Officials: Insurgents kill 17 people across Iraq Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - Suicide attacks, bombings and shootings erupted across Iraq Wednesday, killing at least 17, officials said, the latest in a surge of attacks that has raised concerns about all-out sectarian fighting. The deadliest attack was in Baghdads southeastern suburb of Nahrawan, where a roadside bomb went off in a busy street, killing at least seven civilians and wounding 15, a police officer said.In the southeastern Zafaraniyah neighborhood, the bodies of three workers were found inside a house under construction, another police officer said. All were shot in the head at close range. In the northern city of Mosul, two suicide attackers rammed their explosives-laden cars into two military barricades, killing four soldiers and one civilian, another police officer said. Another 23 people were wounded. Mosul is 360 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Baghdad. Also Wednesday, two anti-al-Qaida Sunni fighters were killed and six wounded when a roadside bomb hit their car in the western Baghdad suburb of Abu Ghraib, police said. The pro-government group called Awakening Council joined with U.S. troops to fight al-Qaida before the U.S. pullout in late 2011. Since then, its members have been a frequent target for al-Qaida in Iraq, which considers them traitors.Four medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to reporters.Violence increased sharply in April and May, with frequent bombings in civilian areas raising concerns that a widespread sectarian conflict might once again break out in Iraq. According to the United Nations mission to Iraq, last months violence claimed the lives of 761 Iraqis and wounded 1,771 others.
Saudi king congratulates Egypt's interim president Posted: DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi King Abdullah sent a message of congratulations to the head of the Egyptian Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour, on Wednesday for being appointed interim head of state after the armed forces overthrew President Mohamed Morsi, the Saudi state news agency SPA reported. In the name of the people of Saudi Arabia and on my behalf, we congratulate your leadership of Egypt in this critical period of its history. We pray for God to help you bear the responsibility laid upon you to achieve the ambitions of our brotherly people of Egypt, the message said.
Assad praises Egypt revolt against president Posted: BEIRUT (AP) - Syrias embattled president on Wednesday praised Egypts protests against their leader and said his overthrow by the military means the end of political Islam.President Bashar Assad, who is seeking to crush a revolt against his own rule, said Egyptians have discovered the lies of the Muslim Brotherhood. He spoke in an interview with the state-run Al-Thawra newspaper to be printed in full Thursday. Excerpts were published Wednesday night on the Syrian presidencys Facebook page, coinciding with the Egyptian militarys announcement of Morsis ouster. What is happening in Egypt is the fall of so-called political Islam, Assad said. This is the fate of anyone in the world who tries to use religion for political or factional interests.Assad is facing an insurgency at home and has refused to step down, calling the revolt an international conspiracy carried out by Islamic extremists and fundamentalist groups such as the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, a branch of the Egyptian group with the same name to which Morsi belongs.Earlier Wednesday, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi urged Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to step down in line with his peoples wishes.Al-Zoubi told reporters in Damascus that Morsis Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization and a U.S. tool.Last month Morsi enraged Syrian officials by announcing he was severing ties with Damascus and closing its embassy in the Syrian capital.Assads father, the late President Hafez Assad, cracked down on a Muslim Brotherhood-led rebellion in the northern city of Hama in 1982. The Syrian forces, led by the presidents brother and special forces from their minority Alawite sect, razed much of the city in a three-week air and ground attack, killing between 10,000 and 20,000 people. The ruling experience of the Muslim Brotherhood failed before it even started because it goes against the nature of people, Assad said in the interview, charging that the Brotherhood aimed to spread strife in the Arab world.
Egypt military pledges no long-term takeover Posted: WASHINGTON (AP) - Two U.S. officials say that Egyptian defense leaders, who ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday, have assured the U.S. that they are not interested in a long-term rule. The official says the leaders, in calls with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pledged to put a civilian government in place quickly.U.S. officials also say the Egyptian military has said it will take steps to ensure the safety of Americans in Egypt, including the diplomatic mission. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record about the matter. The comments came as the Egyptian military suspended the Islamist-backed constitution and called for early elections.
Egypt army ousts Morsi, who decries 'coup' Posted: CAIRO (AP) - The armed forces ousted Egypts first democratically elected president Wednesday after just a year in power, installing a temporary civilian government, suspending the constitution and calling for new elections. Islamist President Mohammed Morsi denounced it as a full coup by the military. After the televised announcement by the army chief, millions of anti-Morsi protesters in cities around the country erupted in delirious scenes of joy, with shouts of God is great and Long live Egypt.Fireworks burst over crowds dancing and waving flags in Cairos Tahrir Square, epicenter of the 2011 uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Now it was one of multiple centers of a stunning four-day anti-Morsi revolt that brought out the biggest anti-government rallies Egypt has seen, topping even those of 2011.But the move potentially throws the country into further confrontation.Moments after the army statement, a statement on the Egyptian presidents offices Twitter account quoted Morsi as saying the militarys measures represent a full coup categorically rejected by all the free men of our nation.Morsi has insisted his legitimacy as an elected president must not be violated or Egypt could be thrown in to violence. Some of his Islamist backers, tens of thousands of whom took to the streets in recent days, have vowed to fight to the end.Down with the rule of the military, some of them chanted after the army announcement, reviving a chant used by leftist revolutionaries during the nearly 17 months of direct military rule that followed Mubaraks removal. The army has insisted it is not carrying out a coup, but acting on the will of the people to clear the way for a new leadership. In his speech, army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said the chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court would step in as interim president until new elections are held. He would be sworn in judges of his court, el-Sissi said. A government of technocrats would be formed with full powers to run the country.El-Sissi spoke while flanked by the countrys top Muslim and Christian clerics as well as pro-reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei and two representatives of the youth opposition movement behind the wave of protests. He promised not to exclude anyone or any movement from further steps. But he did not define the length of the transition period or when presidential elections would be held. He also did not mention any role for the military. The constitution, drafted by Morsis Islamist allies, was temporarily suspended, and a panel of experts and representatives of all political movements will consider amendments. He did not say whether a referendum would be held to ratify the changes, as customary.Seeking to avert a destabilizing backlash, he warned that the armed forces, police will deal decisively with violence. After the 9:20 p.m., the Brotherhoods TV station went blankShortly before the 9: 20 p.m. announcement, the army deployed troops, commandos and armored vehicles in cities around the country. In Cairo, they stationed on bridges over the Nile River and at major intersections. They also surrounded rallies being held by Morsis supporters an apparent move to contain them.Travel bans were imposed on Morsi and top figures from his Muslim Brotherhood including its chief Mohammed Badie and his powerful deputy Khairat el-Shater.At least 39 people have been killed in clashes since Sunday, when the mass protests against Morsi began hiking fears that greater violence could erupt when the final move was made against him. Street battles in the Nile Delta city of Kafr el-Sheikh on Wednesday left at least 200 people injured. The armys move is the second time in Egypts 2 ½ years of turmoil that it has forced out the countrys leader. It pushed out Mubarak and took power itself. This time, however, its removal of an elected figure could be more explosive.Elected with 51.7 percent of the vote in last years presidential election, Morsi took office vowing to move beyond his roots in the Muslim Brotherhood. But his presidency threw the country into deep polarization. Those who took to the streets this week say he lost his electoral legitimacy because he tried to give the Brotherhood and Islamist allies a monopoly on power, pushed through a constitution largely written by his allies and mismanaged the countrys multiple crises. Now we want a president who would really be the president of all Egyptians and will work for the country, Said Shahin, a 19-year-old protester in Tahrir, said, falling to the ground to pray as soon as el-Sissi spoke.Mahmoud Badr, spokesman for Tamarod, or Rebel the youth movement behind the rallies praised the crowds in the streets saying, they succeded in putting your revolution back on track.Lets start a new page, a new page based on participation, he wrote on his Twitter account. Our hand is extended to all.Morsi and his allies say the opposition never accepted their appeals for dialogue seen by opponents as empty gestures and that Mubarak loyalists throughout the government sabotaged their attempts to bring change. The military had issued an ultimatum on Monday giving Morsi 48 hours to find some solution with its opponents. Any deal, however, was a near impossibility, making it inevitable the military would move.Earlier in the day, el-Sissi met with ElBaradei, Egypts top Muslim cleric Al-Azhar Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb and Coptic Pope Tawadros II, as well as youth representatives and some members of the ultraconservative Salafi movements. The consultations apparently aimed to bring as wide a consensus as possible behind the armys moves. But the Brotherhood boycotted the session, its political arm the Freedom and Justice Party said.In a last-minute statement before the deadline, Morsi again rejected the militarys intervention, saying abiding by his electoral legitimacy was the only way to prevent violence. He criticized the military for taking only one side. One mistake that cannot be accepted, and I say this as president of all Egyptians, is to take sides, he said in the statement issued by his office.Justice dictates that the voice of the masses from all squares should be heard, he said, repeating his offer to hold dialogue with his opponents. For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, lets call what is happening by its real name: Military coup, Morsis top foreign policy adviser Essam al-Haddad wrote on his Facebook page.
Murray rallies to make Wimbledon semifinal Posted: LONDON (AP) - Andy Murray had all of Britain on edge for five sets. Juan Martin del Potro only took five points to get the fans buzzing at Wimbledon. Two victories in two very different matches Wednesday sent Murray and del Potro onto the semifinals at the All England Club.Murray completed his seventh career comeback from two sets down to top Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.Made some bad mistakes, poor choices on the court, Murray said. And then, I turned it around really well after that.Earlier on Centre Court, del Potro hyperextended his left knee and crumpled to the ground on the fifth point, but shook off the injury for a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over No. 4 David Ferrer. To be honest, I didnt want to retire (being) in the quarters for first time at Wimbledon, del Potro said. And thats the reason for continuing play. The doctors gave me good anti-inflammatories.Del Potros next match is Friday against No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who beat No. 7 Tomas Berdych 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-3 on Court 1.Murray will play No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz, a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Lukasz Kubot in the first Grand Slam meeting between two Polish men.Going against the 54th-ranked Verdasco, Murray certainly made things interesting for the British fans, looking for one of their own to call a Wimbledon champion for the first time in 77 years. He dropped the first two sets, unable to handle Verdascos pinpoint serves.Slowly, he crept back into the match. In the sixth game of the fourth set, Murray saved a pair of break points first with a service winner, then with one of his 13 aces. Three games later, he broke Verdasco, then served out the set. In the fifth set, the players held serve for 10 straight games. In the 11th,Murray broke, then served out the match at love.I played at a very high level, said Verdasco, appearing in a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time since the 2010 U.S. Open. And to not be able to win is painful, of course. It was Murrays second comeback from two sets down at Wimbledon, adding to a 2008 victory over Richard Gasquet.Yeah, youre obviously concerned, Murray said. Youre more concerned about losing the match, not thinking so much that, Im going to lose at Wimbledon. Youre concerned how the match is going and that you may lose. But when youve been in that position a lot of times, you know how to think through it and not get too far ahead of yourself. In the earlier match, it looked as if del Potro would be done before things really got rolling. His left knee mummified in athletic tape, the tall Argentine chased an overhead into the corner, but his left foot slipped out from under him. His already aching knee straightened suddenly, then bent backward. Del Potro crumpled to the ground and rolled twice into the far edge of the court.I dont try (for) a spectacular fall, but that was really painful for me, del Potro said. After a break of about 10 minutes, del Potro was back on the court. He broke Ferrer twice in the first set, then moved easily through the second and third against one of the grittiest players in tennis.I have my knee problem, but always the opponent, the other players, can have different injuries, too, del Potro said. You have to be strong, more than the rest.Across the way, on Court 1, Janowicz beat Kubot to become the first Polish man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. After the match, the Davis Cup teammates hugged at the net for more than 15 seconds, then exchanged shirts the way football players often do at their games. A bit later, Janowicz sat in his chair, clasped his hands over his nose and cried.Right now, Im the most happy person in the world, Janowicz said.About playing Murray, who won his first Grand Slam tournament last year at the U.S. Open, Janowicz said: I hope Andy will feel some kind of pressure. Im sure hell feel some kind of pressure because Great Britain is waiting for the English champion in Wimbledon.During a tournament with more than its share of twists and turns to say nothing of slips and slides Djokovic and del Potro have gone through virtually unscathed, on the scoreboard at least. Neither man has dropped a set.Djokovic overcame a two-break, 3-0 deficit in the second set to cruise to his latest victory over Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up. Djokovic is in his 13th straight Grand Slam semifinal and in search of his seventh major title.Coming into the semifinals, I feel physically fresh, Djokovic said.Del Potro wouldnt quite use those terms to describe himself. He is, however, starting to show the form he used to win his only major championship, the U.S. Open in 2009, which also marks the last time he reached a Grand Slam semifinal. He is 3-8 lifetime against Djokovic, though one of those victories came at the All England Club when he beat the Serb in the Olympic bronze-medal match last year. Del Potro also won their last meeting, earlier this year on hard court in Indian Wells, California. He struggled with injuries in last few years, but every time he comes back, he comes back very strong because he just has this talent, Djokovic said.Indeed, del Potro nicknamed The Tower of Tandil after his hometown in Argentina has won despite being wracked with pain since Saturday, when he slipped and hyperextended his left knee for the first time.Hes not the only one to slip at Wimbledon during this fortnight, and he wasnt the only one hurting Wednesday.Ferrer has also been dealing with ankle and toe issues. He cut short his pre-match hitting session because of pain in his ankle but said that was no excuse. Ferrer, who crossed the net to run toward del Potro to check on him when he fell, said he didnt see much change in his opponents play after the injury.Juan Martin, he was more focused, he was playing more aggressive than me and he served very, very good in all three sets, Ferrer said.
Ghana rallies to beat Portugal 3-2 at U20 WCup Posted: ISTANBUL (AP) - Substitute Yiadom Boakye set up the equalizer and then scored a late winner as Ghana came from behind to beat Portugal 3-2 and reach the quarterfinals of the Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday.Ghana was 2-1 down when Boakye came on the 75th. Four minutes later, Portugal goalkeeper Jose Sa saved his shot but allowed Michael Anaba to pounce on the rebound for the equalizer. Boakye then followed up by sending a free kick through the two-man wall in the 85th.Kennedy Ashia had put Ghana ahead with a 25-meter (yard) effort in the 19th minute. However, defenders Tiago Ferreira and Edgar both scored within the space of three minutes to put Portugal 2-1 up in the 73rd.Ghana, the only African nation in the quarterfinals, next plays Chile, which beat Croatia 2-0 with two late goals.Ghana was the last team to qualify for the knockout stage, after losing two group matches and narrowly advancing on goal difference following a 4-1 defeat of the United States.Portugal, the 2011 runner-up, had scored the most goals in the group stage but failed to convert two early chances. Aladje was left unmarked but sent his effort over the crossbar after 15 seconds while Bruma, who scored five times in three group matches, shot wide a minute later.Portugal dominated possession but ultimately paid the price for failing to make it count.Chile similarly controlled large parts of its match against Croatia, which has never gone beyond the round of 16, but created few chances.Nicolas Castillo finally broke the deadlock when he was set up by Sebastian Martinez and headed the ball backward over Croatia goalkeeper Oliver Zelenika in the 81st. Four minutes later, Croatia defender Jozo Simunovic sent a Christian Bravo cross past his own goalkeeper.Chile finished third in 2007 but failed to qualify for the next two editions.Later Wednesday, Iraq was playing Paraguay and Colombia was taking on South Korea for the two remaining spots in the last eight. The other two quarterfinals are France vs. Uzbekistan and Uruguay vs. Spain.
FIFA again bans Irqa from hosting friendlies Posted: BAGHDAD (AFP) - FIFA on Wednesday barred Iraq from hosting international football friendlies due to a massive surge in nationwide violence, barely three months after world footballs governing body gave Baghdad the go-ahead.The Iraqi Football Association (IFA) was informed of the ban in a notification from FIFA, which cited a spike in unrest that has left more than 2,500 dead from April through June and at least 123 killed in the first three days of July alone.Today, we received a notification from FIFA to stop hosting any friendly matches in stadiums in Iraq at the current time, and until further notice, due to the wave of violence, said Naim Saddam, an IFA official. This is regrettable.FIFA in March lifted a ban on Iraq hosting international football friendlies and the country promptly staged a match with neighbouring Syria in Baghdads Shaab stadium just days later, with the national side subsequently facing off with Liberia. The initial friendly had marked a key step in Iraqs re-emergence on the world stage after decades of conflict and sanctions. But the country has been hit by a marked increase in violence since, with recent attacks also targeting football pitches and cafes where Iraqis were watching the sport on television. In June alone, more than 60 people were killed in at least 10 bombings targeting pitches and cafes, according to an AFP tally.
Cycling: Cavendish wins 5th stage of Tour de France Posted: MARSEILLE (AFP) - Britains Mark Cavendish won a crash-marred fifth stage of the Tour de France in Marseille on Wednesday as Australian Simon Gerrans retained the race leaders yellow jersey.Cavendish, of the Omega-Pharma team, finished over a bike length ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) and Slovakian Peter Sagan (Cannondale) in a reduced bunch sprint after they had avoided a crash inside the final kilometre. It was the Isle of Man riders 24th stage win on the race and left him only 10 short of equalling the absolute record of 34 held by Belgian legend Eddy Merckx.A month after winning five stages at the Giro dItalia, Cavendish looks to be in unstoppable form but he was quick to pay tribute to his main lead-out man, Gert Steegmans.Gert took me in at such a speed and I just kept that speed going. I only had to accelerate in the final 150 metres. Im super happy with that, added Cavendish, who in recent days has been recovering from a chest infection.Im still not 100 percent after being ill last week. But its good to get the account open here at the Tour de France. The morale is good in the team and the only way to make it better is by winning more stages. On what was the second-longest stage (228.5 kilometre ) of the 100th edition the peloton gave the green light to an early six-man breakaway which formed in the opening kilometres after Belgian Thomas De Gendt had gone on the attack.By the 37km mark they had built a maximum lead of nearly 13 minutes on the main peloton, which only really decided to start the chase with a little over 100km remaining. With Gerrans in the race leaders yellow jersey, Orica-GreenEdge spent long spells leading the bunch but with a stage win on a flat home straight up for grabs the other teams with top sprinters soon began sending riders to the front to boost the chase.Sixty kilometres from the finish the lead had halved to just over six minutes and 10km further on the lead group was split in two as De Gendt, Yukiya Arashiro and Alexey Lutsenko - a former under-23 world champion who is making his race debut with Astana - left their companions behind. Not wanting to miss out on contending a possible stage win, Arashiros Europcar teammate Kevin Reza, also a race debutant, dug deep to bridge the gap.The quartets lead over the main bunch, however, had been trimmed to 5:05 with 40km to race as riders from Argos, Lotto, and Omega-Pharma joined Orica in the hunt.Attempts to pull clear at the front by Reza and then Arashiro came to nothing and despite a tough headwind on the Gineste climb the escapees appeared to have little chance of keeping the pack at bay.It was on the Gineste, whose summit was 12 km from the finish, that a crash in the chasing bunch took down around a dozen riders. The incident left no visible casualties but delayed several including German Marcel Kittel, the winner of stage one, and Oricas main sprinter Matt Goss.Today we had two objectives, Gerrans said. To try and win the stage and keep the yellow jersey within the team.Matt Goss got distanced on the final climb but I still have the yellow jersey on my shoulders and I managed to stay up the front and stay out of trouble. The main peloton crested the summit only 19secs in arrears and despite Lutsenko taking Reza with him with an ambitious attack the pair were reeled in in succession with 4km to go.The Lotto team of German sprinter Andre Greipel took command of the race inside the final kilometre after a crash further behind had stopped much of the peloton in its tracks.Greipel, however, could only finish fifth as Cavendish made his move inside the final 250 metres to claim his first win of this years race.
Scientists create 'human liver' from stem cells Posted: PARIS (AFP) - Scientists in Japan said Wednesday they had grown human liver tissue from stem cells in a first that holds promise for alleviating the critical shortage of donor organs.Creating lab-grown tissue to replenish organs damaged by accident or disease is a Holy Grail for the pioneering field of research into the premature cells known as stem cells. Now Takanori Takebe of the Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine and a team report in the journal Nature that they grew tissue resembling the (human) adult liver in a lab mouse. They first created induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells which they mixed with other cell types and coaxed into liver buds -- the precursor clusters that develop into a liver. The buds, each about five millimetres (0.2 inches) big, were then transplanted onto a mouse brain, where they were observed transforming into a functional human liver complete with blood vessels, the scientists wrote. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the generation of a functional human organ from pluripotent stem cells, said the report. The technique has yet to be tested in humans, but serves as an important proof of concept, it added.Stem cells are infant cells that can develop into any part of the body.Until a few years ago, when iPS cells were created, the only way to obtain stem cells was to harvest them from human embryos. This is controversial because it requires the destruction of the embryo, a process to which religious conservatives and others object.iPS cells are easily-obtainable mature cells that are reprogrammed into a versatile, primitive state from where they can develop into any kind of cell in the body.Takebe told a press conference ahead of the reports release that the man-made liver was observed through a replacement glass skull that was fitted around the mouses brain. The liver developed blood vessels which fused with those of the animal. It also performed certain human-specific liver functions -- producing proteins and processing specific drugs. We have concluded that this liver is functioning, the scientist said. We think this is enough for improving the survival after liver failure.Scientists commenting on the research described it as promising. This science opens up the distinct possibility of being able to create mini-livers from the skin cells of a patient dying of liver failure, said Malcolm Alison, professor of stem cell biology at the Queen Mary University of London.Human mature liver cells transplanted on their own can fail to thrive, but if immature liver cells are first combined with their normally nurturing supportive cells, they can mature in the transplanted host and function efficiently, he said in a statement issued by the Science Media Centre.Dusko Ilic from Kings College London said the promise of an off-shelf-liver seems much closer than one could hope even a year ago, but the strategy has yet to be proven in humans.Whilst the title of the paper is functional human liver, these liver buds do not contain the biliary structures (which drain toxins out of the liver) or immune cells that characterise real human liver, added Stuart Forbes, professor of transplantation and regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh.Chris Mason of University College London said the buds may be useful for drug testing in the lab, which is currently restricted by the limited availability of liver cells from human cadavers.Takebe said the method may also work in organs like the pancreas, kidneys or lungs, but it would be another 10 years before trials are done in humans. One key requirement would be to shrink the buds to a much smaller size so they can be injected into the bloodstream and taken up by the body internally, he said.
Saudi Arabia: 2 more deaths from new virus Posted: RIYADH (AP) - Saudi Arabia says two more people have died from a new respiratory virus related to SARS, bringing the total number of deaths to at least 34 in the kingdom at the center of the growing outbreak.Overall, more than 40 people have died from the virus since September, most of them in Europe and the Middle East. Thats according to local officials and the World Health Organization. The Saudi Health Ministry also said Wednesday that three patients with the virus have recovered, in a further sign that treatments are working. The new virus is related to SARS, which killed some 800 people in a global outbreak in 2003. It belongs to a family of viruses that most often causes the common cold.
Inventor of computer mouse dies at age of 88 Posted: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Doug Engelbart, the inventor of the computer mouse and developer of early incarnations of email, word processing programs and the Internet, has died at the age of 88.The Computer History Museum, where Engelbart had been a fellow since 2005, says he died early Wednesday. The museum in Mountain View, California, was notified of the death in an email from his daughter, Christina. The cause of death wasnt immediately known.Engelbarts biggest breakthrough was the computer mouse, which he developed in the 1960s and patented in 1970. At the time, it was a wooden shell covering two metal wheels. The notion of operating the inside of a computer with a tool on the outside was ahead of its time. The mouse wasnt commercially available until 1984, with Apples new Macintosh.
Oil above $101 on US supply drop, Egypt Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil rose to its highest level in 14 months on concerns about Middle East supplies and signs of an increase in U.S. demand for fuel.In afternoon trading Wednesday, U.S. benchmark oil was up $1.48 to $101.08. It rose to $102.18 a barrel earlier, a high since May of last year. Oil has not closed above $100 since May 3, 2012.Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refineries to make gasoline, rose $1.71 to $105.71 in London. The Energy Department reported Wednesday that U.S. crude supplies fell by 10.3 million barrels from the previous week, more than three times the drop that analysts had expected. The drop was likely the result of reduced supplies from Canada because of a temporary pipeline shutdown there, as well as increased demand from a BP refinery that restarted in Indiana. But the drop could also be an indication that U.S. demand is rising. At the same time, traders were worried that political upheaval in Egypt could slow the flow of oil from the Middle East to world markets. Embattled Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi vowed not to resign ahead of a deadline to yield to the demands of millions of protesters. The Egyptian military has threatened to suspend the constitution, disband parliament and install a new leadership.Army troops backed by armor and including commandos have deployed across much of the Egyptian capital, surrounding protests by the presidents supporters.Egypt is not an oil producer but its control of the Suez Canal, one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes, gives it a crucial role in maintaining global energy supplies. The Middle East accounts for about a quarter of the worlds crude oil output, or 23 million barrels per day. About 2 million barrels of that, or 2.2 percent of world demand, are transported daily through the Suez Canal, which links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. Much of that oil is headed to Europe, but a supply drop anywhere in the world leads to higher prices everywhere. Some analysts suggested market reaction to the political crisis in Egypt was exaggerated. Each time there is a bit of confusion in Egypt there will be calls that a geopolitical premium needs to be added to oil because of the risk to the Suez Canal, said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland. But if there is one thing that the military has control of in Egypt it is the Suez Canal. We therefore do not see a significant risk for free passage on the waterway. The Suez Canal Authority, which operates the waterway, said it has all the authorities needed for running the Canal without being limited by the laws and the systems of the (Egyptian) government.
Swann spins England to victory in warm-up game Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Graeme Swann gave Australia a timely reminder of his ability by taking five wickets as England warmed-up for next weeks first Ashes Test with a 228-run win over Essex on Wednesday.Essex, set a second innings target of 415 to win at their Chelmsford headquarters east of London, collapsed to 186 all out on the final day of four with off-spinner Swann taking five for 68.Earlier in the match, while batting, Swann -- Englands premier off-spinner and widely viewed as a more potent bowler than Australia counterpart Nathan Lyon -- suffered an injury to his bowling arm, having had an operation on his right elbow earlier in the year. However, X-rays cleared Swann of a fracture and left him all set to take his place in Englands team at his Nottinghamshire home ground of Trent Bridge for the start of their Ashes defence, which begins with the first Test commencing a week on Wednesday.Durhams Graham Onions, looking to break into Englands settled seam attack, pressed his case with three wickets for no runs on the way to a return of four for 43 as Essex lost five for 11 either side of tea.At least England were bowling to something akin to the Essex side that started a match stripped of its first-class status on Tuesdays third day when injuries deprived Essex of two seamers. The fact the duo were replaced by two bowlers who didnt start the match in Essexs Reece Topley and Englands Boyd Rankin, loaned to the hosts by the national side, transformed what had been a first-class match into something akin to a glorified net session.Farcical was the word bandied about in many British press reports and although Englands intention was to give their batsmen more testing practice, they still advanced comfortably enough to 279 for four declared with skipper Alastair Cook (82) and Jonathan Trott (79) both retired out.The aim was clearly to give the likes of Jonny Bairstow, whod played just one county Twenty20 match since starring at his Headingley home ground in Englands second Test win over New Zealand in May, some more time in the middle. But Bairstow, in the squad but a spectator during Englands run last month to a Champions Trophy final they lost to India at Edgbaston, could only manage 28 in under an hour before he was bowled by Rankin following a first innings 23.Essex offered some initial resistance when they batted a second time with a first-wicket stand of 91 between Jaik Mickleburgh (58) and New Zealands Hamish Rutherford (45).Swann was kept waiting until his sixth over for his first wicket of the innings which came when Rutherford missed a slog sweep and was bowled off stump by a turning delivery. The off-spinner then had former England batsman Owais Shah caught for a duck by Trott at slip.Mickleburgh, shortly after completing his second fifty of the match, then holed out to Cook at short midwicket as he too fell to Swann.Onions then got in on the act before Swann ended the match when he had David Masters caught in the deep.
