Dollar broadly higher, holds above 100 yen Posted: SYDNEY (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar hovered at one-month highs against a basket of major currencies on Wednesday, while Asia shares drooped after a batch of U.S. data reinforced views that the days of easy money from the Federal Reserve are numbered.U.S. new motor vehicle sales in June were poised to record their strongest month in more than 5-1/2 years, while factories posted a second straight month of gains in new orders in May.Ordinarily these numbers should bolster risk appetite, but investors at this stage appeared to be more worried that the Fed will keep to its mantra of gradually withdrawing stimulus as the economic recovery continues. The U.S. dollar gained broad momentum after breaking above 100 yen for the first time since early June. That helped push the euro towards a fresh one-month low near $1.2950. Traders said the threat of political instability in Portugal gave euro sellers an added excuse. The rally in the greenback left the Australian dollar dangling precariously close to a three-year trough of $0.9110, a complete turnaround from Monday's rally to $0.9253.Equity investors, meanwhile, were quick to take profits in recent gains following a soggy finish on Wall Street. Some positioning ahead of the U.S. Independence Day holiday on Thursday and key U.S. jobs report on Friday were also cited for the market's cautious stance.MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 0.4 percent, pulling further away from a near two-week high set on Tuesday.Japanese stocks managed to outperform the rest of Asia thanks to the fall in the yen. The Nikkei share index slipped 0.1 percent after an early push to a fresh five-week high lost steam.
Oil above $100 on Egypt protests, US demand outlook Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - Oil is above $100 a barrel for the first time since September, as traders worried about disruptions to Mideast supplies after embattled Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi vowed not to resign.Benchmark oil was up $1.71 to $101.32 at 9:40 p.m. in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile exchange.Oil last crossed $100 a barrel on Sept. 14.Morsi demanded late Tuesday that the military withdraw its ultimatum that he meet the demands of protesters or see the constitution suspended and a new leadership installed.Expectations of a sharp drop in U.S. supplies are also driving the gains. The Energy Department's weekly report on U.S. stockpiles of crude oil is due out Wednesday.
Montgomerie misses out on British Open Posted: GULLANE, Scotland (AP) - Colin Montgomerie's rushed journey to take place in British Open qualifying on Tuesday was all in vain as the Scottish veteran failed to make the field for the major after struggling in wet conditions.Montgomerie drove from Pittsburgh, where he finished ninth on Sunday in the Senior Players Championship, to New Jersey, and then a flight home to Scotland, arriving Monday. After a few hours' rest, he teed up Tuesday at the Gullane No. 1 course, east of Edinburgh, in the hope of securing one of three spots in golf's oldest major - which starts July 18 at nearby Muirfield.Montgomerie was tied second after the opening with a 69 in the morning, but then got caught up in the slow pace of play to shoot 76 in the afternoon. The pace of play was shocking but that's not the reason why I didn't qualify. I was five-under through 12 holes this morning and threw it away. I played very poorly this afternoon, Montgomerie said.Montgomerie will now take a week off and return to the States next week for the U.S. Senior Open in Omaha, Nebraska. It will mean missing the Scottish Open the same week and the first time 'Monty' will not tee up in his national Open since his Scottish Open debut in 1987.Australia's John Wade shot a new Dunbar course record of seven under par 63 to qualify, while Scotland's Lloyd Saltman also qualified for his third British Open. Saltman, who was the leading amateur in the 2010 event at St. Andrews, lives close to Muirfield.I'm just delighted big time to be back into The Open and especially Muirfield as I have been driving past every day and watching the stands going up, he said.To be now playing at Muirfield and just living 10 minutes down the road is amazing. I've only played there twice before and that's been in the winter when it's been freezing and with the ground solid. I practice at Archerfield but not being familiar with Muirfield I will have to get myself over there.Others who qualified were Scottish trio Grant Forrest, Gareth Wright and George Murray, India's Shiv Kapur, Sweden's Oscar Floren and five Englishmen: Jimmy Mullen, Steven Tiley, Tyrrell Hatton, Ben Stow and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Kiwis unhappy with America's Cup rules changes Posted: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Emirates Team New Zealand is protesting a change of rules for the America's Cup, just days away from Sunday's opening of the challenger trials.Following the death of leading British sailor Andrew Simpson in May, when rival challenger Artemis Racing capsized, there were a slew of safety recommendations brought in, including one regarding the size and location of rudder elevators, the winglets on the base of the rudder blades.Kiwi boss Grant Dalton doesn't like the rules being changed so close to Sunday's opening race against Italy's Luna Rossa, and suggests the changes could help defending champion Oracle Team USA.Dalton went so far as to say that the America's Cup could become less popular in sailing-mad New Zealand, which held sailing's biggest prize from 1995-2003, if these shenanigans keep on going.Regatta director Iain Murray said the aim of the rudder change was to minimize the chance of a pitch-pole, which is when the bows submerge and the stern rises out of the water.Emirates Team New Zealand doesn't think Murray can unilaterally change the rule without the unanimous consent of the competitors. Plus, it says it could lead to gruesome injuries because the rule now allows for the elevators to extend beyond the beam, or the width, of the boats. In short, the New Zealanders say they built their boat under a set a rules that now has been changed, cutting into their competitive advantage. When the catamarans hit a certain speed, they lift out of the water and ride only on the two rudder elevators and a daggerboard protruding from the bottom of the leeward hull. Known as foiling, it reduces the drag on the boat and increases the speed dramatically and the New Zealand crew has mastered the technique. We've sailed for just under a year now with absolutely no problems and we've got all our engineering correct, Dalton said Tuesday. We're actually the experts. There is no independent expert. How could there be? We're the only ones who've actually been doing it properly for so long. And we don't think it's necessary or safe at all, Dalton said of the rules change.Dalton said the Kiwis don't have rudder elevators that match the new rules, and even if we had them, we wouldn't dare go out with an untested system and suddenly go racing. Why would you do that? It doesn't make sense.Any small adjustment has a waterfall effect somewhere else around the boat, Dalton said.Changing the elevators at this stage, where we can't see any reason at all, will have an effect on something else, and it might just be simply when the guy eventually falls over the side and slides down there ... the elevator cuts him in half.An America's Cup spokesman said boats will be street legal whether they use the new rudder configuration or the old one. New Zealand's protest will be heard on Monday by an international jury.Asked if the rule change was designed to help Oracle, Dalton said: I don't think it has, no. I don't think that for a second. Is it helping them as a kind of a byproduct? Yes it is.Oracle Team USA, owned by software billionaire Larry Ellison, recently began two-boat testing. It doesn't have to race until the opener of the 34th America's Cup match on Sept. 7 against the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup for challengers.Dalton said the New Zealand boat complies with Murray's other 36 safety recommendations, yet we see the elevator as performance-enhancing for another team and completely unnecessary from a safety point of view.New Zealand tactician Ray Davies said the foils are incredibly important. There's not much else in the water. Hull shapes are kind of irrelevant. Going downwind it's all about your elevators and your daggerfoil, and you have two elevators in the water, and they're absolutely critical.Dalton thinks the catamarans are too big and too expensive and does not see them being used beyond this regatta. They've got a bad stigma about them now, frankly, and so even in another venue they're just too expensive and I just can't see that, he said.Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena agreed with Dalton, saying the change to the rudder elevators is nothing related to safety.

Bolivian leader's plane rerouted on Snowden fear Posted: LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) - The plane carrying Bolivian President Evo Morales home from Russia was rerouted to Austria on Tuesday after France and Portugal refused to let it cross their airspace because of suspicions that NSA leaker Edward Snowden was on board, the country's foreign minister said.Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca denied that Snowden was on the plane, which landed in Vienna, and said France and Portugal would have to explain why they canceled authorization for the plane. We don't know who invented this lie. We want to denounce to the international community this injustice with the plane of President Evo Morales, Choquehuanca said from La Paz. Morales had earlier met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit of major gas exporters in the Kremlin. In an interview with Russia Today television, Morales said that his South American country would be willing to consider granting asylum to Snowden.Leaks by Snowden, a former NSA systems analyst, have revealed the NSA's sweeping data collection of U.S. phone records and some Internet traffic, though U.S. intelligence officials have said the programs are aimed at targeting foreigners and terrorist suspects mostly overseas. He is believed to be in a Moscow airport transit area, seeking asylum from one of more than a dozen countries. This is a hostile act by the United States State Department which has used various European governments, said Bolivian Defense Minister Ruben Saavedra, who was on the flight.Choquehuanca said in a statement that after France and Portugal canceled authorization for the flight, Spain's government allowed the plane to be refueled in its territory. From there the plane flew on to Vienna. He said the decision by France and Portugal put at risk the life of the president.Morales was in the Vienna airport early Wednesday meeting with the plane's crew to reprogram his return to Bolivia, the defense minister Saavedra said.A diplomat with Bolivia's Embassy in Vienna told The Associated Press that the Bolivian president was in the airport's VIP lounge. She said she did not know whether Snowden was with Morales.Snowden has applied for asylum in Venezuela, Bolivia and 18 other countries, according to WikiLeaks, a secret spilling website that has been advising him. Many European countries on the list, including Austria, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland, said he would have to make his request on their soil.WikiLeaks said requests have also been made to Brazil, China, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Iceland, India, Italy and Nicaragua. One of Snowden's best chances of finding refuge outside the United States may hinge on the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, who was also in Russia on Tuesday.Maduro told Russian reporters that his country has not received an application for asylum from Snowden and dodged the question of whether he would take him with him when he left. But Maduro also defended the former National Security Agency systems analyst.Who must protect Snowden? This is the question. This young man of 29 was brave enough to say that we need to protect the world from the American imperial elite, so who should protect him? Maduro said in response to a question from journalists covering a ceremony to rename a Moscow street after Chavez. All of mankind, people all over the world must protect him.Maduro was scheduled to spend Wednesday in neighboring Belarus before returning to Venezuela. In Venezuela, Foreign Minister Elias Jaua condemned the decision by France and Portugal. He that changing a flight's route without checking on how much fuel it had put the president's life at risk. All the countries that have denied permission for the flight of our brother president, Evo Morales, must be held responsible for his life and his dignity as president.Officials at Portugal's Foreign Ministry and National Civil Aviation Authority could not be reached to comment.French government officials reached overnight said they could not confirm whether Morales' plane was denied permission to fly over France. Another possible landing spot for Snowden is Ecuador, where Wikileaks founder and publisher Julian Assange has been seeking asylum. We are disposed to analyze Mr. Snowden's request for asylum and this position has not changed, said Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino on Tuesday. What we have said is that we will be able to analyze the request when Mr. Snowden is in Ecuadorean territory or in an Ecuadorean mission.Patino said Ecuador was not working to help Snowden reach its territory.Snowden, who recently turned 30, withdrew a bid for asylum in Russia when he learned the terms Moscow had set out, according to Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Putin said on Monday that Russia was ready to shelter Snowden as long as he stopped leaking U.S. secrets. At the same time, Putin said he had no plans to turn over Snowden to the United States.Rebuffed by Russia's president, the Obama administration has recently toned down demands Snowden be expelled from the Moscow airport in a sign that the U.S. believes he is not worth scuttling diplomatic relations between the former Cold War enemies.

US drone attack kills 7 in North Waziristan Posted: PESHAWAR (AFP) - A US drone strike early Wednesday killed seven militants in the northwestern tribal area of Pakistan, local officials said.Four unmanned aircrafts fired as many missiles on a compound in the main market area of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan. It was the second US drone attack inside Pakistan since Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as prime minister in June, calling for an end to such strikes and complaining that they violated the country's sovereignty. The previous attack, in which seven militants were killed, came on June 7 just two days after Sharif, of the centre-right Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) party, was sworn in.Drones were seen flying over Miranshah's main bazar for hours before launching a strike at the militants' compound in the early hours of Wednesday.Four drone aircrafts were flying over the area at the time of the attack, while two of them fired four missiles on a compound, killing four militants and wounding two others, a local security official told AFP.Another official in Peshawar confirmed the attack. The attack came when the militants were sleeping in the targeted compound. The death toll from the attack may rise, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media. An AFP reporter saw the drones flying over the area even after the attack. Drone missile strikes are very unpopular in Pakistan, but Washington views them as a vital tool in the fight against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants.Ties with Washington will be a key part of Sharif's tenure, particularly as NATO withdraws the bulk of its forces from Afghanistan by the end of next year after more than 12 years of war.
Posted: BAGHDAD (AFP) - A wave of attacks in Iraq targeting Shiites, including a spate of bombings at markets, killed 40 people on Tuesday raising fears of a revival of the countrys brutal sectarian conflict.Nationwide unrest is at its worst level since 2008, with the UN saying more than 2,500 people have died from April through June, as Iraq grapples with a protracted political deadlock and months of protests by the Sunni Arab minority. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, but most of the violence struck Shiite targets.Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda frequently target Shiite Muslims, whom they regard as apostates.Tuesdays deadliest violence struck the capital, with several car bombs ripping through markets, mostly in Shiite areas of Baghdad, where 32 people were killed, according to security and medical officials.Vehicles rigged with explosives went off minutes apart at around 6:00 pm (1500 GMT) in packed commercial areas of Shuala, Kamiliyah, Shaab, Hurriyah and Abu Tcheer neighbourhoods.I was watching TV and then I heard a very loud explosion, said Ahmed Ibrahim, a day labourer whose apartment balcony was completely destroyed by the nearby car bomb in Kamiliyah, where pools of blood had formed on the ground. Most people fled the scene, they were afraid of a second car bomb, he said, referring to a common militant tactic to target onlookers in an effort to maximise casualties.God will take revenge on those who attacked us, the 31-year-old said. Those who did this are terrorists, they are not Muslims, they are unbelievers.Car bombs also went off in the predominantly Shiite southern cities of Basra, Amara and Samawa, leaving a total of three people dead and nearly 50 more wounded.Shootings elsewhere in the capital killed four more people, while bombings in the restive northern cities of Kirkuk and Mosul left one person dead and three wounded. The violence comes a day after a series of attacks north of Baghdad left 45 people dead, including 23 killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the middle of a funeral taking place inside a Shiite religious hall. The United Nations has said that more than 2,500 people were killed in a surge of violence from April through June.Figures compiled by AFP, meanwhile, showed the death toll from April through June was more than twice that of the first three months of the year.Attacks in recent months have targeted a wide cross-section of Iraqi society -- government targets and security forces were hit by car bombs, mosques were struck by suicide attackers, anti-Qaeda militiamen were shot dead, and Iraqis watching and playing football were killed by blasts. The surge in violence comes amid a protracted political standoff within Iraqs national unity government, with little in the way of landmark legislation passed since a 2010 parliamentary election. And while political leaders have pledged to resolve the dispute, with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki meeting his two main rivals last month, no tangible measures have been agreed.Meanwhile, tensions have persisted in a swathe of territory in northern Iraq that Kurdish leaders want to incorporate into their autonomous three-province region over Baghdads objections. And months of protests among the Sunni Arab community have continued unabated.Analysts and diplomats worry that the multi-faceted standoffs are unlikely to see any long-term resolution at least until a general election due next year.
