement, Mandla also issued a thinly veiled rebuke to his relatives after lawyers for more than a dozen family members had claimed in a court filing that the Nobel Peace Prize winner was in a vegetative state.Mandla said his grandfathers recovery flies in the face of those who have been busy spreading lies that Madiba is in a vegetative state and just waiting for his support machines to be switched off, he said. The oldest Mandela grandson, who is chief of Mandelas birthplace Mvezo in the rural Eastern Cape province, has fallen out with relatives after moving the three graves of Mandelas children without consulting the family.Following a court order, the remains were reburied earlier this month in Mandelas childhood village of Qunu, where the anti-apartheid hero has said he himself wishes to be buried after his death.Mandlas family has laid a charge of grave-tampering against him.Mandla was notably absent for Mandelas birthday celebrations in hospital last Thursday. He was instead carrying out community projects around his village as part of Mandela Day, a global day of charitable acts in honour of his grandfather, seen as the democratic father of South Africa.Mandelas current hospital stay is his longest since he was released from prison in 1990, after serving 27 years under the apartheid regime.

Sampras suspects Wimbledon record is safe

Posted:

TORONTO (AP) - Pete Sampras isnt worried. He thinks the Wimbledon mens singles record he shares with Roger Federer is safe for the foreseeable future.I dont know if someone in the next 10 years will be able to win five or six Wimbledons, the retired tennis great said during a conference call Monday leading to next months induction into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame in Toronto.Sampras, who will also play in the Rogers Legends Cup, and Federer have both won seven singles titles at the All England Club. Scotlands Andy Murray won his first Wimbledon crown this month. This was Andys time. It was Andys event to go and get and he did it, Sampras said. Hes definitely the man to beat at the U.S. Open.Murray is ranked No. 2 behind Novak Djokovic. David Ferrer is No. 3, followed by Rafael Nadal and Federer.I think the biggest thing for me is Murray in the past 12 months has just stepped up, Sampras said. But he doesnt see anyone being able to conquer Wimbledons grass courts the way he and Federer did.Roger and myself, our game on grass was so ... dominant, Sampras said. I think Murray can win some more and Djokovic, but I dont think that dominant game is out there thats going to win it seven times. But I could be wrong.Of course, there is always the possibility Federer could add another. After his second-round loss at Wimbledon this year, he switched to a larger-faced racket.I dont know where his heads at, whether hes going to stick with it, said Sampras, who switched to a similar racket after he retired.Sampras says it helped his backhand and made his serve more powerful.I wish I would have tried it, at least a little bit on the clay, when I was playing, he said. It would have helped me a little bit.

Skipping breakfast increases heart attack risk

Posted:

ATLANTA (AP) - Another reason to eat breakfast: Skipping it may increase your chances of a heart attack.A study of older men found those who regularly skipped breakfast had a 27 percent higher risk of a heart attack than those who ate a morning meal.Theres no reason why the results wouldnt apply to other people, too, the Harvard researchers said. Why would skipping breakfast be a heart attack risk? Experts arent certain, but heres what they think: People who dont eat breakfast are more likely to be hungrier later in the day and eat larger meals. Those meals mean the body must process a larger amount of calories in a shorter amount of time. That can spike sugar levels in the blood and perhaps lead to clogged arteries. The researchers did not ask what the study participants ate for breakfast and were not prepared to pass judgment on whether a fatty, sugary breakfast is better than no breakfast at all.We dont know whether its the timing or content of breakfast thats important. Its probably both, said Andrew Odegaard, a University of Minnesota researcher who has studied a link between skipping breakfast and health problems like obesity and high blood pressure.Generally, people who eat breakfast tend to eat a healthier diet, he added. The new research was released Monday by the journal Circulation. It was an observational study, so its not designed to prove a cause and effect. But when done well, such studies can reveal important health risks. The researchers surveyed nearly 27,000 men about their eating habits in 1992. About 13 percent of them said they regularly skipped breakfast. They all were educated health professionals like dentists and veterinarians and were at least 45.Over the next 16 years, 1,527 suffered fatal or non-fatal heart attacks, including 171 who had said they regularly skipped breakfast. In other words, over 7 percent of the men who skipped breakfast had heart attacks, compared to nearly 6 percent of those who ate breakfast. The researchers calculated the increased risk at 27 percent, taking into account other factors like smoking, drinking, diet and health problems like high blood pressure and obesity. As many as 18 percent of U.S. adults regularly skip breakfast, according to federal estimates. So the study could be important news for many, said Eric Rimm, one of the study authors at the Harvard School of Public Health. Its a really simple message, he said. Breakfast is an important meal.

CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) - NASA is rushing to get spacesuit repair tools on a launch to the International Space Station this weekend.Last week, an Italian astronaut almost drowned in his flooded helmet while performing a spacewalk.NASA is still uncertain why water leaked into the helmet worn by Luca Parmitano last Tuesday. But if spare parts are on board, then these repair tools will be useful in swapping out the bad pieces. The Russian supply ship is set to blast off Saturday from KazakhstanThe spacesuit trouble is thought to be somewhere in the cooling system. The tools could be used on a variety of parts, including a water relief valve that is part of the cooling system.Parmitano, meanwhile, is doing fine.

Dollar drops on weak US housing data

Posted:

NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - The dollar Monday fell against other major currencies after disappointing US housing data revived talk of a slower time-table to scale back the Feds aggressive bond-buying program.Near 2100 GMT, the euro gained on the dollar, trading at $1.3186 Monday compared with $1.3139 Friday. The dollar fell to 99.59 yen from 100.35 yen.The euro also fell against the yen, trading at 131.33 from 131.90.The British pound and Swiss franc also advanced against the dollar. The dollar in recent weeks has generally risen against most major currencies on the expectation that the US Federal Reserve would pull back on some of its most aggressive expansionary policies earlier than other leading central banks. But existing-home sales Monday came in below expectations, falling 1.2 percent in June to 5.08 million from 5.15 million in May, according to data from the National Association of Realtors. The data followed disappointing recent figures on building permits and housing starts.Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX, attributed the recent spate of unimpressive US housing data to the jump in US mortgage rates after talk of an imminent Fed taper pushed treasury yields higher. The trifecta of weak US housing data, will (inevitably) force US monetary policymakers to rethink the path of unwinding QE3, Vecchio said, referring to the bond-purchase program known as quantitative easing.Given the implication that borrowing costs are rising, a further sustained increase in US yields has negative implications for the US housing market, and thus, for the US dollar over the medium term.Meanwhile, the yens surge came in the wake of weekend elections that boosted Prime Minister Shinzo Abes ruling Liberal Democrats.Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange, attributed the yens rally to buy the rumor, sell the fact trading, given the expectation that further empowering Abe will continue to keep the yen biased lower in the medium term since Abe has favored expansionary policies.Ravi Bharadwaj, senior pricing and market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions, said Abes victory could mean larger fiscal stimulus programs in the coming months were the Japanese economy to falter.Among other currencies, the pound rose to $1.5360 from Fridays level of $1.5258.The dollar dropped to 0.9360 Swiss franc from 0.9408.

Lorgat open about his problems with BCCI

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Former International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Monday he was saddened by what he called his poor relationship with Indias board, a situation that led to the powerful BCCI even expressing its opposition to him leading South African cricket.Despite Indias concerns, Lorgat was appointed Cricket South Africas new chief executive officer on Saturday, with CSA deciding its own issues took priority over the wishes of the most influential country in the game.We will take decisions guided by what the interests of CSA are, CSA President Chris Nenzani said at a news conference on Monday to welcome Lorgat to the role.Lorgat also dealt with a barrage of questions at Wanderers Stadium on his problems with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and conceded I didnt expect such a poor relationship to have emanated after I left the ICC.The South African former head of the ICC said he was still not completely sure what the BCCIs problems with him were, but he wanted to smooth them over. He said an ICC ethics officer had cleared him of any wrongdoing relating to working outside his remit at the world body, but didnt elaborate further. Its probably right for me not to speak much on this subject except for me to say I was particularly saddened, Lorgat said. I will do my level best to understand what the issues are with those who are not happy. If I need to sit across the table, go to India, whatever it takes. If it means that I have wronged somebody and I need to apologize ... I will do so. I will have no hesitation to do so.Nenzani confirmed that the BCCI initially did not want Lorgat appointed, as has been widely reported in South Africa and India over the last few months. Indias concerns over Lorgat were expressed in a meeting between BCCI and CSA officials as far back as February, Nenzani said, when Lorgat, South Africas former head selector, became a leading candidate to return to his home country as chief executive. We had an opportunity to talk to the Indian president, the president of the BCCI. They raised certain concerns about the possible appointment of Mr. Lorgat as our CEO, Nenzani said of the February meeting. We made it clear to them, we said we would not undermine your concerns, we would not ignore your concerns, but we will be in a position to look into this matter and see how best the interests of CSA are addressed. The ultimate decision to go against India crickets undoubted dominant force may have been influenced by a perceived shift in power at the BCCI as much as by South Africas own pressing need for experienced leadership. Since the February meeting, BCCI President Narainswamy Srinivasan has agreed to temporarily step aside while his son-in-law is investigated for alleged involvement in Indian crickets spot-fixing scandal.Nenzani dismissed that as a coincidence. There is no link between what we have done and whats happening in India, he said. We are not unaware as to what is happening in India. However, our standpoint is very clear. They are going through a process and a period of challenges and our own point is for us to keep our distance. We cannot begin to get entangled in their issues.Lorgat, who led international cricket at the ICC for four years from 2008-12, takes charge of a South African cricket body that also is troubled after its last permanent CEO was sacked in an unauthorized bonus scandal that had links to India and stemmed from South Africas hosting of the 2009 IPL tournament. One of Lorgats priorities would be to build some confidence in CSA, he said, with South African crickets off-field leadership recently not matching the on-field success of its top-ranked test team. But his problems with India also need to be urgently dealt with, with that country the most powerful and influential in global cricket decisions. You cannot argue the fact that India is an important player in world cricket, Lorgat said. I knew that before I got to the ICC, I know that better after I come from the ICC.India tours South Africa for test, one-day and Twenty20 series from November.
